She used to be part of a show called the Porter wagner Show. She outgrew it and wanted to do her own thing. She wrote this song to say good bye to Porter
To be clear, Porter and Wagner didn't have a romantic relationship. Her love for him was totally platonic. The "breakup" if you want to call it that, was leaving his TV show to pursue a solo career. She had and has a husband, a contractor named Carl Dean. They've been married and deeply in love since 1966.
A lot of people assume Whitney Houston's version of this song is the original. But Dolly wrote this back in 1973. She wrote it as a farewell to her business partner & mentor Porter Wagoner, expressing her decision to pursue a solo career. Love Dolly's sweet version. Whitney made it into a powerhouse song.
@@richdiddens4059Whitney Houston massacred this beautiful song by completely oversinging it. Ugh. The Dolly and Linda versions were both gorgeous. But they could actually sing, with subtlety and technique.
Dolly is a humanitarian and loves everyone. When her business partner Porter Wagoner went into financial hardship, Dolly bought his entire music portfolio then years later GAVE them back to Porter. That is true friendship and love.
When she was asked if it bothers her that people think someone else wrote this song, she said 'as long as the checks keep rolling in I have no problem with it.' 😂
Besides her talent, her song writing and her famous philanthropy (*), Dolly Parton is also hilarious. She has a ton of great one liners...like, when asked how long it takes to do her hair she says, "I don't know, I'm never there when they do it." (She wears wigs when performing.) (*) - For instance, early in the Covid pandemic, she donated 1 million dollars to help develop a vaccine.
It was Kevin Costner’s idea that Whitney sing Dolly’s song for the movie, The Bodyguard. Whitney was great, but Dolly’s is the one I listen to. It’s so personal, and heartfelt, you know she means every word. My parents used to watch The Porter Wagner Show, and it was so hard for Porter to let her move on. She wrote this in one night, along with her other mega hit Jolene! They were friends, and partners, not romantically involved.
"Dolly Parton's song "I Will Always Love You" was written in 1973 as a farewell to her mentor and business partner, Porter Wagoner, after she decided to pursue a solo career. The song is about the end of a professional relationship, not a romantic breakup, though some of the lyrics are heartbreaking."
Dolly wrote this song to Porter Wagner, whose show she was on. He tried to keep her from leaving, but she wrote this song to explain it to him. He then agreed.
Dolly had #1 hit with this song twice. When it was first released and then again when she sang it in the movie, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with Burt Reynolds. A few other songs to check out: Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, Hard Candy Christmas, Love is like a Butterfly, Working 9 to 5, Rockin' Years, Romeo, Does he Love you?, just a sample.
Her early success was as a duo with Porter Wagner...she wanted to go solo and didn't know how to tell him, so she wrote this song in 3 minutes on a napkin on a tour bus. Dolly said she was driving home one night and heard Whitneys version on the radio (of course she knew Whitney was going to cover it, but hadn't heard it) and she said she pulled over she was so stunned at what Whitney did, and knew then Whitney owned it. Dolly has also said, and she's always been a brilliant business-woman, that when she recorded IWALY she "was able to put some $ in the bank", when Whitney did it she "was able to buy the bank".
always makes me tear up, such a sweet soul. those of us who grew up with Dolly, and this song in particular, always felt that this was Dolly's song and no one elses. i'll admit i was a little upset when i heard someone else was covering it for a major motion picture, but Dolly was so gracious and generous about the entire thing and we ended up with two beautiful versions, one for us old people and one for a new generation.
Dolly is one of the most beautiful people inside and out. I think you would enjoy island's in the stream with Dolly and Kenny Rogers. Great reaction and Peace out ✌️ ☮️ 🙏
Dolly Parton was asked about Whitney having a much bigger hit with this song. Dolly replied, "When I had the hit with this song, I cried all the way to the Bank. When Whitney had the hit, I BOUGHT the bank!"
Everyone (in the South anyway) used to watch Porter Waggoner’s tv show every week. He was the big star back then. Dolly was just a featured singer when she started with him. He had ALL the major country stars and talent on his show every week. My most memorable part of her on his show has to be the Live, between segment commercials (like podcasters now do) where she sold Breeze Detergent. Explaining what prize you would get in the latest boxes of detergent. She always ended with “Remember, You can Only get them in boxes of Breeze!” She’s tried to distance herself from that - but everyone who saw it remembers! You should watch some entire episodes of the Porter Waggoner Show - you will see more big stars including Dolly Parton, plus hit songs (and amazing session musicians) than almost anywhere.
