Dolly Parton is a world treasure. Read about some of her amazing philanthropy. She has never forgotten where she came from, or the people who need help.
In the story of Joseph in the Bible, the coat of many colors was an expensive, princely gift from his wealthy father (because of the cost of obtaining different dyes) and the result was his brothers attacked him and sold him into slavery from envy. When she wrote this, the vast majority of people would know the story of Joseph in detail. She is drawing a parallel between Joseph's coat - high in monetary value - and the coat her mother made from rags - valuable because of the love her mother put into it. She is saying that something done from love and kindness is as valuable or more valuable than something that is expensive. I fear a lot of people miss the nuance of what she wrote these days because they don't have the same context.
I think the same thing when I hear Brooks and Dunn sing Believe and they say, "I'm findin' more and more truth in the words written in red" because I am wondering how many people in today's world know that in the Bible the words of Jesus are written in red. I wonder what that statement by Brooks and Dunn means to people who are listening to the song but have idea what "the words written in red" even means. I also see people react to George Jones "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and they have no idea that he finally stopped loving her because he died. The words "They placed a wreath upon his door" doesn't mean anything to them because they have no idea that in the old days, particularly in the South, a wreath on the door means there has been a death in the family. I heard one young man react to this and he ended the song with a big smile on his face and he said, "Sometimes you might think you would love someone forever but they would do so much to you that you just have to give up and move on." I felt like banging my head on the wall!
@@maryannanderson2213 even when I was young I didn't understand what the wreath was about, although I had no trouble understanding that he stopped loving her because he died. How many people younger than 50 have ever made an operator-assisted long distance call, know the significance of a phone number written on a matchbook, have ever seen a matchbook, have ever used a pay phone much less paid for a call with a dime?

This is easily my personal favorite of all of Dolly's songs. It may not technically be the "best" from a musical point of view, but the message it contains is SO powerful, SO beautiful. And to think that Dolly actually experienced this as a child.
Dolly Parton still has her coat if you ever get into the Tennessee Hills of Appalachia you'll find Dollywood you'll find it in her Museum and her whole life history she is really who she sings about
My mom and dad were from southern WV and both of my Grandpa's were killed in coal mine accidents before I was born but they grew up poor mom said for Christmas they would get apples and oranges and that was a big deal for them so i understand what she means in this song the love of her mom was worth all the money in the world
I was 4 when I accused Santa of racism. I asked my dad why my friends got less presents the rich kids. My dad said every child gets two presents. One from the Salvation Army and one from the marine corps. Then my dad said if we have extra money we send it to Santa for supplies to make more gifts. I felt better because I knew my friends parents were struggling to get food on the table. I was born and raised in the ghettos of Detroit.
You are a lovely soul ❤ This song reminds a lot of us of hard times growing up. Your childhood never leaves you and as, like me, you get well into your 70s those memories get stronger. Lots of love from an old Granny from Northern Ireland. ❤
Miss Dolly is a true example of what the world needs more of today, kindness, unconditional love, heartfelt generosity and an abundance of humility. Miss Dolly has always lifted people up with her songs, her generosity to causes and people and her love and kindness for others.

This is an autobiographical story. Very much true. There is even a movie of the same name (“Dolly Parton: Coat of Many Colors”) about her childhood and her coat. It starts Jennifer nettles, who’s 1/2 of sugarland, a country music powerhouse duo, as her mother.

