  • Found a source of pure lines for patching material, and plan to do some comparisons between different weights and materials like pillow ticking. Mother's Day gift, right?

Great Info. there is a lot we can do for ourselves if we take the small amount of time to do it, making lube, cutting patches, making our own cast bullets, it not only saves money, however, you learn so much by doing, reading and using the stuff that we can make. No reason to go buy it already made.- Dave

Some very experienced guys on the americanlongrifle forum told me that 10oz denim with a ball that is .010 smaller than the caliber (.530 ball in a 54 cal for example) is probably the best combination they found. Gives you a tight enough seal to push the very most of the fouling from the previous shot out. But its so tight that probably a coning of the muzzle or at least some blunting of the first 1,5 inches of the rifling at the muzzle is required, otherwise the patch might be cut while loading.

Well we have a major problem with Shield Bugs here, they get into everything, when I open any container they are crammed in tight, and they stink! As for patches, they looks a good haul there, still working on my flintlock, very difficult to get good dimensions over here so far from Kentucky, but we are getting there. I hang a lorry tarp over the front of my barn to stop the damp air driving in, if I do not I get drifts of leave piling up inside. Stay warm! Chris B.

I think summer is here. Believe I made it (said cautiously). Description of the Shield bugs sound like what we call Lady bugs. 🐞 They were brought in to curb some other bug, but it was a huge mistake. They stink, pinch, and pack themselves into electrical boxes or whatever. Their hundreds of them on the sunny side of the house each fall. O.R.

@@oldranger3044 Yes we have "ladybirds," they are no problem here as they are native, and there are plenty of natural predators to keep them in check, but the things we have are Brown Marmorated Shield Bugs, (Halyomorpha halyr) these things were introduced from Asia, they are also present in USA, the problem is, apart from the stink they make, that nothing feeds on them, our Peacock has started to try eating them but they must be pretty awful to eat. Intermittent sun here, so we are not yet enjoying the sun! Stay safe! Chris B.

Crazy Crow is another source for linen, broad cloths and muzzle loading supplies as well as clothing. I'm not affiliated in any way.

You missed your chance to tell your good lady wife that you needed linen because summer's coming and you want to make yourself a linen sundress.

Classic Your comment came just in time. That outfit has 40% off on light weight handkerchief linen (.09” thickness) with 3 yard minimum and I was trying to think up some justification for ordering that much. Thank goodness for your comment. O.R.

Well Sirree - your mosquitos need to SETTLE for you to hit em? - Our New Zealand Sand Flies are big enough to hit 'on the wing 'down here in the South Island and their bites are strong enough to make a white shark scratch behind his ears ..

Sounds like our Horse flys. They can make a horse or cow take notice. O.R.
