Jeep JL Wrangler Muffler Removal and Dynomax Tail Pipe Installation with SOUND CLIPS

- Call us crazy but Cindy and I really like the sound of the factory, Jeep JL Wrangler exhaust system. It sounds clean, throatty and without being too loud across the spectrum. In fact, we like it so much that we've been reluctant to remove our muffler in spite of the fact that it really is a HUGE rock target, one that we've hit plenty of times and one that will cause you to break the aluminum exhaust hangers. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the experience we've acquired on our JK Wranglers over the last 12+ years has taught us, there are definitely drawbacks to removing the OE muffler an/or running an aftermarket exhaust system. The biggest of which isn't so much an issue with sound quality but rather, how it can drone at highway speeds. If you do a lot of long highway driving like we do to get to trails across America and back again, an exhaust drone can really wear you down. Needless to say, when we installed our new Dynomax Muffler Elimination Pipe, we did so with reservations and only because we knew that we could always return things back to stock. And, after running it for a couple of months and racking up a few thousand miles on it including drives out to places like Moab and back, I'm happy to say that we're glad we did it.
In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you get to see just how easy it is to ditch your massive muffler and install a Dynomax Delete tailpipe and all for about $90. We also made sure to include some sound clips, in various situations and we hope you'll find them to be helpful.

This guy is smart, reads the instructions in full no matter what it is!
LOL - I'm always happy when something I buy comes with instructions :)
i love my loud exhaust the drone hides all the other noises that I cant afford to fix LOL
A loop delete might alleviate the drone a bit
I like the way you think
Installing mine tomorrow. Thanks so much for the install video and review. I’ve learned SO much in the last year and have done so much with my JL (first Jeep and first time working on any vehicle) and I absolutely could not have done it without your great instructions and videos!
That's awesome and we're so glad to hear it! Our only hope in making videos like this is to help others to help themselves :)
Eddy, when I first saw this video, I was like...yes! But, I was a little bit hesitant also because I didn't want that ricey sound either. Videos can be deceiving sometimes...but, I went ahead and ordered it. I've had in sitting in my garage for a couple of days. Finely got around to installing it today and I love it!! My wife was like..."don't you need a muffler?" I was like..."well, you don't really NEEEED it." LOL She heard me coming back from my test drive and she had a smile on her face. She's like..."THAT sounds good!" LOL Thanks for doing what you do, Eddy.
LOL - awesome, thank you for sharing that and I'm glad that we were able to help out :)
What about the emission test?
been a while, still happy with the louder exhaust ? thinking about adding one
Hey Eddy can you do a garage tour one day? I think a lot of people would love to see your Jeep collection and where they live.
dude yes!! I've always wondered what's in his garage!
Yes! I’d love that.
LOL - funny you should ask, a small something will be coming your way soon and I think it might satisfy a bit of your curiosity :)
twentyfoursyc I’ve been mean to ask the same question but I just never did felt kind of weird to ask .. but here it is yes eddi little tour will be awesome
You gonna wait till the JT arrives?
I got to meet you at the Jeep Bash and told you how much your videos have helped me preparing for the arrival of my new JLURXR. This video just adds to that. I wasn’t sure where to go with the exhaust mods but thanks to you, I have a Dynomax on order.
Keep up the awesome videos. Thanks again.
Awesome! Pleasure to meet you at Jeep Bash 👍
Been working on my own stuff 50 plus years and my tools never looked so clean and organized, your whole garage looks spotless.
Sounds good to me and you save some weight.
LOL - I guess I'm a little OCD that way.
Glad I found your channel, very informative, clean camera work , sound quality and A+ honest product reviews. The only thing so far I really dislike is your garage, it makes me so jealous. Thank you guys for the channel
LOL - thank you. Glad you enjoy our videos :)
Just made the purchase. Cant wait to install. Been watch your videos for a long time now. First car I’ve ever worked on and it’s really a blast. Would love to wheel with you one day. Thank you for always wanting to help the Jeep community. Keep it up man
Awesome and it would be great to wheel with you someday 😎
Just bought mine! Used your link. Glad I could support this channel. You’re the best Ed!
