I’m a 55 year old Canadian. I have loved this song for a lot of years. I think it is the best song for our Remembrance Day, and any other day that commemorates our brave soldiers. We would not have the life and freedoms that we enjoy without those who fought for it. Many gave the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you all so much, both past and present for what you have given us. Such an emotional song this one. Especially the '88 Mandela tribute version. That one always gives me chills... Knopfler is criminally underrated when talked about the best guitarists and song writers of all time. Sure his songs may not be 'the most demanding shredding' but they accost. They are forevergreen and will always be remembered. When you listen to songs like this there's a warm feeling inside you, in your soul. Memories of old things, happy and sad.

We both share the same Christian name and we’re both ageing . I remember him young with a full head of hair. We’ve both gained a few kilos, lost hair and need glasses but as long as long as he keeps playing like that, I’ll keep listening, closing my eyes and go back to the 70’s. Maybe one day soon I’ll pass away like that, happy in my memories.
