CVT's whole reason for being is twofold: 1) Cheaper and easier to manufacture than an automatic, and 2) Marginally better results in EPA fuel mileage testing. The early high failure rate was just a bonus for them, they don't care as long as they outlast the warranty.

The problem with CVT transmissions is they require maintenance every 30k to 40k miles and don’t tolerate being neglected. I seen them go over 240k from time to time on a Nissan Murano, if you take care of them replace the filters as well and also intercooler with radiator as those love to break and leak which found cause them to fail prematurely. Yes seen and replaced way to many including on even the Nissan Altima I bought off someone that failed at 180k. So had to buy a used junkyard one that was still good and took the engine as well since under 75k miles rebuilt the CVT completely costing another 1k in parts and hopefully it last a while.

They are smooth and the one thing I do like is that it allows the motor to rev at a low RPM on the highway. I do make sure to do the fluid every 50,000 kms. I can understand them in a cheap commuter car but nothing else. Nissan puts it in way too many of their vehicles in the lineup.

And I would never use those `universal CVT fluids` . For example, Nissans newer JF015 cvts use the NS3 fluid which are thinner than the old NS2. Nissan warns to never put an NS2 in the newer JF015, so how come a fluid specify that it serves both NS2 and NS3 and also all other fluid specifications from the market? I live in Brazil and I drive a Sentra since 2008, my current one is a 2016 with only 50k miles and the CVT is still working like new. I do fluid changes at every 30k\40k miles always using the same factory original NS3 only, NEVER those universal fluids. People are using wrong fluids and are blaming the CVT transmissions IMHO.

This is gonna be long but hopefully worth it.
Back in the 90s, I'd deliver pizzas for some extra money. One of the drivers I worked with shared an apartment with two other guys, all of whom delivered for different pizza chains. One night they were all off shift and a few of us were hanging out in the apartment. After a while, we got hungry & decided to order some pizza from Dominos so one of the guys could use their employee discount.
The guy who worked for Domino's had worked earlier and still had his shirt on. The apartment was in a different store's delivery zone so when the pizzas arrived, he was the one who opened the door in case the driver had any instructions to verify he really was a Domino's employee.
The driver was immediately confused. In that moment the off duty driver decided to have a little fun.
    "What took you so long?"
The driver went straight into "deer in headlights" mode. He managed to get "wha?" out of his mouth and little else.
"These people have been waiting nearly 3 hours for these! Your manager thinks you've either been abducted by aliens or something! You better hope that happens on the way back to the store because when I get there your Manager and I are gonna drill you how to read a goddamn map until your nickname becomes Magellan!"
With that, the off duty driver takes the pizzas from the driver and slams the door. All of us completely lose it. Our guy opens the door again to catch the driver and give him a good tip but the driver was apparently related to Barry Allen because he was already behind the wheel of his hooptie and pulling away from the curb. He tries to run and stop him but the driver thought he was seeing management coming at him for a second go so he floored it.
By now, most of us are having trouble breathing. Domino's dude pulls himself together after a couple of minutes and calls the manager of the store the driver delivered from to let him know what was going on. I've only heard second hand what happened when the driver got back to the store but apparently the manager decided to have a little fun with him too. We each threw $10 into the hat to tip the guy so it turned out to be the best shift he'd ever worked.
After about 20 minutes, everything was finally settling down until one of the other roommates came out of his room wearing his work shirt.
"So, what do we want from the Hut?"
There's more but I'll leave it there.

I would urge everyone on here to try and give a Honda with a CVT a test drive, you will not be disappointed. Car reviews that have tested the civic with CVT could not believe how well it drove thinking it was going to be crap when getting into the car the first time. My civic is very fun to drive, CVT has fake shift points and paired with the turbo engine it's great.

So as i love my pontiac Aztek i fixed it and to find out GM put faulty seleniod in there trans to fail at 120 to 150 thousand miles its a shame what these dealers do to us. But hey great video watched till end. Keep up the great vids. Later!

I used to use multi-brand ATF until I learned that the manufacturers of these actually design the Automatic transmissions and CVTs to the fluid they have, not the other way around.

@@carlbernard4197 I have seen to many people that actually periodically change their fluid with non oem fluid and they actually have high millage cvt transmissions with no issues. I am not sure if I am buying that must use oem fluid in the case of CVT's. Nissan even says that there are other fluid equivalents that you can use but they recommend theirs. You can use non oem fluid in Nissan cars and not void the warranty. I think it matters more that you do timely oil changes more than the brand of fluid that you use.

