I endlessly respect Pyranhas for being so loyal to themselves, no matter what the fasion dictates. They are doing what they like and they are good at it, so WE like it as well. Whatever the trends are , there will always be a buyer for a solid, balanced and truly atmospheric game.
It may not look like an ultra next-gen woobadooboobaaaaaam RPG like Witcher 3 (which I will love as the previous one), but as soon as this includes the atmosphere of the first Gothics - I'm on board! :-)
I like how most people who bash on this game don't even try it before commenting and on many ocassions turn people who might have otherwise enjoyed it from buying it. A game is good if someone enjoys it, if you don't enjoy it that is your personal taste. I for one enjoyed all Risen games, even if everyone was bashing them left and right They may not have been perfect, that is true, but what is important is that I enjoyed myself, even though I was rather skeptic about getting them because of all that negative opinion. So next time keep it to yourself.

The Gothic series originated from Gothic 1, ofcourse, which was released at about the same time as the first good ES: Morrowind. Therefore, their popularity stemmed from the same year. Bethesda was more successful with their games but they did not rip each other off, they merely watched each other and were always thinking of uniquely improving their own games, Bethesda was always bigger as a company (as they were in the US and PB are from Germany) but their "rival" team still stood strong and built their own unique games. Ofcourse, some of the elements of them must match, they go for the same medieval fantasy theme after all. Half of you people in the comments never even heard of Piranha Bytes and therefore stand on the "side" of Bethesda, AKA Skyrim and immediatelly accuse PB of "ripping them off". You have no right of saying anything if you didn't play atleast 90% of the games developed by each of the companies. In short, stop being so heavily judgemental when you have no concrete terms of backing your opinion up. This also goes for the people standing only on the side of the Gothic and Risen series, don't make the same mistakes, try out the ES games, they're incredibly well made for their time, almost equal in quality of the G and R series. Btw this looks awesome, can't wait to check it out! ;)

Risen 3 is a great game , the only thing I don't like about it is the protagonist's voice but you get used to it. Many people say Risen games are considerably inferior to Gothic games but I wonder if that's just the nostalgia talking.. I've played both Gothic and RIsen games these last years so I'm new to them. My favorite Gothic game is the first one , I liked the second one and the expansion but Gothic 3 sucked for me. Risen 1 was the most similar to Gothic games but it's also the least fun.Gothic 1 and 2 were very atmospheric, dark and mysterious and the protagonist sounded and looked very neutral I liked that a lot, but the new pirate Risen games are more fun... SO Gothic games are more interesting, Risen games more fun. If they make a Risen 4 or Gothic 5 they can perhaps ditch the pirate setting and go back to their roots...I would like it either way:)
Gothic 3 isn't bad with community patch applied, my favorite is Gothic 1 & 2 though, i have great memories, and I own all Risen games, still haven't played.
It's good that they acknowledge that Risen 1 is what they should aim for. It was actually a really good medieval fantasy RPG, it had a unique feeling of immersion, adventuring and exploration. There was a lot of mystery to the island the game takes place in, and this was the strongest point of the game. It's also great that the player starts off weak / insignificant or normal at first but can gradually and 'realistically' develop, unlike most RPGs where you basically start off as a powerful "chosen one". They should have shields in game and remove anything renaissance-like from Risen 2 like single hand swashbuckling and guns...
Im glad they are going back to Risen 1 roots. Piranha Bytes have awful habit of drastically changing of game's characteristics and lore with every sequel they make.
Can't wait to play this I enjoyed risen 1 & 2 alot , people that say these game are shit because of looks are really missing out RPGs like risen , Gothic , divinity 2 , dragons dogma and so on are the best because the experience you get from playing them stays with you I wish some people could just look past an RPG that has average graphics and see how much you can really get lost in the experience you get with these games :(

Combat is very tricky and very different from what we used to (i.e. Skyrim). Combat is so different that very first elementary enemies will totally own player and make player very frustrated. Game demands that player unlearn mechanics from other similar games in order to play this game properly - which is not easy feat.
I am deep in this game now! As a big fan of G2 and Risen1 all I can say is that this game is amazing! It starts bad with the same pirate crap theme from Risen 2, but than it really turns into a Gothic game. At one point I frgt what game I play and I felt just like playing the old Gothics. I have to admit, both risen 1 + 2 weren't easy to get into and the combat wasn't as crash hot as say, "The Witcher", but I thoroughly enjoyed both of them and will definitely play Risen 3 :)

Wow... this looks AMAZING. Would hate to go back to the previous installments after playing this, though. THEY BROUGHT PROPER MAGIC BACK!!! Lol, having only one eye seems to be the theme of Risen. I'm so glad they didn't pull the plug on this game, it's one of my favourites.
the original Risen game was an excellent experience if you are an older rpg gamer and enjoyed something different then the usual hack&slash lvling and grinding questing. Hope this one is like the first one, cos the second one was a bad detour...

