Been replaying trough the Risen games for the last two months now, almost done with Risen 2 now, so I will replay Risen 3 very soon. Risen 1 is def. the best in the trilogy, 2nd being the worst and 3rd being like some sort of a mixed bag to me. It was def. more of Risen 2 than it was more of Risen 1, so I was def. not super happy with the game on it's original release. Does not help the fact the game reuses a lot of crap from the 2nd game, even locations. Both 2nd and 3rd game might not be top quality RPG's, but they offer a lot of fun to me personally and ofc they have that PB charm. Speaking of them, are they delaying a new game that was supposed to come out this year? I heard nothing from them the entire year, and back in december they said they will announce a new game this year and even release it. I know covid happened, but where are the updates? Anyway, great video as always friend from the neighbor country ;) (croatian here).
This is exactly how I feel about the whole series actually. Risen 1 came the closest to that "original gothic feel". Risen 2 was indeed the worst in the series. They changed the theme of the game quite substantially, but they did it unsuccessfully. I though that Risen 2 is going to be even better then Risen 1, but it is what it is. Like you said Risen 3 is somewhere in between all of this, that's why I described it as a mediocre game in general. It did manage to fix a lot of things that was wrong with Risen 2, and it's a fun game as long as you don't expect it to be on the same level as Risen 1 and old Gothic games. Pozz za tebe ^^
Not a huge fan of the pirate setting, but I dont mind it. Drastic change made no sense, but if only that was the only problem with the sequel lol. They could have just improved upon the first game that did many things right and overall was a good game, but they decided to start from scratch and do what they did xD
I love Pyranja Bytes and their Games. Gothic, Elex, Risen I played and liked them all. For the voice acting: You dont hear that often, but in Risen 3 the german voice acting is better than the english one.
I bought risen 2 and 3 on pre-order back in days. I was uber hyped for R2, and big dissapointed especially when we talk about combat. Clunky, not responsive, stuns on ur hero but ur enemy is not stuned when u hit them. I just wanted to asap end game and never turn on. I was sad as a fan of PB, and after how good Risen 1 were. My friend told me R3 looks good so i after watched trailer i gave them another credit, and i have to say this game is rll good. Maybe its not masterpiece like Gothic 1 or 2, but its combat is unique, smooth, and magic system as u mentioned has rll good animations wich makes u feel better in game. It feels rll sad that they didn't made those improvements into Elex. Anyway expect story(not bad, but boring), game is rll good, and i can give it solid 8/10. Every skill is usefull so it depends on ur playstyle wich way u go, not some meta wich is another good thing. Good revievs
"The game is really consistent with its quality of voice acting" did crack me up, Haha! And damn, now you made me want to play Risen 3. I basically skipped the whole risen series after I played a bit of Risen 1 and didn't like it. I then played Elex and liked it a lot (vibes of good old PrianhaBytes). But the stamina system there is not well implemented (balanced?) and making combat less fluid by forcing you to disengage and recover very often (especially at the start, where you can't perform more than like two or three attacks in a row).
@@click4gameplay I just rewatched it and you're right. But to my defense you kinda swallowed the "in" and pronounced the "c" much more. Now you stole the chuckle from me. D:
I’ve cleared the game three times already, once as the voodoo pirates and twice as the guardians. Why? The third time I was dead set on becoming a demon hunter, but holy shit their armor looks so bad I just couldn’t bear it.
@@Styles_Breez nope, but the first Risen gives me nostalgia. Everytime I play through the first game I just grit my teeth and play through the second and third game back to back :)
my favourite combat systems are still Gothic 2 and Risen 1 ... I get that they have to adjust to newer technology but I think I even like the combat system of Risen 2 or 3 more than Elex just because it feels more fluent and responsive
Ah, you dragged another skeleton from my rpg closet. I started the game several times and always somehow lost the steam to finnish it. Would be nice to see Risen 3 mechanics in Elex 2
Never played 2 or 3. 1 was actually pretty good. Don't think I ever completed it just remember the island and weather changes where alway good. See the storms coming in looked awesome for its day!
