Your first review video of the Sigma FP is what convinced me. I ended up getting the Sigma FPL. 😁 Its a damn Dragon!
I'm strictly a stills shooter; when I shot with an fp L I honestly shot in medium resolution a lot of the time giving a ~26mp image. The way I see it is if I want the extra pixel density for a shot for cropping or super fine detail (that no one is honestly going to notice without a loupe but that's aside the point) I can go to high-res mode at 60mp. I also shot a ton of stills in 21:9 aspect ratio where I will usually use high-res mode for the ~39mp shots.
does the fp l have an app? Have you ever tried tethered shooting? thanks
Very in depth comparison and review of both. Definitely food for thought so thanks for your time.
Thank you for not inflicting buyers remorse. Amazing content as always.
Great video bro, very insightful. I'm still struggling wether to purchase but I think I will buy one soon.
Good comprehensive video. I hope Sigma continues developing the fp line of cameras - particularly the Foveon-sensored version they were working on a while back. Their previous Foveon-sensored cameras had such a distinctive image, almost film like.
I find the grain in low light on my Sigma FP to be very film like. I've had people ask me what filter I use in post, but it's just the camera.
So the original FP has the better sensor?
Very cool video- thank you for your effort in keeping FP users informed- thumbs up!
I would not bother with rolling shutter matters and such. It is just the charisma of the camera.
I use an FP-L for forensic photography & always on a tripod. I love it but would love if more if it had a tilting LCD.
Looking to pickup the FP some video and photo. Any favorite smaller primes ? Does manual focus well with a voightlanger for example. Manual lens might make it almost pocketable
Another informative and awesome video!
Thanks very much for this. Incredibly useful as I ponder the purchase of my 5th fp. Cheers.
Great video, very helpful, thanks! I see you have the carbon fiber skin on your fp. How do you like it, have you had any problems with it peeling at all and do you think it would come off easily if you decided to remove it?
Thanks for the in depth review brother always good to see your vids. Seems like FP-L is really not worth it to upgrade. I am really waiting to see what sigma is going to release next, very curious. For sure they can compete with the Big brands if they focused on what a camera actually needs. That 12-Bit RAW Though.....Geeze...
I was watching your diffusion video and this video showed up, thought it was just a suggested then I saw 3 Hours ago...I mean what is this energy? Abracadabra!!!
cool seeing You again man!
Thanks for this informative clip. I was undecided before. I went ahead and bought the fp after watching this clip.
Question. I know on the fpl the rolling shutter is lowest at 1.24 crop (17.5ms according to cined) and really poor at 1.53 crop
On the fp does rs stay the same from 1 x to 1.53 apsc crop?
Also there are tests reporting up to 25k usable low light on fp. Do you know how the fpl holds up in lowlight (I realize it’s inferior but wondering if it’s close or a blow out)?
Asking these questions because I’m using this camera as a aerial, ground and underwater video for documentary work and wondering if there are scenarios where one camera outperforms the other?
Hey does both camera have 4:3 mode video for anamorphic
I love my fp, both for stills and cinema. You mentioned the dial wheel on the back, and a free Sigma replacement service. The softness of that dial wheel has been a PIA to me, so that was exciting news. However, after calling Sigma in New York, it's a $250 service with about a ten-day timeframe. So, NOT free. Great video, as always.
-Tom
What? Hmmm….you should check the website. It was free…pretty messed up if they changed that.
@@JustinPhillip - from Sigma: "The SIGMA Corporation is pleased to announce its new Dial/Button Conversion Service for the world’s smallest and lightest※ full-frame mirrorless camera, SIGMA fp. With this for-fee customization service exclusively for the SIGMA fp, SIGMA converts certain parts to those of SIGMA fp L, the newest model from the fp series.
※As of June 2021, by SIGMA". I called New York anyway, talked to Margaret, she confirmed the $250 price. I think you're more special to them than you realize, Justin, and you got the family discount.
-Tom
@@NWPipeSmoker brands loving giving creators special treatment
@@RemmyMusic1 of course. That’s how they stay alive in such a saturated market.
