Okay I'm sure others in the comments have said this, but the self-destruct was not actually meant to take out Dutch. It's just what the Yutja do to prevent their gear and equipment from being reverse-engineered. It'll leave nothing salvageable, and it's only used if a Yutja is dying. As for the laugh, yeah it's creepy but to me to has another meaning. Respect. Yutja are a warrior species, death in battle is the ultimate way they want to go. His deciding to laugh after setting the timer was to let Dutch know, 'You were an entertaining fight human!'. He felt Dutch was as much a skilled warrior as any other Yutja. Dutch outsmarted him and defeated him, and in a way earned the Yutja's respect.
@Kco YT right?, especially when you consider the fact that dying in battle is the highest honor they can receive so why not laugh on your way to the Gods?
I agree, I've always thought that the countdown for the bomb is loud and obvious on purpose, the predators have a strict code of honor when it comes to hunting, it wouldn't make much sense for them to be sore losers. They just destroy every possible trace of evidence, while giving whatever creature that beat them enough time to flee. Except maybe for the xenomorphs who are just too dangerous to be left alive.
@@DrRazernij agreed but the only thing that got me about the bomb the fact that a small nuke is a very loud way to maintain stealth lol I mean even though the Predators have implosion technology they did it in AVP requiem but at some point if one Predator thought the best way to maintain stealth is to make sure no one's around to say anything
What makes this movie special is that it's spans multiple genres in it's run time. it's starts as a campy action movie which was popular in the 80s. Which is why they have goofy one liners and sound effects. then halfway through it's starts to turn into a suspense film and quickly switches to horror. A film for history.
Look at it now, it was the better part of a bait and switch which would have been more impactful if I had gone in not knowing what it was about. Awesome film!
@@Alteori Yeah the opening act was meant to lull the audience into thinking it was a safe, cheesy action flick, which makes the second act more intense because it's such a swerve if you aren't expecting it. It worked better back then, but is still a pretty good movie!
@@Alteori I do love how it sets up the main characters as über badasses and makes you think they are unstoppable before introducing this creature even more badass and powerful than them, it's almost like showing a scale of it's power
I think one of the best lines of the movie, that never fails to break my heart, is after Blaine (Jesse Ventura) is killed, Dutch tells Mac (Bill Duke) "he was a good soldier," Mac responds saying "he was... my friend..." Bill Duke's delivery of the line was absolutely amazing, and I think is definitely not given enough credit for his performance in Predator.
@@Alteori hey Alteori could you please do a review of the Free Willy 1993-1997 trilogy in honor of Keiko the whale who played as Willy in the first film and became the very first captive orca released into the wild long term from 1996-1998-2003 but sadly died in the ocean at the age of 27 in Iceland after suffering from pneumonia this is my most favorite orca whale film trilogy of all time including the rebirth of mothra trilogy the 2009 Avatar movies disney and others
@@Alteori and also Alteori did you know that Kevin Peter Hall that portrayed the predator in the first film sadly died at 36 years old too young in 1991 thanks to pneumonia
Honestly, this movie and the sequel cemented the Predator as my favorite alien in the AVP universe. It’s just so unsettling when they’re hunting someone, turning the voices of their friends against them. You just know it’s gonna catch you, and you don’t know where it is. Terrifying.
Big fan too...once...I had dream where a predator was chasing me through my neighborhood.. Damn it was scary and so real..i could literally feel the fear through my veins...horrifying experience.. Woke up soaked in bed..
First of all young vixen, the one liners are an 80s ACTION genre thing. It was specific to that genre and even more so for Arnie because he made people realize catch phrases like "I'll be back" a thing. So all action heroes do quips and have one liners. But it was specific only to that genre. Aliens was a horror film and so no one liners or quips.
Alien was straight up horror so none of those there but Aliens had it's fair share of memorable quotes and one liners and Ripley even gets her own with; "Get away from her, you bitch!"
Originally, Dutch was supposed to win when he and the Predator fought man to man but it was arnie who said that wouldn't make any sense. He told the director John McTiernan (same dude whot directed Die Hard) i can't beat him. He's a monster. I'm just a man," and the story was re-written with Dutch having to use his wits and his expertise in guerilla warfare to survive
Sounds great and it was great. Arnold has some moments of creative genius. Now if The Rock was playing Dutch, he wouldve insisted that the Predator would become his b***h. Just picturing that one-sided fight in favor of the puny Rock makes me want to throw up.
about the cringe stuff at the start of the film in the gerilla fight: that's basically a "trick" to make the movie watchers think this is your average 80's badass soldier hero movie. I personally think this movie is a deconstruction of the "invincible manly hero" that was done to death back in those times and it is brilliant. Imagine you're the averrage movie goer in the 80's and this is your first time watching this movie. You see the intro and is like "oh, some martians will appear and the heroes will kick their green ass!" and then after 30 minutes BAN, the first soldier die and you're like "OH SHIT".
It's also to establish that these guys are a super elite group. Like taking down these guerillas is such a walk in the park that they can goof around while doing it. It give a stark contrast to the fear and desperation they show when the Predator is hunting them. Like, if these badasses are terrified and getting torn apart, what chance to us normal people have?
You finally watched it! One of the best movies ever made... it seamlessly flipped between 3 genres. Action, horror, survival horror. Also a very diverse cast that they didn't go on about... they were all characters with character arcs that got along.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG OMG I was like, nowadays, the way people talk you would think that no diversity around those times and Predator was filled with it. the good thing is that they were just characters who happened to be different colors and their colors are not What mattered.
Cringe?? That was excellent comedic timing that actually worked under the circumstances. These are just a bunch of badasses in their element having a great time taking care of business. Thats the point. They're so good and so comfortable, they crack one liners for their own entertainment.
@@Waterbug1591 ok. I mean.. Nobody was asking, but since you're putting it out there, I really can't imagine anyone placing The Predator 2018 anywhere higher than the bottom most tier.
Exactly. This Special Unit is basically the Colonial Marines in Aliens. Theyre funny because theyre so arrogant. But when put in the s**t, they fall apart and become human beings again.
@@faded1to3black really anyone who does that is probably has the same braincells as the (very little amount of) morons who defend ssktjl (and there is no way I can see that)
I would just like to clarify 3 things, 1 the self destruct isn't to kill the enemy its too dispose of the body and technology of the predator 2 the reason the predator never saw dutch while he was preparing is because he was busy cleaning Billy's bones to give dutch a chance to rest and be at his peak And 3 the reason its so silly and campy in the begining is to trick the audience into a false opinion of the movie so when it gets serious and the unkillable action heros start dying its more tense and impactful, other than that (and the jab at the laugh, i don't care what you say its awesome :p) the video is amazing as always. Your humor and personality are so fun and I love the editing and memes you use.
Don't forget that the Predator fired at Dutch's weapon, not at Dutch himself, which explains why it wasn't a lethal shot like when he blasted the other soldiers. At least, that's my defense for that scene.
He wasn't actually trying to get rid of his own body, he was trying blow up his own tech. Yutja weapon technology is the most advance weapons technology in the entire universe. If other cultures got their hands on it and use it for political gain and not sport like them, it could spell disaster for the universe.
Fun Fact: John McTiernan did not direct the first action scene or the raid on the village which is why the tone is different from the rest of the movie. I don't think he would have had Arnold say all those lines if he was. But then again, he was a big hit at the time and Arnold was known for his one liners from the Terminator series.
But he was also very reserved about being casted as a hero in movies. Arnold has once said in the terminator 2 he questioned wether or not he could pull it off "everybody knows me as the guy who kicks down the door and shoot everybody." And now he is best known for some of his more heroic roles in his career.
I don't know about you, young lady, but when i watched this movie i was roughly 16 and i am 41 now , but still can't forget the time the first time i watched this movie : ) ... those cheesy one-liners were the thing of that time , the action, suspense and horror... it's all carved in my memory .. and i am still fascinated by these aliens or monster sci-fi movies... this video gave me the proper amount of nostalgia i needed : ) thank you!
Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, 7'2" was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch. Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit for the movie and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. Sonny Landham, RIP whom played Billy hired a bodyguard to protect people from him as he was prone to violent outbursts. Landham said in an interview that, "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us." It was 110 degrees in the shade while it was 42 degrees at night. It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult. It was a box office and critical success making $100 million dollars ($350 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace.
Oh HELL YEAH, this was the first horror movie I ever watched with my dad. Loved this film and the core memories I made with my pops Old Arnold will forever be the OG action hero
Imagine the thought process of one of the predator victims “this creature believes I’m worthy for a proper fight, so instead of quickly killing me,he will give me the opportunity to fight and get beaten to death like a true warrior…wonderful”
Billy's character had psychic / esp powers in an earlier unused version of the script, but this was actually incorporated in the novelization of predator, which differs SIGNIFICANTLY from the movie in basically every way.
im pretty sure their self nukes are made for their code of honor aswell which is cool cus sucide bombing someone who beat you 1v1 isen't honor so i think they make it clear what the self distruct is to other species on purpose so they can destroy their tech without killing the victor and they seem to be able to adjust the yeild based on honor cus when dutch kills the pred it goes off like c4 takes out abit of forest in situations were predators are vs xenomorphs or not real victors just very deadly species the bomb on their arm goes off like a nuke taking out acouple of miles around them
@@lordsathariel4384 if I remember correctly, when defected they suicide bomb to retain some bit of honor and to take with them who ever or whatever defected them
@@KeybladeMaster-qs9dr if that's true why in every fiction do they give people warnings if the preds wanted to kill people why do they hand out the info hey your about to be vaporized are they all daft i know they commit sucide as a ritual to retain honor and keep their tech from falling into other species hands but they seem to open about the im commiting ritual sucide to want to kill anyone with it
I will definitely say that the first half of the movie is a product of its time (especially with Arnold as the lead actor, watch any Arnold one liner compilation) most of those buff action stars having quirky one liners while things go boom and they are showing off their rippling muscles.... but especially for audiences back then the whole switch to it being a horror survival was the biggest surprise (especially how well done it was)
Fun fact: James Cameron was on a plane ride with Stan Winston, who was developing the iconic face of the Predator. He was stuck on it. James Cameron simply turned to him and simply said, "Ive always wanted to see a monster with mandibles."
As another commenter stated, the Predator laughing was it's way of warning Dutch about the countdown. A Predator that loses, is about to die must commit ritualistic suicide which for them is a literal miniature nuke. Reason for this is so they leave no tech behind. The Predator wanted to warn Dutch as Dutch won in an honorable and fair fight (as fair of a fight can get when a creature that's 7ft tall and can throw around a 280lb man like a chew toy) that way Dutch could escape. They are a culture heavy on honor and sportmanship to the point that killing just to kill and not for the hunt is considered a crime which automatically dubs you as a criminal worthy to be hunted yourself.
Right, and beside this young blood was lucky to die. i can imagen the elder ones would be to happy about excessive use of the plasma caster agains naked apes.
@@MrAlopex112 They actually wouldn't care too much. If you earned the right to use a Plasma Caster then spam away young man. Most they'd do is make the young hunter face harder prey and remove his crutch so that he can learn to rely on himself more than his tools. In this specific situation though, it was up against higher numbers with guns that can actually hurt it. It would have been considered a hunt were use of a plasma caster is more than acceptable.
The cool thing about the predator, and the xenomorph alien, lets even mention the thing, is that these movies make you want to know more about the creatures. Its not so much about the goofy effects and characters. In alien, two of the biggest mysteries that always leave you with this eerie feeling are, how was lambert killed and what exactly is the other masked alien in the spaceship they found. In "the thing" the mystery was, and still is, whether it has real consciousness. In the predator 1 there were so many unexplained things like why its vision was in infer red, why hunt them using the bare minimum if its capable of interstellar travel? It clearly has a set of rules its hunting by, it leaves the unarmed alone, it honors 1v1, and it doesnt bother with the 50 guerilla men but it chooses the small elite team but why not just kill all of them. It even rips out billies spine but again, why then rip out his spine if its not some ruthless killer. In retrospect its easy to answer these questions now but if you dont know anything about the predator and especially if you watch it when youre young it really captures a lot of your imagination and leaves you with that feeling of wonder and interest to know more. Plus the predator has dreads. That makes him the coolest alien. His dreads be drippin.
An alternate theory for that as well is, right before that the predator snipes Poncho, but doesn’t blow Poncho’s head out like Mac’s or Blaine’s chest. So it’s possible that the predator lowered the energy output of his caster and it was still at that level when he shot at Dutch. I know he shoots the gun, but for people who refuse to believe that fact, there’s a way around the “flub”
@@cato_sicarius dude sorry but your writing is an absolute mess. how did you write this huge paragraph without using a single punctuation mark? wtf bro. you should learn to write and express your thoughts in a reasonable manner. otherwise it's pretty much impossible to understand anything, which is kinda a shame, bc you obviously had a lot to say. 😜
It's been stated that the casters the predators use can have different power settings with varying degrees of damage. 90% of the time after he realized Dutch was far more enjoyable to hunt. They played with their food alot. Not killing them when they had the first chance. the predators tend to seek a challenge, often disarming themselves if their enemies are. Or going or the less eazy kill if they believe the prey is worth it. It killed the others, but it played with dutch. Giving them time, letting them run. Drawing out the hunt
U are talking about the time Dutch was shot by the plasma caster and didn't die or get his arm or something else cut off or just pretty much die right? Well some people in the comments points out that the gun Dutch was holding is in the way of the plasma bolt taking most of the damage while Dutch only take a little damage
If you frame-by-frame it, you can see that the Predator's blast actually hits Dutch's gun and that's why he only gets a couple burns and cuts. Neat detail that I only realized recently.
Honestly I think that why the plasma caster (the predators shoulder gun) didn't cause that much damage to Dutch while it obliterated the rest of the people it hit is because Dutch's gun was in the way of the blast and took much of the brunt of the damage while his arm was hit by the leftover splash damage that's why Dutch survived it while everyone else who was hit by it didn't
It was not just in the way. The Predator was aiming for it. That M-16 with M03 launcher was about the single most manliest thing in the movie. But Billy had the masterkey, and Blaine dear god I need a minigun for ahhhhh hmmmmm duck hunting.
I know this video is a little old now, but if you're still curious, the reason why Dutch screamed like he did, was because it was a 'War-Cry' of a sort. It's a declaration, a direct challenge that he knows the Yautja wouldn't refuse. Dutch was shown to be quite perceptive several times in the movie already, so at that point, I wouldn't disbelieve that Dutch knew exactly what he was doing and knew how the Predator would react to it. The fire was to give Dutch an advantage, the War-Cry was what actually called the Predator.
I can't believe how every person who reacts to or reviews this movie always misses that when the Predator shoots Dutch after killing Billy he hits Dutch's rifle and not him, you can clearly see the rifle being blown in half and the shrapnel from it is what injures Dutch, yet everyone thinks that he just took it despite it blowing through other people.
Just a fun action hint of horror flick from the 80s that still holds up. Also opens the Yautja lore, like how they can mimic any voice and how they live to hunt. Fun facts: 3 actors ran for governor 1 is an iron Man writer and The Predator writer Mandables was an idea by James Cameron And the movie was going to have an alien bug lobster thing who was played by Jean Claude Van Damme but left because he didn't get to do martial arts, so they had to reshoot nearly entirely Hope you look Enemy Mine or Small Soldiers BTW, the edit with the manliest handshake just made it more manly
The original story of Predator, so lets say Predator Alpha stage and with the ability to be switched up, was originally going to be soldiers verses a super soldier kinda of story, human vs super human. But it was looked over and the writers said "it's been done". The went back to a bit of revision and then, looking at what seemed to being coming up in talks, they settled on a "hunter" or some kind. It came about later that they would make the predator the way he was, but they soon found that the formula worked. And it was later that the Predator would be given the extra weapons, and the lore behind him would start to develop, which only started to be looked at at the Alpha stage of number 2.
