My cat Tammy never cared for being held but when we were evacuated due to a fast moving wildfire it was very stressful for both of us. We drove to safety and I parked in front of the local supermarket and was sitting there wondering what I should do next. It was all very frightening and and as I sat there crying, overtired and overwhelmed, Tammy crawled into my lap and put her paws up around my neck and comforted me. We actually fell asleep like that and awoke a bit later to find a friend at the window offering help. She’s been through a lot with me and she’s my dearest pet pal ever. Thanks for being there for me when I really needed it Tammy, you’re a great kitty.
I have seven cats sharing space with me. 3 of the 4 Tom's like being held, they kinda act like it's a neener neener moment to the other cats. One of the 3 girls likes it, but it seems it's more of a true enjoyment of our closeness. The others are very affectionate but aren't into even sitting in my lap. All of them will bounce all over the bed every night. I never know who will be where when I wake up. Cats are to be accepted and loved on their terms.
When i carry my cats around, i support their back feet with one hand and loosely wrap my other hand around them for support of their front paws. This way the cat can jump down whenever they want and don't feel restricted. I do give them occasional hugs.
I had a cat who refused to be held it was her rules, so that was that. Phoebe, my 7 year old cat, loves to be patted brushed and fuzzed over, but when she has had enough, that's it,no more. It makes me feel special when she is all over me.❤
Thank you for the info. My grandcat Muning allows me to hold her only for a brief period of time. She doesn't like to be held. Now I understand why....they want to be in control. Thank you again. 🐈🐱😻
I have had all sorts of cats. Right now I have one who loves to be held, he will even hop right up on your lap if you are doing something else to be held, one who can be held when you are sitting very still in bed, and one who does not want to be held at all. She was badly abused before she came to live with me and her way of showing affection is sitting in the same room as you are and occasionally allowing petting. Although she does have to get butt scratches before she eats every single meal.
I consider cats to be a good creature to teach consent - when they don't want to be touched, they don't want to be touched. My cat doesn't mind being picked up, and is definitely a shoulder cat; but she trusts me and has a good relationship with me. When my mother comes over she immediately wants to pick the cat up, and while the cat will briefly accept it, she'll start kicking away and that's when you discover those little cat legs have a surprising amount of strength when they put their weight into it. Cheeky is very much a cat that will come to you when she's ready and feeling comfortable - my mother is used to dogs instantly seeking affection so is less accustomed to it. But once patient and calm, the gentleness and respect for Cheeky's space will be richly rewarded by a shoulder cuddle and some head bunting! Just give her a little time.
I have had a lot of cats in my 71 years - I currently have 5 (4 are from the same colony). Most of them have a "16 second rule." I can pick them up and hug and snoodle them -- so long as I am done in 16 seconds! Even then my cats sleep and nap with me and sit with me as I play the piano or use this laptop. We are physically very close -- but just don't pick them up for holding. BTW, I can't pickup and hold my wife either!
Rocky fights being held and won't even sit up beside me. If I get too close to him he moves away. Yet he LOVES being petted and brushed if I am standing up and bending over, and he sleeps on my bed more often than not - though not up against me even through the covers. The thing is, he weighs 16-18 pounds and is stronger than I am (I'm 74). So not being able to pick him up means I can't take him to the vet. He's about 5 1/2 years old now (I've had him for 2 1/2), and he's never been there. I might be able to rassle him into the carrier... but then it is too heavy for me to lift. With my previous heavy cat I put the carrier in the car first and then carried him to it. Can't do that with Rocky. All I know about his background is he was taken to the shelter as a stray, was microchipped but there was no response when listed owner was called, so maybe he was abandoned. It makes me sad that he won't cuddle, but if I have to live with that, so be it. I worry about being unable to get him to the vet, though. (I also wish my 8-year-old, who only weighs 8 pounds, didn't dislike him so much.) Anyone have ideas?
Most of my cats over the years liked to be held. But I would only put them over my shoulder and support their butt. My girl Kayla when I would pick her up it's like her butt hit the floor. She used the pick up to get a good stretch.😻💙🐾🐾
I believe that when she was at my family's home, a neighbor visited and demanded to keep her on their lap, a loud child. But when I began to take care of her, she would crawl into my lap and sleep for about 10 minutes and go to bed. Now, she has to be in the perfect mood with TOTAL evidence of her having complete authority of our kingdom 😅😂 this is very involved 😊
I taken my 6 month old male cat to the vet to get him fixed, rode him in my trailer of my ebike as he was not happy being away from home ever. But it was the Vet visit , the experience with assistant or techs is the reason he does not allow anyone pick him up/ He has a fierce attitude about seeing anyone else besides myself. But he remains around my home as his Kingdom of not straying out and about.