Thank you for your support. All we would hope to do is to share our experiences with people like you and with the hopes that the information we provide can be helpful :)
Your content is always the best. Honest passionate and to the point!
You rev high? I rev at 3k changing gears
Months ago, I saved this video to my Watch List. Today, I received my Dynomax from my kids for Christmas. Your video helped me with the entire install. Thanks for your helpful tutorial. Merry Christmas.
Awesome, so glad to hear it! :)
Great video Eddie. I’ve been watching your SEMA 2019 nightly updates......you’re ALL OVER IT man!! Great job from a newbie to the JEEP community. We have our very first JEEP .... ‘18 JLU , Punkin Orange. Love it!
Awesome, congratulations!
This was the second mod I did to my JL. I love the sound. I have a 6spd so I can keep the rpms to keep the noise down when needed.
Awesome :)
Sounds great. I was thinking of doing this to my JL . You answered my questions. Thanks for all the testing.
Awesome, so glad to hear it :)
Check out flow master outlaw series muffler that is tucked up nice and high just like this. Sounds amazing if you like a throaty tone.
I'll look into it. Thanks for the info
This is awesome. We appreciate the thorough research and review. I just found one on Amazon and we are in motion.
Awesome! Glad we could share some of the solutions we've come up with and that they've been able to help you out as well.
This is what I did with my Jeep JL rubicon 2months ago. No more aluminum exhaust muffler hangers that I had to replace. I like the sound I think it give a little more power the transmission doesn’t wonder with the gears as much because I’m running 35’s on my jeep now.
This video became like the test ride of the Supercar!
The sound of the new muffler is really good.
The exhaust on my 3.8 JK sucked at first, but after I re geared to 5.13 and was able to quit using OD off and it broke in....it isn't half bad now! And I love the clearance too! Awesome video 👍
Simple and straight forward. Something to add to my list. Awesome video!
Yup, doesn't get much easier :)
Thanks for the video and sound clips! Mine showed up around 3 today and was installed by 4!
Awesome! Glad to hear it :)
Very happy w/ my Dynomax muffler delete, great to have a quality video on this product and really nice details along the way, well done! Not only do you get rid of that beer keg under your Jeep but you get to hear what your motor is doing when you want to!
been awhile still happy with the sounds, would you do it again ? is it worth the money (-:
@@woof3598 No, I replaced it a couple months after that comment. The drone wasn't acceptable day in and day out. I have the Magnaflow dual axle back setup now. 100x better.
This is one of the best product reviews. Thanks!
Awesome, Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the vid and suggestion i just got mine in, put it on today in 30 min with no jack or lift. on my gravel driveway. sounds great!! highly recommend!! take care love the channel!
So glad to hear it!
Finally got one of these after doing research, listening to numerous different exhaust replacement sound clips, and definitely like the subtle but noticeable sound this one makes. Jealous of the garage bud, was laying under mine in my gravel driveway. That friggin obnoxiously large factory unit came down and decided to smack me in the chest for good measure lol. Had it done in about 30mins with just hand tools like yours, relatively easy to do alone all things considered.
Awesome :)
Love the throaty growl tone.
I love the sound also love your channel keep up with the awesome work you do
Awesome - so glad to hear you've been enjoying our videos :)
I think that’s my next mod. Thanks for the awesome review.
Awesome, glad we could help out :)
I just installed the same, I've got the 2.0L, louder but not intolerable. I'll give it a week before I'll pass judgment. Thanks for the install videos, I like the editing.
Hi. I have the same engine, wanted to know if you still have the muffler delete?
@@andrewjackman8926 No, I didn't like the sound. I ended up tossing the pipe and going with a Borla Touring exhaust, It's much better.
When I was watching your Moab video's I was thinking that the Jeep sounded different. I like the way it sounds, I think it sounds good.
