Do they send you the manual in the mean time so you can have learnt it by the time it arrives? Awesome video by the way. Great to see you fly about the controls
@@JonathanRCross Thanks. Manual in the video comes with the device. Also you can buy it from official website for about ~50eur. And digital version is freely available: static1.squarespace.com/static/5808f139b8a79b2b73259cd1/t/603a19570aa63f6cd3b69e62/1614420320870/cirklon-manual-1.20.pdf
Your sequence of events is incorrect. There’s a waiting list stage that everyone sits in first, and being added to the list is free. You don’t actually pay anything until your spot comes up and there is a unit available to send to you.
If i send the PGM to my Virus B as you do here, the virus misses the first note on the downbeat as it takes a few miliseconds to change patch. Did Access fix this in later models?
In the video I use multitimbral approach so there’s no need to change patches on the fly. I would suggest to use “pre-send pgm” option in instrument definition, it could fix your problem. It takes some time to change the patch on TI too, but not sure how is it faster compared to B. I even did crazy pattern where I randomly change PGM on every step, it’s fun but sometimes Virus crashes, depending on the bank chosen. Let me know how it goes. Cheers
All analog equipment goes into patchbay, from patchbay to the mixing desk. Effects are on send/return of the mixing desk. It’s pretty standard setup. Non-standard thing is that I also route digital signals from audio interface to the console but with the help of custom built switcher - you put DB25 cables A and B and decide which signal goes in (digital or analog) per channel basis. So you can have channels 1-4 on mixing desk coming from the DAW and 5-8 from analog synths. I hope that explains everything. Cheers
Cirklon and Virus are connected with MIDI both ways. It’s no problem with TI Desktop which doesn’t have keyboard. But if you connect Virus Polar or any other synth with keyboard it’s a good idea to turn off “local mode” and choose destination channel on Cirklon directly. Cheers
i feel like any of the elektron digis/takts (particularly) the digitone would be good enough for this style of midi sequencing pretty comparable from the features ive seen here. i guess chord notes are all the same length on the elektrons but other than that, its prety powerful
I use Elektron devices myself and I do agree that for most sequencing tasks it’s more than enough. I love Digiton, it’s one of my favorite digital synths. Cheers
Thanks. This is purely workflow preference. Also, I personally don't know of any MIDI controllers designed with sequencing in mind - aside of Ableton Push, which is in my opinion is quite basic as a sequencer. Yes, you can totally put notes with mouse or MIDI keyboard, draw MIDI CC envelopes, use clever MIDI transform devices, etc - but most of these actions are just faster to do with Cirklon (for me personally). I believe that computer software is the best tool for editing, but not for creating from scratch. As in any creative process, there's synthesis (creating ideas) and analysis (editing and re-arranging). With great hardware devices you get muscle memory, you don't have to look at screen much, you can do multiple things at the same time - and for some people it's enough to choose it as primary tool for creating new musical ideas. Then you put everything in DAW and edit the hell out of it. Cheers
Cirklon itself could work as MIDI patchbay, so this would be probably redundant. But you still connect them with USB or MIDI. See page 7-1 in Cirklon manual for more info. I personally use Cirklon with Multiclock, which also can route and merge MIDI signals. Cheers
@@advanced-research Is the cirklon or the multiclock master? I have a multiclock myself and run it as master right now because it was easier to set it up that way, but from how you write about multiclock routing and merging I would assume you're running the cirklon as master. Could you share your experience? Thanks for a great video btw! I learned a lot of new tricks. Would love more videos, and if possible, with more explanations of the tricks you apply, for example the aux row swap in this video.
@xyzclothing Thanks! I use Multiclock with Ableton and Cirklon. Ableton runs as master, because other way around is much less stable. The whole idea is to sequence with Cirklon, print audio to Ableton, and then combine audio from Ableton with new sequences from Cirklon. So Ableton is no more than glorified tape recorder. Sometimes it’s simpler to just record straight to RME duRec, less chance of audio glitches as with Ableton.
If I want to control, say 16 tracks on the Digitakt, would I create an instrument for each track, labelled "Drums", with a dedicated channel? Or would I create a single instrument then have each track between the Cirklon and Digitakt mapped to the same channel?
Drums are easily mapped as they all have their own dedicated channel. You only have to have one instrument on Cirklon. Different channels for each drum sound though.
As far as I know Digitakt doesn't allow to control all its tracks with single MIDI channel. You can use "Auto" channel in Digitakt MIDI config but it would control only active track. To control all Digitakt tracks with Cirklon separately, you would have to create an instrument called “Digitakt” with “multi” option on. Then you would add multiple instances of that instrument on different Cirklon tracks, each with its own MIDI channel, like 1, 2, 3 and so on. There's probably not a lot of benefits to do that, since you would lose the ability to use parameter locks (CC aux rows is not exactly the same). I usually just sync Digitakt with clock and start/stop messages from Cirklon, it's easier this way.
@@advanced-research digitakt allows to control all its track with a single midi channel! I know because I did that with my vector (the cirklon baby brother)
For people polarized by looking at the cirklon workflow with no hands on experience it deff looks nuts but when its in front of you everything just clicks and you realize why the hype exists (and the 4 year preorder list 💀)

