    If I remember my music history, Sir Paul would certainly have chosen "God only Knows" as his fav on the album. Indeed, one of his fav songs ever. He spoke very reverently of it and I'm pretty sure was a fan of the whole album even.

    It's even more miraculous when you take into account that Brian Wilson composed, arranged and produced all these songs, in their infinite complexity, when he was only 23 years old and well on his way to losing his mind.

      And Sgt Pepper was Paul's response to Pet Sounds.
      Sadly Brian Wilson's response to Pepper was a mental breakdown and he pretty much lost his mind at this point in his life. So sadly we never got to hear the response to Pepper which if memory serves was supposed to be Smile.

As regards The Beach Boys, one of my all-time favorite groups, though, I see I am not even on the same screen.For me, their best, most coherent album ever was 1971’s *Surf’s Up*, a really close call for me with *Sunflower* (1970). Oh Caroline YES! What a BEAUTIFUL video! I wept right through it! You gotta be careful with this album, it's so honest, like you said! And the sounds! Well....that's Brian. He followed this up with the AMAZING single "Good Vibrations". I don't go in for "greatest ever" so much, I definitely have albums I play more than "Pet Sounds", but it definitely is a SPECIAL, unique, one of a kind album and as I'm sure you've read by now the concept was to make the listener feel loved. And watching this video, it shows the album succeeded! I hope Brian himself sees this! I totally understand why all these lyrics hit you hard. "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" is something practically HOLY to me, a sacred piece of music that captures a feeling of love in a bottle. I want to LIVE in that song. The album before this "Summer Days & Summer Nights" was the beginning of this era, and as I said, "Good Vibrations", and then the DAZZLING "Smile" project which Brian shelved rather than compete with "Sgt. Pepper"! That's like......Beethoven! GREAT TO SEE YOU, SISTER!

    • @janhommer
      @janhommer Рік тому +2

      Don't forget "Today" (or did you mix those two up?), "Summer Days and Summer Nights" was actually a "step back", because the guys at Capitol (I think?) were pressuring Brian into making a more "traditional" "fun in the sun" Beach Boys album. Not that I personally have a problem with that per se, (think they're earlier stuff is underrated as heck, anyay...), but "Today" wasx definitely the precursor for "Pet Sounds" (and is also great imo!)

    • @TTM9691
      @TTM9691 Рік тому

      @@janhommer I don't think much of "Today". "Summer Days And Summer Nights" has (all in a row) Girl Don't Tell Me, Help Me Rhonda (the GOOD version, not the crappy version on "Today"), California Girls, Let Him Run Wild and You're So Good To Me. I'll take those songs ANY DAY over ANYTHING on "Today". I'll take the INTRO of "California Girls" over ANYTHING on "Today". He gets great production notes for "Today", blah blah blah, ut I don't love the material, it's a nice step in the right direction, but it's not a classic album despite what Beach Boys fanatics (how embarrassing) will tell you. And so, NO, "Summer Days" is NOT a step back, it's a step FORWARD. It's a better album. Period. I know it was a much bigger influence on THE BEATLES, which everyone worships 'round here! lol

    I'm a Boomer who lived before and after Pet Sounds and I have a professional background in the American pop recording industry. I can tell you that most of the contemporary acts of the day are on record citing Pet Sounds as a pivotal point in pop music.
    We take the aural space that the recording centers us in for granted as modern music listeners and consumers ...but in its day this was revolutionary.
    Never before were you taken to a sonic space to experience what today we simply process as a "sample" of a barnyard, a "sample" of bird song, a "sample" of a goat bleating, etc.
    In those days this involved setting up 80 lbs of recording equipment outdoors and waiting until everything except what you wanted to record to remain quiet for 5 minutes

  • @KealohaHarrison
    @KealohaHarrison Рік тому +32

    Easily the most sonically beautiful album I’ve ever heard bar none. The first time I heard it I was a junior in high school and I read that Brian Wilson once said that the best way to experience to it was to turn off all the lights and listen to it in the dark. So that year on 16 May, the anniversary of its release, I did that and it’s been an annual tradition for me ever since.

    Glad you're back! I don't know if Pet Sounds is the greatest album of all time but it's certainly the best album of the Beach Boys and it surely can compete with "Sgt. Pepper", "Revolver" and "Rubber Soul". It took me quite a while to realize what a timeless masterpiece Pet Sounds is, because it's such a giant step away from the surf and car songs the Beach Boys recorded before Pet Sounds. It's without any doubt the magnum opus of Brian Wilson. 😀 👍👍👍👍👍
    P.S.: Now that you've reacted to "Pet Sounds" you should also listen to "The Beach Boys Today" (a so to say "Mini Pet Sounds" from 1965) and "Smile" (The album that was planned to be the greatest album of all time). 👍