LOL - yeah, we got this on just before heading out to Moab :)
I actually think it sounds good, and the fact that you get more clearance under there, is a 10 in my book.
The clearance is why you should do this but the sound really isn't so bad.
It is always difficult to judge on video, but I think it actually sounded decent. Decent enough that I'm going to consider the comparable kit on my '15 JKU. Thanks for the vid!
Great job Eddie and thanks for another very good video.
You bet! Hope it helps you to decide how you might build up your Jeep :)
Thanks for this. Helped me with the install. Pretty easy to do and sounds great. Not too loud and not too ricey.
Glad our video could help you out :)
Sounds good! The stock exhaust sounds great too IMO - near perfect for me. No drone on long trips, but has a decent growl on acceleration & when downshifting. I painted my muffler & the exhaust pipe with high-temp black paint.
How has your high temp black paint held up over the years?
UPDATE: The unit was back ordered EVERYWHERE, but finally arrived this morning. Eddy makes EVERYTHING look easy. Having a lift is a huge advantage (and, I continue to envy Eddy and Cindy). But, so does all weather carpet in the garage for lots of on the back sliding and maneuvering. Thanks to Eddy's bolt-by-bolt breakdown and up I now have the Dynomax Muffler Elimination Pipe installed and growling happily.
LOL - that's awesome. :)
I got this based on this video and your recommendation. Loving it. Thanks!!
Awesome, glad to hear it!
That sounds a whole lot better than I thought it would. I actually liked it. For $95 it’s certainly worth a try.
Kinda what we thought. For $95, it was worth a try. If we hated it, we could always go back to stock.
Hello again !! I wanted to give you a update . I bought the muffler delete for my Jeep JL 2.0 and it's nice, but the only complaint I have is on cold starts. Being that the car revs high at first it is a little to load. Especially if you go to work early in the morning and you have neighbors lol . Besides that it does have a good sound. Thanks Wayalife for getting back to me it does fit a 2.0 .
Thanks for the follow up
angel13jr you should make a video! I was thinking about going this route but never got around to trying it. Would love to hear it!
@@ztobro Hello
I'm going to be replacing the muffler delete with a Flowmaster American thunder exhaust . Hopefully it gives me the results I'm looking for. I will make a comparison video and post it in the near future.
Whats Up Eddie!!! Good to see you brotha, like how you slam those boxs down lol time for tinkering. Good to see you Bro, got my Challenger back Eddie, selling her for the Rubicon ASAP :) just negotiating. Hard to find In LA with options we want. So excited man, glad to find your channel.
LOL - good luck to you :)
Yep - going to have to do this to mine. I’ve listened to about every sound clip of exhausts on these 2.0’s - this delete sounds better than all of them IMO. Especially at idle.
Thx 👊🏼
I love mine. I got this about 2 years ago after watching your video. Cheap easy mod.
Right on! Glad to hear it!
Sounds sweet Eddi awesome choice
Yeah, not too bad :)
Nice clean little Jeep
Thank you :)
Awesome video as always. I have the same axle back and love it. I'm still sick Rubicon and I have no drone in 7th or 8th. Also have you discovered the awesome blip sound when you use manual shift 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Sound really cool. Has to be high rpm though.
Ultimate JL incoming
Bought, installed and like it. In the cabin WOT 79 dB in second gear (JLU soft top).
Awesome and thanks for the dB :)
Another great video. I just installed this on my 2020 Willys with the 2.0 turbo. I didn’t hear any drone, just a deeper rumble. At cruise it’s hardly noticeable.
Awesome, glad to hear it!
I think its a great easy one to do. Plus hard to hear anything over the tire noise LOLOLOL. Love it man
I added the dynomax elimination pipe and while it didn’t drone too bad, it sounded too loud and like a “Wana be sports car” but I liked the look and clearance it gave so I had a local muffler shop add a flowmaster 40 series directly after the factory resonator and now it sounds perfect! I didn’t want to delete the resonator like all the rock crawler exhausts do so this custom set up is perfect and cheaper.