Should've also cleaned the valve body/solenoids and the tiny strainer filters on that while in there too. Those cause a restriction even with the new fluid and that's in addition to the two transmission filters you have replaced/mentioned. It's like the tiny strainer filters for the VTEC on some hondas. That would further alleviate the issue with these transmissions. As you said... Off to a great start at least(or not so great). 😢
In addition, some people do add a external cooler to the transmission cooler since these transmissions do run hot by design. How much that can additionally help? Probably good for hotter climates perhaps.

Scotty Kilmer did a video about the CVT. According to him the only ones that work are Honda and Toyota's. The one that (once again according to Scotty) is most produced for Nissan, Ford etc is the Jatco. Randy you are a pioneer in actually buying a worn CVT. Very much enjoyed the seal substitution, brake cleaning the pan and flushing it. Except what I'm thinking is that the CVT belts are slipping which results in those chugs it makes. Car Wizard does however suggest frequent fluid changes however if belts are skipping gears that's not good.
Much better to stick with something that works.

Hey Randy. I just finished the video. I have a Nissan with almost the exact same driveablilty issues and the P0965 code. Once it stopped going on me I limped it back home and parked it. I have done a lot of research on rebuilding the transmission. The transmission is shared with a Versa and I believe the Spark, I saw it mentioned some of the 3rd party parts catalogues. The transmission is question is the RE0F11A aka JF015E, please confirm but according to the Internet it is the same. Nissan has a TSB for it with a flow chart and everything, even color pictures. So far nothing you have done, while making a lot of common sense and can't hurt, is a right step in the repair process according to the TSB. If the TSB in question applies the fix is some what "simple". You would need to at least change the valve body and depending on the state of the variator sub assembly you may need to replace that too. Between the two unless the input shaft bearing is fubared I am having trouble believing that It couldn't be fixed. I can understand if you don't want to put the money in on replacing the assembly because it costs almost as much as you said you spent on the whole car. I highly recommend using the part numbers in the TSB because the repair kits can come out cheaper than the individual parts. The link for the TSB is static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/MC-10109251-9999.pdf I also sent you a version of this message on IG. I hope this is able to help. I want to see this car running because I believe it can be fixed.

14:30 The check engine light was on at the start, the belt screaming is because your battery is weak and the alternator is taking a lot of power (and maybe the belt is a bit old/not tight enought), the Fan can be ON because of a bad sensor (ssometimes, when the engine see a bad sensor it automatically turn on the fan in case of an overheat) the weak battery can have caused a default too

An old employer of mine had a 2016 Versa Note as a work vehicle. It had no power so the employees thrashed it to hell and back trying to go as fast as possible. Went through multiple sets of tires and brakes, and got wrecked several times. Interior was trashed. That poor car got treated like poop. It was given to that office because they had wrecked two previous cars and were not trusted with anything better. It was hilarious.

My little sister had a Honda Civic EX coupe customized with one of those Crappy Variable Transmissions that did the same damn thing as your Dominos is doing. I took the Honda to a place called Run Right Transmissions and did anything but that. They had the car over a month and when i went to pick it up i saw that all they did was paint the trans battle ship gray and was bucking the same. Shop guy asks me," what do you drive" i told him I drive a Chrysler, he says to me " there's your problem your not used to driving a cvt car." Long story short i took it to the local Honda dealership where they confirmed the trans problem and replaced it with a brand new one. $3000 later that little Honda was boogie n down the road. Unfortunately after 7 months the car was stolen from my little sis college campus & found in Camden NJ completely stripped new trans and all😭

Okay, Randy, not meaning to backseat channel produce here but having worked in my Dad's service station garage since 1970, making TV shows since 1979, & currently shooting video of my old 944 to upload to YT, I have a question for you and nearly every other auto repair UA-camr I've watched: why do I never see anyone do a quick search online or crack a manual? I see a lot of guessing and not all of it is just for the camera. You know your stuff and we all tend to fall back on what we think we know rather than make sure when we're turning the wrench but something that network legal departments pounded into us when making any kind of content like this is to make sure any repairs, etc that you show are accurate and mention where the info came from. If it's something where you're guessing or there's no factory information available we had to be sure to explain how we got to that solution. The reason is because if somebody watched what we did and did the same thing but got entirely different results, particularly if it caused some kind of injury to people or property, we could be held liable.
I'm not saying you're doing anything wrong. I love watching your stuff and you're one of people who helped me decide to start producing material for YT. But it is something I've noticed from a majority of automotive UA-camrs.