I'm glad you were able to enjoy the film, despite some of it's old age showing. It's one of my favorites and it really is the best film in the Predator series due to it laying down the groundwork of how to make a damn good suspenseful, action horror. That's unfortunately something the newer films didn't live up to. I'd like to mention a few things here though with what you said, if you don't mind. About the whole Predator mimicking human voices, it's actually explored much better in later films and other media about the Predator species but more specifically in Aliens vs Predator 2010 the video game, you can actually use this feature to bring in human enemies closer to you in order to kill them so it's quite possible that the Predators in-universe can also use this tactic while also putting some paranoia on their prey to make it more interesting to hunt. Also the whole point about the Predator would know where Dutch is because of the fire... well, yeah, that is shown in the film but the whole point of why Dutch does the whole Tarzan scream was to attract the Predator to his location because currently, the Predator is on the other side of the freaking jungle so it wouldn't know where to find Dutch because to the Predator's knowledge, he's lost his prey so he's going to go and try to find something else to hunt or just continue searching somewhere else. One thing I want to say though and I'm sorry, this is the last thing I'll say. I just have a lot to talk about since it's one of my favorite movies... but how in the flying fuck is one of the most iconic laughs from film... "cringe"? Like I don't understand your reasoning why it's cringe, it's literally just Billy's (the Native American guy you keep making fun of) laugh being repeated by The Predator. Like ignoring the fact that it's iconic and just looking at it from a different perspective... still doesn't make sense why it's cringy. I don't know maybe it might be just my blind love for the movie and that's why I don't see it as cringey. You think it's cringy and weird, I think it's freaking badass and it's a nice play on the term "the last laugh". To each their own though. I'm not going to hate on you for saying something like that. Just confused on why you think it's bad. Alright, I'm done. Sorry to waste your time. Hopefully you get the other films a chance but I do warn you... it does go downhill, then back up, then downhill again.
Thanks :D Yeah the laughter part: The reason it was cringey for me is because, and maybe this is because the movie is just old, the Predator was using his laugh. Predator was very scary before that point for me and I think it just became a little too human in my opinion to keep the scare Factor or me afraid of it. It did that disney villain laugh which, by now, is so played out. (I know it's Billy's laugh but still) lol But then again if things were probably different in the 80s. what was scary back then is not necessarily scary now it comes to a lot of movies. They're still elements of this movie that are suspenseful and well done but by today's standards , if we're talking about something that will be more frightening or eerie, it's not as scary. I hope that makes sense I feel like I'm not doing a good job at explaining what I mean 😅
@@Alteori You're welcome. Oh and by the way, an awesome job you did for explaining your reasoning and I greatly appreciate that. I actually can get behind your reason now. Personally don't fully agree with it but I can understand why you wouldn't like the laugh. It does take away from the creepy factor of this seemingly emotionless, unfeeling hunter to then just start talking but I like to think of it as a cool way of expanding on the creature to make it more unique rather than just having it be another movie monster. Having it speak just shows how intelligent this creature is, which gives it (for me anyway) much more terror than just it being an animal looking to eat or just a simple movie monster wanted to kill people just for the lols. Anyway.... you did good, Altie and I respect your opinion. 🤗 Definitely have to agree on your point about it being released in the 80s. Age can hurt a lot of things... even a movie as awesome as Predator but sometimes that's not always the case. It's still loved by millions of people even to this day, which shows how big of an impact it had and obviously, it's age has shown but that's kind of the charm I have with it. For it being released in the '80s and is still regarded as the best film in the series... even after the advancement of technology, storytelling and everything that makes movies, well movies is very fascinating. That's just me though. I'm a massive Predator fan so I have bias but I'm not going to let that stop me from being completely oblivious to the problems as I actually agree with a lot of the points you made about the weird coincidences or film directing errors (that's what I call them) so I'm not a complete douchebag and I hope you don't see me as that.
@@Alteori Best way I could think of, imagine someone you're extremely close with and hearing their distorted laugh but you know they've been killed. Don't know about you but that would scare the shit out of me.
Some fun facts I learn about this movie was that the original unused Predator suit was reused in a other movie called (DNA, 1997). That there had to be security guards protecting everyone from Billy’s actor. And that Kevin Peter Hall played both Jungle Hunter aka The Predator & the black helicopter co-pilot at the every end. This was one of my greatest childhood movies that made be a fan of sci-fi, action, & horror! Also i think Predator 2 is an incredibly unappreciated sequel of greatest degree, same with Predators.
Fun fact : The clicking noise that the Yautja ( species of the Predator ) does during the film was recorded and made by Peter Cullen, voice actor for Optimus Prime in the original Transformers series, Transformers Prime, and all the live action Transformers Movies ( Even the depressingly bad ones. )
@@treyrex5987 The ones directed by Michael Bay. If you’re unfamiliar with those, they are the films with Shia LaBeouf and Mark Wahlberg, they’re fine if you turn off your brain and visually they’re stunning, but they misrepresent the franchise and many people dislike it because of those films, or they like the films, call themselves a Transformers fan, and then the people who’ve actually watched the shows like myself speak to them and are disappointed. It is extremely irritating, and impossible to find a Transformers fan around my age because of the fact all of them either love the movies and don’t understand why that fundamentally doesn’t really make them a Transformers fan, just a fan of generic giant robots punching each other, or they hate the movies and the franchise and can’t look past the movies because of how bad they are. The others are just in between and still don’t watch it because they consider it not worth it, I’ve had so many friends who love shows exactly like say, TFP, but refuse to watch because they think it is similar to the live action movies.
@@MireMiraMe Oh no, I am very familiar with those movies. In fact... they are the very reason why I got into the franchise to begin with. I'm sorry that the films didn't live up to your expectations and that you consider people that like those films to be non-fans of the series but that's not entirely true. Example... I enjoy those films for what they are but still love and appreciate all the TV shows, games and comics that stay true to the G1 Transformers. Hell, I have the complete series of the original G1 cartoon and I wasn't even born around that time, but I can still love and appreciate that as well as the Micheal bay films that stray away from the original. So you can call me a non Transformers fan if you want, I'm not going to stop you but just know that there are plenty of people out there including myself that love everything Transformers... flaws and all.
@@treyrex5987 A short edit before you begin to read this, I repeat myself a multitude of times here, I apologize, you may skip over that which is repeated. The Michael Bay films also hold a special place in my heart, I don’t have anything against the films themselves, I consider them turn your brain off movies but there are plenty of those types of moves that are fun, what I have against the films is what they cause. Which is why I refuse to support them, they cause people to be turned off from the franchise, and while it did get you into it, and I’m happy you found the franchise, in most cases I’m aware of, they make people have the impression that those films are all that Transformers is when it is far greater than said films, the films themselves albeit illogical and mundane due to them misrepresenting the franchise at its core, are fine, they are not horrible films, but they are not good Transformers films due to what the caused. They revitalized the franchise and made one amazing show, that being Transformers Prime, but at the cost of many fans. I find it nearly impossible to get any friend into Transformers unless I’ve known them for a long period of time, nor have I ever been able to complete one of its series with someone until recently. The films are mundane movies which you must remove all logical thinking to enjoy, or simply just view for the fights and choreography, but they caused many opinions to be thrust upon the franchise which are outwardly incorrect. Such as Megatron being a generic one dimensional character without personality, or Optimus being an emotionless psychopath, and many others. They caused many good things, the revitalization, Transformers Prime, etc, but they also caused the worst parts about modern Transformers, and what nearly everyone who is not part of the fandom criticizes the series for. I apologize for repeating myself.
