Hey Vern, I’ve been using Garmin products for years. I still don’t understand why anyone use routes over tracks. As you mention in the video you can be re routed by the device as soon as you are off track. Sending you in god knows what direction and for possibly an unknown distance. All I want to do is follow and then get back to my pre determined track if I happen to veer off. BTW I’ve made the switch to DMD2 and it has a great feature that will countdown k’s till certain waypoints that are on track without having be a route.. Fuel / Lunch etc.
I prefer a route because it gives me options and more information to make decisions, like skipping parts to make camp by sunset. I load both onto the device so the track will still be visible on the screen if the route deviates from the plan. A few times, we've reached a blocked path, and even though we still return to the track, I need to find the detour, which the route will do. ETA via Waypoints on Track sounds like the best of both worlds.
Hi mate, i noticed your link to the Garmin InReach Mini 2 is for the Germany amazon store. any issues using that in Aus. I figure they would be the same globally.
Try this link instead: amzn.to/4ftmK5G The availability of those can change from time to time, but yes, they are the same globally. I have checked the part/model number in the past.
It's all too hard for me. I hate the trial and error thing when it comes to this stuff. I am one of those guys that prefers to attend classes which the PC/Garmin in front of you that show and work through with you the step by step process (yes, spoon feeds me) from sitting in front of your PC, planning the ride from start to the end, how to load the track into the device, bla, bla bla. How to amend the ride on the device when on the trail, working through lots of examples covering a number of situations. Of course, not just for the Xt2 but also how to do it on the XT. As I said, I hate the trial and error trying on this devices like this.
I totally get what you mean. It's a lot to learn, and it took me a while to understand what I know now, which is only so much. My suggestion, if I may, would be to take more of a Kaizen approach. Don't try to understand it all, but instead, start with the basics and build on them. Start with a couple of waypoints, test ride with that, then try a simple route and build on complexity as you learn more. I use mine even on trips where I know where I'm going, so I'm not trying to understand the system and work out where I'm going; I can just comprehend the system. Less trial and error, more Kaizen.
That’s cool 👍
You're cool! 😜
