      Why are we still enslaved to the mental concept of 'Full-Frame'? Most people taking up the hobby these days with digital kit may never have used film, and so won't actually know where the history of 'full-frame' came from (36x24mm 35mm film frame).
      And lenses.... We have for example, a 12mm lens, and then have to 'convert' it to a 35mm equivalent focal length which will vary, depending on the format it's used on.

      I think that Sony A7C, A7CII and A7CR is the most compact Cameras for what you get, the Sigma fp and fpL without an EVF is only a tiny bit smaller than the Sony Cameras which have EVF, for the Sony system there is so many Lenses to choose from and play with that it is a joy.

      Hi Emily, I really enjoyed your video. This camera is a real contender for me, as is the Sony A7c and Fujifilm xe4, and the high, second-hand prices for these cameras bear testament to the interest in small, rangefinder-style cameras. If the FPL had a hotshoe and an EVF that matched is size, maybe in the same wat that Leica does it, I'd be in.

    I owned one for a while. Traded it in because despite it's compact design, great buttons and the menu. The EVF cost £600. If just shooting primes fine. Sigma do a great series of compact quality primes. But the telephoto is large and comparatively heavy. So the weight of the telephoto lenses, lack of built-in EVF, no articulating screen and no IBIS were the key reasons for me parting with it. I went back to Olympus and haven't regretted my decision for one moment.

      I agree MFT needs both a G9mk2 or OM1 and a small camera like GX9 OM10
      First one being in good Balance with telel enses like PL 200mm2.8 the 100-400 etc...
      The camera bodies aren't that small but the lenses are....
      Especially compared to the HUGH and expensive Full Frame lenses
      (Agree there are Compromises but that is with every system)
      Latter for being small and conspicuous essy to sneak in a small bag with some primes....
      So no offence (not meant personally) but in politics there's a saying:
      "It's the economy stupid!"
      In the camera world one could say:

  • @thedelicatecook2

    Just a note about the crop “genuinely not losing quality”, you are effectively using a smaller sensor when cropping, and smaller sensors, by definition, don’t have the same performance (noise ratio, definition). But you also are using the center part of the lens which is the sharpest part, that counter acts the loss.
    I know I am nitpicking but it took me a while to understand this.
    And as you say, it will still give a perfectly good image, the main downside being loss of resolution.
    Great video it made me reconsider the sigma bodies.

    Niiice! I have the original fp (24 megapixels) and love it for adapting vintage lenses.
    Both fp and fp L have an INCREDIBLE feature for correcting any color distortion from adapted glass, which can happen on a digital camera especially with old super-wide lenses and especially especially with old super-wide rangefinder lenses since rangefinders also lack mirrors and the lenses sit closer to the sensor which is what causes color casts. What you do with the fp is take a photo of an all white wall or something and then save it to the settings and then apply it to your current lens… and the fp will output corrected RAWS! No other camera does this. It totally takes away color casting from my antique Russar 20mm LTM lens.
    The fp also has great features for manual focusing, focus peaking and an excellent punch in zoom. And the sensor is delicious. (I’m sure the 61mp one is also great but I don’t need it!)
    BTW Sigma sells a tiny grip for the fp that is transformative. It doesn’t make it any bigger.

    Nice overview! I’ve often thought the same…another example is the original A7C at roughly 500 grams, small, weather sealed and if you buy small full frame lenses you can stay around the same as MFT; that changes once you start looking at med zooms and above. Not great IBIS though. So maybe not the best choice for weight and size if birding is your thing. And if you stay with a crop; Sony APSC can pretty much meet or beat many new MFT for size and weight at the shorter end. Stabilization not quite as good however and not quite as weatherproof perhaps. I would love for MFT to produce some more small bodies…I would say OM5 size max or smaller.

    I think it's great that Sigma pursue their own path in camera design, rather than following the herd, but the downside is that this is a very niche product. If you happen to live in that niche (like Mike Johnston) or can afford the Sigma as a second or third camera, great. For most of us though, there are more appropriate choices for a small camera. I do think that we are lucky to have so many amazing camera options these days and this Sigma definitely brings something unique to the party.

    I'm a bigger guy and find something like the OM-1, G9, or OM-5 small enough. Since I like a bigger grip and use longer lenses mostly, I like the balance still more than if I had a small FF body and their long lenses. Even the pro and PL super telephoto lenses aren't bigger than the biggest pro FF lenses (most importantly, they're still more in reach price wise). But I definitely understand for people in other genres the demand for smaller bodies. I think they will come if you have small lenses like the PL 9mm or OM 20 1.4 pro still coming out.