@@MireMiraMe Don't apologize for repeating yourself, you make many good points. Long but VERY good points. I really do apologize that you've had a hard time bringing new fans into the series and it can be really tough when the most popular thing in the Transformers franchise happens to be some of the worse aspects of it... sometimes it's just not everybody's cup of tea though. Even if you offer some of the best dang tea ever created to get somebody to like it, there is going to be people that aren't even interested in tea to begin with to even give it a chance. Learned that the hard way when I tried to get some people to like Godzilla in my younger years at school. It worked out at some points but more often than not, didn't really turn out well. Really though... some people just need to learn for themselves if they want to get into a series or not. Fans will come and go but that's fine, sometimes people get bored of watching or reading about a franchise and fell burned out, others might just want to stick to one thing in a series and call it a day. That's on them though. We can't force them.
12:51 Actually, going through frame-by-frame, I just noticed that the projectile destroyed his gun, and either the projectile ricocheted off it, or the shrapnel from the gun hit his shoulder. Talk about blink and you'll miss it, wow.
Hello, I have heard a lot of people and opinions and I understood that the assault on the camp was a part of the movie to show the superiority of Dutch and his team to other people with just guns, it catches the audience and the predator's attention. Now the predator has a reason to hunt and not just kill them full on.
I love how much fear the director made the audience feel, these are all Big Muscle Men Soliders and yet they are terrified of this creature, not like the more recent ones where the predictor is more jokey
Predator is a very self aware movie that deliberately mocks the tropes of Eighties action cinema, such as the cheesy one liners, the ridiculously exaggerated musculature, the hilariously overblown performative masculinity, and the gun fetishization. All of those things are present and correct, and the movie seems to be shaping up as another stereotypical mindless action romp... apart from periodic, unsettlingly sinister interjections from something otherworldly. The object dropping to Earth from the ship in the opening credits. The horror of the skinned team of soldiers and the evidence that, despite their advanced training and extensive combat experience, they somehow walked into an ambush laid by some foe who left no traces whatsoever. The strange, thermal vision point of view of something watching Dutch's soldiers while remaining unseen. Billy being able to sense something is wrong but not see what is disturbing him (as Alteori says, heavy handed stereotyping with regard to the mystical, sixth sense powers that some writers like to ascribe to First Nations peoples, but for all that still something that contributes to the sense that something is off and this is not, despite surface appearances, your typical Eighties action fare). With the death of Hawkins, the first member of Dutch's team to get taken out, the movie pulls off a full genre flip, going from Eighties action extravaganza with some strange, unsettling elements to sci fi survival horror and creature feature type movie. That shift wrong foots the audience and also redefines your perspective on the characters. They go from hypermasculine, seemingly almost invulnerable overblown muscle men (who 'have no time to bleed', a foreshadowing turn of phrase given that the wound that killed Blaine was cauterized) near effortlessly gunning down the rebels they find themselves ranged against, to vulnerable prey; outmanoeuvred, out fought, and outclassed in terms of technology and combat prowess by the unseen force that is hunting them. All the usual rules of Eighties action cinema - most obviously that big guns and bigger muscles win the day - go abruptly out of the window. Blaine's massive minigun does nothing to protect him from getting cut down without ever even laying eyes on his killer, one heavily muscled soldier after another gets taken out by the Predator with ease, and even Dutch, in the big finale fight, is woefully physically outclassed by his inhuman adversary, surviving by guile and quick thinking, not brute force. Ironically enough, a case can be made that Arnold Swarzenegger's Dutch, despite not being exactly what you would call feminine, is one of the great, unrecognised 'final girls' (so to speak) of horror movie history.
I still love the first Predator movie, it’s such a iconic film. Introduced a awesome cast and a unique alien species that hunts the most strongest prey in the universe, being humans and other species. The Predators are definitely unique, including their culture and way of honor.
I love this movie because it changes genre part-way through. It starts as an action adventure, all the tropes and stereotypes included, then as they try to exfiltrate, it changes to a horror movie. Same thing Halo did, goes from a shoot-em-up blast the aliens game to a horror game.
I absolutely love the Predator movies (2018 is the worst of them all but I still watch it when I’m bored). But the movie that got me into this very cool universe was the first AvP which was a good movie in my opinion. Predator though is by far the best movie in the franchise. Can’t wait for when Prey comes out with the new Feral Predator
If you haven't theres audio tapes about future Dutch after being picked up by special people in Predator Hunting grounds game. You can just yt the tapes though.
12:55 it always annoys me when people do this and I know it's something you can miss easily but still. The predator did not shoot Dutch. The plasma blast hits his gun and a piece of it splinters off and impales him in the shoulder as shrapnel.
The reason the village assault scene doesn't fit the rest of the movie is that it was written, directed and filmed by the 2nd unit who had to take over after most of the primary filming team were ill due to filming on location in the jungle in extreme heat conditions.
The guy who played Billy, they had to have a bodyguard on the set, not to protect him, but to protect the others from him. Well at least according to documentaries. Kevin Peter Hall who played the Predator did such a great job. So sad he died so early :( Also that bit where they shoot the forest, it sounds like WW3 in my room LOL Awesome!!!!! Btw when it shoots Dutch, it doesn't shoot him it shoots his gun. I guess the blood on his shoulder was from the back blast or something, cause no way that body armour is stopping that. Also also.. 16.54 in, that has got to be the best the Predator ever looked in any movie, with the drool and the pale skin and the facial expressions it uses in that scene. They never got is as good as that ever again.
I do love the way you pick holes in things, there are a few imperfections in this film but it is one of my favourite movies of all time. I disagree with your opinion that the start of the film is boring, you acknowledged that the character setup made you care about the characters, Dutch and Dillon need to be established to Dutch's reactions to Dillon's secrets more weight. When it comes to the one-liners, remember this is 1987, without these small comic moments it would have been a very heavy scene to watch. The Predator using Billy's laugh at the end was about sending Dutch a message. What made me smile was your pronunciation of Beret, which made it sound like a small hairpin than a cap. Although not English I am a Brit, you need to revisit your English accent every so often. That need to be a thing. I hope you do Predator 2. I hope you don't do the others, there's a better use of your time. Love your channel. Still miss snarky Alteori a little bit.
@@treyrex5987 For me, it felt cheesy and like the writers were aiming for fan service and really missed the mark. Even though some complain that in the first one it was just a bunch of testosterone-filled meat heads, they had characters. These characters were bad stereotypes. Adrian B was trying to do a Batman / Dutch combo. Great actor and really buffed up for the part, but he didn't feel fresh. The end fight ripped too many lines from the first one to even be called a homage. The Super predators looked silly. bigger is not always better. I have my own opinions that others don't agree with. Even though I love Alien and Aliens, Alien 3 is still my favourite. It's great to have differences in opinion and be civil about it. Thanks for the reply.
I love how you can see the Yautja race always learning from their mistakes from their previous hunts with humans when they lose one of their own. You see them develop new modes of vision for when their prey's heat signature is masked, more intricate weapons to help them take on multiple foes if they need to, and even learn what weapons are more effective against specific races over others. It's just like how real live hunters have evolved in both their equipment and tactics that they use in a variety of different ways. It helps make this species more and more believable as the franchise continues.
my grandfather's favorite movie was Predator. I'm actually named after Blain. this movie will always be a go to action movie and an even better horror movie. thank you for doing the review for it.
Dutch didn't die because the Predator hit his gun and broke it in half. Probably by accident. Also - The messed up laugh at the end - Was Billy's laughter, from at the end of the rebel camp fight.
I would struggle to find any other film that has more masculine machismo than Predator Also I will have you *Respect* THE 1980s oneliners Anyone who says otherwise is a traitor

