A fired sheriff’s deputy in Jackson County, Florida stands trial for allegedly planting drugs on people during traffic stops. Zachary Wester, 28, is accused of framing 12 people, but prosecutors ultimately dropped charges in almost 120 cases that he was involved in. Opening statements are scheduled to begin Monday, May 10, at 9 a.m. ET. You can watch in the player above.
The defendant faces charges including racketeering, official misconduct, perjury, fabricating physical evidence, possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, false imprisonment, and possession of a controlled substance.
According to authorities, Wester’s M.O. was to pull over people for alleged minor traffic violations, searching their vehicles after claiming to smell marijuana, and planting drugs. Naturally, this caused major harm, and not just incarceration. Alleged victim Benjamin Bowling lost custody of his daughter.
His body cam video shows the February 15, 2018 arrest of Teresa Odom.
Wester began to search her white pickup truck at about 4:30 of the footage. As seen on video, he was about to put a black glove on his left hand, but had some fingers closed. The hand disappeared out of frame, and then he put on the glove.
Authorities suggest that he was holding the drugs he planted in the vehicle.
Wester confronted Odom with the substance at about 9:30.
“That is not mine,” Odom said. “No, sir.”
Wester went to the trunk of his cruiser to test the substance.
“Oh, no, Teresa, you’re going to jail,” said a female deputy.
But based on the allegations, it was all Wester’s fault.
“It did return presumptive positive for methamphetamine, okay,” the defendant told Odom. “I’m just letting you know.”
Wester previously served at the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office but got fired eight months into the job. Former Sheriff Nick Finch told the Tallahassee Democrat he warned then-Jackson County Sheriff Lou Roberts not to hire the defendant. He said there were rumors about Wester having sex on the job, and having affairs with married women. Reported misconduct with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office included sharing nude photos of an employee with other deputies, and starting an affair with a woman he arrested for shoplifting a Dr. Pepper.

"Evil" is really the only word for it, too. I found out about this guy from a video posted on _Audit the Audit's_ UA-cam channel -- where he frames a grandmother. Beyond disgusting. And I am 90% sure that the female cop (who appeared to be his partner) was _absolutely aware_ of what he was doing, because of the almost mocking response she had to the poor framed woman _("Theresa, you're going to jail!"_ or something like that). I Pray she gets caught eventually, too!

@@Jwhipification Yeah, I've always heard that if you don't laugh it off or find the humor in them asking you a question like if you have bazookas or hand grenades, that law enforcement usually considers it suspicious. It's insane the type of "logic" many cops use.
This guy is a monster. Destroying innocent lives because he had the power to do so. Just watched the video of the sweet old lady he pulled over for faulty break lights, being all nice and friendly to her while planting drugs in her car not giving a stuff as to what his actions are doing to people so long as he looks good. Glad he was found guilty and jailed but should have been given a longer sentence.

Imagine being someone who has a past with drugs, got cleaned up and ran into this guy. How many of your family and friends would believe that the drugs weren't yours?! He could've caused divorces, loss of jobs, loss of custody...all for what?! This was a high for him.

They don't have to consent... Cops use the dogs to circumvent you not consenting to a search and seizure. Once they deploy the K9 ,he will alert all day every day. ( even though there may be nothing in the car) . So they say they got probable cause to conduct a search. And there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop them from searching your car, even if you say YES they CAN or NO they CAN'T.

His body cam shuts itself off at the apex of crimes, his body cam footage gets erased, his cad report for his biggest drug bust gets erased, the drug testing kit is messed up, drugs get planted in his first aid kit. The police should be subjected to double sentences because they’re employed by the people to uphold our laws and protect our rights. There should also be mandatory minimums for violations of oath. Our law enforcement is an embarrassment to our country and the biggest threats in our communities.
@Stephanie Ella Sadly, those of us outside the US have a very poor opinion on American Law enforcement. It seems that the standards set for entry to the Police Service are sooo low they are almost laughable. It certainly tells us that the US is not a safe place for tourists. I certainly couldn't visit there again.

Our law enforcement definitely prays on the vulnerable so if you have someone from the area you’ll be less of a target for them because they’ll know the laws better and witnesses deter cops. Unfortunately I understand your hesitation, a lot of Americans like me do everything they can to avoid those terrorists.

It's been proven that many see themselves as the good guys and everybody else as the enemy. A high level of education is required and many have Batchelor degrees. I watched Audits video of this...over n over and he 100% went and sat in his car BEFORE starting the search on odems truck, got out WITH IT IN HIS HAND, then went to her truck opened the door and it was still in his hand until he puts it on the blanket then covers it up while putting his gloves on to 'begin' the search then "magically" finds it. Ugh, so disgusting and well beyond shameful! My father was a state captain of state police and my entire family has worked with state police...I can't even begin to tell you how much this guy sickens me. He should get life in prison with NO segregation or special treatment just bc he's a cop! Life in general population, period!

Everything this monster does is premeditated and so very deliberate. From the files that he had with him (he’s a professional, can’t you see that?) to his constant eye contact with the jury (See? I’m not a liar, I’m looking you right in the face! Also, I’m a professional!) And the list goes on... it’s very deliberate and hopefully it will be seen for what it is by the jury. I agree with you but defendants are told by their lawyers to look at the jury when answering questions.. i watch a lot of trials, some people do it and some dont. They should stop telling their clients to look at the jury because it's awkward and cringy. It probably makes jurors uncomfortable to, especially knowing the jurors don't know the defendant was advised to look at them. It's creepy.

Witnesses are supposed to direct their answers to the jury. He will have experience of testifying in court in his previous role as a cop (i.e. before he was sacked). I think the twitching is an indicator that he's lying. There's a lot of discussion on here concerning whether he's lying but it's easy to tell with this defendant- if his lips are moving, he's lying.

I have been arrested several times. Spent many days in jails and prison. Every time (except 1, long story) I was 10000000% guilty of all crimes I was charged. I’ve also spent many times in interrogation rooms and courtrooms. I say all this to point out, in my opinion, he makes his attempts at deception so glaringly obvious by being overly-agreeable on small insignificant details where it doesn’t hinder his defense in an attempt to look honest and eager to “get the truth out”. I recognize this because I’ve done it. (I’d like to add I was a heroin addict, not a police officer ruining lives just for fun) His actions are absolutely disgraceful. Let me get this straight....in all other instances we have seen, as soon as Wester finds suspected narcotics he goes right to the trunk of his patrol vehicle and gleefully tests it and the search ends with the person's detainment. But in the Odom case, he puts the evidence on the floor of the car (he has to admit this and come up with some story because we clearly see it in his hand) and it just happens to blow out into the road (but nothing else in the truck blows out into the road). And then he just so happens to find another baggie of the exact same size and appearance in the bottom of Ms. Odom's purse? You got you hand stuck in the cookie jar, son.
