As a New Englander with a Ten Item Wardrobe I hope you don't mind my adding a few thoughts about winter wardrobes. First, there are days in January and February where I have to ignore my wardrobe and just dress for safety in the elements and I don't see that as going against the principles in any way. Second, my big investment most years is either a new pair of winter boots or a nice wool coat. I only pull out the Bean Boots and puffer coat on the dangerously cold days or ones with heavy snow. Third, my fall and winter wardrobes are not the same. While I can get away with a single capsule for spring/summer, I want completely different things in 50 degrees vs. 5. Finally, if I see that corduroy or wool trousers and lined skirts are big in stores in a given year I will buy duplicates because for whatever reason it's not always easy to find them every year. Hopefully that's helpful for anyone looking to take the plunge from a colder climate!

I totally agree. When it's -30 wind chill with ice and snow and salt on the ground, you just don't have the option of cute shoes. I still don't wear sweats, but I will wear jeans and a very heavy sweater with layers underneath. Those are the days I choose "cozy chic" as my personal style, put on my makeup and just go with it!

Ten Item Wardrobe: In Vancouver the fall and winter seasons are wet and cold (usually simultaneously!) I use your jeans, boots and blazer (trench coat, winter coat) formula, and change up my look with a few inexpensive scarves from H & M. Thank you for the inspiration and the invitation to live a classy lifestyle! :) Hugs from Canada!

I loved how you encouraged that graduate. You were so kind to her. I enjoyed your whole video, and especially when you showed your bouquet. The periwinkle-colored flower is called Scabiosa.

Hi Jennifer, long time fan of your books/blog from all the way over here in Guam. Your advice and encouragement to Serene has brought me to tears as I am in a similar situation as she. It's wonderful hearing that someone so highly regarded and successful as yourself has gone through the same journey. It is, after all, part of the process of living, but at this age, it often feels as if I am the only one. Grateful to know there is nothing wrong with me. Thank you so much, Jennifer. Blessings to you and your family.

Thank you for sharing, Jennifer! Living in the upper mid-west has taught me that deep winter dressing can be difficult. Because i'm a teacher, I have recess duty on top of our school district dropping indoor temperatures to save money. One thing I have done in the past is to wear longer skirts with long underwear underneath them. I then wear long socks and tall boots so the long underwear can't be seen. However, now there are great legging options that could provide the same warmth. I'm very excited to see your winter wardrobe. Thank you for keeping us poised! Can't wait to see your new book.~Dana

We have just come out of winter here and I live in one of the coldest parts of Australia. It was cold and we had to wear more clothes but as you said layering was the way to go. I found the scarf was the best accessory for me. I was able to put it around my neck, around my shoulders and with it started to drizzle I was able to put it over my head and shoulders to protect myself further.
My favourite outfit was a pair of jeans, black boots, black leather jacket, long sleeved tee shirt, a hat and a scarf. On the colder days I would wear gloves as well. What the world didn't get to see were the socks. My Hubby had a collection of football socks I pinched and I wear them up to the knee under my jeans lol... warm and not seen.

Living in the UK, we sometimes have bitter months of winter. Lots of us wear thin thermal underwear (leggings and long sleeve tops) under our normal clothes. Silk or merino wool if we can afford them (warm, but ultra thin) or synthetic versions can be good too. Check out outdoor/hiking shops for 'base layers', if all else fails... Worth it, if you live in a cold climate, so that you can still wear nice clothes.

I love the sweater and the necklace. Gosh, Jennifer, you gave such terrific advice. I got so much from the winter wardrobe suggestions. I am weird in that I have to wear shoes in my home. I might be going to take a shower and have on just a towel but I have to at least have on something like Havaianas on. So I usually end up wearing black flats in the winter and sandals in the summer. I love the flowers at the end. So beautiful. Thank you so much for answering these questions Jennifer. One video request in the future - do you use a planner? How do you plan your life and what is your daily morning routine like! Much love to you!!! Melissa

I am pregnant and nursing a toddler, so I find snacking is a MUST for me. What I make sure I do to remain chic is make a plate (instead of grab and go) and a cup of tea or glass of water and sit down to eat. It also encourages my active son to slow down and take a break through out the day. If we will be out, I pack a meal or snack Bento-style so that it looks pretty and can be eaten anywhere (even at the park on a picnic blanket).

Hi Jennifer, thank you for another lovely video. I'm a huge fan of yours. When I read about Madame Chic I think of my grandmother, who was an essence of chic and beauty. She remained elegant at all times, She managed to be graceful always. I wish I listened to her style advice when I was teenager! At one time she even offered to pay me to take my piercings out... I grew up in Poland, where winters were bitterly cold and to stay warm we used to layer clothes. You would always put warm woolly tights under your trousers, and if you wanted to wear dress you might have to put two pairs of tights on. Thermal or woolly underwear was a key, on a cold day you would layer a vest, long sleeve top and then a woolly jumper. Warm coat, hat, gloves and scarf were essential. Bad weather shouldn't be an excuse to be sloppy, my grandma was chic despite living in cold climate. Best regards, from rainy UK, where sportswear is as popular as in California... Olga.

You're so sweet and refreshing to watch. I have a few questions!
Would you mind sharing fun things you and your husband do as a couple? Strengthening our marriage is a constant and enjoyable priority for us.
Also, I loved the tips about the winter wardrobe. I had a "duh!" Moment when you mentioned warm thick leggings paired with skirts! So smart! What kind of tops do you pair with skirts? I'm very much a dress person but I'd love to try skirts, too!
Also, would you share with us your favorite maternity looks?
Thank you for being you and sharing your smiles!!

