I do hope you enjoy this comparison tutorial on "To Underpaint or Not to underpaint THAT IS THE QUESTION? I would love to know which one you prefer, is this something you would like to have a go at yourself? Let me know :-). Also Guys I forgot to mention I use Zest-It Products because they are NON-TOXIC AND NON-FLAMMABLE - they also have no nasty smells!

I have never been to art school and all of my endeavors have been based on the tutorials available on UA-cam. This video has explained succinctly the importance of doing an underpainting. I have done watercolor, oil pastel and acrylic. Now I am venturing into oil paints and this has to be one of the most useful videos in terms of technical content for a beginner like me. Thank you so much.

As a new painter, this demonstration was immensely valuable for demonstrating how to apply an under-painting and the reason why an under-painting is valuable. The difference between the two paintings is striking.

I know some artists don’t like doing an underpainting because they feel the colours are more vibrant when painted straight on a white canvas and you can see that’s true here. I think underpaintings lend well for some paintings and not so much for others. It all depends on what you’re painting! I do them sometimes and not at other times 😌 great video!

Absolutely. It’s great to see this comparison so people can decide. I like to mix things up so do different techniques BUT I do always come back to underpainting for pets/portrait & still life I just love the look. Thanks for commenting and glad you enjoyed it.

Some artists use both methods in their painting but I do think you get more texture and transparency in paintings with an under painting.

Your under painting version is much more beautiful but I also feel that you favored it throughout the process. There are artist like David Leffel, Jeff Legg, Sherry McGraw and so many others that paint in a beautiful way and achieve spectacular results without going through the under painting process. That is one of the wonderful things about art, painting, we all do it our own way and hopefully find a way to achieve our goal and vision.

      Tim,
You talk about "going through the underpainting process" as if it were onerous. It is easier, largely separating considerations of value and colour and the results can be truly beautiful. It also saves on expensive pigments and achieves a beautiful deep glowing colour.
I am about to tackle to tackle my version of Klimt's Woman in Gold with acrylic underpainting, size 24x36 inches, substituting my wife's face (because she asked me) in indirect method with oil glazes.
The relief swirls will be done in acrylic from a syringe and needle of the type used to refill ink cartridges before overpainting with metallic gold. Have done that before - it works. The same method can be used for jewels and jewellery.
Have yet to decide upon acrylic/oil for the rest of the painting. Acrylic might be easier but oils would give a better painting.

Tonal values are so important that they can make or break a painting. I love your underpainting techniques and tools, to establish tonal values. I like both images, and would like to try both in a landscape, where I will try the underpainting areas in the foreground sections for "body", and no underpainting in the far background aspects, where tonal values are much less apparent/evident, (more flat, lighter and less detailed) to enhance a sense of depth/distance.
Thanks so much, I loved this. The oiling out with glazing is awesome to know about.

What a great way to show and teach the underpainting method. You convinced me that this is how artists I know get the classical look of the masters. I know it is never too late to learn. I am still working on watercolor painting and enjoy that medium, but this has convinced me to watch you, learn and hopefully will get the courage to expirence oil painting with underpainting. Thank you so much for the enlightment. Nancy L, Maine USA

I like watercolor underpinning, than acrylic and finally water mixable oil. I get all the strength of these mediums.
Canvas must be prepped w home-made watercolor ground. Watercolor layer, fix it. Than mid range colors w acrylic first lean w watermixable oil medium and water mix1 to 10.1 part medium, 10 part water.Golden acrylic play beautifully with this mix. Dries within hours to a day.
And finally, the wamo oil paint. Some parts just medium over the watercolor or acrylic layers.
The final result is a truly deep 3D painting.
I know this is lots of work, but the result is well worth it.

Both versions are splendid! The visible difference is in the mood that underpainting makes. If trying to imitate the old master's style, the underpainting seems more appropriate. If we want a more modern or faster approach, the bright clear colors ( colours) of the direct method is beautiful too.

Wow! This is such a great exercise. I love the idea of seeing the going-that-extra-mile-in-the-preparation-stages manifesting in such an artistically rich way. Yes, your pear without the underpainting is beautiful. But your pear with the underpainting is luscious and almost holy. There is an unspoken connection, comfort and peace than comes to the soul when it's touched by the brilliance of an artist's full circle process. I am amazed by the difference the underpainting makes. I also love that you use such thin layers - a very appealing approach for me. I am a pastel painter just venturing in to oils and always use very thin layers to build up the painting. In fact, yesterday I made my first oil painting - very rudimentary - so I can't wait to find an approach that works for me.

I love both paintings. I suppose by seeing them in isolation, one would never be able to say which is better. Even when comparing them it will take a while to actually decide which is better.
    Thank you for sharing ❤

You are welcome. There’s no right or wrong you are correct it’s all personal interpretation. I do think underpainting in general helps beginners and breaks the process down

Thank you for this lesson. I have never used underpainting but I will now in the next one. I am 85 years old and my whole life worked as an free lance illustrator with Acryl and now for 15 years with oil mainly portraits. I had several exhibitions with success. Greetings from Hungary. Definitely see the strength of the value of the underpainting. I actually love using an underpainting and feel it adds to the richness and depth of the painting, which you so aptly demonstrated here. Well done 🙂
