4 Levels of Potato Salad: Amateur to Food Scientist | Epicurious
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 тра 2024
- We challenged chefs of three different skill levels - amateur Emily, home cook Julie, and professional chef Joe Pace from the Institute of Culinary Education - to whip us up a fresh batch of potato salad. After each of them had presented their creation, we asked food scientist Rose to review their work. Which dish looks most delish?
Check out the level 3 recipe on the ICE blog: www.ice.edu/blog/ultimate-pot...

whoever edited this, kudos to you
@Hello There no?
Omg yess
It was I who edited it.
@Equality Freedom The Level 1-3 chefs don't read from a script. So no, that joke wasn't part of the script. It was made in the edit.
@Equality Freedom I'm telling you as a person who works with the production that there aren't any scripts for Levels 1-3 while filming. Sometimes the chefs are fed lines by the director, but those too are made up on the fly. The stuff you see really is spur of the moment.
And thanks for the compliment! Glad you like the show!
Level 1: Hi I’m a level 1 chef.
Level 2: Hi I am a level 2 chef.
Level 3: Since beyond the wrath of where the sun shone, I have created sacred delicacy’s of flavour in sacred lands far far away. All tastes of this planet of idiocy’s, I stand where god has never before, having all tastes in experience. I withhold mastery of it all. My sacred flavourful hand crafted delicacy’s have been passed down through centuries, having all food in my heavenly pallets of noble tastes, as the gift were my birth right, this is wrought upon me. Only the most royal of people may taste my creations of life, above god and this world. I, your level 3 chef have ascended to the pinnacle of beings. I have consumed god and satan themselves, with my flavourful power, pray I do not consume you.
Now try to read this with Frank's voice
I should not be laughing this hard😂😂😂🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣😂😂😂😂😂
how is this not top comment
underrated.
Pray I do not consume you💀💀💀💀💀
See THIS is why we ask "who made the potato salad?" at gatherings.
lol, exactly!!!!!! Every one has their own recipe, but brussell sprouts DO NOT go in potato salad.
Exactly. Just because it has potatoes in it, that doesn’t make it a potato salad.
The dude didnt make potato salad he made a salad w potatos.
Exactly! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They all cut the potatoes too big for my taste. Do people really like a big mouthful of potato like that?
Frank: To begin, we need to find the right soil to grow our potatoes. We'll finish filming the dish in 3 months.
He is actually growing, so finally we can say he didn't make it bc they weren't ready (crying inside for happiness)
It's not funny anymore.
That's even too short! You need four months for a potato to grow :) We have potato fields, we plant them in april and harvest in august. So let's call it a half a year for Frank! :D
Dóra Fauszt you must be fun at parties
I came looking for this comment 😂 not disappointed

And she loves fractions 😍
i don’t even like potato salad but hers had my mouth watering 🤤
Julie gives me good vibes, so does the other older woman

Me: Yes
Joe: Brussels Sprouts
Me: What?
Joe: Apples
Me: Stop.
Was patiently waiting for the raisins 🤦🏾♂️
Artistic Visionary Overflow I’m glad we didn’t get the raisins
Apples in his sounds boss
Apples in salad are awesome
I hated Brussel Sprouts until I roasted them in the oven.
Julie has such mom vibes. I live for the level 2 chefs, usually wholsome AF.
This….. This is the first video where i wasn’t able to pick any of them…. 😳
Julie is such a delight; I love how she always has a story to tell, from her mom here to visiting Italy to nutmeg from Jamaica. She really combines life, places, and people in her cooking

Yeah I don't think I would eat the level 3. But Julie's looks amazing, and honestly Emily's doesn't look half bad. 😂
He was on camera over half the time for a reason. He had so many steps to explain and it should be called something else entirely because it's so unfamiliar.

I love how everyone’s accurately describing the different flavors and Emily’s just like “if I got this at a picnic I wouldn’t be disappointed” 😭😭😭😭
Emily is learning. Last time I saw her cook potatoes it was her adding cold potatoes to boiling water. Now she is adding them to cold water. Go Emily! Level up, sis!
Where did Emily come from? How did Epicurious find her? She is a gift.
@Brainjock "Brainjock" would
@Brainjock but she's lovable and realistic. as someone who is learning to cook now, I relate to her. plus her food isn't fancy but it's not bad.

