Foreword: A re-upload to take advantage of UA-cam 60 FPS Support!
Also known as Crying: Aseimei Sensou in Japan, Bio-Hazard Battle is a horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up released for the Sega Mega Drive console.
During a global bio-war, a new and deadly retrovirus is unleased by enemy forces, introducing powerful new lifeforms on to the planet, Avalon.
Orbiting the planet is the space station O.P. Odysseus, carrying with it some of the last surviving humans. The purpose of the station is to preserve human life until Avalon becomes inhabitable again. Pilots on-board the station have been awoken from their cryogenic sleep in order to reclaim the planet and establish a new colony on the surface.
The player must choose from four different bio-ships, each possessing a range of different armaments, in a bid to cleanse the various hostile lifeforms from the planet.
Thematically, the game bears resemblance to Irem's R-Type series where enemies usually take the form of hellish fusions of biological organisms with machines. It is also similar to Apidya, another shooter released on the Amiga computer, which also involves fighting giant insectoid enemies.
Each ship is equipped with a super-beam weapon that can be charged and fired by holding down the B-button. This shot covers a wide area of the play field and is very useful for bringing down some of the more power enemies in the game.
As with similar games in the genre, BHB makes numerous power-ups available to the player, which appear as multi-coloured, floating globes on the play-field. Each weapon grants your ship a different ability and each ship gets it's own, unique weapon based on the colour of the power-up; this is a really neat feature and gives the game plenty of variety, as well as a degree of replayability.
The main player ship is orbited by a small satellite that fires your collected weapon. Moving the main ship causes the satellite to rotate around your craft and this forms a big part of strategy during play as it enables the player to shoot enemies appearing from behind, as well as using the satellite to block enemy projectiles.
Probably the most useful weapon is the homing laser (which I use predominantly throughout this video) due to the fact that it is quick, powerful and homes in on enemies as soon as they appear on the play-field. Other weapons are useful, but I found the homing laser meant that I could destroy enemies effectively and spend more time avoiding enemy bullets.
I remember owning this game back near the time of release having been heavily discounted. While the style of the game was impressive, I remember finding the game very difficult and I could never make it beyond the third stage. While the game scrolls very smoothly, it demands quick reactions from the player in order to dodge the tiny projectiles that the enemy ships shoot. I usually get killed by bullets that I failed to spot, rather than flying into oncoming enemies.
Having had chance to replay the game, it's tough without being unfair. Although the scenery does cause clipping with your ship, it doesn't cause your ship to explode simply by coming into contact with it; many shooters make it difficult enough in simply dealing with enemies, let alone having to master pixel-perfect flying through tight tunnels or flight corridors.
The art direction and sprite design in this game is of a particularly high standard. Many of the enemies are drawn with specular highlights that make them look three-dimensional and the enemy designs themselves look great.
Music and sound is also very decent, with most of the background music having a distinctly organic vibe to it; the perfect accompaniment when shooting things with lots of tentacles.
Rounding off the package is co-operative multiplayer, allowing you to face off against the enemy with a friend.
If you're looking for a shmup with replayability, plenty of variety with plenty of challenge, Bio-Hazard Battle is definitely worth a look.

I don't think I've ever heard a soundtrack so appropriate for a game. The songs are weird but catchy, and played in a minor key with a reverberating quality that makes your skin crawl. With so many bizarre sights and sounds, Bio Hazard Battle is one of the more memorable - and underrated - Genesis shooters.

It's funny how things stick in your mind, I didn't play this game a lot, only in 1992/1993 and never played again but 27 years later I'll still find myself humming the stage 3 music while I'm working on something, never forgot the weird long legged crab thing either.

Seriously reminds me of some of the more avant gard end of the minimal synth genre. What a cool game. Unlike Darius, it makes sense whenever You see fish as bosses. Darius is great too, but just lots of sky fish.

This game is super nostalgic to me. I use to play this with my dad when I was younger and we were like crazy about this game until our genisis broke. I still have the game cartridge with me but always had difficulty remembering the name and finding gameplay of it. But it had to be the music that literally was embedded to my brain bc the minute i played this video and heard it i had so many wonderfull flashbacks of us playing. Thank you

I happy that you and your Dad were playing this together. The memories when I was younger is the main reason why I pretty much just play retro games. I hope you have a Genesis and have this game! Memories are so important!

Cannot *believe* this is a complete playthrough of this old gem of a Sega Megadrive game!
I remember playing this as a little girl at my grandmother's house, she had an assortment of lesser-known games and this was one of my favourites. I was too young to get the story I just knew I was the Good Alien killing all the gross Bad Aliens. On Tuesday I found a Switch game called Sega Classics, basically a hodgepodge of old Segas games now playable on the Switch and right there with my absolute favourite game (Streets of Rage 2 - Blaze is coolest character!) this cartridge actually had *Bio-Hazard Battle* and after a few minutes of playing it was like being a child at my grandmother's house again 😭😭😭
Thanks so much for this walkthrough, I'm having troubled getting past a certain point and watching this I think it may be my choice of Weapon (the Red Homing Laser is my favourite)
Thanks for helping out fellow fans ⭐️=^_^=⭐️

From the beginning intro soundtrack to the ending of the final battle, this is a freaking awesome piece of music making! This game looks easy as you watch the expert play the game, but in fact is is NASTY hard because you have to have the memory of a savant to follow the patterns of the enemy... plus concentrate past the awesome music! I loved this game...

Thank you very much for posting this amazing blast to the past game. As a kid I couldn't make it passed the 3rd stage as well. Even as an adult looking at what you went through I don't think i would have the patience to go through it. But i'm glad you did... and you did without getting hit once which is an incredible feat! I also appreciate the whole backstory that you gave us because my nephew was along with me watching this and asking why is the world like this... notablly the art style made it seem like everything were just mutated organic figures like we're used to... flying catipllars... giant mantis... but also gigantic simple shaped microscopic virus shapes as well... the monster that used to give me the chills was the giant leach creatures. Great job!

Interestingly, a Japanese fansite apparently had a description of the final boss that questioned whether it was itself a retroviral being. Despite being a machine CREATED BY one of the earlier warring nations--did they use something alien by mistake? In any case, I decided to dream up descriptions and names for the bosses, names following the Greek mythology theme of the English-side ship names.
St. 2: City ruins scavenger "Medousa"
    St. 3: Arboreal parasite "Python"
St. 4: Mud-shielded subterranean predator "Antaios"
St. 5: Apex aquatic predator "Ketos"
St. 6: Machine usurping parasite "Mimas"
St. 7: Weapon production facility multifarious defense system "Acheron"
St. 8, phase 1: Primary weapon production control system "Pandora"
St. 8, phases 2 and 3: Defective alien terraforming master control system "Epimetheus"

That first stage music kind of sounds like 'Freewill' by Rush.

This game looks pretty cool. It reminds me slightly of U.N. Squadron on the SNES. Not the same theme, but similar gameplay.

I was so confused. The music at the beginning didn’t fit the level or any of the music in the game. Then I realised it was the ‘demo’ section 🙃

I think the Japanese title of 'Crying' is more appropriate than biohazard battle.

Your better off with Biohazard Battle to be honest, the two games are almost identical except in crying you can't hold down the A button to fire, it's downright painful if you don't have a turbo button.