LOL!! I totally hear ya. Great idea on the Flowmaster 40. Back on our old 2012 JK, we tested out a few different kits and ended up settling on a Dynomax Quiet Crawler kit and it really helped things out. May have to give what you did a try.
Thanks for this Eddy ! I put one on both mine and my wife's Jeep! She says she can hear the motor to shift now!
LOL - awesome
Sounds great to my ears.
Yeah, it really isn't too bad.
Awesome been wondering about this...Thanks so much!!!
So glad that we could be of help to you with this video :)
SOOO much quieter than a jk with a muffler delete, what the heck! Sounds good 👍
The JL really is a different Jeep for sure.
Installing mine this weekend.
Awesome!
it sounds good with the new pipe!
Yeah, it really isn't as bad as I thought it would be.
I tried Dynomax and Pypes on my JK's and was not happy at all. On our 2016 Hard Rock JK Pypes ruined my exhaust valves and had a very high drone on upshifts climbing the mountains on a 6,600 mile trip to Moab and Colorado. So we looked all over and read data reports on a variety of exhausts used by Jeepers. We tried the Borla Rock Climber and it was instant love, right back pressure, right sound with an amazing amount of clearance so we upgraded all 3 Jeeps the Borla Rock Climber exhaust. LOVE THEM TO DEATH :)
To be clear, this is NOT a JK. On a JK with a 3.6L, I couldn't agree with you more - been there, done that. That being said, I have not seen or felt the kind of issues that I had with my JK and at about $90, I thought it was worth the try and I'm glad that I did.
I would imagine the JL motor is similar with an updated transmission. Seems it would shift more when loaded for trips. Just an observation to help.
Oh no, I understand what you're saying, trust me. However, the all new 8-speed transmission is probably the BIGGEST difference between the 2 Jeeps. You really need to drive one before imagining how it would do.
Doesn’t sound as bad as I would have thought. Thanks
Sounds damn good!
Great video and info! Thanks 👍
Glad we could share this with you :)
No way! I didnt know that you were only 30 minutes from me!!
Great video thank you!
Awesome, it doesn't sound bad at all. Could be a bit deeper as a sound preference, but it sounds good. I saw another UA-camr install a I think charger resonator along with deleting his muffler and that sounded awesome too.
For about $90, I think this setup worked out well.
Yeah for 90 bucks and like 10 minutes of work that's hard to beat.
Just ordered mine!
I like how loud it is when he drops stuff on that table
I'm a fan of weight savings too. This seems like a nice mod
We figured, for about $90, we wouldn't have too much heartburn if we didn't like it. So far, it's been a good mod.
Nice. One of the first mods I did on my JK was a Flowmaster muffler that was a lot smaller than stock, but still smog legal in CA. This would be perfect, except for the smog part. Looks easy enough to put the stock muffler back on for smog test day, though.
Oh yeah, take all but about 10 min. Piece of cake.
This won’t be an issue on smog day. It doesn’t take out the cats, just the muffler.
First of all ,Thank you for your informative videos. I also like the oem muffler sound on my Jeep JL. I do like the dual pipe look and would like to keep the same factory sound since I do enjoy listening to my music more. In your opinion, which dual pipe exhaust system comes close to oem sound? Thanks
Honestly, I couldn't tell you for sure being that I have never run a setup like that. We play too much out on the rocks and they would get crushed. Sorry.
Sounds great.
My exhaust is smashed , this upgrade is on top of my list.
Well, I hope we've been able to help answer a few questions for ya :)
Great video and we all thank you. I know you can’t answer all questions. But have you kept this delete or gone with something else. Thanks 🙏
Actually, we still have it on our JL :)
Appears to be a good choice. Sounded good in video. Hopefully not significantly different in real life. I like that clearance, weight and hanger breakage relief. Hopefully get to drive buddies with D60s and forties this week. Maybe do all at same time? Thanks for the video insight. OllllllO
Honestly, what you hear in the video is pretty spot on to what it sounds like in person.