Thank you this post is very helpful . One of my cats was adopted from an overcrowded rescue, she was brought in as a feral kitten and spent 4 years there. She is very cuddly and affectionate but won't let me pick her up. I feel horrible because I have to medicate her so I can bring her to the vet for her nail clip. Do you have any suggestions?
We have 8 cats - all indoors 100%. I know cats require agency but I do make it a point to pick each of them up on a regular basis in case I ever HAVE to pick them up. None of them struggle or try to get away although it's easy to see that they don't enjoy it. I never force things and we demonstrate mutual respect which is kinda sweet in a way. We also keep several carriers placed out in different spots in the house and they use them for naps regularly.
My Wendy is very affectionate all the time but hates to be picked up or held. I had four other female cats they loved to be held. They would even get in my lap and sleep. Wendy will shred me to pieces if I try to hold her but otherwise she follows me around everywhere. They all love to be petted and brushed.
My kitty doesn't like to be held or picked up either. She's not cuddly but she's friendly. She follows me all around the apartment and will lay next to me on the bed. She chatters at me all day long and loves to play fetch. I can live with that! She does like to get Chin rubs and scratches on the head about 50% of the time.
My niece gave me a purebred Himalayan that she found after a breeder had thrown her away like trash. After I learned she hated to be picked up we became best friends. I loved her so much and she would sit right beside me and even have little snacks off my plate. She was so sweet. She would greet me by jumping on the table and giving me a kiss. I learned not to pick her up by watching cats/Himalayans 101. I didn't know before watching it that a cats breed can tell you a lot about them.
When I adopted my last baby she was in a cage with 3 others. She was 4 mo old. She came right up to me and I held her in my arms for an hour. I told her foster mom I'd come back the following weekend to get her. After I adopted her she was always kinda standoffish. I maintain to this very day her foster mom switched her with one of the others. Buttons had anger management issues. Still I loved her every second til the day she died at 16.
I'm not used to having a cat that doesn't like to be held. She will come to me for only very gentle pets, when the circumstances are perfect. Figuring out her code has been an adventure 😅❤🎉
My Skye does not sit on my lap ever nor to be picked up. Got him at SPCA when he was 7 weeks old. My other cat, also a rescue, and 17 years old, loves sleeping on my lap.
She's a cuddle bug, always velcroed to me. But she despises being picked up. But I did have one who loved it so much she would actually dig her claws around the back of my neck to hug me harder. 😆
One of my girls will sit in my lap, but only if it's her idea. She's very affectionate. My other girl doesn't sit in my lap, but she snuggles next to my feet. I'm happy letting them take the lead.
My senior rescue Persian was neglected for 9 years. She absolutely adores being held and will demand it incessantly so. Top the point that I've caved and bought a baby wrap to be able to have her held while using my hands 😂 my boy Persian I've had since a kitten, he hates being held. Personality really is the biggest factor I think! Just like with us humans.
I have two cats- one loves to be held and cuddled. My other cat has never liked to be held. He loves to lie beside me on the couch and to have his tummy rubbed. He actually calls me to come into the family room and to pet him. They are both love bugs in their own way.
I've had my cat Jack since he was just 6 weeks old. He has never liked being held in the traditional ways. He always wants up but will go straight to my shoulders. He does have one way he will let me hold him, like he is a loaf of bread stretched out along the length of my arm. With my palm up he will put his front paws in my hand and let his hind legs hang off my arm. He will sit there until my arm cant hold him up any more, but if I move my arm in to attempt to bring him closer he will want down. Leave my arm out in front of me and he's all good.
My 2 cats enjoy being close to me and will sit and sleep next to me. I've always known that cats prefer not to be held or carried so I respect their wishes. On occasion, I will pick them up as the need arises but only if it is necessary. When I do I make sure to support both their front and back paws. Although the carrier doesn't come out until one is due to be taken to the vet if I leave it out and open one of the cats will usually find their way inside and end up napping in there.
I haven’t attempted to hold my outside cat in months, and never really picked her up before that, anyway…just to take her to the vet, and that was the second time she approached me & the first time she let me touch her…I just went for it, had to get those shots, had to be spayed
My Abbey doesn’t like being picked up. She has arthritis and she has furball issues so I think it hurts her tummy. We must listen to them, they’re not ornaments❤️
My two seniors dont mind if pick them and cuddle a bit but as soon as they want out i put them on the ground or table nearby my cats arent fan of the carrier but they kinda acept it and dont fus they might give a meow out of protest
My cat doesn’t like to be picked up. I got her at 5 years old so I don’t know if something happened before or she never has liked it. She’s a funny and sweet girl otherwise so I don’t pick her up and we’re both happy.

