  • The Southern Residents have been absent from their traditional inland Salish Sea social & hunting grounds for the previous 8 weeks. Today members of J pod, K pod & L87 "Onyx" were observed along with the newest member, 6-week old J56 with mom J31. Facing extinction they are suffering a critical food shortage and habitat degradation. There are only 76* remaining members. Filmed from shore. (My apologies ~ poor image quality through the first half of the video) *Update 8-6-19 CWR reported three adult orca missing and presumed dead reducing the population to just 73 individuals. Missing are J17 a 42-year-old female, K25 a 28-year-old male and L84 a 29 year old male.

Did you hear about the new calf born, L124.

Yes I did, born to L77. The Center for Whale Research observed L124 when only a few weeks old and said the calf was healthy and energetic. Thank you for your comment, All Star :)

You’re welcome! Let’s hope L124 is able to survive to adulthood because there are only 74 to 76 Southern Resident orcas left.

Along with the vaquita, they are the cetacean I focus on the most.

@@allstarpterosaur850 Yesterday, the Center for Whale Research reported that 3 Southern Resident Orcas are missing and presumed dead. The missing whales are J17 Princess Angeline, K25 Scoter and L84 Nyssa. This reduces the Southern Resident Orca population to 73 individuals. I know. Poor things. They’re the most endangered population of orcas on earth.

It sure is. Thought you were lost. The orcas are wonderful. It must be a joy to see them coming home. Hope all is well in your life. Things are good with me, but not too much bird cam watching as I have tons of birds at my home that I love watching. Real life as opposed to a webcam. Not many wild owl cams any more (unless they take over an eagle nest with a cam). Had a feeling it was you because I think I remember videos you posted on the Raptor Resource Project.

I'm happy to hear you are well and observing wildlife around you. We shared some good times at Raptor Resource- thanks so much for reaching out. All my best.