Risen 3 is a nice game by itself, but I only found the will to finish it after I installed the "Real Enhanced Edition" mod. It makes the game really challenging, the character progression really rewarding, like a good Piranha Bytes game should be. Besides that, it also improves the visuals and even makes Patty look like herself again. I mean, to each their own, but if you are a fan of past PB games, especially Gothic 1 and 2, try playing Risen 3 on Ultra difficulty, with this mod on, and disable the minimap and quest markers. There you have it, that old "Gothic feeling" all over again. Now if only they could make a mod to make the three factions really unique, instead of feeling like reskins of the same skill set... Oh well... Here is a link to the mod for the curious: www.nexusmods.com/risen3/mods/6
I remember trying this mod and it was tough, really tough, almost unfair I thought actually lol, enemies attacked all at once, which makes sense, but you barely have time to attack (due to the long swing animations) before getting attacked again. And followers were useless as well because they were not balanced with that agressiveness in mind and went down super quick (so no more distraction either lol). I also remember missing a lot of the skill checks in dialogue due to the lowered XP overall. Any recommendation for specific settings in the mod? (That you remember, since the commend is 1 year old hahaha).
Good video, I remember finishing the game many years ago and enjoying it but other than that I can't recall anything about the game, definitely gone play it again.
Coming from risen 2 i remember that i rly loved this game, these days i hate it not because it is that bad of a game but because pb just chose to try and fix the broken combat and gameplay of risen 2 rather then go back to the systems that worked in risen 1. A lot of the time i get the feeling that the guys at pb are trying to proofe that every change the make is a good one by sticking to it rather then making the best game they could.
The pirates and islands setting made me overlook this game as I did overlook Risen 2. Now that I know it's not much about pirates, I will surely try it. Thanks for the review :)
I finished Risen 2 and started Risen 3, just finished the main quest and now i'm hunting the few achievements that i'm missing, i need to say that i'm having a blast with Risen 3 I enjoyed a lot Risen 2 but Risen 3 it's my favorite, Risen 3 is a huge improvement from Risen 2 and the combat is so much better than the Risen 2, combat was my only problem with Risen 2.
Not a particular RPG lover here. Previous week i finished my first Piranha Bytes game, Gothic 2. It was actually my first RPG that i played it through the end. And i tried many of them. Now i am deciding which will be my next. Heard some negatives for G3, so wanted to get R1. Now that i watched your vid, R3 also seems rather interesting. 😀
@@Lucivius27 actualy idk if i will finish it. I got all 5 armour pieces but Eldric doesnt forge it for me. Althought the quest is complete in journal. Idk where i stucked and what to do now?
the thing that Piranha Bytes i really really really good at is creating a believable world... with all its characters, quest and the enviroment. you can find people or items behind and under every stone basically! so their biggest strengh is world building, the reast is more like "meeeeeh" but i love them, played the shit out of Gothic 1 and 2 back in the days!
Risen 3 is still my fav after Gothic 3. Interestingly enough I didn't really like R2 that much, and really liked R1. Risen 3 holds up and is totally worth playing, not only for hardcore RPG fans.
If you know history risen 1 was not full medieval it was 1600 era when pirates started to get a bit of infamy, the buildings are early colonial spain or scicillian arquitecture and lastly powder firearms did exist already but they were not used because they were very unreliable, so they still used armors and crossbows and swords. So my point is; it wasn't out of nowhere with pirates. P.s forgot that the ruins in risen 1 were heavily inspired by South American carrinbean arquitecture like taino, mayan, aztec and inca.
I still find it baffling how all of the stuff they did right in Risen 1 they just abandoned for the sequels. It still has the best UI, art style, world, really, everything of their post-Gothic games. All they had to do was copy that ad nauseam, but nope. The small details are really inexplicable, comparing Risen 1's UI & inventory & character system to Risen 3. Just... why. Why, over and over again.
I can't even play Risen 3... got it on my PS pro and after about 30 hours gameplay, the game bugged out and corrupted my save so i tried it on my other playstation and made sure to turn the autosave off so i can make sure not to save whilst its bugging out, same thing happened again though
Just started risen 3 in 2021, was a huge fan of first hated 2nd. But this one i think it has its own charm, janky as hell but it adds to the game some how. Its got some really ambitious machanics, spells and use of some items are unique. So far im impressed. Its like a janky fable thats some how addictive. Lol
Short answer for the title, just get AC. Black Flag if you want real pirates with much more realistic naval battles. And for a similar price today the best deal is quite obvious.
@@czapla1024 My comment was about playing a pirate theme game, you play Edward as you would Spiderman in a Spiderman game, your character is a full pledge pirate from the start, as for role playing, building a character is my favorite thing to do but what good is it if the rest of the game is bad? If you want to be a pirate play the best pirate game, that's all. Strictly speaking role playing games, it's very easy to find something better than Risen 3.
@@piratecat5113 The rest of what game is bad? Name a better: - pirate-themed RPG or - semi-open-world exploration-heavy action RPG (other than Gothic or Risen) than Risen 3. Also, if you claim that AC 4 is the only pirate game ever made worth playing I'd hope you played all of Sid Meier's Pirates!, Port Royale, Monkey Island, Claw, Pillars of Eternity 2 and Raven's Cry. Otherwise your opinion would be worthless... but that can't be right, you are a sensible and experienced gamer, right?
