This is one of those cameras that compliments gimbals and lidar autofocus given the size and weight of it. It would no longer be a little pocket full frame monster, but does clear out a lot of video issues with the camera.

Couldn’t agree more! It’s the perfect modular camera! You can add on the LVF-11 and have an immersive shooting experience for when you’re in a creative mood, or you can throw it on a gimbal with a LiDAR based focusing motor as you pointed out earlier and output the sweet cinemaDNG 12-Bit RAW video, or better yet, take it as is on a vacation (maybe with a hand grip or a wrist lanyard if it feels too slippery) and make the most out of that tiny body by blending in for some nice street-shots! My biggest complaint with this camera is the existence of microHDMI instead of a full sized port since that’s usually the first port to fail and that’s what jts spiritual video-only predecessor (the OG Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera) was bogged down with, but I can understand that they wanted to fit it all in a small frame and one just can’t have it all! Still, love the fp and fp L - hope I’ll be able to buy one someday!

I've been using my Sigma FP-L for few years now and I really love it. I use it for professional photoshoots in addition to outstanding 4k 24p 12bit RAW. WIth the add ons its really almost perfect. 3.5h record time at highest quality and not to mention media cost. I use 4TB (£120) and two 2TB(£130 each) this is very cheap comparing to CF. I cant wait for the next version of this little beast.

Interesting to hear your take on the FPL. I have been using it and loving it for over two years. I was sold on the tiny size and full frame 60 mp sensor. Also at the time nothing compared to the price for that sensor. LED light banding is annoying, but most of the time setting the exposure to 1/60th and ISO to Auto does the trick. I find the punch in zoom focus assist works very well with manual Focus lenses. I do miss IBIS, and I am very tempted to get the Lumix S9 as a companion camera to work with all my L-mount Lenses.

I was very tempted by this, having come from using Foveon, but Panasonic S-series was more versatile for a new system.
One other main advantage over the S9 would be that Magnesium alloy unibody.

I own the fpl and have added a flip screen and battery grip that easily allows me to shoot all day on one battery. I use my Leica lenses with an adapter , Sigma autofocus lenses and have recently added the Lumix 28-200 lens. The quality of the files are as good as Leica . The electronic shutter/ no IBS issue is a non issue for me. It’s quirky ,but it’s 1:13 a terrific camera !

Review enjoyed as usual with Christopher. This is one of those cameras that will be featured on YT in 10 years time when most have long since forgotten it. Sounds familiar for Sigma! The issue with cameras that are hopefully made for travel/holiday etc is they aren't small anymore with a decent zoom lens fitted. Does full-frame mean the pictures will look any better when the grandkids are looking at them in 20 years time. Looks like it maybe a good bet for serious video shooters though.

Yeah, the ventilation on the FP is really good for long exposures. Which is why the S5ii with its active cooling might be an even better astro camera than the FP. I've not seen too many comparisons between those two though.

    • @Joamonica
      @Joamonica 4 місяці тому

@@Wildridefilms Maybe because it makes close to no sense at all? While the fp is super small, the S5/S5II are much more complete without the need of additional EVF, hot shoe, grips, and lCD loupe. Additionally, no thethered shooting option for the Sigma and a couple more of "no..." The fp-L is a different beast in the L-Mount realm, long time being the only 60 MP body with a very good dynamic range and a very decent low light capability.

It’s an interesting idea. Makes you wonder what’s possible. If you’re willing to do all processing externally and limit your recording options to 4k60, the size/media quality compromise might increasingly allow for smaller designs. The micro 4/3rds world might benefit from a slightly larger than cell phone body option as well.

'have appreciated lens reviews here and felt to respond to this Sigma fpL, 'avant garde piece.'. I purchased locally an 'fp' (24MP, NIB) early 2020 to introduce myself to digital photography. It's hi-capacity & modular design and frequent updates have been fertile ground to learn a myriad of cinematic/photographic considerations, and lens opportunities have since become phenomenal as well. I recently lucked into an affordable fpL-EVF11 combo for cropping ability and general comparison, thus far finding in Philip Bloom's words, "they made it worse", but imagine someday I'll transcend usage as I have that of other 'fp' naysayers; will see! In my limited experience, I'm inclined to think that Sigma aims to keep pricing on the lofty side, like a Leica. The solidity & IQ of these products are a joy to experience ~

I have the Sigma FP (non-L), and it's an amazing travel camera for video. I got mine on sale for $1600 including the 45mm f2.8 lens. When paired with a third-party SSD mount (DPL), it can shoot 4K RAW video while maintaining its small form factor. Add a stabilized lens or mini gimbal, and you can create some outstanding video.

Yeah, the fp / fp L really needs to be understood as a sensor in a box. It is great at being that, especially if you want to rig out a tiny cinema setup with some external storage (fp) or use it as a landscape camera (fp L). But it is a one-trick-pony. If you need any versatility look somewhere else.

I was considering this as a secondary FF camera together with my A7RIV as it is very compact, can fit easily inside the Pgytech One Go 4L V2 bag with the A7RIV + Tamron 20-40mm lens, and is compatible with Sigma's tiny i-series prime lenses. In the end, I decided to buy Lumix S9, as the Sigma fp/ fp-L doesn't have IBIS (only electronic stabilization) and the size difference between the fp and S9 is minimal. People told me that I should have bought the A7C II instead since I have e-mount lenses and is technically a better camera overall. However, I was keen on trying another ecosystem, and the S9 did not disappoint - in my opinion, the S9 produced better sooc jpeg shots than my A7RIV due to its pleasing colors.

I don't disagree with your findings but in practice they simply don't matter. Also, the highlight recovery is beyond every Nikon I owned so far. you didn't pay much attention to that.

Interesting camera. As you so well said, for some it is the Holy Grail and for others it is an overpriced toy.
But one thing has to be said, they have at least reached FUji level when it comes to autofocus. (Warning sarcasm)

    Tilt. Not fully articulated.

For most people, yes, but the fp has a Magnesium alloy unibody (which also lends it long video durations due to the dissipative design) and some special industrial features like the director's viewfinder.

The original 24mp fp is cheaper, and even has some advantages depending on your intentions.

Hey Chris. Off topic, but I'd love to see you test the occasional mobile phone using your tests and charts etc. Would be really interesting to see and compare.

Backgroundmusic in the foreground. The music got so much in the way, that I stopped watching after 3 minutes. It is not because of preferences. It happens when pitch, rhythm or volumen are close to the narrating voice. With some hearing impairments the brain has to work the double to separate music and voice, and can make it a pain. In older videos I didn't have this problem. Thought you might wan't to know.

Sorry to hear you found that. The music is actually very low on this video, and I haven't had a complaint about music levels for years now.

@@christopherfrost Yes, I also got along. Follow your videos over years. In this one the music was louder. It happens when voice and music come "too close". Perhaps you know people complain they understand nothing at family gatherings or in loud cafes, etc. Its the same thing. But a big thank you for caring, and keep up the good work! Because of your and Irene Rudnyk's videos, I purchased recently a Canon R and the new RF-nifty-50🤗

How is 2.5k reasonable for this? No EVF. No mechanical shutter. Small battery. 1 SD card. Terrible autofocus. No grip. Expensive L mount. Questionable ecosystem and support from an off brand.
This is a gimped camera in every possible way. The small size gimmick can maybe justify a price of 1.2k at most. I would buy FF Canon RP for $900 before I even look at this camera. Not to mention all the other much better FF offerings that are cheaper than 2.5k. including some that have the same small rangefinder format. Sigma must be smoking some good stuff.