    I'm glad that the album still has an impact with young people these days. I first heard of Pet Sounds in the 1980's with a Doonsberry comic strip of all things, a character was in the hospital dying of AIDS and his last request was to listen to Pet Sounds. His last words on Earth were "Brian Wilson is God" and that was a mystery to me (all of 14 at the time). I didn't have the opportunity to find out for myself until 5 years later when I was on an ill fated trip with a bunch of college kids crammed into a single room at an East coast beach, I walked that beach right at sunrise and I happened to have Pet Sounds on my walkman. It wasn't planned, and I had heard bits and pieces of the album before, but this time I walked the beach as the sun rose and listened and it impacted me to the point where I was just moved by the whole experience. The lyrics about growing up and coming to terms with that transition from childhood into "oh shit, this is serious now" got me. It's one of those universal pieces of music (taken as a whole) I tell my nieces and nephews to listen to and REALLY listen to when they're that age. It's timeless, even if the world it is talking about died 60 years ago(ish). I'm so glad that you've heard it, you love it, and you kind of know what Brian Wilson was talking about. Plus the freaking Wrecking Crew knocked it out of the park with the music. Without them, the album probably wouldn't have worked. Always around my #1 album of all time.

      Not a single song on Pet Sounds comes close to moving me the same way ANY Beatles song from the same era does. I don't like the "orchestral" sentiments on it at all. There are some great songs on the album, for sure, but they are covered in so much candy floss, and interrupted by so many odd experimental flavours that interrupt the flow of a catchy song, that I can't actually play them without being irritated by the production choices.
      The Beatles' songs, instead, are songs prepared by a gourmet chef who puts just the right amount of each ingredient and playfully satisfies your tastebuds with the right amount of tension and release. Not that I don't like the Beach Boys... but this is literally the Beach Boys album I enjoy the least.
      Having said that, clearly a lot of people really like Pet Sounds---including yourself---so my take on it is only my take It is an undeniable that this was a landmark album, and is probably largely responsible for bringing us aspects of Sgt. Pepper (and interestingly, Pepper is probably my lease favorite of the later Beatles albums, for similar reasons of album flow... but I do still love the album).

    There was a time when the Beatles and the Beach Boys were really battling each other for supremacy in a way. The Beatles Rubber Soul and Revolver albums drove Brian Wilson mad, because they were so good and such a departure of the Beatles from the rock and pop tunes for girls and dancing they were famous for until then (I Want To Hold Your Hand, Please Please Me, etc). They'd expanded into folk, psychedelia, and more serious topics on those albums, with much greater production and more sophisticated arrangements.
    That drove Brian to first produce the epic Good Vibrations single, and then the entire Pet Sounds album. Which was a huge turn for the Beach Boys from their earlier hits just like the Beatles version, like the car and surfin songs like 409 and Shut Down and Surfin Safari.
    So, when Paul McCartney heard Pet Sounds, that drove HIM crazy thinking they needed an album to top THAT. So they made Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

    I loved the montage of this video! The care and kindness you provided was what the album deserved. Anxious to see your reaction from the album "The Beach Boys Today!", from 1965, considered the embryo that would become Pet Sounds a year later. The B-side is simply one of the most beautiful things ever invented...
    Congratulations ❤

    Wonderfull video :) really enjoyed it. For me Pet Sounds is the greatest album of all time. Every track is perfect and it blew my mind first time hearing it. And the final harmonies in God Only Knows...oh god!!!

    The smile sessions could legit blow your mind. The first 19 tracks are the actual songs, so those are all you technically need to focus on, and even in their unfinished form they’re just mesmerizing

    Yayyy, you did Pet Sounds! I was one of the ones who pestered you in comments to listen to this great album 👍🏻 Im glad you enjoyed it. It has an innocent hope that does reflect both on our growth in youth but still is touching at any age imo. That leaves one thing to say:
    Caroline, yes!

    Caroline, you are adorable!!! I so appreciate your reactions to Pet Sounds. Sir Paul McCartney has been quoted as saying his all-time favorite recording is “God Only Knows”. In fact, he even wishes he had written it!! You have excellent taste in music, and it made my day that you enjoyed Pet Sounds!!

    Paul McCartney has admitted that "Pet Sounds" has made him cry and that "God Only Knows" is his favorite song in all of music history. In 1990 Paul said that he had given each of his children a copy of the album because he believed that nobody’s musical education is complete until they’ve heard Pet Sounds.

      @zacharyspencer8321 Yes! McCartney said that to Ronnie Wood on Wood's radio show. Paul told Ronnie he was onstage with Brian, and they were going to do "God Only Knows" as a duet, and Paul said he started crying.

    Now listen to "The Smile Sessions" or Brian Wilson's recreation of "Smile", it's what was supposed to be the follow-up to Pet Sounds and it's just as good (if not better)

    "Sloop John B" was not written by The Beach Boys. It was originally published as "The John B. Sails") and is a Bahamian folk song from Nassau. A transcription was published in 1916 by Richard Le Gallienne, and Carl Sandburg included a version in his The American Songbag in 1927.