Mate, free is only for creators :)
I didn't find any resolution retaining under the DC crop mode in the official manual for the fp, is it real that you don't lose any resolution on fp under crop mode? How is it possible? And why the newer one doesn't have this feature? I'm skeptical about that.
love your work sir.
Is the sigma fp useable for vloggin as well ? Without havin a super big butch of equipment
I think you might have a misunderstanding of the crop zoom function. It doesn't lower the resolution it crops in further on the sensor while retaining the same resolution. It depends on what you are set at. In UHD you can go from 1.0x-2.5x (2.5x being pixel to pixel). In 1080p you can crop from 1.0x-5.0x (again, 5.0x is pixel to pixel). This is the same as DC crop but with many additional crops. It I'd actually a great tool to use. Thanks for the video.
Impossible to crop in 5x and maintain full resolution.
@@JustinPhillip As I said, maximum of 2.5x in UHD and 5x in 1080p. Each are pixel to pixel for those resolutions.
@21:30 Unless you were shooting at a lesser resolution on the L to match the fp that 'banding' can simply be explained by the higher resolution of the L, where the L would have (give or take) twice the pixels to render that curved red corner.
I ended up upgrading from the fp to fpl because I do a lot of macro and landscape - the extra megapixels have been immediately useful for cropped prints. I find myself getting a lot of shots I'd struggle with before, because now I don't always have to be close enough to get that full 1:1 or 2:1 with my subject filling the frame to get a workable print. And it lets me go further with less glass when I'm hiking. Definitely not for everyone though! The low light performance is noticable, the autofocus is good enough for stills but still not great, battery life is even worse, etc. Webcam and power via the USB-c without a dummy battery is a nice little bonus though for zoom calls.
I think the fpl really only makes sense for stills photography but for me it's absolutely perfect and leans even harder than the fp in being the absolutely ideal travel camera. Now I just need a little pancake lens with enough sharpness to actually take advantage of the fpl 😆. The 7artisans 35 f/5.7 was a banger for point & shoot days with the fp but was already a little bit soft...
The FPL is definitly the way to go with you really want to do photography on a sigma FP line. Peronally I think they should have staying as a cinema camera. The FP (which is built for cine) has an amazing look for video and the CinemaDNG 12-bit RAW has that tangible feel to it, much like good film.
@@FloridaAmbient I actually feel the fpl has a very slightly nicer video image than the fp, apart from lowlight and rolling shutter. A little bit more detail, and litlle less digitally sharp, and slightly nicer blacks. But it's very subtle
@@muziektelevisie I believe that's the additional filtering you're seeing.
well, it's obvious that the higher megapixel sensor is going to crop in for higher frame rates. it's not easy to "scan" across so many megapixels so many times in one second, so cropping is used to reduce the number of megapixels.
that's why cameras that are more geared towards video almost invariably have fewer megapixels than those that are geared towards stills.
Looks like fp model has better rolling shutter than Sony A7IV. Way better.
It's pretty good.
Ready with popcorns 😁.
The Fp-L seems worse in many of these tests. The low light test may be its best showing because I feel the gradation of color seems smoother, even though the image is darker. It's a tough call.
Maybe lots of people aren’t aware but that’s the trade off for high megapixels is more noise at higher ISO.
How much of the magenta cast I'm seeing on the Komodo shots is IR, and how much is color-correction and grading?
All i did was color space transform, but yeah if you saw the rig setup with all three rigs attached. Had to use vari nds, so not ideal for best image quality. But for this video, was more focused on shutter
thanks for the review bud. Have you ever compared the EVF to the LVF (the FP loupe for the LCD)? I’m finding LVFs on the used market for around 150$ - and EVFs are mighty expensive! Thanks!
Was it 12bit cdng in Low Light?
20:00 The fp picture is very natural in tone. the fp L is slightly warmer.
