    So maybe Diversity Marvel isn't about superhero battles or heroes fighting villains. Maybe it's about character development. Let's try tackling this question from a different angle.

      I'll have to admit, sometimes thats not too bad (unless the character is absolutely perfect and not someone just trying to (and sometimes failing) to be perfect and better than most)
      A perfect man going against an imperfect world is not a bad story structure, fuck a lot of stories do that and they rock, its just that the writing for most of these types of stories is just... its fucking garbage

      @emilianocaprili4160 5 років тому +14

      In my humble opinion this failure has three reasons: the mediocrity of the writers, the ideological blindness of the comic's editors and the decision to create character focused stories, because like happens in the real life of the real people, also in the fictional life of the comic the characters are defined by their life, their actions, their experiences, their choices, in a word they are defined by their story and what happens when the writer decides to do not tell a story, because he want put the character in the limelight?

    Another thing to note is the panel where the cop tells Peter his Uncle Ben is dead. Look at the background. You don't see any objects or environment there. All you see is red. It perfectly displays Peter's emotions, like how he is dealing with shock, grief, and rage all at the same time. His expression says it too. Wide eyes, hand coming up to cover the mouth, he's even noticeably shaking. An overwhelming tidal wave of strong emotions as he tries to process how someone could come into the only sanctuary he ever had from the cruel world and bring it crashing down by taking away one of the only two people he ever cared about or ever cared about him.
    And then, after he had busted the criminal, the look on his face as the tears come streaming down was good enough, but the author also gave us his thoughts. His Uncle Ben was one of the only two people who loved and cared for him and the most important man in his life. And his act of selfishness was what ultimately killed his uncle. Like, can you imagine having to live with that? That'd be like if I bought alcohol for a teenager who couldn't get it at the store because of his age, and that teenager later kills my mother in a car accident because he was driving drunk off the beer I bought him. Welcome to hell, me.
    In Riri's panel of grief, I actually had to wonder what her thoughts might be. And later, what she became was something she would have become even if her step dad and friend hadn't died. In Peter's panel of grief, I just wanted to hug him. I could feel his feelings at that point and, damn. THIS is how you create an origin story. Like Daredevil before him, Peter's life changed in a dramatically different direction from that point going forward. It even gives us a strong moral to live by, one that has become the staple not just for comics, but real life for decades.
    With great power comes great responsibility.

      Tonberry Queen so true! For a story that’s trying to focus on character development, they really backfired with this issue. A hero’s tragedy is supposed to define who they are as a person by displaying their reaction, how a person is effected by grief defines whether they’re a hero or a villain. But Riris tragedy doesn’t effect her in any way! We only get one panel of her reaction, and then it’s just on with the plot as if nothing happened. If anything, I think the inclusion of this tragedy made her less human, not more

    People sometimes hear the phrase "With Great Power comes Great Responsibility" and fail to understand the weight of those words. For us, the readers, people who might have never been in such a situation, it might look like an inspiring quote, something to live by (And rightfully so).
    But it is hard to understand what they mean to Peter if you put directly in his mindset. For him, it's not an inspirational quote, it's a *BRAND*, a scar that will never fully heal and as LD puts it, gets constantly reminded every time Peter finds Aunt May standing alone. That's what makes it powerful, tragic and beautiful at the same time. Because knowing the pain that comes with this realization, we understand that Peter became Spiderman not because of his powers, but because of the massive sacrifice he had to endure because of his own arrogance.
    It is, very literally, the definition of *Turning Pain into Purpose*.
    Edit: Also, the answer to the riddle is Flaws.

      Very nice

    • @niche0boven
      @niche0boven 5 років тому +26

      Ah, but that phrase becomes a burden as much. Picture a protagonist who must do something abhorrent to save lives, and not being sure they can live with that burden. Will they do it. And if they do, what if loved one refuses to understand? (got serious angst for that in one story... the relationship has not recovered)
      That phrase really is the kryptonite of Sues. They don't do responsibility when its invonvenient, painful, or makes them look bad...

    • @DonVigaDeFierro
      @DonVigaDeFierro 5 років тому +16

      There's a version of this phrase that is actually deep, you just have to swap some nouns:
      "With great responsibility comes great power".
      What does it mean? That being responsible for anything that happens to you, gives you a new degree of freedom.
      Feeling that you're powerless against life is an easy thing to do.
      Obviously, you're not at fault for the horrible things that happen to you, but you're still responsible to act accordingly.
      If you get robbed, you're obviously not at fault, but you're still choosing responsibility: You can report it to the police or you can pretend it didn't happen.
      If some horrible tragedy happens to you, it's very easy to blame others and do nothing afterwards. But if you become *responsible*, then you can overcome tragedy.

