for all you haters out there. this guy is a mr. olympia contender. i personally met the guy in texas. he does do full reps and pause reps with 405 like butter. he is super strong. he training style works for him. just saying. all around nice guy also.
You can see from comments that achieving something matters. If you're just a common guy and posted your training like what Johnnie did, people will swarm comments with hates, advices, suggestions, etc. But this is Johnnie Jackson, one of the greatest bodybuilders so it's understandable people suddenly support, protect, agree, etc even if his form has flaws.
yeah range of motion is not LA FITNESS OR PLANET FITNESS CERTIFIED.... :-\ but hey cant hate on a man that looks like this and compete profesionally.....hell i bet you or i couldnt do it!!!
so many people commenting on range of motion but they are forgetting JJ is also worlds strongest bodybuilder... everything he does has a purpose. full range of motion and partials have their place in every well rounded bodybuilders routine
They seem to go to failure in almost every set, when they fail usually they continue with half reps ,drop sets and stuff. That way they get exhausted from the first sets ,and the volume of excercises per bodypart is also bigger. These may be some reasons
The reason for him doing what some would consider partial reps is to keep the tension on his chest. The upper part of presses involves mainly triceps instead of chest. Ronnie trains the same way and so does Jay and they all three have incredible chest development.
This chest workout was done about 5 weeks before the NY pro this year(the biggest bodybuilding contest behind the Olympia and Arnold) and he placed second!! I think he knows what he is doing when he is working out but I'm sure he appreciate the youtube commentors telling him about form.
They like to train this way and it works ,so?People must undertand that they are pros ,if the way they do it did not activate the right muscles ,they would feel it.Beginner's bad form is not the same with Jackson's bad form.Ronnie Coleman did not have good form for god's sake!
No he just said you have to go all the way up to activate your triceps. Not going all the way up keeps tension on your chest. The proper way to do it is going all the way up.
He may not be using good form, but most power lifters don't, but I'm fairly sure he is doing a Hell of a lot more then me or the next guy could do that's for damn sure. I respect him for this video and the power he displays. Stop hating and appreciate it for what it is - powerlifting (not synchronized swimming )
I already looked up the RESEARCH on "range of motion." The researchers found out full range of motion results in more strength and muscle mass gains than short-range. Look up the research when you can.
is the famous metroflex gym of Arlington, Texas. the owner is Brian Dobson..is the gym of Ronnie Coleman (see "cost of redemption" or others ronnie's clips) and Branch Warren
There's never been a better example of the importance of genetics than Branch and Johnnie's training is concerned. Johnny has the monster back Branch lacks, and Branch has leg development Jackson could only dream of, yet both men follow roughly the same routines and probably take similar drugs on a weekly basis. That said, I have seen Johnny train in a much more strict style than he did here, primarily in accessory pressing moves.
In this video, they were doing drop sets which don't really require heavy weight. But, having said that, they were still doing a pretty good bit. The range of motion thing is really overblown. Yes, it has it's place but the short reps Johnnie is doing has a place too. Stopping just short of lockout on the concentric portion of the lift puts constant tension on the target muscles. It really makes it much harder in my humble opinion. Whatever Johnny is doing must be working. He's a beast!
When you strong locking out all the time wears the joints down. The "regular people" here who complain he isnt locking can do so with the lighter weights they use. Benching with 135 vs 315 or more is as similar as driving a honda vs Lambo.
Form isn't what's most important it's all about contracting the muscle. Johnny and branch have learned to move weights like that but still make good contractions
Dudes rankin on Johnnie for his form, chill. Your sitting at home on your computer, while this guy is BUSTING HIS ASS at the gym. At least he even qualifies for the Olympia, that in itself it an extreme honor
Its not going all the way up with the bar that matters...its going all the way down. Going all the way down helps keep flexibility, and once u get to the mid point of a chest press it switches to more delts and tris.
Yes what you suggested is what I had decided to do: both full reps and partial reps. Thanks. And about the joins - they hurt as we age??? So if I lift weights for 10 years you mean I'll experience horrible joints pain when I'm old? I'm 21.
Muscle repair with the use of comon protein suplements does lower the amount of calcium on your body, and that weak the bones, that is also is easly corrected with correct meals. Train by it self does not anything to the bone.
I love johnnie Jackson... really go hard trainer like branch warren... only thing he's lacking is legs... and he trains with the guy with the best legs in the business branch... so hopefully he gets there... both are animals...
During presses its key to not lock out -_- if you lift weights you would know that not locking out keeps the tension on the primary muscle group in this case the chest. I guarantee you if you bench 225 10 reps with lock out reps, you would only get 5 or 6 if you kept the tension on the chest. In order to build mass which is what a press is usually used for its best to keep the weight in motion. Once you lockout in the bench press you move the tension to the triceps and not the chest...
So you're telling me, I as a beginner would benefit more from doing the bench press with full range of motion. But don't you think it would be better for my confidence to isolate the chest in order to build a bit of muscle chest in order to develop a bit of confidence? I already built a bit of bicep peaks from isolating the biceps at home. I own a bench press by the way. Hey, can I ask you for your advice on something else? For the past five days in a row I worked I did 5 different biceps exerci
well everyone has different composition of muscle fibers (ratio of fast to slow twitch). So one program of sets and reps might not work for some people.
clearly implied that with age ---------> joints pain, which is true, but it can be significantly reduced if we take proper precautions now that we are young.
Thanks for the advice. I'll follow your recommendation: I'll stick to full range of motion bench press, and at the end I'll isolate the pecs like Jackon and Coleman do. And about my biceps, I know what's wrong with me: my forearms are exvessively weak, so whenever I do any biceps exercises, my forearms do 95% of the work. I can already feel my forearms have gotten stronger and they hurt. I'm sure once my forearms get stronger they'll stop doing all the work and my biceps will do it instead! thnx
OH MY GOD - are you kidding me? I only started going to the GYM less than a week ago and I have seen several men do the bench press like this (not all the way up), so I thought they were cheating... but are you sure this is how it has to be? Wow! Thanks for letting me know!
It's a different type of method they using. It's not concerned with full range of motion. It's concerned with keeping constant tention on the muscle. Even Ronnie Coleman training style was similar. Just search for Ronnie Coleman - Chest Workout where is wearing all red.
Admittedly, I use full range of motion. However, u can't say he doesn't know what he is doing. He has got one of the biggest badsass chests I've seen! Quite impressive actually!! ;)
jus watched the whole series of "train with kai" epic btw... this looks hilarious in comparison....obviously as effective but so polarised in their approach...damn i love bbing
HELP!! I'm 21, 130lbs, beginner level. Today is the 4th day in a row I train my biceps... and they never hurt. I did E-Z standing bar curls, cable bicep curls, and used two other bicep machines: total workout time ~50 minutes. PROBLEM: my FOREARMS always do most of the work! My forearms are extremely weak btw. Why do my forearms do all the work?
I respectfully disagree, I think Kai Greene has just the same amount of mass as JC on legs, but Kai has greater separation of the muscles and more detail. What are your thoughts?
When a bodybuilder is that massive they risk a chance of tearing a muscle through a full range of motion. So if you keep continuous tension on the muscle being worked it is much safer and will build good muscle. It is easy to tear a muscle especially when you are chemically enhanced.
the genetics maybe similar, but the body type is not the same across all humans. assuming johnnie is like most bodybuilders, he is a mesomorph, meaning that his body is athletically better (stronger[not considering steriods if taken], cardiowise). the other 2 body types are ecto and endos. ecto = tall ; endo= round. it harder for endos to train the same as mesos because they do not have some physical boundries then mesos. For most ectos its hard for them to pack on extra weight.
1) I MUST ask you.- has it been SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN that weight lifting exaggerates joints pain when we are old? My mother is a nurse and she takes care of a 96 year old lady and that lady has no joints pain (no osteoporosis and/or arthritis). I know that as long as I get my 1,000mg of calcium a day (or more) until age 50 and at 50+ 1,200mg - 1,500mg calcium a day, and if I protect my fingers and knees and other bones from the cold, then my chances of joints pain will be significantly lower.
Every idiot with a 42 inch chest and 13.5 inch arms wants to be the form police. He's training chest, not the bench press for powerlifting. When he trains for powerlifting his form is a lot different.
yeah, your so right....but you forgot to mention your olympia placing? must be higher than 13th i would think cuz you use "better form" than jonnie jackson
everybody who follows bodybuilding knows that johnnie jackson has prob one of the best upper bodies in the sport. its always been his legs that lack the development. so form on his chest movements has nothing to do with it
exercises, but the HUGE problem is... my forearms do all the work. My forearms get a huge pump, they get really hard and full of blood... but my biceps don't! How is it possible for five different bicep exercises (including machines) to only work out my forearms?!!! My forearms are excessively weak, so this has to be the reason right? My forearms have definitely gotten stronger. I know something is wrong. It can't be form because I have used bicep machines too, so idk...what's wrong with me?
I love this gym environment. Good music and you can throw shit down everywhere because it already is all over the damn place.
everybody on youtube is an expert when it comes to lifting and fighting
for all you haters out there. this guy is a mr. olympia contender. i personally met the guy in texas. he does do full reps and pause reps with 405 like butter. he is super strong. he training style works for him. just saying. all around nice guy also.
never seen a video where he does 405 for reps.
he has a powerlifting background, he benchedwell over 500
so shut the fk up

