  • The Aggie Band marches down Houston Street on the campus of Texas A&M University to the tune of The Ballad of the Green Berets while on their way to Kyle Field for the game against the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The band is preceded by the Corps of Cadets staff and followed by Delta Company and other non-band units of the Corps of Cadets.

    I am a Canadian who went to Texas A & M and played for the Aggies as a defensive back. I was drafted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League because I was designated as a Canadian and not an "import". I played 6 games, returning an interception for a touchdown, and broke my ankle never to play again. I will never forget the kindness love and sportsmanship of the people there. Best marching band ever, and the Ballad of the Green Beret brings tears to my eyes. 'Aggies do not lie, cheat or steal nor tolerate those that do' God bless you all. Forever in my heart. I always wondered what the color guard, or seniors with the flagged bugles, stood for, and why they go through a routine of flipping the flags before the halftime show begins. And after reading the comments below, i'm still wondering.

      The seniors with the flagged bugles in fact lead the Band through the drills during the Band's performance. They are Seniors who have put hours upon hours in to merit that position.

    That's one heck of a big band. But why are some in riding boots and others in low quarters?

    • @phoenixrising4573
      @phoenixrising4573 6 років тому +3

      yank1776 Seniors in the corps wear cavalry boots. Very old tradition, the boots are a point of pride. They can also wear low quarters at various times.
      The fish ( freshman) wear not trim on their covers, no rank insignia, and a black belt. Cymbal players are always fish.
      'Heads (sophomores) wear black braid on their covers, and a black belt ( don't ask wear the name head came from...). Usually have a pfc or corporals stripes in brass on their collar.
      The 'butts (juniors....reffering to the cut of the back of the pants.) Wear a slightly different pant ( the back is peaked like a seniors boot pant, old tradition, kind of a cheeky usurpation of a seniors uniform), a white belt and white trim on their cover, and some form of sgts stripes. The bass drummers are always two 'butts.
      Seniors wear black and gold trim on their cover that earned them the nickname 'zips, it looks a.little.like the teeth in a zipper. They also wear a white belt, and the iconic cavalry officers boots and pants. Their rank insignia starts at 1 circle to three, then one diamond up, which is the standard cadet rank insignia for most ROTC groups. If I remember right 3 diamonds is cadet col., and is the overall corps commander.

      Philsy1630 yes, the cords are for various awards some of the six units that make up the band have won during the previous school year. Most are worn over the shoulder but some instruments wear them under so they don’t get caught by other instruments during the tight maneuvers they will be doing during their drill they will be performing at halftime of the football game.

    • @phoenixrising4573
      @phoenixrising4573 6 років тому

      arf shesaid lead element is "corps staff", which is the student admin side. Then the corps colors, then the band. I think that's one of the veteran companies right behind them (delta comp..... they're combat veterans that have joined the corps to earn commissions and degrees).
      What they're actually doing here is marching in before a football game. The band enters the stadium and passes in review, then goes into their section and plays while the outfits step.back off to pass in review. The mounted cavalry unit is the last into the stadium, along with the field howitzer and caisson they have for uh... practical reasons.
      The non band cadets truthfully need their assed marched off every year, they're notorious for not being able to stay in step to music. There's a large amount of rivalry between band and non band cadets, and it unfortunately shows sometimes.

      The higher boots, or just boots as most Ags call them, signify that it is they are seniors.
      The easiest way to tell what year the cadets are is by their cap. The Cadet's caps have different color braids, no braid means that they are a freshman, black means they are a sophomore, white means they are a junior, and gold means they are a senior. However, the gold and black braids look really similar unless you are close, but the senior will always be in his boots so you can still tell that they're a senior.

    Bonjour , autant les armées américaines sont très discipliner lors de leurs défilés autant les spectateurs sont indignes ils n'ont aucun respect pour ceux qui défiles ils traversent la route devant les militaires et leurs musique , n'arrêtent pas de parler , enfin bref comme on le dirai chez nous en France c'est le vrais bordel

      korydwen tallec I speak Spanish well enough to understand the idea.... these are not US soldiers, they're university ROTC cadets, but thank you for tour concern.
      Incidentally, how are the Germans? Finding plenty of shade down the Champs elysees latelely?

    Didn't know they made uniforms that short and that wide for some. Guess there are no physical standards for being in a military corps anymore.

      yes, even have spurs. and riding only has 1 d, not 2 d's. ridding means something different.

    Very sloppy what sort of drill is this when you have such a huge band and can’t keep step? Amateur hour they need about six hours of drill and practice before they go public and for goodness sake how about a bit of uniformity in the uniforms in units! “Bloody shambles” as my RSM would have said. And “swing your arms together to the same height straight through from to rear” but with a bit more profanity and passion he was that kind of soldier.

      @phoenixrising4573 6 років тому

      Peter Kelly American drill does not include the British fascination with arm swinging, but I agree the drill is sloppy. Been a complaint from people for years, I don't think I've ever seen a March in where the non band corps was all in step. Fish drill team and delta (veteran) company yes, but not most of the other units.
      It does usually improve once they're in front of the inspecting officer in the stadium

    I compared a lot of military bands, and this one was really not good. Arrange some adviser of KyotoTachibana High School Band, and take some music lessons. I know that US has some great military music bands, but this one belongs not to them.

    Huge band with bad musicianship and bland uniforms. God awful tone quality, bad attacks and releases, just worse than most high schools here in CA or AZ.