      It’s the same with Bruce Wayne A.K.A Batman, he puts on the suit to put fear in his enemies, the same type of fear he felt as a kid when watching his parents die in “Crime Alley”, he vows to never let another kid in Gotham City have to ever go through that.
      The man is so damaged that he can’t even live a normal happy life with any woman because he will feel guilty and feel as though he is letting down his parents, the people of Gotham and himself for trying to be selfishly happy.
      (That’s sacrifice to me, and it is a great responsibility.)
      I always related to both Batman and Spider Man “Peter Parker” for those reasons, they’re the most unselfish people you could ever read about in comics.

    • @AColonDashSix
      @AColonDashSix 5 років тому +9

      True. The beautiful thing about the quote is that Peter literally lost one of his loved ones because he selfishly ignored his responsibility. Moreover Peter loses the very person who told him to use his talents to help people. It’s a tragic circle and a great origin story

    It's amazing how "With great power comes great responsibility!" had become perhaps THE most ridiculed line in all of cinema, because it became so abundant.....And as soon as the "new age", "SJW" "whatever"..ummm...."characters" enter the scene, we all remember that and think: Yeah.....Where is your responsibility, Awesome-Heroine-Number-72? Well, In my honest opinion, #comicsgate is correct, the current trend of comics is rather displeasing and reaching boredom quite fast.
    The political correctness that's been forcefully laced into the industry is becoming a problem since they do not know how to create and develop said "empowering" in a believable and intetesting way.
    This "diversity" line is , for many reasons, quite a failure of implementation and sales since they are insisting in trying to appeal to minorities, forgeting and/or straight out forsaking the major populace that originally bought and made the industry thrive.

      I believe that's been the point between this video and the Ms. Marvel one. These writers could not be PAID LESS to care about how enjoyable, coherent, relatable, etc. these characters are. The message is all that matters. Don't like don't buy, but don't buy the other's guy stuff too even if it's better.

    • @booperdee2
      @booperdee2 5 років тому +40

      The counter i usually see is 'but representation!' to which i say, why do you want terrible representation? ask for more and better and dont settle for laziness disguised as allegiance when its really a quick money maker to pump out garbage so long as it has 'the right face', its almost exploitative for people to give their time and money to these sorts of things.
      Whats interesting though as something ive been thinking of recently, women TEND TO be more agreeable than men. Men negotiate for better pay more often, Men are mostly the ones that are in prisons because they are disagreeable to the point of needing or justifying or wanting to commit crimes. Women tend to be better socially evident by their interest and overwhelming representation in medical fields, child care, teaching, social studies, higher voting population, and are more likely to give in to someones immediate need or wants to alleviate suffering.
      Why this relates to the video is that femininity tends to be more forgiving and give more leeway, and to pad down problems and general negativity, and so im guessing that because of this, this is why we have uninteresting characters in these comics, there isnt so much public backlash and therefore critique, (and if there is, those people are prompty labeled as toxic sexist men, which also extends into being called Racist or a Nazi for similar reasons) because theres more acceptance of story building faults in order to promote the empowerment of minorities and women. Societally currently, people are more feminine, masculinity is 'under attack' roughly speaking, and so that defuses a lot of the necessary tensions when it comes to story building.
      No one is allowed to suffer, even if it means theyll come out stronger after the suffering is over, because current society is more gentle, which is of course nice, but when some real problems show up, its going to be very difficult to manage them. Take for example the Vape shop guy that wouldnt 'suffer', in his perspective, for 1 minute, to serve a guy wearing a MAGA hat which he identified as a kind of threat. Then he lost his job for it, which is obviously much more damaging.
      Conflict is what drives so many stories, and conflict tends to be a masculine trait. Since we are straying away from that and going more into femininity, conflict is misplaced, poorly understood and therefore poorly written, or absent, thus making stories less interesting. Everyone needs to feel like they can do no wrong, and theres no problems with themselves, in order to fuel a temporary bubble of protection that inevitably pops and youll be subject to EVERY HORROR and die, instead of gaining slow immunity to them.

Which feeds his apathy towards destruction, death, and even winning at times, since it's a learning experience for him and his creations.