I’m fairly certain that the first third of this film is a deliberate exaggeration of the then-current action film tropes, including the over-the-top violence and cheesy one-liners. It was a deliberate choice to exaggerate and highlight those familiar tropes, only to violently deconstruct every single one in the last two thirds of the film.
Arnold was known for his one liners in the 80's and 90's. I loved this movie growing up. My dad showed it to me when I was 3 or 4. I'm 30 now but I think violence desensitization isn't for everyone but it worked for me.
I have a very distinct memory of watching this movie with my dad when I was about 7 years old in 1996. The bit where the predator hits the water behind Arnold scared the shit out of me. The last half of this movies pacing is so relentless. Gave me nightmares for weeks.
FYI Billy being the tracker wasn't about stereotypes. The US military has been using native american trackers for over a century and went out of their way to recruit them in WW1/2 and Vietnam. And for this to take place with a spec ops team, post vietnam war makes it more realistic than anything. Granted they kind of hammed his character up.
The part where you had the guys grab hands and there’s an apocalypse happening and it keeps going and and going XD real family guy kind of humor, I love it!
Hey, “stick around” is awesome! One of the best Arnie one liner. Not to mention the sheer amount of stupidity in Alien. It's just that Ridley Scott thinks so much of himself as a great director, a “creator”, that he can't afford to laugh at himself. Covenant is literally a comedy, but with the movie being made with a very serious face, which makes it EVEN funnier. The movie wants to claim science fiction and “high art” while allowing itself to pour gigaliters of blood on the screen like a third-rate slasher. And none of this is intentional.
Ok, first good job on the video I absolutely love this move back in the day and even more so today. But Mac found Jesse's body not Shane's. Sorry I just love the movie and you just made me had to watch it again. Thank you it was awesome 👌. As a teen watching this I loved it. As a adult I realized that a bunch of tough bru-hams got taken out one by one like they where nothing. This is a hidden masterpiece. 🤔. Once I watched a few commentary and underlined meaning in this movie I loved it even more. The second best one would be predators with Adrian Brudy. Not as good but good enough.
Fun fact: if u look close u can see that it was dutch's gun that got hit by the plasma cannon and Dutch was hit with the shrapnel. Ironically doing less damage than a clean hit. Hence the lack of wound. (Sorry probably not the first to say this, just weird how often it gets missed)
The mythbusters tested the mud stopping heat thing using a modern thermal camera. It gave them a minute or two of shielding, then the mud heated up because mud is mostly water, and water is an exceptional thermal conductor.
Blaine is a former wrestler that rivals Schwartzneggar’s strength. Watching him move around with the minigun, they actually had him haul around the M134, and you saw how difficult it was for Mac to pick it from the ground. Ventura (Blaine) is a big, strong dude, and apparently quite nice
4:55 That is a Tokarev TT-33. The Soviet Union's response to America's Colt M1911, chambered in the zipper of a cartridge: 7.62x25 Tokarev. It is an all around cheap and somewhat reliable handgun from the early 1930's. With as many as 1,330,000 being made, a few were bound to end up in the hands of rebels, terrorists, and other unsavory organizations as well. Average retail price on these guns goes for about $150.00-$200.000. Edit: I'm so sorry Alteori. I didn't mean to go on a rant
Fun Fact: The Helicopter Pilot that we briefly see at the end is the guy who played The Predator in both the 1st and 2nd movies. Kevin Peter Hall. The guy was over 7 feet tall. Sadly he was only 35 when he died
My guess is the guy's glove got caught in the trigger and it got stuck firing. This was actually a major problem for soldiers that had to wear gloves so some soldiers were allowed to cut off the finger on their gloves to prevent that.
People who saw this when it came out will feel different about it compared to people watching it with today’s standards. I used to love it as a kid, but it does have a lot of flaws. Still a GD classic either way…
The Predator's blaster didn't hit Dutch directly; it hit his gun. Probably on purpose. Predators like a good fight and, seeing he was the physically strongest human there, it wanted to fight him directly but it had to get rid of his gun first.
Another reason that soldiers seemed so authentic for it's time is that most of the cast was ex military. Hawkins gun guy, Ex Navy Seal. Tracker guy, Ex Army Ranger. Bad ass bald guy, Ex Army Green Beret. Wounded guy, Ex CIA. Butch or Dutch, most people dont know that Arnie served in the Austrian military as part of a Tank crew before he came to the U.S.
The cringey one liners & campy dialogue in the flick was quite brilliant tbf. T'was purposefully done to lull the audience into a VERY false sense of security in the beginning. The switch from campy 80's action flick to straight up horror is pretty fecking drastic for it's time! Ps- The Yautja usually uses their Mimicking abilities to set traps more than anything form what I've seen. I guess they've used it for a TINY bit of conversation as well in a few comics, but I haven't read enough to really verify to what extent. Pps- TBF.... that Plasma round technically missed. Plus, you forget... it's ARNOLD freaking Schwarzenegger! Dude had natural armor WAY stronger than any plot armor back in his hay day! XD
@Alteori I'm so happy that you are reviewing the predator movies now 🙏🤩 Also the predator in this movie 🎥 by his species standards was a Noob. The other predators in the other movies are much more experienced hunters.
12:34 I can explain this part to you, the reason the plasma cannon didn't Peirce dutch is cause the predators have the option to raise and drop the intensity of it and the predator had chose dutch as his main prey, so it wanted a hand to hand fight to pass it's test cause the other predators were watching, this was shown in later movies So the predators aren't killing for fun, their actually participate in there right of passage and are being watched and judged by their elders, which is why they don't attack unarmed or weak people 17:23 oh that wasn't for the enemy 😆, it was the just in case I get caught no one is getting my tech