Dolly Parton is a country legend who has been recording & writing songs since the 60's. Love her storytelling songs the most like "Jolene" & "Coat Of Many Colors". She has had so many hits such as "Yellow Roses", "My Tennessee Mountain Home", "Here You Come Again", "9 To 5" etc. She did a lot of great duets with Kenny Rogers & Porter Wagoner. She also collaborated with Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris & they released a few "Trio" albums.
She had a long partnership/mentorship with Porter Wagner, and when she went out on her own, she wrote him a song to say how she felt. That was "I Will Always Love You." It did quite well, reaching no. 1 on country charts twice. But her success with it was little compared to the Whitney Houston cover version. Dolly did not begrudge Whitney that success. And I recommend to Saeed: react to both Dolly's version and to Whitney's version, together. (There is also a Linda Ronstadt version, but I am totally unfamiliar with it, so I cannot recommend it).
Dolly had a movie Coat of Many Colors and the second part to that movie Christmas of Many Colors. Jennifer Nettles ( sang the song Stay that you reacted to a few days ago ) portrays Dolly’s mom in both movies
Dolly is another I've been listening to for about 50 years. My mum took me to see her in 2011 and she was absolutely fantastic. No support act - just her and her band. She told about the songs and played so many different instruments. She is an amazing talent. Her voice is one of a kind. She also plays banjo and several other instruments. Dolly was one of 12 kids. I totally get the being so proud of what her mother made. I can remember graduating Uni and my parents had paid for all my books over the time (even though I was a mature age student). They bought me a few things because they were so proud of me . My dad also gave me one of his watches that he really liked. A few days later he was upset and told me he should have bought me something else instead of doing that. I asked why? As in did he wish he had kept it. He said no, just that he should have maybe bought me a new one. I told him that I loved it and I would cherish it more because it was his. It's not all about new glitzy expensive things. Sentimental value means so much more.
This is my all time favorite song of Dolly's .. She is our National Treasure.. in the USA.. She's just an amazing person and her songs are written from the heart and her experiences. Dolly says this is her favorite song.
Yes, Saeed, she is the most down to earth person, and as someone else stated, she never forgot her roots. Loretta Lynn was another singer that never forgot her roots. Dolly is an icon for sure. She stood up to the bullies..she was so proud of that coat. She appreciated all that she had, especially the love of her family. Thank you, for listening to Dolly..I truly hope you get to see Dollywood, in Tennessee, but stay away from Copperhead Rd. 😊❤
Loretta Lynn - Coal Miner's Daughter. There are so many in every genre from when I grew up. Harper Valley PTA - Jeanne C. Riley. Ode to Billy Joe - Bobbie Gentry. The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkle And many, many more. I am so lucky to have grown up when I did as far as music is concerned (born 1957). I got to hear it all.
I’ve never been able to hear this song without crying. I clicked on this as I wanted you to hear it but I didn’t want to watch cause I knew I would be bawling. Interesting take from you. I had never considered suicide. Just assumed she had gotten ill and died at home. Thanks for great reactions.
I’m 45 now, but still remember listening to this song with my mom who passed when I was 12. I still to this day call this the patches on my britches song.
Now Dolly is the queen of country. Not because of her vocals or looks... ! But it's her heart and dedication to God. Many of her songs have mentioned God. OR are very inspirational. The story of Joseph is a beautiful one. It's interesting, for one of her first songs, she wrote about a great man from the Old Testament. Ps. The area she grew up in has always been the poorest part of the US. (Like, many didn't have indoor plumbing fr) Many were mountainous coal mining cities.

You have to check out her singing 'I will always love you. It was a personal love letter to her old boss. She had signed a 5 year contract to be on the Porter Wagoner TV show. When the 5 years was up, she wanted to go solo & he kept trying to talk her out of it & just not listening to her. So she went home & wrote it & then sang it to him, to explain her feelings. Whitney's version was for a Diva in a movie & it was a Div performance. Both are stunning, in totally different ways.

She fought hard to have the recording on her albums because it was a necessary topic for “the time” Dolly Parton - Down from Dover
My friend, we have all to remember the people, less fortunate. Sometimes a smile or a gesture is all it takes to enrich someones day. Sometimes you have the opportunity of helping an elderly person by carrying their meager shopping bag and other little things, to ease the load of others. If you are fortunate to be wealthy, you can do more, so many people in our countries need help, if any of us just do a little bit, it summarises to a lot. Be well, love to your child. Belgium? Hey there, homeboy! I left way back in ‘55.
Hey!
You went on an adventure 😃
This is my all time favorite song of Dolly's .. She is our National Treasure.. in the USA.. She's just an amazing person and her songs are written from the heart and her experiences. Dolly says this is her favorite song.
Beautiful song and i hear all great things about Dolly as a person.
There is so much music to her voice.
Amazing voice!
I love me some Dolly! She is the absolute best and as a person she is great. Her current rock cover album is worth checking into.
Chasing Rainbows Museum at Dollywood has a replica of the Coat.
❤️❤️❤️
A real story well told and sang. ❤C
Oh, Dollywood is in Tenessee? Sounds like an awesome place!
Thanks so much for watching !
Thanks for reacting to this great song❤
Such a great song. Thanks for watching.
My favorite Dolly song.
Very good. Might sub. I'm an old man & I like old songs. Your reaction was moving. Relatable.
Amazing song. Thanks for watching! Have a great day
props having seen where the song was headed.
Such A beautiful song! 💖
Ode to Billy Joe is amazing. I also recorded a reaction to Coal Miner's daughter, but its not uploaded yet.
SO HERE YA GO SAEED! 😊DOLLY HAS OVERRRRRRR 3,000 /3K SONGS IN HER CATALOG SO! 😮👍THAT'SSSS INSANE BUD! AND SHE WAS JUST SO DAMNNNNN GOOD!💯