    Great video! Spot on.
    Years ago I had the great fortune of attending a writing seminar taught by Ann C. Crispin. In the beginning of the lessons, she would ask a simple question. If you were to see one of your characters approaching you on the street, what would you do?
    The proper answer? RUN! As the author, you are the one who gave the character all of their flaws, placed every obstacle in their path, created every dilemma, and set every enemy upon them. You are the source of all their misery, and this is a good thing. She would go on to explain that, in order to create interesting characters, you had to be willing to hurt them, and go on hurting them until they grow enough to overcome the forces against them. This is the very basis of any decent story, and this is the issue I have had with so many recent stories created in movies and comic books. The authors are afraid to really hurt their characters for fear of offending someone, or straying from a progressive narrative. Your characters have to suffer in order to grow, and they must grow to have a story arc worth following.

      Sounds right to me. Everything good in their lives (assuming I'm a good author and that's a big one but bear with me here) they earned themselves. (At least in their own eyes) Everything bad? That's on me. (Perhaps a few might internalize some mistakes of theirs, but they'll still have plenty of beef with me over other things.) If you can't see them suffer, make them struggle and earn it? You are in the wrong business.

      I'm not sure I agree, Doctor Doom steals every Fantastic Four story he appears in. He's got it all, interesting character, definite motivations and a moral gray area, he's got layers. The FF are kind of dull except for Ben Grimm but he's still a pretty simple character.
      Maybe FF is the exception though not the rule but I would argue that if you took away the Joker then Batman would be pretty boring too.

    Guess I'm doing this again.
    28:04 - And how is the author supposed to position themselves as the judge of society (and its ills) if the -mouthpiece- character they're using as a soapbox is fundamentally flawed? Basically, the character is 'perfect' or at least has no major flaws in order to give the author a position of strength from which to critique society. Though it's even worse than that. Why? Because to a SJW, doubting 'the truth', self-critique, and personal skepticism of their core beliefs isn't possible. Why? Because it's a belief that, by its nature, can't be doubted because to doubt it is to stop believing it. Period.
    Now, as any author would tell you (George Martin as the latest one) your characters will typically surprise you. They'll do things that even you as the author had not intended nor expected them to do. Why? Well, besides the fact that your characters draw from different aspects of your own personality and are thus not entirely consciously dictated (predetermined), it has to do with the writing method itself. Essentially, good character writing is exploratory. A good character acts as a hypothesis of sorts: a presupposition of what is right or good or just or whatever else. Then by putting this character into situations which test these presuppositions (otherwise known as his principles) we can see them wax and wane and even shift. Thus we're able to evolve an idea through fiction as opposed to bitter experience, saving us the time and effort and suffering of testing it out ourselves. Which makes good character writing a work of moral counsel at best and a cautionary tale at worst. But what's key to good character writing is precisely what's lacking from SJW Marvel: hypothesis but more personally, humility.
    See, in order to utilize a character to _explore_ the human condition, to _test_ your own principles through them, you have to adopt a position of humility. You have to suppose that your principles are flawed or downright wrong. Then with that in mind you test them out through fictional scenarios which strain them until they break, thus teaching yourself and the reader why such principles are flawed. Though better yet, the solution is often presented through the character himself and entirely unintentionally. The character, having grown a 'mind of their own', presents the solution by simply adhering to precisely what his personality would dictate i.e. what he has matured into. This is why you can ask in earnest, "What would Batman do?" and have a ready-made answer. Ditto that with Superman and, topically, their actions would be similar but different. Because their principles are different. Because they are avatars of different moral systems.
    Though you'll note that it's not always a moral matter. The concept of 'badass' or topically 'a _real_ man' can be strained in the same fashion in order to better evolve your understanding of what such terms should truly mean. Think of it like increasing the resolution of an image: adding more data in an organized fashion which supports the whole.
    So that said, in contrast to writing from a position of humility, SJW Marvel authors write from a position of presupposed authority. So rather than using a character to entertain a thesis, to present and to test a hypothesis, they use the character to dictate a conclusion. With that their character isn't prone to evolve in any real fashion -one that would have them deviate from the dictates of the author. Rather, the only evolution they usually undergo is by matters of scale i.e. greater and lesser. Basically, they may come to believe the core dictate more and more or just a little less. Which only serves to demonstrate that the expression of the belief can be malformed, either too much or too little, yet that the belief itself is nevertheless still 'true' or 'right' in a moral sense.
    Once again, this is a result of SJWs rejecting the concept of achievement and with it, standards (I refer you to my comment in the first video of this great series). So such that SJW beliefs are not achieved (through a system of logic or evidence) but rather presupposed, the concept of testing them becomes absurd. Quite literally, you cannot test that which cannot be proven and need not be proven. See, if it only 'is', if it 'just exists', then testing doesn't prove it. Basically, testing assumes that something can be wrong or needs to meet a standard of proof. So insofar as SJWs believe that their beliefs are absolutely true, that they are an 'is', SJWs will not entertain any possibility otherwise. Thus they cannot adopt a position of humility and so with that write good characters, because they won't submit their beliefs to any system which could potentially invalidate them. Because the very idea of invalidation, of a system of belief (standard) which excludes and rejects, is precisely what they've set themselves AGAINST.
    Again topically, it's like how SJWs no longer need to meet any standard for their self-identified 'gender'. They won't submit to any standard (definition) which could potentially invalidate them (by virtue of them not achieving the requirements) and so they stick with their own presupposed belief. Which is why you'll never see a SJW character explore 'what it means to be a woman'. Well, at least not without her discovering that 'any and all personal definitions are acceptable and the only thing that isn't acceptable is excluding anyone from defining as a woman'. For the philosophically minded of you, this transforms the concept of 'definition' strictly into an 'affirmative-only' concept. Which is to say, you can only state that which makes someone 'X thing' rather than what makes someone 'not X thing'. So all potential requirements are in a state of 'sufficient but not necessary' which means you can have any assortment of requirements and don't need any in particular. A state of pure potential, of anything and everything essentially. Hence gender trending into infinity as well as all the different means by which 'woman' can be expressed to an SJW i.e. in any fashion at all, no EXCLUSIONS.
    Bringing it back to something more familiar for most of you, this is an effect of, or even a cause of, the 'everyone is a winner' mentality. Since you can only win (get/be the thing you want) and no one can fail at this, it places 'winner' (or whatever thing) into an affirmative-only state. So since there's no way not to be the thing in question, and so long as you want to be the thing in question, you simply self-declare that you are and just like that, you are. There's no need to meet a standard. There's no way to achieve it, even. You just 'win'. You just 'are'.
    So as the super hero, you just get super powers.
    So as the SJW, you just know what's good and moral.
    So as the SJW author, you just know what your character will do.
    You just know.
    And as you said, where there's no errors, there's no (shared) humanity. Just the dictates of ONE PERSON. One ideology.
    //For the REALLY philosophically minded of you, note that the SJW (ironic) rejection of exclusion is really just the rejection of any synthetic justifications, relying solely on the purely analytic form of justification. So to the SJW, experience (objective metrics) can't prove anything nor supply meaning and neither does any belief have to fit into nor form together into a cogent model of reality (see: logic and reason). Though this comes with the caveat that by rejecting synthetic justifications they also reject any external system of definition (systems of language). Meaning that the 'analytic' aspect refers only to their own personal definitions, not the dictionary definition of words/concepts. Which reduces their beliefs to a state of pure presupposition -axiomatic even. Contingent only on the fact that the terms which they use USED TO HAVE (general) meaning; having now become 'hollowed out' -vessels for any potential personal definition/use. Hence why anything proposed analytically a priori is _likely_ to be accepted by the SJW while anything proposed synthetically a priori or a posteriori (or relies on any such metric) will be rejected. Examples of which you can find yourself, especially in their disagreements with non-SJWs typically interpreted as a disagreement on definition or other language barrier i.e. the meaning lost in translation. Which they are, it's just much more fundamental than most (can) recognize. And once again, it's more evidence of an immature mind/psychological structure. Basically, they are rejecting the incorporation of that which disproves/displeases them. They are rejecting limitation as a necessary characteristic of, really, everything.//