Cheers.
And to be clear, this keyboard only purpose is to type names faster than on virtual keyboard. No other functions.
How to sequence : pay an enormous amount of money. Wait three years. You are now ready to Sequence.
@@lameaim ah v good! Thanks for clarifying. At least you can use the lead time to save up!
How is the keyboard connected to the sequencer? I don't see any cable
Cable is hidden underneath for more tidy shot. Cheers
This thing is nuts. I dont think Ive ever come across it before. How long has it been around? It looks retro and modern at the same time.
I believe the first version of Cirklon was released in 2010
If i send the PGM to my Virus B as you do here, the virus misses the first note on the downbeat as it takes a few miliseconds to change patch.
Cheers
how do you route the entire setup including synths, drum machines, mixer and effects?
All analog equipment goes into patchbay, from patchbay to the mixing desk. Effects are on send/return of the mixing desk. It’s pretty standard setup. Non-standard thing is that I also route digital signals from audio interface to the console but with the help of custom built switcher - you put DB25 cables A and B and decide which signal goes in (digital or analog) per channel basis. So you can have channels 1-4 on mixing desk coming from the DAW and 5-8 from analog synths. I hope that explains everything. Cheers
@@advanced-research thanks! it would be great if you showed your setup on a video one day
What is the computer keyboard? It reminds me of the ibm keyboard I used in the 90s
It’s actually kind of a copy of old macintosh keyboard, Vortex M0110
How could cirklon detect midi cc? Does virus ti midi loopba to cirklon?
Cirklon and Virus are connected with MIDI both ways. It’s no problem with TI Desktop which doesn’t have keyboard. But if you connect Virus Polar or any other synth with keyboard it’s a good idea to turn off “local mode” and choose destination channel on Cirklon directly. Cheers
Kudos: brilliant and fascinating. Love the tutorial.
This video has gone viral from the last time I was here... More than 11K views...Super congrats...
Great video
Reminds me of Propellerhead's Rebirth RB-338.
thanks for this!!!
Thumbs up from the M8 discord server... digging your video!-
i feel like any of the elektron digis/takts (particularly) the digitone would be good enough for this style of midi sequencing
pretty comparable from the features ive seen here. i guess chord notes are all the same length on the elektrons but other than that, its prety powerful
I use Elektron devices myself and I do agree that for most sequencing tasks it’s more than enough. I love Digiton, it’s one of my favorite digital synths. Cheers
The Access Virus is a godsend being multimbral. Whats the best drum machine to pair with it?
Elektron Machinedrum?
@@advanced-research Wish they would make another.
You can try Nord Drum, it’s still produced and has one of the most alien tones, similar to Pearl Syncussion
@@advanced-research Thanks. I will check it out :}
Nice performance, but why purchase a hardware sequencer instead of using a software sequencer with midi controller?
Cheers
Can this interface with MMRC Midi Patchbay with 128 midi channels accessible?
Sometimes it’s simpler to just record straight to RME duRec, less chance of audio glitches as with Ableton.
is this a new version of cirklon with that diff colours on keys and colour display?
Yes it’s Cirklon 2 with color display, host port and bigger memory.
@@advanced-research oh wow 🤗 10k instead of seven k? 😂😂😂
@@yukuzoona6604 Cirklon 2 costs 2000 eur before tax

Where can I get your computer keyboard?
It’s Vortex M0110. I got mine on geekboards.de

how did you connect the ascii keyboard?
Cirklon 2 supports connecting USB keyboards to the Host port. Cheers
@@advanced-research ah! i have a gen 1 cirklon, waiting for the update :)
@@advanced-research Thsk for tips Man ;-)
This must have an insane learning curve
Not really, you can be up and running the same day you get Cirklon. Not knowing advanced workflows doesn’t prevent from having fun right away.

Is the keyboard connected by usb?
Hi yes
