I would just like to add a couple of tips on how to do this. 1) start with the smallest room or closet in your house and get that closet completely clean and organized then move on to the second smallest and so on until eventually you have the whole house in order. I do recommend leaving the garage for last as that is where most stuff gets thrown when you declutter other rooms. Once decluttered you need to show the family where everything goes. They should have a place for their coats, school work, empty lunch boxes , etc. It will take some time to train everyone but keep at it they will get it. In my experience the kids are easier than the husband : ). The next thing you to make is a cleaning schedule. Certain rooms per day. Mine is Mon - Full Bathrooms / Laundry. Tues - Bedrooms. WEd - Living room and 1/2 Bath. Thurs - Kitchen and Dinning. Fri - Car. The Final part is the day to day maintaining. Make it a habit to ALWAYS make sure everything is in place when you leave a room.

    Halli, hallo,
Thanks for your de-cluttering suggestions. I have reached the point of de-cluttering, when I started watching the TV-program "Hoarders". WOW, my house never looked like the ones that are de-junked, but the program was truly an inspiration.
Spring 2014 a collection of 64 garments left my closet and ended up at the 2nd hand store. It was such a good feeling.
    Keeping up the good work.

Hello Jennifer, my name is Sarah and I am expecting baby n09, I am constantly striving to clear the clutter throw things out and STAY organised. Like you say it is not so easy with children, I do think "having less stuff" makes it so much easier, especially with children, if I did not have a place for everything my home would be extreme chaos, I have been watching you for about 2 months and I have bought your first book, I am waiting till after Christmas to purchase your next one, I read the 1st in about 2 days, I could not put it down and I am really excited to get the next one, I am due this baby, Dec 20th and being pregnant, I have an extremely minimal wardrobe and it is so wonderful, I plan to continue this once the baby has arrived and I am also encouraging my children to do the same, I have been headed in this direction and behaving this way for about 10 years but love finding people like yourself who inspire me further to get rid of everything we don't use, I have no problem doing this. I have also purchased a much nicer tea pot since watching your tea video ha ha, thank you for always being beautiful xx

Love your ideas of clutter busting. I do live by myself and at times, it appears you don't see the clutter. Because I have disability issues, I need help in a different way. One thing I have learned is to set a timer for 8 minutes. It's surprising, how much I can declutter in that amount of time. Thanks

Great video! My husband and I might be down-sizing soon, and instead of being upset, I'm ecstatic! Think of all the de-cluttering I will be forced to do...LOL. The Fly Lady really changed my habits years ago, she's amazing. Thanks for a great video Jennifer :)

Lovely video, Jennifer. My children are now grown and I am a long time de-clutterer. My husband, alas, is a saver. I have found that I regularly go behind him and toss things without him knowing. For example he likes video equipment magazines. When one comes in, I toss the one on the bottom. It's the only way I can stay sane! I have been known to ask him "when did your pair of socks become my new table decoration" but I don't do it very often. Thank you so very much for all your tips. Much love, Melissa

Thanks for the suggestions Jennifer. I don't know of any books but if I am in need of encouragement to de-clutter and clean I like to watch that funky British show called, "How Clean Is Your House?" It is very humorous and lighthearted while also providing good ideas for organization and cleaning.

I found your channel because this year I decided my family is taking a more minimalistic approach. Living lighter and only keeping things we use. I LOVE coming t UA-cam for inspiration and when researching capsule wardrobes, I found you and now I listen to the Lessons from Madame Chic while I declutter. I'd love to see more UA-cam videos about how families manage this lifestyle and plan to shoot my own after I'm done.

Paper clutter seems to be a big hot spot for my family. We also have a dumping ground situation on our dining room table...kids papers, bills, mail, newspaper, it never ends. So I got a basket that sits on a nearby unused chair....this did not work. Basket is now overflowing! lol. Why is paper so hard to get rid of? I swear it reproduces overnight. Today while I relisten to your videos I am cleaning my desk. :)

Decluttering has just become a joyful part of every day. It's amazing what it does for my sense of calm. I gather things up and put the immediately in the box in the back of my car to donate. My donation drop off is in the same parking lot as the market down the hill. Even if it is small amounts it feels good to know that someone will put the items into use and it is completely gone from my home. It is freeing to let go and live in a clutter free home.

I had just gotten rid of 3 bags of clothes before I stumbled upon your channel. I thought 3 bags was really ruthless, but I still have about 200 or so items of clothing and I wish I was exaggerating. Despite the fact I only wear 20 items regularly. Thanks for inspiring me to get rid of it all, I have a big task ahead of me.

hot spot...Two days ago I was finally fed up with the clutter. We were still unpacking after a move but I had reached my limit. I stood at the front door and looked through the eyes of a visitor. I saw two hot spots. One was a dresser that was over flowing with 'things' and another was the dining room table. I went to work.
Hubby was startled when he got home but even more startled as I cleared the 'clutter' that had begun to gather again. He asked why...my reply "it looks nicer this way". I will continue to make it a habit to tidy these two hot spots and any more that I see developing.
I had to laugh when listening about the stagnant spaces. We found so many when packing to move.

Hello. I appreciate your videos. I will say that I have known 2 women like the Madame Chic you describe, and neither of them worked outside the home. While they had impeccable homes and looked elegant, they also had more time to dedicate to maintain this way of life. My grandmother, (what I remember of her growing up), was this way in many ways. However, she had 8 children and I don't know if her home was so orderly in those days. My mom said the girls had chores, but the boys did not. I still think that there is a lot to be learned from women like this so I thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. It seems with all our modern conveniences our lives should be more orderly, but then again many times it takes two incomes to have these so called conveniences. So...not really.

