This was so enlightening as to some of the downright bizarre design choices going on at this company lately. “why are there no vents on the fender?" He replies, “we didnt need one - this car is all about being true. What we dont need we dont put on”.
Then, next question: “Inner edge integrated into the headlight cluster, does the inner edge serve any functional purpose?” He replies “No”. Lol.

The car might be true but his answers aren't. The reason you don't see the classic M design queue is cost cutting. What's "true" about needing a massive nonfunctional black vent with a reflector slapped into it?

What I heard: This box is boxy and if you look here we have boxes, and these boxes are fun. The lines and boxes make muscles. Another shape I like are squares, which are like flat boxes. This is all very iconic, and fun. Boxy muscles are geometric. Fun, playful and expressive is done with boxes. I love boxes and playing with boxes.

This car would grow on people more favorably than g80/g82 m car as the time goes on. At least the horizontal / rectangular elements make this car wider and lower whereas the vertical front end of g80 and g82 makes the car feel taller and narrower than what it is. Last thing you want from a sports sedan is to make the car look narrower and taller than what it is. The key proportion, stance, and overall presence of this car is well done. It still is teutonic or bmw, particularly the execution of rear quarter panel, d pillar rear deck. It still is a M car, short front overhang, wheels to the corners, long dash to axle, a proper trunk deck thus a traditional coupe profile. People tends to focus and gravitate towards graphics and little details which can improve I agree. But they didn’t deviate far from previous M2 unlike G82 M4 particularly.

This car just went back to what a BMW front looked like with small kidney grills and normal headlights. To each his own I like that they dealt away with the huge grills.

This car looks like a caricature. From different angles it looks like a combination of different designs. I love the large haunches reminiscent of the E30 M3, but the front/rear just ruin it. Parts look nice/aggressive, but as an overall package it doesn't flow well for some reason.

Just way too overdone piecewise, but misses the entire point of essential design. Those rectangular blocks seemed to have taken a page out of Minecraft/Roblox/Legoland. There is no cohesiveness in the overall presentation. BMW design studio seems to be really lost lately; the G80/82, the XM, and now this. See how that front corner PDC sensor just seem to hang off the corner of that gaping square intake? Too much "afterthoughts" splattered all over the car.

The front of the M240i looks much better. The M2 looks weird. Those black corner headlight elements are blah! And that tons of black at bottom of front bumper and lack of grill outline combined with it being black makes it even more weird looking.

I liked F87 already a lot. It's not easy to have a successor of already great looking car, but this one have that "something" which sets it apart in kinda good way. One of those card you don't like immediately, but once grown on you it never gets boring.

Very strange rear of the car the sharp edges it reminds me of my Z4 M I owned sharp edges and remember that was a Chris Bangel design. And now his cars that he designed are very sought after so go figure , this car will be sought after in the future I say buy one

As far as I can tell from the public reaction as well as my own is that this is a design fail, no car especially an M car should be met with "shoe box on wheels, hideous, why!!!" and comments of that nature.
This thing looks like Jose used to work at hyundai/kia and Subaru but forgot to disconnect and step into the "BMW realm". Not sure how long Jose (and team) have been designing BMW vehicles but I'm going to guess that he's been there for a few years now judging by what's happened to BMW design.....
I'm sure it will grow on people, the front end anyway. I wish manufacturers listened to the end user and didn't just try make something which they like assuming everyone else will, no doubt this is some backwards underwhelming tactic to then release the facelift which will be marginally better in design but will be radically better in comparison.