Love Dolly!!
I’ve never been able to hear this song without crying. I clicked on this as I wanted you to hear it but I didn’t want to watch cause I knew I would be bawling. Interesting take from you. I had never considered suicide. Just assumed she had gotten ill and died at home. Thanks for great reactions.
Its a heartbreaking song. I definitely understand not being able to listen to this. Its very heavy.
Thanks so much for being here. Much love!
She is so sweet ❤
I’m 45 now, but still remember listening to this song with my mom who passed when I was 12.
I still to this day call this the patches on my britches song.
🫂🫂❤️❤️❤️
If you like movies, Dolly made this song into a movie, Coat of Many Colors, and also Christmas of Many Colors

Now Dolly is the queen of country. Not because of her vocals or looks... ! But it's her heart and dedication to God. Many of her songs have mentioned God. OR are very inspirational. True Dolly fans follow her. Because of her gospel.. For story telling..? Please react to he's alive.. Then a react to her most recent. With Zach Williams, searching for you.
This song is amazing! Definitely want to explore many more of her songs. Thanks for watching and the recommendations!
Dolly is a treasure.
When it comes to story songs what first comes to mind is The Wreck of The Edmond Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot.
Also favorites of mine are. James Keelaghan - Cold Missouri Waters ua-cam.com/video/Dztj4X3fQps/v-deo.htmlsi=2C0COY7qXOqX4In
Dave Alvin - King of California. ua-cam.com/video/B9N-xsWPaNc/v-deo.htmlsi=nRvJQiE8moybCnsy
Travlin' Soldier by The Chicks - ua-cam.com/video/AbfgxznPmZM/v-deo.htmlsi=MDTzHi31cU9Rl4im.
also the acoustic recording by Cody Johnson - ua-cam.com/video/gOAabd-_rxw/v-deo.htmlsi=h1LO39AsWKyo4xwJ
I reacted to the first one you mentioned ( i did have a few audio issues on that video)
Hope i can check out some of the others at some point. Thanks.
I grew up in southeast Missouri in the Ozark foothills, we didn't have indoor plumbing until I was in 4th grade.
1974
@@Kevin-i6t5i I was at a house once, in 1980, that had no bathroom. They had an outhouse. I was 18 and I tripped out on it. It was in Georgia. Up by the NC/Tennessee state line. North Georgia mtns. I waited till we left and got to a store with a bathroom. 😆
@@Eowyn187 lol, outhouse was all I knew until I started first grade.
The outhouse wasn't much fun in the winter 😳☃️
This whole album has some good songs!
Try Dolly's " Tennessee Mountain Home ".🥰
Thanks for the recommendation!
This is a true story about the coat her mother made for her. She wrote all of her songs.
Incredible song!
Here's a song I wonder if you have ever heard,,,,,the history is deep..............Don McLean - Vincent ( Starry, Starry Night) With Lyrics
OMG!!! such a beautiful song!!!
I have only heard his collaboration with Home Free, but not his original version.
Thanks for sharing some backstory on that. I never knew about that.
Love this song. I think you would enjoy Lorreta Lynn Coal minners daughter.
I recorded my reaction to that song, but its not uploaded yet. Amazing song.
You should listen to her song called Crackerjack. It's another good story telling song about her dog. So get ready to shed a tear.
Will add that one to my list. Thank you!
Saeed, you’ve reacted to Bobby Gentry’s writings of what is considered “Southern Gothic” in Fancy and Ode to Billy Joel.
Dolly wrote a Southern Gothic story you must hear. She fought hard to have the recording on her albums because it was a necessary topic for “the time”
Dolly Parton - Down from Dover
I will add that song to my to do list. Looking forward to hearing it.
Thanks so much!
Elmar from Germany
Beautifully said! Thanks for sharing that.
Much love from Belgium.
You're a good friend. 💞
