I have an old '96 Jeep ZJ project vehicle. It needed a whole new rear axle assembly. So I put in a remanufactured one with a TruTrac differential. With just heavy duty Auto Zone shocks, the stock 4.0L makes a pretty good adventure vehicle. I did upgrade the tiny 215/75-15 tires to General AT2 255/70-15 tires. It does fine in the desert near Jawbone and Red Rocks State Park. I really have been working too much lately to go much of anywhere with it. I did buy a '23 Jeep Wrangler Sport S Lattitude for my wife the other day. That will probably get TruTracs front and rear, with the stronger axle shafts. I am considering portals from Weld74 instead of a lift kit or gear change. I like the idea of moving the pumpkins higher. This Jeep is intended to be towed behind our diesel Ram 2500 carrying our 4Wheel pop up camper. It is fun watching all your videos over the years. I live over the hill from you in Quartz Hill. I have been on many of the streets and off road places you show.

I don't think you drive in snow often (Maybe if you go to big bear or something?), but if you do, know that an automatic locker can cause snap oversteer. Sometimes there wont be enough traction just driving to cause it to lock (it needs differentiating forces to lock). But then one tire may spin more on a corner or uneven piece of road, and it will suddenly lock and cause the back end to kick out. You get used to it, and you have an automatic will make it less likely. But something to be aware of. You may also sometimes get the "bang" that happens after pulling out onto a road where the locking collars are between teeth, and then they will slip and lock. Which will cause a loud bang, and make the truck jerk to one side a bit. And since you have an automatic, you should not need to worry about "shift steer". Where you shift from typically 1st to second on a slight corner, the locker will cause the vehicle to go straight instead of the slight turn. But I have only ever had that happen with manuals.
I've run front and rear Detroit's on my 1998 f3-50 and once you get used to it, its no big deal all that changes when its icy or snow-covered roads then you have be paying 100% attention to what your driving on or it will spin you fast lol that was a quick learning curve
For the people interested in a auto locker I have a Detroit locker in my Tacoma and it is quite. I’ve had it in there for over 60k of daily driving and I drive pretty aggressive and it does lock occasionally while turning sharp but I drive it sometimes over a week without it locking up but when your on the gas pretty hard it locks no matter what. And I’ve not noticed any extra tire wear I will be putting a Detroit or grizzly in my next vehicle. I’ve also taken the truck down the dragons tail before and it was slightly annoying there but other than that it is by no means a nuance

@@AutoEdits you should have no problem with that setup, I did mine with a TH400 so no overdrive, 3500rpm at 60mph. I run a 14 bolt in that truck now with a yukon 3.73 and an eaton trutrack. The truck is retired from heavy hauling, so I just set it up for a bit more freeway speed. Thanks for the reply!

your shock bushing is busted or maybe loose; when you feel more noise from one side cornering is probably something slightly bent or out round (spider gears are really forgiving in this aspect) but it shouldn't be an issue in the future.

Great suggestion! I've only been in the ice once and since this truck makes so little power (LOL) it didn't feel that sketchy but I get ya. The only time I really feel like it's a bit sketchy in my usage is in emergency stopping or "panic stop" situations on the freeway from high speeds... the locker combined with drum brakes creates some drama in that scenario but otherwise live able.