No matter how many cats one has, it never gets any easier, does it. My heart goes out to you. Please remember you gave her the best life she could have and then a peaceful and painless farewell. Give thanks to Bastet that your girl lived so long and her end didn't come too soon from some painful illness. And I'll share one thing I learned through painful experience, though it may not be right for you - don't wait too long before adopting another. I waited 12 years after my most loved boy died, and it was a big mistake. Two years has turned out to be about the right amount of time. Love and hugs to you.

Excellent video and information. I love this channel! 😻
Great information ❣️
It’s very important to understand cats.
Nice informative video!
Love your channel. And always looking forward for the next video. Very very informative.
Great pleasant speaking voice.

Clip them yourself.I do my dogs.I have 5 strays and never had there nails clipped but they use scratching posts a lot.
Though my Abigail is very loving and enjoys lying beside me and napping, loves scritches and pets, picking her up is downright dangerous!

I do pick up my Ziva kitty sometimes but I never force her to stay as soon as she starts squirming I find a place to ease her down

I had a kitten once (rescued from a dumpster) that liked to ride around on my forearm.
My cat doesn’t like to be picked up. I got her at 5 years old so I don’t know if something happened before or she never has liked it. She’s a funny and sweet girl otherwise so I don’t pick her up and we’re both happy.

Our kitty kitty gives and takes on being held. I do it for a short time and allow him to go after a few moments to minutes.

I have 2 of those.
🐱 good evening all 🐱 since Flash got out by mistake for 18 days he don't want to be held he use to but will lay in the chair next to me
When I was little, we had a cat named Sebastian and I used to squeeze him to make him meow and my sister would yell at me to stop.
Mine don’t mind if my arms are around them, but they prefer if their feet are touching a surface of some kind.
Before i pick up my kitty, ill ask if i may pick him up. When he stands up for me, i know he will let me pick him up.
I make sure the bottom of all 4 paws are touching my arms and hands. I read they feel more secure if their paws are touching something.
Mutual respect and healthy boundaries are key for both of us. Im not his slave nor do i disrespect him as a cat. We are partners.
My older cat feels that being held means meds. He'll sit in my lap all day long, but doesn't like being picked up!
My cat, even though he loves to be around the family doesn't like to be held for a long time. Maybe 10 seconds at the most. But I never, ever try to force it on him.
I think it’s also got something to do with the type of energy the human is projecting. Plus cats remember everything.
Stormy loves to be picked up and held when I took her to an outdoor brunch everyone was asking how I got her to be so affectionate I did a DNA test on her and it turns out she's primarily Ragdoll
Pepper has taken to little his and will move into a position for big hugs. It has taken 4 years to get to this point.
We have one outgoing little Siamese mix that doesn't mind being held as such but he does NOT like to be picked up or even be off the floor. Unless you're willing to get down on the floor and give him cuddles there with his feet on the floor holding him really isn't an option. All our other cats are downright nuisances about getting attention and being held.
I dont recall my cat ever trying to hold me.
My girls don't like being picked up, but are really loving and affectionate. They love to be cuddled in bed 🥰🥰
The baby cat will tolerate it for a while. The 7 year old isn’t having it for a second 😭
Cats don’t like to be picked up and held because they don’t like their feet off the ground.
Ummm…my cat waits for me to pick him up & carry him to the big bed. I have been picking him up since he was a baby & he gives me sugars brah
My senior cat has become very feeble and it seems quite likely her vet visit today will have to end in merciful euthanasia. 😢😿 I will probably have to leave this channel so I am not reminded of my companion of almost 20 years.

Oh, sweety.....we all go through this...the get old, just like humans. But, look at it in a better way, we can choose to either make it easy for them or they suffer. Been in your shoes many many times. And still three😺in the house.

And I'll share one thing I learned through painful experience, though it may not be right for you - don't wait too long before adopting another. I waited 12 years after my most loved boy died, and it was a big mistake. Two years has turned out to be about the right amount of time. Love and hugs to you.