Hello Alteori. Predator, the first movie how the franchise got started. Looking forward of seeing the Predator movie(s) review. Anyway, another great video, Alteori, I like it, see you in the next one.
Hello Alteori, I just want to say fantastic review. Predator is one of my favourite movies from the 80s and I love the jokes. "Stick around" "knock knock" I was born in 1998 and my dad showed me this movie when I was fifteen back in 2013. I also really like Predator 2 as well, any way thank you for the review, have a good day and greetings from Australia.
The predator was mimicking Billies laugh and it lives on as the predator laugh in other predator movies and games. I personally like the laugh and think it adds depth the predator as a character.
To point out several things (As I'm many are down in the comments), when the predator laughs, think a moment, this is your best friend's voice, your best friend who has been to hell and back witb you, now coming fron the same creature that killed him, contorted, no longer the jolly laughter of your friend, but the malicious imitation of him. That laugh will now haunt Dutch for the rest of his life😰...and btw, the one-liners are part of what makes the movie lovable in its 80-ness😎 (also how dare you mock one-liners😤)
I'm sure others said this, I tried to see but didn't find it, the Predator didn't hit Dutch's arm with the plasmacaster he hit the gun, he basically blind fired as he came around the tree, the shrapnel from the gun is what wounded Dutch's arm, but it happens so fast its easy to miss, grew up on this movie and it was years before i realized this.
We later learn in the second movie, or the comics that follow that, that Dutch actually suffers quite severe radiation poisoning from that predator's self-destruct device. As for the device itself, Yutja have a warrior culture, sort of like Klignons but on steroids, they live by a VERY STRICT honor code. Breaking any part of this code, usually means either exile, dishonor or death. And for a Yautja, there is nothing worse than dishonor, and being taken alive is a dishonor.
4:09 that because predator is about taking a stereotypical 80 Acton movie and then switching it to a horror, alien was just designed to be a horror.12:50 it hit the gun
I say the Predator laugh because he finally understood Hawkin's joke at the Guerrilla camp lol
You know what would be a really cool way to do a self-destruct?
A black-hole bomb so it sucks all the matter around into it.
Arnold is the greatest final girl and no one wants to admit it.
@@Alteori I do love how it sets up the main characters as über badasses and makes you think they are unstoppable before introducing this creature even more badass and powerful than them, it's almost like showing a scale of it's power
4:57 looks like a 1911 or a browning hi power judging by the slide and rear sight, but I could be wronf
I think one of the best lines of the movie, that never fails to break my heart, is after Blaine (Jesse Ventura) is killed, Dutch tells Mac (Bill Duke) "he was a good soldier," Mac responds saying "he was... my friend..." Bill Duke's delivery of the line was absolutely amazing, and I think is definitely not given enough credit for his performance in Predator.
yeah that was heartbreaking :(

