- Alien Soldier[a] is a side-scrolling run and gun video game developed by Treasure and published by Sega for the Mega Drive. Retail copies were released in Japan and PAL territories while in North America it was only available exclusively via the Sega Channel cable service. The story follows a powerful being named Epsilon-Eagle, who after being nearly killed becomes determined to avenge his near death and save his planet. The character has a variety of weapons and moves that the player must master to complete the game. Many gameplay ideas are borrowed from Treasure's earlier Mega Drive release, Gunstar Heroes (1993). However, Alien Soldier puts an emphasis on challenging boss fights with short and easy levels serving as downtime in-between.
What a cool looking game and it has a cool sounding backstory too. If only this got a tie in OVA anime back in the 90s. I would totally watch a show about this guy.
You had to play and learn... Awesome graphics.. Lots of movements... Each gun had a purpose... Incredible bosses...Treasure games were so awesome! This is the maximum hidden gem in SEGA Genesis era!
And that leaves me wondering, why doesn't treasure LTD merge with Sega? They did so many awesome games together.
Hidden gem?!? Have you seen how much this game goes for?
@@CerealKiller i.e. hidden gem being a game nobody really knows about or appreciates so you could really get it dirt cheap. I think the term is over/misused a lot.
@@Daniel-it1dp price has nothing to do with a game being called a gem tho
@@wellyouknowthatslikeyouropinio it was not just called a “gem” it was called a “hidden gem” meaning nobody knows about it and by that train of thought the price would reflect that. If nobody knows about it (hidden) the demand would be low and it stands to reason the price would be low.
finishing the game in 30 minute. NOT BAD OJI-SAN!!!
"I found someone who finished the game in under 12 minutes "

On super hard
This game was ahead of its time
Music in this game is absolute fire.
Love the intro music just creepy sci-fi shit and the track is called "Side Limits" which I guess alludes to multi-dimentional travel
Probably the best examples of sprite-rotation in a 16-bit game.
Considering the Genesis has no hardware for rotation.
Treasure definitely did the same technique of using smaller sprites to make large bosses, which was fairly common to see in most arcade games
Is this actual sprite rotation though, or just lots of pre-calculated frames loaded in as required creating the illusion of sprites rotating nice and smoothly? I'm thinking it's entirely the later, mainly because the rotation isn't showing any artefacts that always happens with such an effect, although I may be wrong. I mean, it's not impossible for these consoles to actually do sprite rotation in real-time when good programmers do their thang (notice the artefacts that clearly give away the fact there's real sprite rotation going on here): ua-cam.com/video/DDFMhsCrNZE/v-deo.html (the rotation is mostly on the bosses but is also used on some enemies and objects too).
@@inceptional i wouldn't say so..although its possible via software, in the case of alien soldier, theyre pre-calculated but to sav3 memory the limbs are flipped so they dont have to make every possible angle..atleast thats what i think , for the link you showed its definitely some kind of software sprite rotation
Who had really finished this game?
Visualshock! Speedshock! Soundshock! Now is time to the 68000 heart on fire!
Alien Soldier™
For MegaDrivers Custom
no sound shock here with the emulator set to 22KHz audio sample rate.
They say the Genesis has 500 colors and its hard for programmers to even ACCESS the good colors. Not a problem for Treasure.
Seeing it for the first time. Completely blown away 🤤
yeah i can't imagine something made so long ago to be so well done,
isekai ojisan really introducing lots of obscure sega series to us
Yeah me too. It's soooo similar to Gunstar Heroes (which is a great thing). The music (like at 37:10) and some of the weapons especially.
@@gregames4843 Alien soldier was made by the same company that made gunstar heroes, hence the similarities
This game, in my head canon, would take place 4 yrs after the indie game XenoGunner. Spectacular sparky, another indie game, who knows how many years that game takes place after alien soldier.
One thing I always loved about Treasure games was the backgrounds. This game is probably the most spectacular in that regard. I never played this on an actual Mega Drive but I wish I had, I bet those backgrounds looked amazing on a CRT television.
Played this awesome game when it first released in 1995. It was the most intense game I've played at that time.
This was only released in Europe right? We never got this in the US.
It's included in the Genesis and Megadrive collection, I got a hacked version of the European one off Steams workshop set for 60fps instead of the usual 50 (Had to dip into the Workshop files for the rom to use in Kega Fusion or Retroarch because the emulator they give you stinks, but I prefer the localization over the standard 60fps Japanese one)
@@docsavage4921 It was distributed in the US over some exclusive download service I think.
@@docsavage4921 Not sure, that's a distance memory lol
That backstory tho ... the hell did I just read lmao
I'm seriously impressed with the amount of bosses and smooth stage transitions tho. Woah.
Terrorlist!
I think the director wanted to finish game solo and couldn’t do it. And in the end they didn’t have enough time to polish the story and even make an ending.
There was more lore on their website suggesting that game’s creator has many ideas for game’s universe
@@Unexpectedstuff I see, thank you for the extra bit of information kind stranger.
This game has a "GunStar Heroes" vibe with its music and sound effects
same devs, by TREASURE
THIS GAME IS MASTERPIECE
@@Chief_PurpYes it fucking is lmao. You don't know shit about retro video games then.
The amount of depth the game has is insane for a late Sega Gen game. Weird choice to have it as a Sega Channel exclusive and not a physical release in NA
As quite modern engineer, I still in awe on how the h... game devs in the old days make it possible to do be able to fit all these things in catridge while maintaining runtime perf
Creativity, space limits made developers work harder to stay within those limits, but they were able to pull some crazy stuff off in games at the time.
Hard to believe all this happened on Earth in 2015 :D
I remember it all, like it was yesterday.
So by now, this game is an alternate history.
No way this is the first time I see this game. It really looks amazing, the gameplay and the graphics.
That's because it never came out in the US. The only way to play it in the US was thru the Sega Channel.
Ah yes, the rough years of 2015
A great game that never saw the light outside of Japan when released. Thank God for fan translation.
Some guy put this game on a Genesis cartridge and I got it for 30 bucks good deal.
It was released in Europe
It was released in the UK