2:25 - 3:00 I felt like you were speaking right to me....in our last home (we just recently moved) it was the entryway table. Just that whole room, in fact. It DROVE.ME.NUTS. Sometimes the thought of even coming home caused a bit of an anxiety attack. I cannot stress how much I hate to see that visual of clutter. I despised that house because of its setup, and am so thankful the place we moved to is so much different and better - with a normal setup. The clutter has disappeared, as its whole setup and layout (in addition to more space) just makes it easier to keep clean and neat. Funny how a layout can affect that; I'd never had a space like that before and it truly did make it a very difficult place to keep tidy.

I love getting rid of clutter. I find it so therapeutic. For me it always seems to be paper (bills, flyers, receipts...) that build up into big piles. Now I sort through my mail as soon as it comes in the door. Junk flyers go in the recycling immediately, and the rest sits on my desk neatly in my "drop box" tray until I sort it once a week. I also have a documents folder where I file important papers and I make sure to keep that tidy as well. I'm also a huge reader so I am careful about how many books accumulate in my home, and regularly sort through them and donate or sell back to the bookshop

Hi Jennifer! I would like to add "dogs that shed/ a puppy" to the list including husband and children who cause clutter/messes. Do you have any tips on managing messes/ cleaning with dogs? Unfortunately, I find that at this point in my life my husband and I live in a tiny home with two dogs, and I can't seem to get away from both clutter and dog hair. If I'm wearing something nice, I try not to even go near the puppy... I suppose strict training to keep them off of the couch, for example, and not jumping are important. Brushing them out daily outside is important as well. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you!

digitalteacup scan all of the papers, artwork, etc. that you can & have it digital only. Obviously you put the yearbook on a shelf where you can look at it on occasion or you might as well get rid of it. Or perhaps take photos of anything you love from the yearbook & then rid of it.

Please don't feel that if you are a mother you cannot keep the same level of cleanliness that you did when you were single because you absolutely can. It's just a matter of training your kids (which I'm still working on that one : ) ) and being willing to pick up not only after yourself but everyone else in the house. No it's not fair, but it's life. So if you want a clutter free squeaky clean home make a schedule and charge at it full force!!!!!

U tell about your Madame Chic n it reminds me of my grandma .. they could not be more different people if u just see their appearance n background but remarkable similarities. I think my grandma was way more efficient than Madame chic . Let me explain. I grew up in a big family of around 20 people n big house n no live in helpers in a mid size city of India . My grandma was not educated n a mother of 4 boys and a daughter. I remember growing up in such a house . My grandma was a minimalist , super organised n efficient n could get work done from anyone .. not. Joking . Never saw any clutter anywhere.. never saw anyone shouting n asking where is this n that . No argument over chores or menu or anything in general . Things run efficiently. N no one was overworked. My mom has responsibilities of kitchen only 10 days a month . Rest she was free . Even on those 10 days .. it was not huge chore . Yearly stocking of grains n main food staples was done n also homemade pickles n other stuff . Food storage was an art . Fresh food was. Cooked in every meal . Fresh homemade butter n ghee every 3rd day basic capsule wardrobe of 10 items . I have to learn a lot from her . N I swear I never saw her working!!

The first book I ever read on de-cluttering was Clutter's Last Stand by Don Aslet. He really helped me see the illogic of holding on to stuff for "maybe someday" and the efficiency of streamlining. It really saves time, money and gives peace of mind to live with order. I need to apply this to my wardrobe. I want to lose weight and find it challenging to invest in clothes that will hopefully be too large the following season. Do you have recommendations for folks like me who are transitioning either in size or lifestyle?

Seems that Marie Kondo is married (maybe not when she wrote the book some years before this video), no idea for how long now, but at this point in time seems to be expecting.
Whatever it is, she really does keep her personal life private and it is ok.

Actually, living by yourself should mean everything is perfect, but I have to tell you, no. No guarantee. I am using the KonMari methods plus others to move toward minimalism.

Thanks for the wonderful video Jennifer. I have battled with clutter all my life. Growing up in a cluttered home and bring that with me in to my own. One book I found really helpful is Winning the Clutter War by Sandra Felton. Also playing the minimalist game look up #minsgame help me get rid of tons of items I no longer needed or loved. I haven't totally won yet but I'm getting much better with plans in place.

    Hi Jennifer,
I'd like to come back to you about the Marie Kondo book you talk about. I did not read the book but i've seen a video (ua-cam.com/video/w1-HMMX_NR8/v-deo.html) where she explains the basics of her methods. One of the question asked to her is about children and she basically says under 3, the parents organise stuff for the children, and from 3, they should start to learn organisation. Also, she says children should start learning organisation with clothes.
Don't know if this is perfect advice here, but as you wondered, i'm relaying the info ;)
You have plenty of nice and inspirational ideas, keep going !

What about other people’s stuff that they love even though they never use it? I can’t declutter other people’s stuff(family), and it’s a lot. It’s hard to live with that.

You helped inspire me to clear my clutter. The Fly Lady did as well. I did a 30-day challenge in Sept. and posted my progress on Facebook. Later I compiled my comments on my blog. It really is an emotional decluttering as well. It feels so freeing to have less stuff taking up space. But, like you said, it is an ongoing process. I still have some clutter hotspots and stagnant spaces to tackle. Thanks for giving it some attention - it helps me to keep the progress going! www.anngrusky.com/my-2014-30-day-decluttering-challenge.html

Kathryn Reilly most you don't need to keep but you should scan to your computer & backup externally anything important. Digital is the way to go with papers. Also the way with books & magazines;kindle or online subscriptions