even though it would be cool if all games were coming out in all platforms... since when do they make decent rpgs for phones? there's only a handfull of good games in android/ios out of thousands and most of them are ports from old games. the graphics would also have to be massively downgraded to maintain a decent framerate even on the best phones. the audience of these devices is different as well, i don't think many android/ios users are interested in playing hardcore/old school rpgs on their phones or any game in general that's not casual so i don't see why the devs would focus on that market, it would probably be a wasted effort. plus u would need a controller which isn't ideal for a handeld device, if u're gonna place it on a desk and be carrying around a huge controller, maybe u should just get a notebook/ultrabook that will also offer a better experience/more games/less issues and ur battery won't be drained the next time u'll wanna make a phone call :P

Not the best combat but it has a pretty good character development (some skills actually change gameplay mechanics drastically) and it definately has the best environment/level design and exploration in any rpg i've played and its huge. If you like these things it's the game for you. Be warned though the game can be really hard at start depending on your experience with rpgs, but it gets so much easier and rewarding through the end. 8/10

It's a freaking game not Rality v2.0. There are 8-bit games (awesome ones too) still coming out today. What are you going to say to those? Combat system- it's damn easy. If you have enough brains to tie your own shoe laces it should not take more than an hour to figure it all out. After that it's really easy. Games have become an art. And as it is with every kind of art, there's very few objective reviewers because everybody has a different tastes. The best way to measure a games's quality is by the size (or existence) of it's community. And the good PB games have one of the most die-hard community of fans.

enough with the pirate theme! It was ok in second game but in third again? You have to come up with better gameplay now like Risen 1. That was a masterpiece. I still keep coming back even though i beated like 5 times
i remember the days when i have nothing to play so i tried the first risen , i hate it so much coz character was easily to die but coz i had nothing to play i tried to love it till igot hooked to it and i discvered that it has good stories ... hope this is bettr than the first risen
For me, it looks like Gothic 2 with better graphics....which is actually nice cause I loved Gothic 2. Also Gothic 3 but only with the community patches...
After playing a couple of hours it's better than Risen 2 but the combat controls aren't that straight forward and direct like in Risen 1. Atmosphere is great, though. Reminds you of the old Gothic titles which are still unbeaten in that case, however. Risen 3 is not a very astonishing game but it's still fun.

people keep forgetting that piranha bytes isn't a AAA dev, they don't have the budget of a witcher 3 or dragon age, but it still looks beautiful.

only issue with this game is it takes a while to get going its worth a try if you got the time and patience to let the game fully develop

How close is it to Gothic 1?
"Boo f***ing hoo, the graphics are outdated and the combat sucks"... Graphics- if that's all you care about bugger off and watch an Animal Planet documentary in HD or smth. It's a freaking game not Rality v2.0. There are 8-bit games (awesome ones too) still coming out today. What are you going to say to those? Combat system- it's damn easy. If you have enough brains to tie your own shoe laces it should not take more than an hour to figure it all out. After that it's really easy.
Games have become an art. And as it is with every kind of art, there's very few objective reviewers because everybody has a different tastes. The best way to measure a games's quality is by the size (or existence) of it's community. And the good PB games have one of the most die-hard community of fans.

on the serious note,yes game has the flaws,bugs etc,but the exploration is really well done,and i dunno i like it really,in my words i would explain it like this,to me piranha bytes games have soul,like you can feel someone invested so much time(i know irony) in the game,but i think they are not that big studio,and are working with outdated engine imo,which they only upgraded visually.
Maybe that is the reason behind some things,and last but not least fuck Angry Joe,sry for this random shit :D

enough with the pirate theme! It was ok in second game but in third again? You have to come up with better gameplay now like Risen 1. That was a masterpiece. I still keep coming back even though i beated like 5 times

i remember the days when i have nothing to play so i tried the first risen , i hate it so much coz character was easily to die but coz i had nothing to play i tried to love it till igot hooked to it and i discvered that it has good stories ... hope this is bettr than the first risen
Unfortunately, IMO, it isn't. Nicer graphics, but weak story and the protagonist becomes way too powerful, too early in the game.
For me, it looks like Gothic 2 with better graphics....which is actually nice cause I loved Gothic 2. Also Gothic 3 but only with the community patches...

After playing a couple of hours it's better than Risen 2 but the combat controls aren't that straight forward and direct like in Risen 1. Atmosphere is great, though. Reminds you of the old Gothic titles which are still unbeaten in that case, however. Risen 3 is not a very astonishing game but it's still fun.