👌🏼
I would like to see a video comparing the fp to the komdos colors
Still hoping FF foveon but the fp still satisfies my needs. Have you tried using steady xp to remove rolling shutter? Thanks for vid!
if they planning on produce new foveon ff, its either:
-small, slow, and expensive or
-huge, fast, and very expensive (im talking hasselblad expensive)
also, steady xp is time consuming for real work
Which one is best sigma fp OR fpL for cinema movie?
after watching comparison part with komodo, damn I wish I had extra 6k for komodo... the color is very vibrant and that dynamic range..
Thank you for the comparison, I want to buy one for large prints. It would be nice to have better low light shooting but on the other hand, the larger file size. I wish I could print a fp vs fp-L to see the difference in print. My question to myself. Can I get the fp prints to rival the fp-L? Excellent video!
That’s a good question! Wish i would have thought of that! I know a photographer that believes MP count doesnt matter. He says billboard prints stop mattering after like 20MP, but 🤷♂️
@@JustinPhillip Maybe for billboards, since you don't see them up close? Or was he just referring to really large prints? I think I'm going with the fp. I've started looking at shots from both cameras and I can't tell a gain with the 61 mp sensor.
The Fp sounds like a great deal! I do street and portrait photography plus some video work as well. After watching your video, I think the Fp is the best option for me. Thanks a ton for helping me decide ❤
The biggest issue with the fp for photography is the electronic shutter. If you do any nightime or interior shooting, you will get flicker. The camera has no mechanical shutter
@@JustinPhillip You're right! I gotta be so mindful of that.
Good comparison! Any new FP in the works? I'm waiting for a new release to buy one... :)
Would the the Fp L be a good camera for making corporate videos?
I purchased before I watched this video and boy am I glad I did
The banding on the night low light tests on both cameras was really bad. Was it a UA-cam compression thing or are those cameras really that bad?
I think the difference in colour seen on the tree trunks is probably caused by the slightly larger dynamic range. To my eye, the trunk on the right is just a bit lighter, the one on the left is slightly darker
Great informative video. Subscribed! I'm retired and have been using my Nikon D7000 for images and video for some time now. I'm considering upgrading to mirrorless 4K. I've narrowed it down my price to below $2500, knowing I will have to rig it out as I go along. My choices are the BMPCC4K, BMPCC6K Pro, Used BM URSA 4.6K G2, Panasonic Lumix GH6 and finally the SIGMA FP. I have plenty of still image cameras so this purchase is mostly for Cinematic Projects . Which one should I get and why?
They’re all perfectly good cameras i suppose. Im not really in the market of selling anyone any particular camera, i just think the fp is a great option for what it offers and for the price. Its a great minimalist camera that doesnt take much to get some nice footage out of. But at the end of the day, as they say, the best camera is the one you have on you. So in other words, the camera doesnt make the man, the man makes the camera. If you get what i mean!
@@JustinPhillip Agreed. I flipped the switch on the FP last night. I like the way it can be customized. Now I have some change left over for glass. There isn't much in the way of cinematic zooms for the full frame L-Mount. I'd like to cover the 24-70mm range. There's plenty of primes. I like the price of the 7artesian set. Any suggestions for a zoom?
@@photorooster8865 Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art Lens (L-Mount)?
@@photorooster8865 I have the Sigma 24-70mm, very sharp and very useful as an all-around lens. It does have some heft to it.
I shoot only stills and choose the fp over the fpL. But I shoot mostly at night, where the ISO difference is important. Same with the less rolling shutter and the fact I can shoot handheld at lower speed (I never use tripod)!
Opted for the FP-L because used FPs were 1400 Euros and I was able to get a used FP-L, SmallRig Cage + Grip, VF-11, two batteries, L-Mount to Arri PL mount adapter, 1 dummy battery recorder and an underbody monopod grip for 1900 Euros. I primarily shoot photos, so I'm happy. Otherwise yeah, at retail price, Sigma FP all day.
I know you mention that neither camera is particularly great at autofocus, but is the FP L at least better than the FP post-update?
Nope
If the fp had a mechanical shutter, I would rush to buy one without hesitation. The electronic shutter only is a deal breaker for me.