    It looks awesome. With the success of the Ricoh GR series it’s clear that people want smaller cameras with high quality images. For me, the Ricoh lowlight at 2.8 just isn’t competing with full frame low light images at f2 or lower, but I still love it. This sigma is relatively affordable with 61mp and full frame, it’s definitely tempting! I do miss having a viewfinder though. I know it makes the camera smaller but the experience is definitely more fun.

    It’s not my only camera, but I do use it quite often for stills with Leica and Voigtlander glass. I have the EVF and use it about half the time mostly for model shots where focus is desired. If I want to point-and-shoot it, I tend to go for my Leica SL 16-35 with auto-focus or my Voigtlander 10mm and set it to f/8 and then everything is in focus. I’ve gotten some wicked results from the fp. It’s easy enough to shoot with a small M lens or a 90-280 or even a 120 tilt-shift lens. It’s a nice camera to pack away in a bag with another camera like when I don’t want to change lenses or where I’m also shooting film. Despite its limitations with the lack of a shutter, the camera is very capable with a beautiful output. Lastly, it’s diminutive size is great for not being noticed.

    The Sigma FP L doesn't have electronic image stabilization in Stills mode but the regular FP can use EIS in both cine/stills.
    Its stated in the FP L manual that its only available in cine mode:
    "Applicable only when shooting movies with MOV 59.94p or less".
    There's also an icon that's displayed when its enabled.

    A cropped image doesn't give you the perspective you would have with the equivalent focal lenght lens. Example if a 50mm lens once cropped give you a 100mm ....well it doesn't give you the perspective of a 100mm lens, which is the purpose to use one in the first place. Crop is fashion at the moment but the real meaning is "reframe". I know, even Leica sell the idea with its new Q3 but it is a lie or a scam, pick your choice. I mention this because I am quite sick to see that everywhere now, but also because the rest of your video is well done and I appreciate it.

    • @sumgi1888
      @sumgi1888 Рік тому +1

      Came here to say exactly this, cropping absolutely does not equal the same thing as changing focal length and nothing you can do to it in software can change that.

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 5 місяців тому

      Exactly, you buy a 61M camera and degrade it to an APSC or 1” camera with cropping. Noise performance and DoF degrades along with cropping. For image quality megapixels are not as significant as the total amount of light captured for a photo, cropped or uncropped.

    • @alangauld6079
      @alangauld6079 Місяць тому

      The perspective will be identical because perspective does not depend on focal length but on distance from the subject and field of view. So a cropped image will have exactly the same perspective as a shot with a longer lens,. What will be different is depth of field, which is why some people claim that MFT lenses are two stops darker than their FF equivalents. They aren't darker but they do have two stops worth extra DoF. But that does not affect perspective.

    You CAN get a smaller set up, it would be the Light Lens Lab 35mm f2 collapsible lens which protrudes about a centimeter with a M Mount adapter. Only caveat is that the collapsing mechanism necessitates that you need to use 2 hands sometimes to change aperature.
    Also, yes the EVF is 600 quid but you can mount an LCD loupe (mine's collapsible - you're sensing a theme here...) onto a detachable 3d printed bracket for around £20.
    I sometime think about selling my FPL and moving on because of the rolling shutter. I can live without IBIS, the 1/15th second flash sync (you forgot to mention) and the ocassional banding issues but the rolling shutter is a killer, especialy if you use the crop modes and telephoto lenses. But then again, I can't think of another camera I would rather switch to which would be as much fun. Small tip, get the official grip, well built and gives a lot of additional, well, grip. Without adding much to the overall form factor

    Yes, we do. Sensor size has implications on many things with most important to me being the size of the lenses and the depth of field. Yes depth is more often important than shallowness and that explains why phones very often give more acceptable close-ups/macro than large sensors and why smaller sensors can show same or less noise by using a larger aperture whilst achieving same depth of field. It seems that the only undisputed advantage is the dynamic range, provided the two sensor compared have same pixel count. The larger will always win. (simplified, but even that is not a linear function, there is actually an optimum pixel size, beyond which the law of diminishing returns kicks in.)

