That's funny how you mention the strategy of using one earbud so that you keep the left ear (or just the ear exposed to traffic) unoccupied because I've been doing that somewhat instinctively for whenever I go jogging. I really don't like the idea of sealing off all environmental/ambient sounds around me while I'm doing some sort of physical workout outdoors; I tend to get completely absorbed by the activity and as a result, dangerously oblivious to my surroundings. I like the idea of open headphones but not enough to replace the single earbud use method, especially when you can configure your audio settings to have 100% sounds levels travel thru either side.

  • @TheVerge

Cut for time: ambient mode. It's an option! But I don't like it because it...
    1. Usually creates WAY too much wind noise
    2. I guess I'm paranoid enough that I'd rather just have an open ear than trust an ambient mode from software
Anyway wanted to mention that, thanks for watching! - Dieter

This came to my mind as well. Because I do this with my airpods pro. And that works. No wind noise.
And that surprised me as well. My Sony wh1000xm3 have that issue when there is a lot of wind.
The 2 times I biked with the airpods pro, it was no issue.

Fun fact: the Galaxy Buds Plus actually switches to mono if you put the other bud in the case. That way, you're not really losing half of the sound. Also if you want bonus outside sound in that one ear, you can turn on ambient sound and it works well (so long as it's not on extra high cause you'll be hearing the wind)

I get that for most people living in the city that’s not going to be the solution but I live in the countryside and really love these for riding my bike. If it’s raining you can just stick them in your hood as well. Anyway, just one more option/form factor. Not really a headphone more of a personal speaker, though.

Oh considering the fact that I do Bike 50 miles per day... I use the EarPods wired lightning earphones... It lets the outside sound come in since it doesn't clog up the ear. But at speeds greater than 15 miles per hour, I hear the wind more than the music from the earbuds or traffic! Could someone recommend a better set of buds, I am currently looking at the beats flex and the one ear technique Deiter talks about, but if I could maintain the stereo it would be great!

I really like the Aftershokz Aeropex for work, they are barely noticeable on video calls. And when in the office, you can clearly hear your music, nobody else can at all - you can even have a conversation with someone standing next to you with the music somewhat loud, the other person can't hear the music, you can hear the music *and* the other person.

I agree that he should have at least mention it, but the problem I realised with my own earbuds (Jabra Elite Active 65t) is that while for going on a run this feature is mostly fine (you hear the wind only a little bit amplified and your surroundings are drowned out unless you listen to your audio on a lower level), on a bike it is a whole other story, because the noise that the wind creates by hitting the microphones way faster is unbearable and you can't really enjoy your audio nor pay attention to other surrounding sounds

One change that makes me more comfortable riding with music playing is to have a small mirror on the traffic-side bar end. Glancing at it helps mitigate the surprise when a vehicle comes by too close or too fast. Looks a little dorky but I do a lot of miles and I wouldn't ride without one now!

Pre-COVID daily bike commuter for years. I've tried all sorts of combos and ended up with Aftershokz plus this little fuzzy (dead cat) material wraps on the helmet straps near my ears to cut the wind noise. I could listen to podcasts/books/music and still hear the vehicles, even when going down hill at 30mph. While moving recently, found them again, and tried them again - after some time I got used to them, and I really like them. I’ve got the Samsung beans. It’s a surprising solution for this issue.
The hype of it being noise cancelling is BS, so the price tag is BS.
BUT!! If you get it cheap, it’s a pretty good overall, the sound is pretty good. Turn off any isolation and cos there’s so much sound leak, it’s perfect for this issue without any thing hooking over your ears.
I got mine free and it turned out to be a really good set when u need to hear your surroundings.

The Galaxy Buds+ have a pass-through function that lets you hear some ambient sounds.

As a skiier I have been looking everywhere for something that works as a compromise to be able to allow me to hit the slopes but hear others around me so I don't crash into them. So far the best I have come across is the headpone in one ear trick. Those helemets with the soft pads on the side with the speakers in them provide little prottection from a crash on your side. And I've yet to find a proper full hard helmet (that covers your cheeks) that comes with a speaker inside. I dunno man, the biking world and ski world seem to have similiar issues to products delivering only halfway in our needs. Not one perfect device has yet to be delivered.

I use the AirPod Pros with Transparency mode on. You just learn to be careful with the stems. I got a nice fit, good sound quality and I can hear the world around me.

Conversational review is the best type and Dieter and others on the Verge (BECCA!) excel at this. The best example in a while has to be Nilay doing the 12 pro review. In the beginning he jokingly states that the difference with 4G and 5G is 1 more G and you hear Becca yell "That's not how it works!" and Nilay replies right back to the camera "That's not how it works.".

The sound quality of open headphones cannot match that of noise cancelling headphones. But they are safer, I think safety is more important. I think ear-hanging headphones have better fit because they have three support points: temples, auricles, and hindbrain.,they should be the best. I am currently using the Wissonly Hi Runner, which has a good fit, good sound quality, good waterproof (IPX8) and has MP3 mode (with 32GB storage)

why cant you switch the lenses in the Bose Frames

The Bose might be what I choose for running, but my concerns are with my sunglasses and that they only have an IPx4 rating. No sport oriented headphone should be less than IPx6. Maybe I sweat more than the average person, but it's a huge oversight for me. I can deal with the odd charger. I've been full wireless since about 2015, so I'm hesitant to get Aftershocks. I've used several Jaybird products with a wire behind my head, and it bounces with every step and at the gym it gets caught on benches. Since I'd only use them for running in a city or crowded environment, the wire on the Aftershocks might not be an issue as long as it doesn't bounce constantly.

Dieter you're so trendy on your gravel bike riding singletrack. I like my jabra 75t buds that get me through most rides without needing a recharge. I wish someone would make a headphones that deals with wind noise in the mic on calls!

Livall also has helmets with speakers, intercom, and blinky lights. I wonder how they fare in comparison to the helmet in the review, but I guess they’re probably similar

While at least one AirPod would invariably fall out of an ear, even without a bike or helmet, I find the AirPods Pro sticks even while riding. Like 5,000 miles worth. Their variable sized soft tips work. Work well. One ear at a time. I listen to books while riding so can also hear traffic.