I have been waiting ages for a new Johnnie video to pop up
His hams and calves are his weaknesses, his quads are great.
that's where "Different things work for different people, regardless of research." comes into play
yeah range of motion is not LA FITNESS OR PLANET FITNESS CERTIFIED.... :-\ but hey cant hate on a man that looks like this and compete profesionally.....hell i bet you or i couldnt do it!!!

The music is fucking awesome!!!
so many people commenting on range of motion but they are forgetting JJ is also worlds strongest bodybuilder... everything he does has a purpose. full range of motion and partials have their place in every well rounded bodybuilders routine
I also just learned that getting plenty of calcium does NOT prevent osteoporosis, but in conjuction with resistance training it can!
They seem to go to failure in almost every set, when they fail usually they continue with half reps ,drop sets and stuff. That way they get exhausted from the first sets ,and the volume of excercises per bodypart is also bigger. These may be some reasons
That's precisely the point.
O.K. I just watched a video of Jay Cutler doing his BICEPS routine and I just learned how to train my biceps correctly.
Slayer in every gym now!
The reason for him doing what some would consider partial reps is to keep the tension on his chest. The upper part of presses involves mainly triceps instead of chest. Ronnie trains the same way and so does Jay and they all three have incredible chest development.

Bodybuilding isn`t about how much you can lift, it is not Weightlifting
Johnnie has a great upper body. It's his balance between his legs and his upper body that's the issue. The legs are noticeably too small.
It's a different type of method they using. It's not concerned with full range of motion. It's concerned with keeping constant tention on the muscle. Even Ronnie Coleman training style was similar. Just search for Ronnie Coleman - Chest Workout where is wearing all red.

LOL in 1 set he lifts more weight than me in my entire workout xd.
And how did you do in the Olympia???
he mixing power lifting with bodybuilding. either way, he have the best muscle definition from all (apart his legs)
keeps tension on the muscle, creates better hypertrophy