    Been using MFT Lumix Leica since the GX1 came out. Sigma and FujiFilm have always attracted me with their special features and weirdness. This camera is probably the most attractive beast I've seen, however, the reasonable quality auto-focus detroys its video prospects alone (for me / manual focus guys should be fine), but also it's lack of V-Log means it's not compatible with other L Mount video sessions as this creates more post production work (the enemy of Videography).
    I am truly amazed by its strategy of crop mode and how this maintains the quality of the system, my only concern is that this would bring one into the realm of more expensive glass over time...($$$$). I think Ill stick to my MFT system as travel with 1 camera, 4 small prime lenses is still very good (9mm, 15mm, 42.5mm f1.7, 75mm).
    Once there is an update with mechanical shutter, and V-Log I may well jump ship...

    Nice review, its hard to explain how simple and effective the menus are (very un sony like), but you forgot to mention its weather sealed as well. Although the screen does not flip, its mounted away from the body slightly and those grills are for cooling hense its long recording time give or take the small battery. I have an fpL for stills and a fp for street and video. fp has no PD AF unlike the fpL, but its low light high ISO seems even better with quicker sensor read out.

    I follow Huw Alban's channel where he moved from an EM1 to the FPL. For a purely landscape shooter it works well. But if you take a variety of genres I think a regular MFT body works better. But if I had the cash for an extra camera I'd buy an FPL and some primes in a heartbeat. I played with one at the Photo show in Birminham when it first came out. Lovely, but very niche. One other feature you didn't mention is its low ISO range. You can set ISO to as low as 6! ie a built in 4-stop ND filter ...

    In the 'lens off' views, the sensor appears quite close to the lens throat... I know it's mirrorless and all that, but in a film camera, the distance between focal point and film was much greater, leading to a less acute angle of light striking the film, and better use of the image circle...

    • @MSUTri
      @MSUTri 10 місяців тому

      The reduced mount flange distance on L mount only gives flexibility in lens design - it doesn't mandate a higher ray angle or closer lens elements. Many old film non-retrofocus wideangle lenses have rear lens elements that stick inwards past the mount flange, almost touching the film in some cases.
      In fact, film is much less sensitive to high ray angles, so those older non-retrofocus wideangle lenses don't always perform as well in the corners on digital sensors as they did on film. The stack height of the sensor and the microlenses on it have an impact on how well the lenses work. Modern lenses designed for use on digital take the ray angle issue into account in their designs, and minimize the problem.
      The short flange to sensor distance gives a number of benefits. It leaves more room on native lenses for the focus motor, aperture mechanism, and all the other things that need to be packed in there.
      And it also allows for nearly any legacy lens mount to be adapted and allow for infinity focus. Leica M mount and M39 LTM thread mount, Contax/Nikon rangefinder bayonet mount, M42 and T thread mounts, Pentax K mount, Nikon F mount, Canon FD Mount, and others can all be easily adapted with more or less full functionality other than auto diaphragm stop down on shutter trigger. Even Contax G lenses can be made useable with an adapter that allows for diaphragm control. That's where the short flange distance really comes in handy.
      It also helps keep the body size down. All the space behind the sensor is needed for the image sensor circuitry, heat dissipation, etc. that wasn't needed on film cameras. So that can only be reduced so much. But with no mirror on the front of the sensor, the flange can be made very close.

    To be fair, it looks like the ultimate replacement for X-T3 A7C/A7CII for low budget and medium production videography. Put it in a cage, get a nice T-stop prime from Meike or Soviet lenses photo and video cameras like rehoused Vega, Helios, Mir or even Industar-61 LZ, add a handle and a microphone - and you have a BEAST of a setup to film on the go. The only thing Sigma lacks is some proper software to connect in to your smartphone so you don’t need a mirror/another monitor to look at yourself. Gonna recommend it to my friends with older versions Blackmagic

    Thanks for the review. It is an interesting concept - the core of a still/video camera to which you can add various attachments. However, when you start adding those attachments (like a viewfinder), the camera becomes heavier, bulkier, and pricier. A fairer comparison would be to add on the bits and bobs to the Sigma to give it the same capabilities as the camera you are comparing it to. Sigma makes great lenses and they have been quite innovative and unconventional with their cameras. Its great that they are sticking with it and improving on their original fp camera. However, adding a massive full frame lens to this tiny body creates something that is quite unweildy. You had to carefully pick and choose to find a lens with a size that was in keeping with the compact body.

    LUMIX needs the GX series
    I rarely use my EM-1 mkIII now because I don’t want to carry it around.
    For MFT I end up mostly using using my GX1 which is the perfect size, and I love the removable viewfinder for when I want a more compact option.