Sounds good to me Eddie! Tough!
Yeah, not too bad :)
Never in my life have I ever seen anyone floor a damn Jeep so much 😂😂 damn
Definitely adds some better clearance no idea why jeeps have such a big exhaust lol sounds good low tone looks good 👍 those 513 gears sure get her up to speed as always be safe
I'm sure they have their reasons. I still like the OE muffler sound better but for what this gives you, the change is worth it to us.
I just got back from Moab and my stock tailpipe took a serious beating. I'm definitely buying one of these before I go back. I hate loud exhaust but the benefit from relocating the tailpipe outweighs any increase in volume.
Well, this will help to fix that for sure and really, it doesn't sound all that much louder.
@@wayalife So I'm having a hard time finding this part for my 2015 JK. Do you happen to have a JK link?
Greg Roberts this is made for the JL. I might recommend that you look into the quiet crawler system for the JK
@@wayalife Unfortunately "DynoMax QuietCrawler Cat-Back System is no longer available." All I'm seeing is $400+ cat back systems. I was really hoping to find a simple (ie. affordable) muffler/tailpipe delete.
What no eye protection? As I remember 4x4 had a lot of crud that may fall in your eyes.
It would've been great to hear a comparison. A few sound bites of before the install. But regardless, another great video. Is there a list somewhere of all your current mods on your JL?
Sorry about that, I suppose that would have made the most sense to do. I guess we weren't even 100% convinced that we would keep the thing installed. As far as a list of current things installed goes, sorry, I don't have one that's up to date but I will try to fix that in the next day or so. You would be able to see it here when done wayalife.com/blog/index.php/2018/02/02/jet-li-our-new-2018-jeep-jl-wrangler-rubicon-unlimited/
All I can say is nice!!!
Glad you like what you see :)
@@wayalife I had to subscribe...I love Jeeps and you had a Trump sign in the garage!
I've been gutting the interior on my JLU for an audio install and I keep looking at the storage bin in the floor of the rear. Any thoughts on pulling that out, replacing with a flat aluminum plate, and freeing up a ton of space for a tucked exhaust?
Not me. I use that storage space 😎
Great sound, les weight, better clearance = triple bonus!
Definitely frees up space for better ground clearance and the sound really isn't so bad :)
“I like the sound of the factory exhaust” said no one ever!...until now
LOL - I dunno, I like the factory sound. :D
I just got a job with the 3.6 and factory exhaust sounds good. This sounds better tho lol. Will be doing this
GREAT video as always! Perhaps a dumb question, but but does a muffler delete adversely affect emissions testing? Would hate to purchase and install a kit, only to fail my next smog inspection. Also curious if there was any noticeable affect (positive or negative) on engine performance. Appreciate any feedback and happy Jeepin'.
It shouldn't but if you live in a state with strict emissions laws, it might prevent you from passing if only because the system has been altered. Also, you will never see any measurable engine performance gains by just removing a muffler.
Eddie. Does the rev limiter keep you from revving over 3,000 rpm when in park or neutral? That’s what I noticed on our ‘19 JLUR with the 3.6.
Yes. Pretty lame if you ask me.
The manual doesn’t have it
Just purchased a 2019 Rubicon JL 4 Door, with the 2.0 turbo.
My with drives a LandRover Discovery Sport and loves this Jeep!!
She said it could be her daily driver, she loves it so much.
Really enjoy your channel.
My questions are... muffler for the Turbo. I don’t like the sound it makes.
A good lift for the occasional 37” tire?
Will run stock 33’s for the must part.
Thanks again.
You can definitely run something like this on your JL. As far as lifts go, I suppose it depends on what kind of budget you have to work with. Me personally, I might consider the Rancho Sport Lift.
Just watched your video on Deer valley with the Rancho 2” sport lift.
Looks like the lift for me.
Thank you.
Now I have to buy my own JL, because my probably won’t let me play with her new toy..🤣🤣🤣
Love the extra clearance. Running no muffler/spark arrestor in the national forest trails here in Washington State would have it's downfalls.