@@czapla1024 I feel we will end up in a endless and fruitless debate about RPGs and thematic stuff, we all have our favorite games don't we? Black Flag isn't the only pirate theme game on the ps3 but it's the best one, try as you will you'll never change my mind. Your role playing obsession is irrelevant against my point. The games you named are not bad choices, but not my first ones that's all, besides, my first comment was inspired by Risen 3 namely the title of this video, between these two I know where my money would go if I had to buy again.. Even the naval battles in AC 3 are more fun :) Fun, that's my number one argument.
@@piratecat5113 The argument is not about my or your individual tastes, it's about you telling people not to bother to even check the game out despite it being completely different genre than Black Flag. You completely undermine others' preferences, to the point where you don't need to know anything about a game to place it on "not bad but worse than AC 4" shelf (I can tell because Raven's Cry was such a flop it was delisted from digital markets). There are people for whom the most fun they can have is role-playing a character (it's not just "my obsession", my particular preferences are irrelevant in this argument), for others interacting with friends, for others yet - building cities. They don't need you saying over and over that bLaCk fLaG iS mOrE fUn because for them it's simply not the case. And you should either respect that or take a break from the Internet
I finished all risen games and elex. If you play risen 3 use Risen 3 Real Enhanced Edition for better graphics. Never played gothic series because of lack of controller support. (play on couch)
@Jonathan Soko yes I realized that on my first unfinished run with warrior build. So my 2nd was mage and had fun blasting all those pesky lizards with my very good skeleton summon named Fred. It was a good 13 hour of fun.
To be honest, RISEN 3 never really grabbed my attention. Strangely enough, I enjoyed RISEN 2, it was a good break from RISEN 1 and focused much more on Narrative and skill-based combat (sometimes for the worse). I will be looking forward to what PB has in store next.
Personally my problem with Risen 2 and Risen 3 is the pirate theme. It seems PB tried to mix pirate theme with german - Ruhr area society/mentality. And it just feels too cartoonish because of it. What i mean is pirates in these games are much nicer probably than your neightbours. In reality pirates are people who robbing/killing others to survive. You can also feel this "cartoonish" style of desing in characters and dialogs. I just cant take these games seriously even if they are not bad at all.
I’ve always had a interest in this game. I have quite a few games in my backlog. It looks like my type of game though! I really like the power fantasy, whether medieval or Sci-Fi games. Maybe time to give it a try.
I see that you're playing using a controller. How is combat on mouse and keyboard? I never, ever use a controller (which leaves me out of racing games), so I'm curious if combat translates well to mouse and keyboard?
I do not know why people shit-talk Risen2 so much. I personally preferred risen2 over 1 and 3. 3 was great, but damn, the maps were just too huge, couldn't find my way around. The story was also inferior to Risen2 in my opinion. I really like the pirate theme of risen2, much more than the (however we want to call the) risen1 theme
Although the gameplay and open world is kinda worse in Risen 2 than it is in Risen 1, i definitely prefer R2's story. Its well paced, Nicely structured and has some awesome, emotional and surprising moments in it. :) I never really got warm with Risen 3 because of its super weird and frustrating combat system. Also imo the story is very weird with its forced karma system and not-so-surprising main quest. The Open world is very cool though and the side quests were fun.
I like the Pirate Setting and Risen 3 is a game I enjoy playing. Sure.. it has its flaws, but these flaws are not a gamebreaker for me, since I managed to learn the Mechanics and some things I can exploit. I love the Demon Hunters and the Voodoo Tribe of Kila! The Guardians are... ok, but nothing special in my oppinion. When I play as a Demon Hunter, I use the Voodoo spellscrolls and sometimes the Guardians' and when I play as a Voodoo Pirates, then the consumable Runes of the Demon Hunters are real lifesavers :)
I really can't make myself get into the pirate theme. Even meeting pirates in gothic took a few points away from the game in my eyes but playing the whole game as one... Rough.
I was enjoying the game but then the known bug with the ship cutscene happened and i couldnt get the game to load up. New saves didnt help game would not progress.
I played it in 2015 and hated it so much... I love the first Risen. Finished the second one but absolutely hated the pirate theme. The 3rd still has way to many of this pirate theme for my taste.
