    Man refits a small boat to live aboard
    Man buys larger boat
    Man begins a refit of larger boat
    Man uncovers more issues and the refit becomes a "somewhat extensive" refit
    Man rebuilds the entire boat, except for ONE DOOR FRAME
    Happy Birthday, Mads!

    Happy birthday mads! 40 is not so bad actually it's a really good time in your life. You have it better than 99% of other 40 year olds. You have a direction in your life, you have a loved one to share it with, and a plan. So enjoy 40. I would tell you that it's all downhill from there but you already know that. I would also tell you that it goes fast but it just does what it does. As far as Athena she's coming along fantastic. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we're all proud of the work that you do and the effort that you put into it. And while I'll miss the building phase once you move off that I'm looking forward to the cruising phase as well.

    One thought regarding the chain locker.
    Once sanded and painted, install up to 2” (50 mm) rigid foam insulation on the chain locker side of the forward bulkhead. This way, heat or cold from the chain locker won’t transfer to the berthing area.
    Happy Belated Birthday, Mads!

      @bobadam7021 3 роки тому +12

      Another thought, a sacrificial piece of teak or other rot resistant grating on the bottom of said locker. That way water passes through to be pumped over, and the wear from hundreds of feet of chain coming and going only wears out the wood and not the glass.

    • @danielbuckner2167
      @danielbuckner2167 3 роки тому +3

      @@bobadam7021 It will wear faster but i still like that to keep the chain from laying on a surface that might not fully dry.

      I would add, you can get grated snap-together tiles typically used for garage flooring or a rubber grated mat that allows some air circulation & noise deadening. It's all in the details.

    • @manfredschmalbach9023
      @manfredschmalbach9023 3 роки тому

      @@AustinBoil Those rubber gratings are a good solution once You found a way to have it keeping its place and not ripping of the hull. We once glued some with Sikaflex - did not what it was supposed to do. So we changed back to cheap meranti stripes again. Chain lockers are maintenance points on a boat laying on different roadsteads a lot. People tend to forget that.

    Happy birthday Mads. I know I have lifted my standards when going DIY because of you so your excellent work ethic spreads across the world and I know here in Australia you are treated with high praise. Watching the refit of Free Range Sailing and then reading their comments section lots of people say “well, Mads would have done it this way..”. They went for fully soft shackles and dyneema and saved a really large amount of weight up top with no metal so I must go back to your new rigging and compare philosophies.

    I also have an entry to the chain locker that to quote you is "too darn small". Why are these opening always too darn small? In the base of my chain locker I have a drain, goes into a dedicate little box with a pump in it, so I can squirt down the chain with fresh water when the opportunity presents itself. As if you don't have enough on your plate. LOL.

    Mads, have you considered putting in sloped ribbed false bottom in the chain locker with screen covered holes to allow the water to drop into the bottom of the chain locker. With a pump emptying the compartment under the false bottom, your anchor rode will dry faster and not be sitting in salt water. A ribbed false bottom will not removing much room in the chain locker and can access to both parts of the compartment thru the access panel.

    A suggestion. Any of those dark areas where you will have to access for maintenance or repair at some point I suggest installing LED light strips. They take up virtually no space & are a wonderful thing to have illuminate those areas so you don't have to drag a flashlight or headlamp around. If you want to avoid wiring them in, battery powered ones work fine as well. There are all kinds of styles for under cupboard kitchen lighting to choose from as a source..

      Yeah, that's an excellent suggestion, and extend it to various nooks where food, tools and other items are stored. I have (tho, in a home setting with battery chargers) very good experience with the Eufy Lumi. Motion controlled, efficient, small and warm nice light in two levels. Closets, drawers, the tool shed, and so on

    When we cut holes in metal boats, we add on a compensation plate to reinforce the area around the hole. And compensate for the removed metal.

      Interesting :) That's not something that's common aboard fiberglass boats :)