I've enjoyed your books and am looking forward to the next one. I've managed to survive several "polar vortexes" by wearing layers. It's the only way to go. My office is actually hot due to the heat being too high in the winter. Conversely, it is freezing in the summer time. I will never understand why in this day and age, they can't manage to keep an office at a constant, comfortable temperature. That purple flower is a Scabiosa, but I prefer the common name- pincushion flower. They also come in white.

Really enjoyed your video. Advice for getting a job out of college...consider working at a temp or temp to hire agency because you can earn money right away and if you are on a temp job and get an interview at a company you want to work with, you just tell the agency you aren't able to go into work that day and they find a replacement for you. If you are a good worker it doesn't mark against you because the temp agency realizes you are looking for a job.

What a wonderful video with interesting questions and practical answers for everyone to incorporate into their personal lives. I have slippers, and I also really like the idea of ballet flats for home. I do have a pair of pink ballet slippers I used for an exercise class which are neutral and look nice and simple at home. You looked so pretty and I await your upcoming ten-item wardrobe video. We have fresh-cut flowers in our home every week and it's the most beautiful addition to our rooms. Trader Joe's has a variety of lovely flowers, often at very reasonable prices. Having them in the garden is even better! Quick question: Will you be having a Southern California book-signing tour? You mentioned one location in your newsletter and I'm hoping for a few more.

Love your videos and books! I am always encouraged to be a better version of myself after watching your videos. I think the purple flower is called a pincushion.
Is it just me who thinks tights are NOT comfortable? They dig in at the waist, sag at the crotch and droop. It is not chic to have to yank your tights up all the time.

Another lovely video. Its interesting because as a plus-size woman, I find it much EASIER to dress nice in tje cold weather, because warmer fabrics, onget sleeves, and layers are so mich more flattering. The height of summer is hardest for me, bec its so hot I want to be sleeveless but that is nit an attractive look fir me.Thanks for all the tips!

I love this because we have really cold weather and 1 ft of snow right now. So I'm wearing fleece leggings and sweaters. But I am going to try wearing fleece tights and a dress tomorrow with layers and see how that works out. But I love wearing leggings and long Tunic sweaters. But the style I love is not that, it's just what I have on hand right now. This weekend I'm going to some clothing stores, high end of course, to find my winter style and when things on sale this month I will buy some pieces that will work. I think right now to find a wardrobe is a good time to buy high end pieces because the sales are amazing. Especially at ANn Taylor.

As someone who also lives in California, I really miss wearing cold weather clothing. If I lived in a climate like that, I would have two really warm, long coats that were in a cut and color that I loved. When I go to NYC, I always notice all the different beautiful coats. So, make your coats your main pieces and then add all the layers underneath as explained.

I agree on the job thing and never knowing where it leads. A friend of my got her masters in child education at NYU and was a teacher in NY. She wanted to move back here to SoCal but there are different credential requirements so she took a minimum wage job as a preschool teacher.. she gave it her all but she couldn't take it anymore. To make a long story short she moved back to NY to teach again, was unhappy because she no longer wanted to teach and moved back here to SoCal.. her old boss at the preschool became in charge of a hospital outreach program teaching new/low income mothers how to basically "mother"... she got her what she calls her "dream job" and she's so happy. If she hadn't humbled herself to the preschool job she would've never met her boss who'd get her the dream job a couple years later! It's so funny how life can work out.. Even though we can't see it, there is a master plan!

Hi Jennifer! I just bought your book and I'm loving it! I'm making small strides everyday to make my casual more formal and enjoyable :) I have a quick question about the 10 item wardrobe. I'm currently collecting pieces that will fit both work, casual, an evening out, and running errands, it's quite the challenge! But I found that my biggest hurdle is shoes! I'm not the best with heels and ballet flats always scratch the back of my heel. I was wondering if you have any suggestions about shoes that would be appropriate for a law office, running errands(casual), and an evening out? (the all encompassing shoe!)

Oh, and just a little suggestion re footwear in the home. I got into trouble being barefoot or wearing ballet flats around the house with the hardwood and developed plantar fasciitis. So i always tell women if you have hardwood and are on your feet a lot in the hone, wear a shoe with good support or you may pay for it as I have. Crocs are fantastic and if you go online they have some vety cute models that arent the traditional big ugly ones. Thats what i wear. :)

Hi, I have a question. It is important to have the wardrobe that matches the life style and matches the personal style. The problem is I feel the best looking kind of like a lumberjack. Comfortable shoes like trapers or converse and sports jacket, but I work in an office I need to look elegant. In a blazer and heels I feel like I'm dressed as someone else. Lately I have big problem with shopping, because I hate official clothing and I can't afford to buy the clothes that I like, cause I don't really have occasions to wear them. Any advice?

The mystery flower is a Scabiosa, also known as Pincushion flower. Your bouquet was lovely. :-) Thank you for your videos and your books. I am in the process of listening to them on audio. I wish you had read them, though. The mechanical voice is rather irritating, but I love the content, so I am slogging along.

i have had to refine my style lately. I recently had a mastectomy with some reconstruction and everything is still healing so not only have i had to wear loose clothing but i also need to wear bold prints so that people can't see the craziness that is going on right now under my shirts . I can't stand it. I am looking forward to going back to fitted , lovely clothing- which is more my style.
Another issue i have is I am in Miami. it is STILL in the 90's here, so there is no fall per se. Even.Even wearing fall colors looks ridiculous down here in the land of forever tropical. I am so envious of people who can change up their wardrobe with the seasons. any suggestions?
P.s. after your alla turca video, i was inspired to re learn an instrument. I played the piano a million years ago, and decided to pick up the keyboard . I purchased a keyboard with piano sounds and am self teaching with a book I purchased. My ultimate goal will be in the next 6 months to be able to play alla turca.
Also, I am so excited that October arrives this week..that means i am that much closer to receiving Polish your Poise in the mail!!