I loved 1 but couldn't progress. Couldn't find something in chapter 2. I skipped 2 because of the pirate theme. 3 I didn't know had the pirate them till I downloaded it on PSnow. Such a shame. Not sure if I want to play it.
lets say you don't want to finish the game in all factions what faction do u recommend for the first run and maybe only not sure but I'm enjoying it tho
i started by playing Risen 3 and really enjoyed it, therefor i played Risen 2 after it ... but i still not decided about Risen 1 although i heard it's the best of the three, Risen 1 graphics and animations looks really outdated (wish if they reworked it, at least with Risen 3 engine) ... about Pirate theme i actually like it ...
Damn defiantly not buying then. It's on sale for like $4 but I keep running into people who say that the game crashes and corrupts after like 30 hrs on ps4.

It was def. more of Risen 2 than it was more of Risen 1, so I was def. not super happy with the game on it's original release.
I'm also 100% with you
Been using Opera since like 2006-2008 when not that many people knew about it. Never stopped using it since.
Never played Risen 3. After watching this...I'm curious!
Risen 3 - Enhanced Edition, it’s on sale right now for around $5 on the PS4.
What I always liked about piranha's games is that the exploration feels very rewarding.
I love Pyranja Bytes and their Games. Gothic, Elex, Risen I played and liked them all.
For the voice acting: You dont hear that often, but in Risen 3 the german voice acting is better than the english one.
Yea it's always like that in their games, because german is their primary language obviously.
PB games are way better to play in german. (if u understand it)
@@click4gameplay Yeah I know I am german too.^^ Ruhrpott-Fantasy^^
Pretty sure I said "inconsistent".
It's that fun? I just tried it on psnow & thought it was good enough to d/l, but wasn't sold on the early-game combat.
Disable auto focus and use your jet pack to dodge enemy blows when you are out of stamina. Then, the Elex combat system works perfectly.
Thus is what did it for me. I couldn't do the pirate theme. Loved G 3 but gave up after risen 1 for elder scrolls.
Ah, you dragged another skeleton from my rpg closet. I started the game several times and always somehow lost the steam to finnish it. Would be nice to see Risen 3 mechanics in Elex 2
I just bought it an hour ago. Will check it out when I can! Thank you for the review.
My favorite PB games :
1 Gothic
2 ELEX
3 Risen 3
What do you guys think of my top 3 ?
It should be
1. Gothic 2
2. Gothic
3. Risen
4. Elex
5. Risen 3
6. Gothic 3
7. Risen 2
gothic 2 was the best for me
then cothic 1
then elex
but in german the games are way way better then in English
@@TheKingofbrooklin what about NotR ? Or do you prefer Vanilla G2 ?
@Rostek Maytba thanks!
@@SaucisseMerguez I think Gothic 2 counts as both.
I think I'll give this game a chance again, last time I played and couldn't keep up was back in 2018
Good video, I remember finishing the game many years ago and enjoying it but other than that I can't recall anything about the game, definitely gone play it again.
I have finished Risen 1 some time ago, now playing Risen 2, the first one is really good. Soon i will get to Risen 3.
Just finished Risen 1 today. I had fun since I'm playing on easy and just enjoy the story. The protagonist is surely likeable than this guy in 3.
@@Lucivius27 i am half through the game (risen 1), just finished chapter 2
@@gigidasha4475 Have fun and hope you don't have that jump ledge glitch. Cause you will be doing it a lot on last chapter.
@@Lucivius27 actualy idk if i will finish it. I got all 5 armour pieces but Eldric doesnt forge it for me. Althought the quest is complete in journal. Idk where i stucked and what to do now?
dasha Maybe its a bug. Try to attack him and then use the joke spell. Maybe it will refresh him or something.
the thing that Piranha Bytes i really really really good at is creating a believable world...
with all its characters, quest and the enviroment. you can find people or items behind and under every stone basically!
so their biggest strengh is world building, the reast is more like "meeeeeh"
but i love them, played the shit out of Gothic 1 and 2 back in the days!
Risen 3 is still my fav after Gothic 3. Interestingly enough I didn't really like R2 that much, and really liked R1. Risen 3 holds up and is totally worth playing, not only for hardcore RPG fans.
This is for free with PlayStation Now in case anyone is thinking of trying it out.
risen 3 was actually my first pb game lmao, it's pretty good, specially the combat.
I like Risen 3 it was my first RPG
If you know history risen 1 was not full medieval it was 1600 era when pirates started to get a bit of infamy, the buildings are early colonial spain or scicillian arquitecture and lastly powder firearms did exist already but they were not used because they were very unreliable, so they still used armors and crossbows and swords. So my point is; it wasn't out of nowhere with pirates. P.s forgot that the ruins in risen 1 were heavily inspired by South American carrinbean arquitecture like taino, mayan, aztec and inca.
You are correct.