Dolly Parton is an international legend!! All you seem to know is that EVERYBODY loves her....and it's true. (She's like a Betty White!) I'd suggest her live performance of "He's Alive", from the American Music Awards, late 80's---I think? It would make an atheist go to church!
She wrote this song for her friend Porter Wagoner when she was leaving his show which she co-hosted. I saw Dolly give an interview after Whitney sang 'I will always love you' and when asked what she thought of Whitney's version and she said: 'I will always love you is Whitney's song now' Dolly is a class act all the way!
BTW after EmmyLou Harris recorded her song 'For Daddy" she said 'I started a nice little bank account' and after Whitney recorded 'I will always love you' she said 'I bought the bank!! LOL You are entertaining to watch keep it up, man.
Dude, it gets me every time when she does that spoken part. Anyway, Dolly was basically a co-host on the Porter Wagoner show in the early 70s. When she felt like it was time to go do her own thing, Porter didn’t want her to leave.. So that song was basically inspired by that situation.
I live in east tennessee just a few miles from her hometown. Several years ago we had some bad forest fires that decimated a portion of the tourist business in the gatlinburg area. Dolly spent a lot of her own money to help. She also has a program to provide children free books.
Dolly was on the Porter Wagoner TV show under a 5 year contract. When it was up & she wanted to go solo, he kept arguing with her & didn't want her to go. She said he just wouldn't hear what she was feeling so she wrote the song to explain why she had to go. It was a personal letter to a friend, while Whitney's was a Diva performance for her movie about a Diva, in the Bodyguard. She also sang this in a very fun comedy western called 'Best little whorehouse in Texas' with Burt Reynolds. (guess who was the madam? LOL)
Another song that Dolly wrote after 9/11 is a song called “DearGod”. Play the live version with the full orchestra and church choir. It’s magnificent. Dolly is a true American icon.
Someone asked if she hated dumb blond jokes. She replied that they don't bother her, because to paraphrase, "I know I'm not dumb, and I'm also not blonde."
Dolly had decided to leave her mentor, Porter Wagoner, and go out on her own. Porter wasn't happy about it and Dolly wrote this song to let him know how she felt. She had a #1 hit with it twice. Once on initial release and 10 years later off the soundtrack of a movie she starred in with Burt Reynolds ("Best Little Whore House In Texas"). Whitney's cover was an international hit. Dolly joked that she went to the bank on her record of the song and when Whitney recorded it, she bought the bank. Not bad.
Don't you think this song sounds softer, more tender when Dolly Parton sings it? Sincere. It so happened that I first heard this song sung by Dolly. It was in some movie, I don't even remember the name. But I remembered the song very well, I liked it very much. And although Whitney sings this song amazingly, I still like this version better. Dolly sang it with all her heart.
Dolly has written 1000s of songs. She wrote this in one evening to Porter Wagoner, who did not want her to leave his show for a solo career. She is so witty. Most of her siblings are also in the entertainment field.
dolly was in a film in 82 called the best little whorehouse in texas. she played the madam and burt reynolds played the sheriff that she was having a secret affair with. he was forced to close it. dolly sang this to him in the empty enterance hall of the whorehouse.it was emotional. i think that's where i first heard it when it came on uk tv.i knew whitney's was a cover. the bodyguard came out in 92. i think whitney's had too many runs etc that it didn't need but i do like that version cause i introduced my step dad to the movie and that song played at his funeral 7yrs ago. i prefer dolly's version even though i'm not a country fan. cause it doesn't need a big production.she's the og and you can feel that.
Good version but I think her best live version is from 2002 when she appeared on the Swedish TV show Bingolotto. I love the official video of "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" the official vid of "Those Memories of You" with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris in their supergroup Trio. Her first charting single was the bangin "Mule Skinner Blues (Lady Muleskinner) and her first #1 was another great banger "Joshua". There's a youtube vid "Dolly Parton Performs at the Country Music Hall of Fame" honoring Fred Foster. There's several versions of this but the one with that title includes her humerous intro and also the whole performance. Another banger UA-cam vid is "Dolly Parton-Train Train." Filmed live at Austin City Limits and will knock your socks off.