      Something to add about that last paragraph. Objective metrics, and analytic statements are Universals. While synthetic justifications tend towards being Existentials, noting that without three basic justifications, we cannot begin to deal with any statements, let alone Universal ones. I EXIST; my Perceptions EXISTS; and there EXISTS justifications thereupon.
      If we break those down we readily become radically cynical, relativist, or nihilist. A common pattern it seems.
      Ironically, being existential, or having these existential assumptions-justifications, we have faith in a better world, moral people, and good practices. Unfortunately this lands you in the realm of convention, conservation, religion-- Something regularly attacked by outright cynics, and relativists. A STRANGE COINCIDENCE!?
      So do good heros, and great evils exist? Yes. Are they universal? No. What should be universal is their existence. Otherwise we have nothing, especially no heroes.

    You know? When you mentioned that Riri's big trauma was "Family member and friend die in random shootout during a picnic at a park," my mind immediately went to The Punisher.
    Admittedly, that would be a fairly interesting story and wouldn't require much of a change to her backstory, with the possible exception of a superhero showing up far too late to actually help. Of course, making Riri "The Punisher but Iron Man" would drastically change the tone of the Animax fight and definitely would alter the meeting with Stark, if that scene is kept in. Historically, one of Stark's big berserk buttons is "my technology is being used for evil," after all.