Great video. Is this similar to those lunchbox lockers? I got a 2000TJ and thinking about getting this now. I also thought the clicking noise would be loud enough it would sound like you got major mechanical problems 😅😅
It’s not that loud, I used the audio from the GoPro right next to the diff ... with the windows up you don’t really hear it. The grizzly is MUCH stronger than a lunchbox locker and better all around.
OK, Yukon's version of Detroit Locker. Funny when riding with people who don't know and it starts clicking....Dude, what's wrong with your car! 4.56 seems little steep but then you got those 35's. Let us know if your gas mileage suffered a lot. You're lucky to have old school shop like that near by. They're becoming few and far between.
In snow it is great... I've only driven icy mountain roads once and it was fine. Not having much power really makes it kind of easy but I was cautious the whole time.
Could you share how the locker responds to wet roads, snow, mud and daily street driving after driving it for a while? I'm considering running one in a crew cab long box 4th gen Ram. Thanks.
Nice work. I’d also like to know how you like the Milestar Pat MT’s as a daily drive tire. I’ve got 36K on the set I have now, and only get to off road a few time a year. Suggestions?
great video. i have a 97 Tahoe 4x4 and i've worked with Anthony at Hoopers for a long time. They've done 2 10 bolt rears ends with eaton posi's in my Tahoe and i finally asked them to upgrade me to the 14 bolt and eaton posi. so far so good. i'm also running 4.56 gears. its perfect for this truck. im gonna look into doing more of a locker in my 14 bolt because the eaton i have in the 14 bolt is a bit disappointing. im also curious if there is a posi unit for the front of these trucks. i understand a locker in the front is not ideal due to the weak components up front. mainly the case.
Hello. I know this question has nothing to do with gears but have you ever experience problems with the blinkers not working and reverse lights? Need help. :)
That wasn't the diff clicking. The two back tires were locked up and thankfully doing all the work for that climb. The shocks are completely worn out so the front end was hopping and that noise was the transfer case and front diff ... not good driving on my part to let it do that but I just wanted to see how it solved itself.
@@AutoEdits I watched that other video (great videos by the way), but maybe missed a part about the G80. Is the G80 junk in general? Does it just not function well or is it just prone to breaking down?

I have the same year tahoe that I am starting to do a similar build...with everything you have done so far what are you out of pocket in parts and labor for things you couldnt do in your own garage?

