So, Aro killed his own sister, the love of Marcus's life, to keep him with them. Caius knows this too. He was in it. Anyway, Aro used Chelsea, a coven member not shown in the movies, to keep Marcus from leaving despite his mate's death. Chelsea has the ability to make or break a relationship. With her powers, Marcus stayed but staunchly refused to participate in Aro and Caius's little games. This is why he's so eager to die and so not eager to join his coven mates. It's not just boredom from immortality. He's a broken man.

Which is why Marcus is shown putting up no fight when he is killed in the climactic battle. He says finally and opens his arms to embrace Death as an old friend. He was so fed up with everything Aro did and wanted nothing more than to join his mate. Thus, Marcus is the least problematic Volturi and actually more like Carlisle, wanting more peaceful solutions to conflict.

Stephanie Flores yeah I think that’s it, in “Life and Death” (which is um a gender bent retelling of the first twilight) he actually finds out what Aro did and kills him.
Thank you so much for portraying how funny Smeyer wrote his and Aro's dynamic in the book; Aro as a chaotic crackhead and Marcus as the bored, probably depressed straight man. The music and subtitles were, of course, what made this even better :D