Do you advice the fp for shooting weddings?can you plz make a video on how you rig up an fp?
I show towards the end of this video how i use it.
I think you may have brought the used market price up on the FP!! Great review.
😂😂 its out of stock on B&H i last looked
@@JustinPhillip Before your first review you could find the bodies on eBay all day long for under $1200.
It’s really great tutorial! FP!
Subscribed. Curious your opinion image quality vs Komodo. Left similar comment from another channel.
Maybe i’ll do another video focusing on those two cameras
@@JustinPhillip Please do. Any hot takes?
Fpl is more saturated sharp and slightely higher in contrast than Fp.
Sigma FP vs Z Cam E2-F6 thoughts?
Let's hope they make new Fp camera in future that ace both fp and fp-l
You are an awesome human
Fp - the most useful cine camera for the indie to date.
The way you described the crop modes was very biased. I love your channel, but it makes no sense to say the APSC crop doesnt degrade picture quality (for still especially). It obviously does just the same as the gradient crops on the FP L. All modes are digital cropping with pictures. And its odd to compare the 5x crop being 1080p on the L, when it can do the exact same 4k resolution while cropped in more than the FP.
actually the fp-l does stay at 4k up to 2.5x crop zoom
Genio!
What about the battery life?
Its decent, on both, the same, i didnt notice a significant difference between the two
FP is better in low light situation, the illuminated pixels are bigger (in area) on the FP
Man that shutter is like jello
😳
I don't get how they can create a brilliant camera that will so obviously appeal to countless low budget film makers and NOT have it deliver serious slow motion. $500 more would not stop many from getting it, and with, say, 60 fps in RAW Cinema DNG and 4K and full frame, this camera would beat out Blackmagic's whole fleet of cameras.
The fp is a great stills camera.
🤨
when it comes to low light capability - you can finish there
yeah yeah sharpness sharpness, what an important situation :)))))))))) I MISS THE ANOLOG TIME more emotion
Thanks for the review. Yea there is a difference between the two trees, the FP L to me seems lighter and more detailed.
👏👏👏🙂❤️
Watching your videos helps me see how my friends/co-workers see me as you & I have the same preferences and theories on cameras & tech. Lastly- I really enjoy the stitched in PSA's. " Dont Drink unfiltered LA water" " Any cameras shutter is DogS#it compared to a Komodos".
Too funny & too accurate.
when they do 4k 60fps I'll switch
No, Sigma never claimed that the fpL has more dynamic range than fp. I have both cameras and I use the fpL for landscape or photos where I use a tripod for the most. You can also use it handheld, but you need to up the speed due to larger Mpx and slower readout. As to colour difference, do remember these are two different sensors as well. I use fp for film and photos.
Is the fpl more for photography?
@@A1Bokeh Yes
@@innstikk how is the picture quality?
@@A1Bokeh Of the fpL? Very very good. It can compete with my Foveon sensor cameras (from Sigma).
@@innstikk hmm I'm thinking of renting the fp
fp-L. 1000 dollars more expensive gets you a higher resolution picture, and worst low light performance, worst rolling shutter, worst HFR because of the crop, worst AF (it hunts more, although I wouldn’t use either camera in AF for video). I do wonder what Sigma was thinking when they’ve released the fp-L.
mmmhm did someone from canon started working there 🤔
@6:39 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😅 am i right tho??! 😅
@@JustinPhillip your right good sir haha - I live in Ktown and I have a 2,000 dollars cukcoo water filter
@20:00 The L is for sure warmer.
I just bought one Fp😂
So basically the FP-L is a JOKE.. and cost more..thanks !
😆 I wouldn't say that! I'm not sure honestly who that camera is for. I think they thought it would be better for stills. But IMO neither the fp nor the fp-L are good for photography. The electronic-only shutter is horrendous and the flash sync speed is ridiculously low! like 1/15 or something laughable like that.
Agreed buddy, thats for your review. Just disappointed in companies purposely leaving out features... @@JustinPhillip