Check out her acting! She did a movie with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin called 9 to 5, for which she also wrote the title song. Even better is "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", which is a musical. She sings this song to Burt Reynolds in the movie, and it went to Number One for her on the charts for the second time.
Elvis wanted to sing this song and Dolly agreed and was very excited but the day before the recording session Elvis Manager called Dolly snd said: you do know that we want 50% of the recording rights. Dolly could not accept this and with a heavy heart declined. Yes, Colonel Parker did make a lot of money of Elvis tsking up to 50% of income for himself, he gambled away most of his millions while Elvis was for ed to work 2 shows a night at the Hilton Las Vegas to be able to pay the many people on his payrol and a greedy ex wife who came back for a second divorce settlement with a deed of trust to Graceland to and forced Elvis to sell 5% of his recording rights up to 73 to pay her of and the rest in installments because he didnt have the money she demanded. Elvis was giving away his money and love all his life just to make people happy and to give back . He came from very poor circumstances . I will always live you was released and was already nr 1 when Elvis wanted to record it. Priscilla and Elvis finalised their divorce 73. Priscilla says He sang this song to her on the day of their divorce… i am not sure about that. i believe the song was released and hit nr 1 after the divorce… maybe someone here knows for sure
I have to confess I only know some of Dolly's hits. 9 to 5, Jolene, this song and my absolute favourite--Islands in the stream with Mr kenny Rogers. I love that song so much! Dolly is amazing!
Well...YT did it again (sigh). Second try... Thank you for reacting to Dolly singing her original version of the song. I love it, and I also love the Whitney Houston version. GOOD STUFF!!! Had you realized that Corey had reacted to a very special version of it, as well? He did Erik Grönwall's very recent version of the Whitney Houston arrangement, which is STUNNING!!! Another song which Dolly helped bring into the limelight a few years back is "God Only Knows." You can find the original version and a BUNCH of other versions of it, on the For King and Country channel. One version is Dolly's special arrangement, that they did WITH her...SUPERB! If/when you check out that song, be sure to read at least a few of the comments. I guarantee you'll find yourself crying. I'd give more info, but...trying not to get a second disappearing act, here (another sigh).
UA-cam is wild!!! Oh I love For King and County! It’s my youngest son’s favorite band and we are actually going to see them in September! I’ll have to check out Erik’s version because I bet he killed it! Hope all is well Linda!
@@setonhillstudios I am very jealous!!! I SO want to be able to go to their concert in Sioux Falls on October 4, but right now I can't afford to get tickets. Judi and I and her next-to-oldest boy went to see Home Free when they were in Watertown (much closer to us), back in 2017. We both would REALLY love going to a For King and Country concert (sigh). I look forward to hearing a good report of your own experience!!! 😀
She once said in an interview that after Whitney Houston made it hit that she loved her version of the song and that it was one of the proudest moments of her live when she heard her sing it on the radio she almost crashed her car 😂
Dolly Parton has written hundreds, if not thousands of songs. She recently released a rock album you should check out. Recommend Pentatonix’s cover of Jolene, featuring Dolly Parton. It’s a Grammy winner.
