    There’s a part very early in the book where Limmy describes a childhood memory.
    Two kids one after the other walking past a window smile and wave at the adults inside. The adults smile and wave back both times. Kid Limmy thinks this is great, it made him happy to see, so Limmy walks up and smiles and waves. The adults expression drops and they stop waving.
    Limmy feels like there must be something inherently wrong with him that he didn’t deserve this same affection, as a bit of a loner and feeling like a square peg on top of this he carries this through his early life and always has a feeling that he might be a bit of a freak, inferior or made wrong in some way.
    In hindsight Limmy realises the adults were probably just the parents of the kids and didn’t know Limmy assumed he was waving at someone behind them, after all why would a kid wave at someone else’s parents.
    Now a father, Limmy waves to his son when he drops him off at school, and sometimes he sees that other kids are waving and smiling in his direction (probably at their parents).
    Everytime, even after his son turns around and walks towards school, he carries on his smile and wave a few seconds longer just in case a kid is waving at him by mistake, just in case there’s a kid like Limmy in that crowd and he wouldn’t want them to ever feel the hurt that he felt, he waves longer so that kid knows they’re okay just the way that they are, that they matter…
    And these classist, ignorant, emotionally limited, misanthropic scumbags say there’s nothing in the book they can empathise with or find any sympathy with Limmy.

      Lloyd Cole is even aware of his own incompetence when he asks "should I go and look at youtube now so I can read this book better" the answer to that as a book reviewer is yes. Then goes on to say "As a book it should be able to stand on its own legs", which would be true if it weren't a biography and was for instance, Harry Potter.

I think lots of limmys comedy is class conscious and he can allow us to laugh at the degradation some of us have faced. They don't get it, and they don't get how our environment can mould our our perception. Limmy should have been inspired by them not liking it. They won't fully understand the nuances of the sketches either. They should have reviewed a book by Wil Self instead.

    To dismiss his autobiography in such a manner is frankly obnoxious. Plenty of other people write autobiographies "because they can"... and why shouldn't they?
    Just because Limmy's memoirs are of a poor, working class Glaswegian mans struggle with mental health issues, alcohol and drug addiction and feelings of inadequacy don't make it any less interesting than a story of debauchery, privilege and self indulgence like many other autobiographies. If anything it makes it more real. What Lloyd Bellend effectively is saying is that if your life is too mundane to peak his interest then you shouldn't document any of it. Well bollocks to him...
    Don't worry Limmy, your book was not meant for pretentious dickheads like them because they cannot empathise with your background or life struggles. I'm sure to people who can though, such as myself, your book is an excellent depiction. All the best big man!

    Love how they'd rather assess your intelligence and character than to actually comment on the book itself. If you only read books if you like the main character or author then you must have a boring bookshelf. Besides people who rant about how they learnt how to become better people as opposed to someone else are almost always completely unaware of the same negative traits in themselves. Sometimes you can't change things about yourself, but you can learn how to handle them but you can't always destroy them completely.

    I write under a pen name. I have written about 9 novels with hundreds of reviews. Most of them are 5 stars, but it's the 1 star reviews that wreck me every time. Especially when they are utter nonsense - like the tripe those three buffoons are spouting about Limmy's book. I don't mind valid criticism. In fact, I welcome it, but some people just go out of their way to be nasty.
    My books are fiction and I write under a pen name, but even then the spiteful reviews hurt deeply. Sometimes I can't write for weeks after reading one. With these people speaking about him in person and about a book he wrote about himself, I bet Limmy will be deeply hurt by those horrible people.

  • @ag-bf3ty
    @ag-bf3ty 3 роки тому +6

    This review, and the depth to which they simply don't get it, reminds me of the music video for Bitter Sweet Symphony. These classist morons would watch that music video thinking "Why is the singer pushing all those pedestrians out the way like they're not there??? That's not very likeable!!! I can't empathise with that!!!" Even though the whole point of the song is symbolic, and it means to stop trying to please others, or fit into the box people try to put you in. Be an honest person, and live life for yourself, be yourself, not who others wish you to be. etc. If you're sick of your job, look for a new job or career. If you're a victim of peer pressure, stop letting people influence you. If you're gay or trans or whatever, come out the closet rather than conform to how bigots wish you to be. And that symbolism, and deeper meaning... of pushing people out the way as you walk through life, is what gives you empathy for the singer in that music video, because those people symbolise all the obstacles of his happiness, and pursuit of a meaningful life. And that is what Limmy has done with his book too. It's not a book written for other people, it's a book written for Limmy. And others can take it or leave it, rather than musing about their own personal approval or disapproval his character (as if anyone should give a f---). He's not asking to be liked, he's just being happy and honest, and is living the life he wants to live. There's a difference between making others happy, and being happy yourself. And comedians especially are acutely aware of the distinction as some have famously suffered with depression.
    And tbh, Limmy being an honest, genuine person, to me, makes him a very likeable person too, since its an enviable quality. Shame that's missed on these classist, smooth-brained toffs.