isekai oji-san!
Wow this game is better than so many 32 bit games.
This game has enough body horror to give any David Cronenberg film a run for his money.
What do you mean?
@@pretzel6629 The enemies of this game are exceptionally grotesque and disturbing to watch. Especially for a game that came out in 1995.
@@gonzalot.605 that I agree with, but I think body horror has more to do with warped human imagery, alien soldier enemies are more based around animals and alien designs.
@@pretzel6629 A lot of enemies have humanoid features, though. Like mouths with gums and teeth, eyes, etc.
@@pretzel6629 The enemies in this game are all humans that have been infected with a parasite.
My god. I never got to play the most badass Sega Genesis game that ever existed.
If only 2015 was that cool...
Uncle from another world anyone?
W anime
Oh my fav game back then. A lot of memorable bosses especially Stage 9 and 20. That boss has too many forms kid me losing my sanity battling that one
So many boss fights.
How they achieved those graphics? that's still a mistery.
I always thought the actual challenging and entertaining part of most run and gun games is the boss fights. The rest of the stages always looked like padding in between the actual fun.
Glad there is a game that focused mainly on boss fights.
That coupled with the huge, detailed sprites, multiple enemies on stage and amazing music makes me wonder if Sega was as capable of good run and gun games as NeoGeo if there’s a good developers team working on it.
Alien Soldier as well as Gunstar Heroes really set a high bar for rest of the game devs who complained about the limitations of the console for run and gun games when compared to NeoGeo.
34:20 as a kid I was very excited when I realized that this was the seven force boss from Gunstar heroes and the same OST.
Never played this game but I have to say, they did a really good job of making those enemies look gruesome at that time.
Creativity in developers.
Even though you only fight him 1/4 of a way through the game, I think the boss battle on the train with XI-Tiger was the best boss fight in the game. One of the best on the Genesis.
No reason to use the 22KHz audio sample rate setting in 2019.
Damn those terrolists in 2015
And Witches apparently lol so many typos
This is what a boss rush game is
I love this game just the best use of the Genesis power possible. There isnt really any real rotation like in Gunstar but still the FX are crazy.
Check out PANORAMA COTTON if you wanna see the Genesis pushed even farther
21:36 A-Earth hero Epsilon Eagle saves B-Bear
The freakiest retro game I've ever seen
are these graphics and FPS upscaled or did it look like this on the genesis? if it did thats amazing cause i would loose my shit if i saw this back in the day
It looked like that. One particular thing i usually commment on AS, is that back in the day i saw pics of the game in magazines and i just imagined that, that huge protagonist sprite should move in a sluggisg or clunky way, that is what commom sense told me. The day i finally played... i was just blown away from the chair. That fast and smooth movement in EVERYTHING and that big, was just out of this world. My eyes couldn't believe it. And not to mention the perfect control and gameplay.
Ojisan...
This game takes so much visual style from Thunder Force 4
Good
How come I never heard anyone talk about this game until Isekai Oji-san? This looks awesome.
Blue print GUN-STAR HEROES.🔥
This was after Gunstar but it uses alot of the sounds and music samples from it. totally different game since its all bosses and the Levels are just for resting up between
Im just here because of isekai ojiisan
i already loved the game but uncle made me want to 1cc it. i've mastered the first half so far

Well, so much for 29 minutes and 29 seconds.
Great game by Konami! I’m playing it today. Definitely has a contra like feel to the game
Not Konami, but Treasure, which was actually founded by former Konami staff.

Good game, but nothing more than a boss rush game, and definitely not my favorite Treasure game (Dynamite Headdy, McDonald's Treasureland Adventure, and Gunstar Heroes takes it for me). Good adrenaline rush, but stages could've used more meat on their bone than what Treasure gave us.
Dynamite Headdy was kind of tedious and the graphics suck mostly. How can you not prefer the insanity of ALIEN SOLDIER its sick

For all the rave reviews there's something not right about the game. I have it on my Mega Drive 2 mini and still can't get into it. May never get into it. I'm not bothered if not.

This game is SO fucking boring. Shoot, slide, re-energize, rinse-repeat.
Correction: This game LOOKS boring. When you actually sit down and play it, it's actually fun.
@@trench900 Nope. It is boring. Repetitive tactics weigh the game down heavily.
@@falksi3182 well, I mean it was built as a boss rush more than anything, so maybe it's not for you
Most, if not all of the game's mechanics are emblematic of the run and gun genre. So if the game seems like it's way reliant with blasting enemies to bits and pieces, it probably has something to do with that.
@@trench900 I love basting enemies to bits, I just don't want to play 20min worth of a game before you have to change the tactics up of how you do it. And that's what happens with Alien Soldier sadly.