    I think MFT and APS-C still have a place despite the availability of very small full frame. It's not just the body, it's body plus lens and how it all handles. Some MFT bodies aren't small but they are a nice size, with a good grip and balance well with telephoto lenses. I shoot wildlife and aircraft, and lenses get quite big if you want long reach in full frame. That said the Sigma is an interesting design, my criticism is the lack of a viewfinder, if you use the optional EVF it's suddenly nothing like as compact.

    Ok, Let me start by saying I ran a OM-D for a long time then upgraded to Sony A7iii, and now a A7rV. I also own a Sony R1XR mark ii, and a Lumix GM1, and the Olympus Pen Mini. So for Street Photography, the RXR rules, full frame, Zeis lens, and f2.0 The drawback you could say is the fixed lens, but for me I only use it for SP, and it rules for that with the full sensor, and small and fast lens. Yes the Sigma you just presented is great, full frame, small and interchangeable lens, but you will be hard pressed to find a small fast lens for it for SP. The GM1 would still take my vote if I had to have the interchangeable lens, as there are many small fast lenses. The mast lens is a must for me in street photography as there are times when I do need the low light capability

    This seems really spiritually in-line with what the GM1 was trying to do. The only thing keeping me from pressing 'Buy' this very moment is the lens problem. 1.) I have so much amazing glass I've acquired over the years, and 2.) the L-mount equivalents would be so much larger and unwieldy. Something like the Nocticron works fine on the GM1, but haha an equivalent L-mount lens on the FP-L would probably be quite unpleasant.

    It’s not the bodies that make folks move away from full frame, it’s the insane size of the fast lenses and you can’t escape that. It’s just a function of physics. M43, APSC and compact full frames like the Leica Q3 will always have appeal for that reason.

    I have to say that the lack of ibis is actually good for video. Those ibis wobbles are worse than camera shake and are only good for vloggers. You can buy the loupe and press it against your face or droop it under an atomos shogun for serious stabe … Video AF is shockingly bad on the sigma but when you get the loupe (lvf-11) or a leica lens , and an l mount Leica lens if you want to see the manual focus scale… the manual focus becomes part of the appeal with this camera, unless you mainly vlog. Also I found the internal mic to pick up electrical noise if you record to external ssd pressed against the camera body so you need to find a rig that holds it further away if using internal audio

It has EVF built-in, not as some clumsy add-on, it has IBIS, it has a swivel back screen, and a mechanical shutter. The video aspect does not interest me so I won't comment. However, Sigma is to be applauded for continuing to advance camera design. Just not relevant to me. Oh, and if I want a pocket camera, I've gone to the dark side with a mobile phone. Sorry.

    Wonder if Sigma couldn’t “buy” and install the A9 or even A1 sensor from Sony for the FP. It would make sense for the FP to have had those sensors since the design was to go without a mechanical shutter.
    In ways Nikon with the Z8 and Z9 beat Sigma to it (outside of Sony) to bring the concept to a complete and thought through execution. A mark II FP with the Z8 sensor + addressing gen 1 issues could be a good update in 2024. But the power move for Sigma will still be to pursue a good Forveon L mount camera so they aren’t chasing the pack and one step behind. Something that can rival the GFX in terms of delivering something that’s FF+ due to its unique sensor and processing. If Sigma can leverage Panasonic’s multi pixel shot tech to stitch in camera a 4:3 and/or 1:1 hi res frame, it could be quite compelling. Sigma can take their time for a few more years to get it right since the GFX 100II didn’t quite solidify GFX’s hold on things.

You say unlike Fujifilm, you have the raw file as well, but actually on Fuji cameras you also can get both the film simulation jpg and the raw. 2. You state that most digital cameras can use electronic shutter but only after a certain point. That's not true, Fujifilm can do it at any shutter time, the same goes for both Nikon and Canon (I don't know about Sony), and my Hasselblad X1D and X2d can use electronic shutter from 60 minutes to 1/10000 second

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому +1

      Hiya! Let me explain my points i should have made it clearer in the video...
      I was talking specifically about the recipe bracketing mode on Fuji, which gives you 3 jpegs with different effects on but no raw file. On the sigma you get 5 different jpegs and the raw in bracketing mode. I know shooting standard raw and jpeg gives the raw 😊
      As for electronic shutter, it's usually a negative thing, so i was just pointing out that FORCED electronic shutter usually happens at some point on mirrorless cameras, vs all the time on sigma unfortunately. All mirrorless cameras give you the option to choose either mechanical or electronic through out the range that it is capable of shooting (elecronic takes over when the mechanical shutter can't go any faster automatically, but you can over ride it for lower shutter speeds)
