    Maybe Hitler was indeed an atheist. I don't know. Who can? But given what he said on the subject throughout his whole life, I'd find that position pretty hard to defend. And what it had to do with his evil acts... well you get the idea of what I think of that argument.
    Astute viewers will notice that throughout the movie I don't blame Hitler's actions upon his being a Christian. Indeed -- was he a Christian?! Some may differ with me on this, but I say No, he wasn't. Not in any practical sense of the label.
    Saying his evil actions are linked to his status as a Christian either way would be as stupid as saying that they are linked to his moustache, or his atheism.
    Indeed -- that's the point. Atheist or theist, Christian or Hindu, Catholic or Lutheran: none of it matters. HE WAS A NAZI: ISN'T THAT ENOUGH?
    He was a frigging NAZI, with incredible political power that he'd achieved through shrewd statecraft over many years. Obviously THAT is the lethal combination. Not his moustache, not his vegetarianism, not his atheism/religion.
    As close as I could come to linking religion with his actions was actually a portion of the script that didn't make it to the final cut, in which a description of totalitarianism is read out, the contestants are asked to identify what is being described, and it plays out that after all, totalitarianism and religion sound an awful lot like each other.
    Initially I had intended to put the laugh segment last, but was afraid that the other sections might be too slow and boring to sit through, and people might leave before seeing all those fantastic quotes of Hitler talking about his love of the Creator etc. So -- if you think the vid goes downhill a bit after that, I kind of agree. It's just the best format I could come up with, and I tried them all, I think!
    Great thanks to those who responded to my call for voice extras to carry out quite a task: recording themselves laughing their heads off for a full minute. The response was fantastic, and very very funny to listen to and mix.
    Also, to those who helped me find videos of people claiming that Hitler was an atheist and did his evil in the name of atheism. **Especially OGJimbo.** The clip of Father Jonathon from FOX News I had in mind from the start. Fuck you, Fr. Jonathon.
    And to the others featured in the ads (anyone who'd put themselves in front of a camera and declare that Hitler acted out of atheism deserves to be ridiculed. The ad breaks are my contribution to that ridicule.) : if you DMCA me for including your clips, despite their certainly coming under FAIR USE for criticism; I'll put the video file on mediafire and it will be mirrored on hundreds of channels within a few hours. Shoot yourselves in the foot if you really really want to.

Christians dont use the No True Christian Fallacy anywhere near as often as Atheists do. "So you're read Mein Kampf? A big fan of Hitler, are you? Wow."
      You've got to admire that question. There's so delightfully no right answer. Say "no" and you shouldn't be listened to because you don't know what you're talking about. Say "yes" and you shouldn't be listened to because you're morally compromised - not only is admitting to reading "Mein Kampf" almost like admitting you're a nazi, but as a bonus puts you in a position of having to go "I've read Hitler's book and you've got him all wrong!"

      Ask her why Moses, after giving the commandment "Thou Shalt Not Kill" told God's people to kill their brother, friend and neighbor, claiming it was what God said.
      "26 So Moses stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the LORD, come to me.” And all the Levites gathered around him. 27 He told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each of you men is to fasten his sword to his side, go back and forth through the camp from gate to gate, and slay his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’” 28 The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people fell dead."

    People can be a monster whether they believe in god or not. It does not matter whether Hitler believed in god. That being said, paraphrasing from Richard Dawkins-
    A belief in a higher power has a logical progression to violence (not that it does in every case of course, stay with me). If one believes a creator of the universe, an all powerful lord, and follows a religious interpretation of that deity, they are more likely to commit atrocities than someone who does not hold that a belief. For example, extremist do not wake up everyday saying, "What can I do to spread evil today?" Most believe that the horrible things they do are holy/just and they will be rewarded by "god" in the afterlife. There is no progression from an atheist world view to that state of mind.
    That being said, evil and cruelty is everywhere. I wish we would set aside our petty religions and insatiable hunger for power and just fucking leave together in peace. Can we all do that? No..? OK.

    I'd like to see Hitler's references to god after he had a firm grip on power. Being the natural skeptic that I am, I've always believed his references to god during his rise was meant to appeal to the population and aren't truly reflective of his belief in god. After all, nothing has proven to be more effective to justify extreme actions and genocide than appeal to the divine. He's just following the historical how-to manual on genocide. It seemed to me that after he got power, he used less divine rhetoric.
    Also, I think it's worth pointing out that to prop up Hitler, Ho Chi Min, Stalin, Richard Dawkins (yes, I actually saw these guys grouped together in a meme) as morality-starved atheist leaders, you need to ignore every other war, leader, "christ-chosen" king, etc. throughout history.

    I don't understand the Hitler being an atheist. Regardless of whether it's true... so what? If Hitler was an atheist, then good for him, how would that ever affect any other atheists around the world, EVER?

  • @bwdoggrooming4482
    @bwdoggrooming4482 8 років тому +4

    I just don't see why it matters either way. If he was atheist it means nothing about other atheists, same with Christians. Not all are purely good or bad.

    • @Ianx50
      @Ianx50 8 років тому +8

      Exactly, and yet Christians try to distance themselves from Hitler against that very reason, as if "Hitler was an atheist" is undeniable evidence to support that godless atheists are simply evil. But obviously, such an evil man couldn't possibly be a part of our ~peaceful~ (read: genocidal) religion.

    To any theists arguing that this doesn't matter, and that Hitler's religious views didn't reflect Christianity as a whole... You're right. Completely. He could've believed in Unicorns and it wouldn't have changed what happened. Radical anything is typically bad, so don't use hitler as an argument against endorsing atheism. Or anything, other than genocide.

    1:44ff - The words "God With Us" were traditionally on the belts of the Prussian army since 1847 and later the German Reichswehr since 1871 and all throughout the Weimar Republic, and the Bundeswehr even continued to use these words as well after WW2 all the way until 1962. This was just the Nazis keeping what was already there. Of course Hitler wasn't an atheist, but this piece of "evidence" for his theism is bad.

    I read a rather large book which devoted a large portion to Hitler. Apparently he said whatever he needed to whoever just to get what he wanted. He had no problem going back on his word which he did after swearing he wouldn't on so many occasions. You just couldn't believe anything he said. Its hard to say exactly WHAT he believed.