Honestly, this movie and the sequel cemented the Predator as my favorite alien in the AVP universe. It’s just so unsettling when they’re hunting someone, turning the voices of their friends against them. You just know it’s gonna catch you, and you don’t know where it is. Terrifying.

I guess so lol. I guess this was a blend of action and horror or thriller
Alien was straight up horror so none of those there but Aliens had it's fair share of memorable quotes and one liners and Ripley even gets her own with; "Get away from her, you bitch!"

Thank you for saying this! In context, beginning is in perfect juxtaposition to the real premise of the film.

@@Waterbug1591 ok. I mean.. Nobody was asking, but since you're putting it out there, I really can't imagine anyone placing The Predator 2018 anywhere higher than the bottom most tier.

@@faded1to3black really anyone who does that is probably has the same braincells as the (very little amount of) morons who defend ssktjl (and there is no way I can see that)
I would just like to clarify 3 things,
1 the self destruct isn't to kill the enemy its too dispose of the body and technology of the predator
2 the reason the predator never saw dutch while he was preparing is because he was busy cleaning Billy's bones to give dutch a chance to rest and be at his peak
And 3 the reason its so silly and campy in the begining is to trick the audience into a false opinion of the movie so when it gets serious and the unkillable action heros start dying its more tense and impactful, other than that (and the jab at the laugh, i don't care what you say its awesome :p) the video is amazing as always.
Your humor and personality are so fun and I love the editing and memes you use.
You forgot to add the reason why the Predators mimic voices.
@@Fedora_Dragon oh yeah but that was smaller so I glossed over it
Billy's bones..
....Billy Bones.
Hah. I never considered that before, that's brilliant.
I agree that him saying "stick around" was dumb. Obviously he should have said, "knife to see you!"
"Have a knife day!"

It's also a great bait and switch, going in thinking it's gonna be another Commando or something
@@Tores444 One of the few cases of "subverting expectations" being done right.

Facts you didn't know about the movie:
Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid.
Landham said in an interview that, "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us."
It was 110 degrees in the shade while it was 42 degrees at night.
It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult.
It was a box office and critical success making $100 million dollars ($350 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget.