In germany we use other potatoes😂😂😂
@@unplayednamer0165 lvl 3 is just german potato salad.
@@carlsjr7975 There are many different ways to make potato salad in germany, every region makes it different, especially the difference between the north and south is huge.
@@unplayednamer0165 my experience is they don't use mayonnaise traditionally but create the emulsion in place. But that side of my family left Germany ~120 years ago.
@@carlsjr7975 potato salad with mayonaise is traditionally made in the northern part of germany, maybe your family comes from something more in the south, there they often use broth or Vinaigrette, but also many other ingerdients.
I DO NOT trust that Level 3 chef. It was confirmed for me when he started grating eggs
Same here, but it was confirmed for me when he said that adding salt to cooking water raises its boiling point. You'd have to add over three tablespoons of salt to a quart of water to raise the boiling point half a degree C.
Michael DeBusk but it is true that salt raises the boiling point...

yes!!! and frank
Bless the longer Level 4 portion. I love that the food scientists are getting more time to better explain why and how these recipes are all different yet work in their own way.
I always skip that part 😂😂😂
Joe: it’s called a quick cure
Frank: what is this “quick” that you speak of?
Jason B still takes a week
Joseph Traylor then I’m scared to think of how long Frank would be waiting for. “I started prepping these 4th of July pickled onions over Thanksgiving.”
Quick cure that takes a week. Seems legit
You could use them the same day, but they are definitely better when you let them cure.
Emily sure knows her audience. A lot of the chefs on these videos talk like they're talking to a regular TV audience. Emily knows she's talking to the UA-cam Internet audience.

I feel like Emily would be the most relatable personality if only we had not seen her make “french toast” first.
In eastern europe french toasts are a savory dish, with sometimes garlic and cheese in the crust, or filled with ham and cheese. Ketchup goes pretty well with that(bit like with grilled cheese)
Tommard well for me, it’s a bit like trying to put catchup on a pancake, or a waffle. Catchup on scrambled eggs is fine, but if your french toast taste eggy, than it’s not french toast to me.

Julie knocked this one out of the park, Emily made a fresh version of what you'd get from a deli, and Joe made a salad using potatoes, not potato salad. They all serve different people. Fun episode.
A salad using potatoes, not potato salad? It's exactly the same thing.
@@Eric1SanDiego1 Ah, but they're not. "Potato Salad" in my country (USA) generally refers to what Emily and Julie made, primarily potatoes, boiled eggs, and mayo.
Joe did not do this classic potato salad. He made a salad using potatoes. It's a fine semantic difference but it's important. A "salad" can be MANY different final dishes depending on your creativity. It's a much broader definition than western "potato salad." Joe's dish is definitely a salad, and it is made with potatoes, but it does not fit the common widely expected definition of potato salad.
Tldr potato salad normally has mayo and his didn't, thus it's just a (still very appetizing!) salad that happens to use potatoes as the star ingredient.
@@Eric1SanDiego1 It absolutely is not. His was more of a potato vinaigrette, not a potato salad as it is recognized by every single person in america. Words have meanings, and his ain't it.

Absolutely love Emily! She is funny, and her food always looks good! 😁
My personal best recipe: Pickled Potato Salad.... takes a lot of "ahead of time prep" because you are going to do a water bath canning method to process potato pickles... (or turnips, those work well, too...) dice your potatoes (we use yukon golds usually, or baby reds), pack them into clean jars, pour hot (dill) pickling liquid over them and water bath process them just as you would cucumber pickles for your jar size and elevation... weeks/months later, use the pickled potatoes/turnips for about half the potatoes you need for your potato salad... add in boiled eggs, pickles, onion, mayo, mustard, bell peppers if you like them, salt, pepper, dill, chives (and any others you may want... ) mix well and let set in the fridge for at least 2-3 hours for the flavors to blend properly...