Wow. Never seen this vid before! I'm not into country that much either, but Dolly is special. More so for her philanthropic work in many recent years. But her comedic side is killer too! Oh, don't forget about her acting career also. I saw an interview with her one time, (I could listen to her talk forever, such a sweet voice), but anyway, she talks about her childhood and her mom asking her one time what she wanted to be when she grows up. Well, there was a lady of the night that worked there in town, and Dolly told her mom that's what she wanted to be when she grew up. Her mom was naturally distraught, I suppose. But Dolly says that she was so pretty with all that make up and big hair, tight clothes, whatever. Adult Dolly said she was dressed trashy and that's what she wanted to do. She said, So now you know why I dress trashy. And my fav line is when she says, "It costs a lot of money to look this trashy" Mic drop! I'm paraphrasing, of course, but I'm not far off. Super classy, dresses trashy and the voice of a southern angel. She is maybe the only person I wish could live forever so every generation can experience her. I love seeing vids of her walking around her amusement park, Dolly World, and talking to everybody, taking pictures, and best of all, hugging children and seeing all their smiles. She is a special lady for sure. Behind closed doors...??? But she hes been married forever, (I'm pretty sure), so she can't be that bad. I don't know any deep dives of her music, shamefully, but I'm here for the ride when the other fam members shoot in requests. 9 To 5 is also a fantastic comedy starring Dolly, Lily Tomlin and 🤮Jane Fonda🤮- working for their male chauvinistic boss, Dabney Coleman. It's 1980 so their is a lot of truth to what the ladies had to endure. Their revenge is the comedic part of the movie. 😂😂 Long live Dolly❤❤
The first time she performed the song live was on The Porter Wagoner Show, with Porter Wagoner there on stage - the song was written as a way to tell him that after years of working with him, she was leaving. My understanding is that he knew nothing about it before she did the song because she had tried but couldn't find any other way to tell him. She had recorded the song before that so he may have already heard the song without knowing she wrote it to him, but on the show, she says directly that this song is written for him. Although the song puts the breakup on herself, I've seen a lot of things written by others that suggest Porter Wagoner was holding her back because he wanted her to be a supporting role in his career and not a star of her own and that she had tried to tell him she was quitting, but he refused to believe it and that was why she ended up doing it the way she did. Now, the only thing I can say absolutely is true, is that she did the song live on Porter Wagoner's show with him on stage and she then left the show. The rest I can not confirm, which is why I say "my understanding" - it is what I have heard from a number of sources over the years but I have no proof that it is correct.
Hey ever hear John Denver? You have to check him out, he’s awesome and had many many hits in the 70’s. Listen to “Sunshine on my shoulder”, but anything by John is great. Such a great voice and story teller
What a great reaction, Steven! One note is, many other reactions to this, the reactor noted something when Jackson says, "We've got Richard Pryor on the video." You didn't react to that. If you are unfamiliar with Richard Pryor (a comedian), do yourself a favor and go down that rabbit hole. 😃🐇🕳
She wrote this song for Porter Wagoner cuz she was working on his show and she wanted to go solo and he didn't want her to go but the only way she could get him to realize that she wanted to go was to write a song for him
We country fans, who grew up with Dolly, prefer Dolly singing this song. We know the story(which you are learning about) behind the song. Plus, Whitney sings at you. Dolly sings to you & with so much emotion that comes from her heart. 0 Dolly had a hit with this song 3x's. Went #1 in 73 & 82. In 95 #3(l think) as a duet with Vince Gill. Porter Wagoner sued Dolly after she left his show. They finally settled out of court & in 1980/81 their last duet album was released. He wouldn't speak to Dolly for many yrs. In the 90's he made up with Dolly. Dolly has written well over 5,000 songs. Like Loretta Lynn, Dolly is a great songwriter. Any song you pick you will like. Here are a few. After leaving Porters show; "Light of a clear blue morning." Stories of her home; "Coat of Many Colors," "Applejack," "My Tennessee Mountain home," "The letter," "Tennessee homesick blues." Beautiful songs; "Joshua" "Love is like a butterfly," Heartbreaking songs that may make you cry; "The bargain store," "Me & little Andy," "Down from Dover," "Just because l'm a woman," "Daddy come & get me." Fun songs; "9 to 5" "Muleskinners blues" "Why'd you come in here lookin' like that?" "Romeo." Religious songs; "The Seeker," "God's coloring book," "Silver & Gold," "HE'S ALIVE" Dolly didn't write this one. But hearing & watching her sing this song will give you chills!!! Ok, l'm done & l'll leave you with a cute joke. What do you call being locked up in a closet with Dolly Parton?? A booby trap😂😅😅
Dolly is Beauty with brains. Oh she has a good voice also. We have been to her dolly Stampede in Branson a few times. Branson is where old performers end up.lol I've always been country. I just like my rock also. You can catch 4 of the best when they performed as The Highwaymen. That would be Johnny Cash Willie Nelson Waylon Jennings Kris Kristofferson. If you haven't, Give a listen to their song The Highwaymen. And Hank Williams JR. has lots of songs. I like his cover of his father's song Kawa - Liga which he recorded in 52 a year before his death. 🚜🤠🐂
Yay! I love your videos, but your country journey is my favorite part of the channel. I would recommend "Jolene" or since you loved Kenny Rogers, them together doing "Island in the Stream".