It's not like this completely eliminates any form of restriction. There's still a resonator in between the engine and the tailpipe.
hmm. I wonder what that wound sound like on my 2.0 JL. The problem with my 2.0 is that it is so quiet off road that I cant tell what the engine is doing unless I look at the RPM. But I still want to be able to hear my premium stereo going down the highway. But then again my 37 inch mud terrain coopers are not helping that either.
I think a lot of what you're not hearing is because the 2.0L is a semi-hybrid, as in, it runs off the battery until you get going. At about $90 and 10 minutes to install, I'd say it'd be worth the test.
I tried to review all the comments looking for what motor you have? Running a 2.0L and would be curious about my options. I think it sounds pretty good myself but I would have the exact same concerns you did.
We have a 3.6L
Awesome nice item
Freaking sounds great!
It took me a bit to warm up to it but now I think it sounds pretty good too :)
Wayalife did you get your steering completely worked out?
@@jonerikgreene1175 The new track bar we installed pretty much took care of our problem. The new Synergy steering components tightened everything up even more. So yeah, we've been good for a while now.
Wayalife I thought so when I saw you one handing the steering wheel at 75 mph in this video. Good work, I’m excited to see what you do with the JT (As of now, I’m leaning towards a Gladiator myself)
Is your JL 2.0? Will this fit my 2020-2011 JL 2.0? Thanks! Sound great!
Do you think a different Exhaust Tip would change the tone to your liking? you could try that.
I'm actually okay with what I've got now. Nothing short of a muffler would change the tone to what I'd prefer.
If you don't mind me asking, what fuel economy do you get now? I know 513 is the best for your tire size as your 7 and 8th gears would go away without regearing. I'm guessing potentially better than if you didn't regear but had bigger tires?
Actually, with 5.13 gears, we're running at about 400 rpm HIGHER now or at least, on the highway and have seen a DECREASE in mpg because of it. 5.13's help you to regain power but if mpg is a concern of yours, 4.88 might be a better choice with 37's. I talk about it here: ua-cam.com/video/-bUxXM0GCr4/v-deo.html
Good vid, thanks. And just curious, do you still have the Dynomax on or something else?
Yup, still running this :)
@@wayalife I just installed the K&N one and like it. It cost a bit more but its 304 stainless so less rust since I live at the beach. Has nice sound also!
Any signs of power loss ? Maybe due to reduced back pressure due to the muffler delete?
I did the delete on my jeep and it feels like I lost some power.
Yea this is definitely the one I’d go with
Awesome 👍
Just ordered one.
Awesome! I think you'll be happy with the space it frees up.
Wow, I was expecting a horrible sound without the muffler. That actually sounds better! Very cool. Also, thinking of regearing from 4.10s to 5.13s, I have the same size and brand of tire but original axles. What kind of city MPG are you getting? Thanks Eddy.
With 5.13's and 37's, you will be running at about 400 rpm higher and you will see a decrease in mpg. I talk about it in this video ua-cam.com/video/-bUxXM0GCr4/v-deo.html
Dangit! I'm subscribed to Way of Life and somehow I missed that video. Thanks a ton for the reply.
Dynomax needs to chef something like this up for the JT!!
I’m still waiting for mine to come in. Is it okay if I rock my muffler delete without a pipe for a while?, sounds scary but looking down there there are heat shields and I believe it won’t really hurt the car for a couple weeks. Also, for the past two days I’ve been driving around with a delete and the drone on hwy speeds (65-70) is really noticeable, and I can’t wait for my delete pipe to come in.
Oh yeah, you'll be fine.
So I removed my muffler without adding anything on, and there’s quite a large drone... would buying this pipe make a huge difference? I’m not too sure what the specific reason there is to buying a pipe rather than only taking off the muffler and leaving it at that?
Not a huge difference but there is a difference for sure. I tested it out both ways and you can tell. Also, I didn't like how the exhaust was just blowing on the bottom of the tub.