Not only that but the laugh itself was a mimic of Billy's laugh
Cowardly kills get skinned and opponents that died bravely get their skulls taken as trophies.
The reason why Duch didn't die when he got shot is because the blot hit the gun not him. You can see the gun get spilt in two in the sequence.
Ahhhhh ok.
@@mrloqqe1610 yeah i suck at that in not good with the long comments i make but that a little rude but understandable
Also the Alien can regulate the intensity or strength of the energy bolt it fires
That hand shake though, I mean who needs thanos when they are around
@@ZeeZan15y oh, really? I never noiced that, that would take some of the brunt for sure. They were all carrying some hefty metal guns for sure.
Yup 👍🏿
It was not just in the way. The Predator was aiming for it. That M-16 with M03 launcher was about the single most manliest thing in the movie. But Billy had the masterkey, and Blaine dear god I need a minigun for ahhhhh hmmmmm duck hunting.
That’s too big brained for this channel.
Fun facts:
3 actors ran for governor
1 is an iron Man writer and The Predator writer
Mandables was an idea by James Cameron
And the movie was going to have an alien bug lobster thing who was played by Jean Claude Van Damme but left because he didn't get to do martial arts, so they had to reshoot nearly entirely
Hope you look Enemy Mine or Small Soldiers
BTW, the edit with the manliest handshake just made it more manly
(I know it's Billy's laugh but still) lol
But then again if things were probably different in the 80s. what was scary back then is not necessarily scary now it comes to a lot of movies.
Definitely have to agree on your point about it being released in the 80s.
@@brothatscrazy3418 True that.
Fun fact : The clicking noise that the Yautja ( species of the Predator ) does during the film was recorded and made by Peter Cullen, voice actor for Optimus Prime in the original Transformers series, Transformers Prime, and all the live action Transformers Movies ( Even the depressingly bad ones. )
Which ones do you consider to be the depressingly bad ones? I'm generally curious. I'm not saying this to be a douche.

Actually, going through frame-by-frame, I just noticed that the projectile destroyed his gun, and either the projectile ricocheted off it, or the shrapnel from the gun hit his shoulder.
“If your try for my life you must want to loose your’s.” Love it. Put it on a shirt.
I love this movie because it changes genre part-way through. It starts as an action adventure, all the tropes and stereotypes included, then as they try to exfiltrate, it changes to a horror movie. Same thing Halo did, goes from a shoot-em-up blast the aliens game to a horror game.
First comment and like. Love your videos❤️
AvP was good but lacks BnG,AvPR had BnG but the acting was terrible!😒

12:55 it always annoys me when people do this and I know it's something you can miss easily but still. The predator did not shoot Dutch. The plasma blast hits his gun and a piece of it splinters off and impales him in the shoulder as shrapnel.
The reason the village assault scene doesn't fit the rest of the movie is that it was written, directed and filmed by the 2nd unit who had to take over after most of the primary filming team were ill due to filming on location in the jungle in extreme heat conditions.
Holy crap Alteori! 0:44 is simply the most amazing thing ive ever seen. I wish I could greet someone just like that!
Lol "making friends, one genocide at a time"
The guy who played Billy, they had to have a bodyguard on the set, not to protect him, but to protect the others from him.
I love this movie. First saw it on VHS and it was the first one where Arnold got his sass kicked. Iconic. So happy to have grown up in these times.
Thanks James :D I hope the other movies at least somewhat live up to this one

@@treyrex5987 For me, it felt cheesy and like the writers were aiming for fan service and really missed the mark. Even though some complain that in the first one it was just a bunch of testosterone-filled meat heads, they had characters. These characters were bad stereotypes. Adrian B was trying to do a Batman / Dutch combo. Great actor and really buffed up for the part, but he didn't feel fresh. The end fight ripped too many lines from the first one to even be called a homage. The Super predators looked silly. bigger is not always better. I have my own opinions that others don't agree with.

One of the greatest action thriller films ever. I love this movie.
I love this movie and the second one. I also enjoyed the AVP movies and that Predators movie that had multiple rogue predators on that game plannet
Young one...that was Jesse Ventura. "I ain't got time to bleed".

That is a Tokarev TT-33.
Okay, the exploding biceps at the start earned this like, I needed that laugh.
Real quickly explaining how Dutch survived being shot by the plasma caster. The shot hit his gun, not him.
Oh wow. 😱 That's kinda messed up
People who saw this when it came out will feel different about it compared to people watching it with today’s standards.
Hey "knock knock' is one of the one liners of all time
That edit you did with the manly handshake had me laughing way harder than I should have been.
I know you're young but I m glad you watched it and enjoyed it so thx!!!. cause one of the best creature movies ever ❤️
XD
@Alteori I'm so happy that you are reviewing the predator movies now 🙏🤩
Also the predator in this movie 🎥 by his species standards was a Noob. The other predators in the other movies are much more experienced hunters.
12:34 I can explain this part to you, the reason the plasma cannon didn't Peirce dutch is cause the predators have the option to raise and drop the intensity of it and the predator had chose dutch as his main prey, so it wanted a hand to hand fight to pass it's test cause the other predators were watching, this was shown in later movies
So the predators aren't killing for fun, their actually participate in there right of passage and are being watched and judged by their elders, which is why they don't attack unarmed or weak people
17:23 oh that wasn't for the enemy 😆, it was the just in case I get caught no one is getting my tech
Ah see this actually makes more sense
And it also it his weapon too as well
please dont stop doing these videos (they are very good)❤

Okay...was going thru the channel and the plethora of reviews i have to indulge...my gosh, your work is great. So, um, I think I love you. Yes, i'm going to tell my wife i love you and she is no longer the only one in the world for me. LOL.
Thanks for the great content. Um..."ahll be back."(insert spooky predator laughter).
I love everything about the movie, even Arnold's pun.
Predator 2 is such a fantastic movie. When people talk about inclusion in movies they kind of gloss over how diverse the 80’s action movies were.
4:09 that because predator is about taking a stereotypical 80 Acton movie and then switching it to a horror, alien was just designed to be a horror.12:50 it hit the gun