Writen for Porter Wagoner who discovered her and pit her on his show!
dolly was in a film in 82 called the best little whorehouse in texas.
she played the madam and burt reynolds played the sheriff that she was having a secret affair with.
he was forced to close it.
dolly sang this to him in the empty enterance hall of the whorehouse.it was emotional.
i think that's where i first heard it when it came on uk tv.i knew whitney's was a cover.
the bodyguard came out in 92.
i think whitney's had too many runs etc that it didn't need but i do like that version cause i introduced my step dad to the movie and that song played at his funeral 7yrs ago.
i prefer dolly's version even though i'm not a country fan.
cause it doesn't need a big production.she's the og and you can feel that.
She wrote this song and “Jolene” ON THE SAME DAY!!!
That’s wild!! 😳
I have to say, you are a class act!
@@ahkiv6127 Wow! Means alot! Thanks so much!
I love Dolly Parton.
Like you said : Epic !
She's singing to her mentor,Porter Wagoner. She wanted to leave Porter's show and go out on her own to make her music the way she wanted.
Such a beautiful song! Dolly is so amazing! ❤️
I have to confess I only know some of Dolly's hits. 9 to 5, Jolene, this song and my absolute favourite--Islands in the stream with Mr kenny Rogers. I love that song so much!
Dolly is amazing!
She has written thousands of songs.
She also performs this song in the movie The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, the love interest being a character portrayed by Burt Reynolds.
I do believe Porter wanted her off the show because he knew she was Destin for bigger and better things.
Dolly Parton has written hundreds, if not thousands of songs. She recently released a rock album you should check out.
Recommend Pentatonix’s cover of Jolene, featuring Dolly Parton. It’s a Grammy winner.
She sang it to Burt Reynolds in the movie they starred in..."Best Little Whorehouse In Texas"
Long live Dolly❤❤
This was about all things happening then. That also includes the students killed on the Kent State University campus before this great song came out!
Hey ever hear John Denver? You have to check him out, he’s awesome and had many many hits in the 70’s. Listen to “Sunshine on my shoulder”, but anything by John is great. Such a great voice and story teller
What a great reaction, Steven!
One note is, many other reactions to this, the reactor noted something when Jackson says, "We've got Richard Pryor on the video."
You didn't react to that.
If you are unfamiliar with Richard Pryor (a comedian), do yourself a favor and go down that rabbit hole.
😃🐇🕳
She wrote this song for Porter Wagoner cuz she was working on his show and she wanted to go solo and he didn't want her to go but the only way she could get him to realize that she wanted to go was to write a song for him
Dolly is an Angel!
To her sing that song in the movie that her and Burt Reynolds came out in it was called The Best Little whorehouse in Texa
After leaving Porters show;
"Light of a clear blue morning."
Stories of her home;
"Coat of Many Colors,"
"Applejack,"
"My Tennessee Mountain home,"
"The letter,"
"Tennessee homesick blues."

"Joshua"
"Love is like a butterfly,"
Heartbreaking songs that may make you cry;

"Romeo."
Religious songs;

"HE'S ALIVE" Dolly didn't write this one. But hearing & watching her sing this song will give you chills!!!
Ok, l'm done & l'll leave you with a cute joke.
What do you call being locked up in a closet with Dolly Parton??
A booby trap😂😅😅
I absolutely love Dolly singing this. Such a sweet vibe. You might also check out rock singer Erik Grönwall's version of "I Will Always Love You".
Yes, you really need to listen to Erik's version!
𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗻. I got shivers! ❤
Coat of many colors😊

Awesome! So glad you found the channel and thanks for the sub! 😁
Dolly is Beauty with brains. Oh she has a good voice also.
We have been to her dolly Stampede in Branson a few times. Branson is where old performers end up.lol
I've always been country.
🚜🤠🐂
I actually covered Highwaymen on the channel a while back! Such a great tune!
Yay! I love your videos, but your country journey is my favorite part of the channel. I would recommend "Jolene" or since you loved Kenny Rogers, them together doing "Island in the Stream".
Thanks so much! More to come for sure!
Listen to EVERYTHING written by Dolly but definitely the song Jolene.