Very cool build so far. Did you consider making quick-disconnects for the front sway bar? You get tons more articulation out of the IFS that way.
You don't want to do that on an ifs it's a recipe for a broken cvs or even tie rods.
Thanks for the suggestion... would doing that put the half shafts in too much stress?
@@AutoEdits I run 37s on a 2500 2001 burb. No sways up front and really beat on it in moab and in Colorado. CVS can take it. It's the tie rods you need to worry about
Half ton CV’s grenade if you are spinning tires and bouncing the front end while turning. If you don’t wheel like that you might be fine haha
Great work mate!
Thanks!
Seemed to run good even without the mods!!
You are right... it did run pretty dang good before the re-gear but it feels perfect now.
Going with the Eaton TruTracks
Very smart choice.
Nice work once again, love the shirt BTW, I hope she is mending up well. Do you have any advice about a rear end upgrade for a 2008 Toyota Tundra 4x4?
Howdy, pinto is doing pretty good thanks! Email the guy I put in the description from Yukon and ask what he recommends!
@@AutoEdits Thanks Jason!
Yes, exactly like a Detroit! I didn't re-calibrate the speedo yet but I'll do my best to check mileage on this next trip!
Looking Good, The Height looks nice and the tires looking awesome. With the gear change, how is the gas mileage also what's her name?
Thanks! It still gets around 18mpg on my last trip and it doesn't have a name yet!
How are the grizzly lockers work in snow and icy conditions? What are the pros cons ?I live in Canada
In snow it is great... I've only driven icy mountain roads once and it was fine. Not having much power really makes it kind of easy but I was cautious the whole time.
Nice upgrades, fun video! Hows Pinto? I'm sure he missed coming for the ride
She’s getting better very slowly... thanks for askin!
Could you share how the locker responds to wet roads, snow, mud and daily street driving after driving it for a while? I'm considering running one in a crew cab long box 4th gen Ram. Thanks.
I would also like to know
Nice work. I’d also like to know how you like the Milestar Pat MT’s as a daily drive tire. I’ve got 36K on the set I have now, and only get to off road a few time a year. Suggestions?
The Patagonia MT's are a great all around tire. Love them as a daily driver.
great video. i have a 97 Tahoe 4x4 and i've worked with Anthony at Hoopers for a long time.
Great to hear from you!
@@AutoEdits do you know of a front posi, limited slip or locker for the front of the Tahoe?
@@miaatch1 I do believe Yukon makes a limited slip for the front of these but I don't know the part number.
Hoopers is legit 👍
Yep.
That Tahoe is super sick dude! Love it!
Appreciate it!
Hello. I know this question has nothing to do with gears but have you ever experience problems with the blinkers not working and reverse lights? Need help. :)
Check the bulbs then check the relays/fuses.
Wooooooooooo!!! More Tahoe content!!
Yeah buddy!
Hey Jason, I was wondering if you started to experience any hum after installing the grizzly locker?
I really paid attention tonight when I took it out for dinner and the thing is quiet as can be back there.
At the end when in the dirt, why was there still clicking going up the hill? At that point it should have been locked.
That wasn't the diff clicking. The two back tires were locked up and thankfully doing all the work for that climb. The shocks are completely worn out so the front end was hopping and that noise was the transfer case and front diff ... not good driving on my part to let it do that but I just wanted to see how it solved itself.
Did your Tahoe have the OEM locking differential on it before you put the Grizzly locker on? I think it is designated The G80?
It did but it was junk. ua-cam.com/video/4HAc4h4dOlk/v-deo.html
@@AutoEdits I watched that other video (great videos by the way), but maybe missed a part about the G80. Is the G80 junk in general? Does it just not function well or is it just prone to breaking down?
@@mikezuerlein6564 This one had 225,000 miles on it so it was understandably weak but I've learned from many comments on these videos that some people like them but most don't.
I would have gone truetrac but that's just me. Lockers don't like ice roads you just wait and see and you will see it fast once your on an icy road.
I drove a few snowy roads in Lake Tahoe over the weekend and it did pretty good so far... the worn out steering was my biggest concern!
Sweeta! I really like those milestar tires. With their hybrid tread best of both worlds.
How is the 4wd system on that chevy?
Awesome man!
Thank you! Cheers!
So for clarification, this diff is locked 100% of the time, apart from when doing tight turns, which is the clicking noise?
You got it!
@@AutoEdits thank you! Awesome rig, used to have a 98 Tahoe before going to school, one hell of a rig and I miss it! Great video and best of luck on your build!
just found your channel and i love your videos especially the ones with the tahoe, i have a red 2000 z71 obs.
how are the tires so far?
Love them... nothing not to like.
@@AutoEdits sorry i should have been more specific, do they rub have you had any issues?
@@robmora2703 go watch his tire install/test video!
@@daveburkart2363 iv seen it, what i’m wondering if he’s had any issues since that video, after a couple weeks has he had any issues
One of the biggest downsides to the gm trucks is not having the ability to have a front locker. I always hated not having it when i needed it.
I would worry, the front housing looks fragile.
@@AutoEdits it is. Which is probably why they dont have one.
I put 85w140 gear oil in my axles and I can't even hear them on the street. Been daily driving with auto lockers for a few years now.
Good suggestion, might try that.
@@AutoEdits I put in that yukon diff friction modifier and it definitely helped with a whining noise from the diff
You didn't like the g80 locker in it from factory?
My g80 on my Avalanche works ok, no clicking noise when on pavement but the wheel has to slip a turn or 2 for it to engage
That thing was fully worn out after 232K miles or broke because it would one wheel any chance it got.
Yukon is a great replacement over the g80. g80 is good for oem, but the yukon is an upgrade.
Gov bombs blow up often. Avoid for serious off pavement use.
I don't think I could live with that clicking on my daily
The sound you hear is from the camera right next to the differential... from inside the cab it's not that bad at all.
I have the same year tahoe that I am starting to do a similar build...with everything you have done so far what are you out of pocket in parts and labor for things you couldnt do in your own garage?
The gears and locker install cost about $1500
Great Suburban! Any regrets going with the Yukon grizzly?
My only regret is not going off roading more. It was very live-able in the city and on the freeway but my work just kept me from enjoying it on camping trips as much as I wished.
Great video 🤟
Thanks!
Looks like the front has positive camber
Yes it does. The suspension is fairly worn out.
@@AutoEdits i recently swapped out my front unit bearing hubs on my jeep and even though they seemed fine they were the culprit in some negative camber i had even after putting all new heavy duty ball joints. Keep an eye on em with those 35s.
Road trip! Road trip! Road trip!!
It’s happening!