Just... why. Why, over and over again.
it's currently 75% off on the playstation store which makes it £3.99, an absolute steal.
This game looks really cool. I can’t believe I never played it.
I bought it for 4€ on eneba and I must say I'm having fun with it.
It's not the best but it's an enjoyable experience.
I play risen 3 every year. After the witcher 3 this game is the best of all time , piranha bytes realized the best games I think
I can't even play Risen 3... got it on my PS pro and after about 30 hours gameplay, the game bugged out and corrupted my save so i tried it on my other playstation and made sure to turn the autosave off so i can make sure not to save whilst its bugging out, same thing happened again though
Damn I feel invested with the original character. Why they have to change? I will still play this eventually.
Greer review. It’s $3.99 right now and was thinking of getting it as a what the heck kind of purchase.
Lol
Are you fond of RPG's and can you understand the slightly awkward humor of German / Central Europe then it is a good one
Short answer for the title, just get AC. Black Flag if you want real pirates with much more realistic naval battles. And for a similar price today the best deal is quite obvious.
How is Assassin's Creed supposed to satisfy one's need for role-playing?
@@czapla1024 My comment was about playing a pirate theme game, you play Edward as you would Spiderman in a Spiderman game, your character is a full pledge pirate from the start, as for role playing, building a character is my favorite thing to do but what good is it if the rest of the game is bad?
If you want to be a pirate play the best pirate game, that's all.
Strictly speaking role playing games, it's very easy to find something better than Risen 3.
@@piratecat5113 The rest of what game is bad? Name a better:
- pirate-themed RPG or
- semi-open-world exploration-heavy action RPG (other than Gothic or Risen)
than Risen 3.
Even the naval battles in AC 3 are more fun :)
Fun, that's my number one argument.
I actually pre ordered this when it came out and loved it, was really into the risen series.
I finished all risen games and elex. If you play risen 3 use Risen 3 Real Enhanced Edition for better graphics. Never played gothic series because of lack of controller support. (play on couch)
Risen 3 real enhanced edition mod is a must, changes combat,no more one mob at time waiting in a cue to fight you
REE is a mess and not worth even checking out.
Looks like an early version of greed fall with that spell slinging and those four legged creatures remind me so much of the first boss in greed fall.
That is why I played it on easy and having a lot of fun. I will play 2 and 3 eventually.
@Jonathan Soko yes I realized that on my first unfinished run with warrior build. So my 2nd was mage and had fun blasting all those pesky lizards with my very good skeleton summon named Fred. It was a good 13 hour of fun.
Good review. I just finished Arcania and I was recommended Risen 3.
I picked it up on a psn sale in 2018 or 19 was surprisingly good.
3:20 Nope, it is not subjective.
Sounds like its set up like Gothic but the whole pirate theme just puts me off
I love the risen trilogy!😊 it's my favorite rpg trilogy since ps1,ps2 era rpgs
I do not know why people shit-talk Risen2 so much. I personally preferred risen2 over 1 and 3. 3 was great, but damn, the maps were just too huge, couldn't find my way around. The story was also inferior to Risen2 in my opinion. I really like the pirate theme of risen2, much more than the (however we want to call the) risen1 theme
Although the gameplay and open world is kinda worse in Risen 2 than it is in Risen 1, i definitely prefer R2's story. Its well paced, Nicely structured and has some awesome, emotional and surprising moments in it. :)
I never really got warm with Risen 3 because of its super weird and frustrating combat system.
Took you up on that drink every time you hear quests. About dead… :)
lets say you don't want to finish the game in all factions what faction do u recommend for the first run and maybe only not sure but I'm enjoying it tho
I started this game for the first time arround 2017, never got too much into it though
Has to be better than "Gothic 4," which had nothing in common with Gothic besides the name.
The Risen 3 mainchar has a good Voiceactor in German
I'd be curious to know your overall opinion of this vs. Elex. Which would you say you preferred as a whole package?
Between Elex and Risen 3? Elex without a doubt. Between Risen 1 and Elex? Risen 1 without a doubt. It's not that simple though. 😅
i started by playing Risen 3 and really enjoyed it, therefor i played Risen 2 after it ... but i still not decided about Risen 1 although i heard it's the best of the three, Risen 1 graphics and animations looks really outdated (wish if they reworked it, at least with Risen 3 engine) ... about Pirate theme i actually like it ...
I can't believe they fcked it up in Elex after this.
Funs of "Gothic/Arcania" (even "TES") series, shouldn't miss the Risen series. Risen 3 didn't disappoint either. i'm talking pc versions.
I just finished risen 3, i loved it, but i'm according to you about the most of the issues