    Another retcon (going with your villain obsessed Riri) - She could’ve tried to help out, and take over, the local gangs by improving their technology beyond the police’s capacity to fight and as such, the entire neighbourhood comes under the rule of crime.
    Riri doesn’t care as she actually plans most gang wars and crimes in remote or low-risk areas and believes she profits from this simulated system.
    However this illusion of control shatters because of the one thing Riri can not predict, or even understand, the human factor. A gang war breaks out near Riri’s new living accommodations, killing her Step-dad and Best Friend.
    And to change that jab at men, her Best Friend could be instead warning her at that very moment that anything bad could happen and that people are unpredictable to Riri’s casual dismissal - and later dismay.
    (Possible retcons;
    • it’s her mom that dies and so she is at odds with her more lenient step dad;
    • Riri is shown not to have problems with friends because, ironically, those friends (apart from the best friend) are using her smarts for selfish gain;
    • (feel free to add any)
    What do you think? Too far fetched?
    Oh and as to flaws:
    • Riri develops an obsession with lawful heroism (to the point of being angry and then afraid to use underhanded ways to fight evil - which would put her at odds with the modern Iron Man);
    • Obsession with predicting the unpredictability of humans (to the point of being afraid to carry out plans, making friends and hesitating during action sequences - which would be a flaw that is directly in conflict with her mentor’s personality and would make for some believable character development and interesting action sequences);
    • faces an intense guilt which makes her hallucinate Natalie’s voice in her head constantly (and is at odds with it as she tries to reconcile her heroics everyday actions with the voice’s need for her to stay safe, and constant criticism)

How many villains give a story like that in their motivation rant? The kind where they assume an actual hero with vaguely similar background will understand them and take their side. But then the hero simply points out that 'You could have done good. Instead you became selfish.' before they're defeated. Cue obsession with showing up the hero/revenge for their defeat/proving the hero is no better, ect.

    Funny you should talk about how Riri could instead idolise villains, because she really does act like one. A lot of Iron Man's early villains were defined by stealing Tony's suit technology and repurposing it to their own ends, which is precisely what Riri did. If Tony (even holo!Tony) was in any way in-character, he'd be a LOT more tense about this, no matter how much potential she might have.
    Honestly, back when I was reading this series/trainwreck, I didn't once feel that Riri was being set on a path to be the next great hero, it felt more like watching the birth of a more soulless and unlikable Doctor Doom... but that would be a bit too interesting to follow, wouldn't it?
    On a different note, one thing I've noticed from reading older comics is that SO MUCH HAPPENS in a single issue. You can get a lot of information for a character moment or plot progression on a single page. With many current comics, everything from the plot to the panels are spaced out with so little to really say that it's plainly obvious the people working on it are only thinking of the trade paperback its going to be part of. It's honestly a little frustrating, considering how much these books can cost. Why even collect anymore? :/

      Bored. But the key diference between Saitama and riri is that he's suffering from being too good: no challenges, no passion, no fun, no foe that can beat him.
      Riri doesn't suffer from being too good: everyone blows her ego into oblivion, the "but mooooom" argument works, almost like a bad fanfic-oh, right, it is.
      Saitama worked hard, hyped, to be too good, and the irony that it ended in a boring life is really funny, wich works, because One Punch Man is an action-comedy story
      Riri did nothing to get her intellect, nor her gadgets, nor her friend. She's a plain, "perfect" character that has no flaws, like she's from a fanfic-oh, right, it is a fanfiction.

    Oh damn...I just now realized that Iron Man: Armored Adventures (Nickelodeon Show from 2009) is basically an NPC marvel series. (Which doesn't surprise me because it only got made to cash-in on the success of the Iron Man Movie.)
    Y'know how Tony Stark's character is that he's a self-centered, alcoholic, weapons-designing, play-boy? And how his story in the comics and the movie is a traumatic event involving being captured and tortured in a cave, needing to build an armored-suit to escape, and thus realizing he should use his genius for better things apart from explosions and money? All of that made him an interesting character right?
    Yeah...Armored Adventures Tony doesn't have that...because he's a teenager in that series. So yeah, he couldn't have the vices of being an alcoholic - but he could still be a self-centered, play-boy, considering that he's also going to be a super-genius...But nope; Tony is basically a saint in this series...and it makes him kind of bland.
    There's no tragedy that brings on the creation of the Iron Man suit...literally the first scene of the pilot episode, is showing him completing the Iron Man suit and showing it to Rhodey...and why has he built this thing? ...Because.
    In fact, the "tragedy" that occurs that was originally the catalyst for Tony Stark's journey in any other media, has very little relevance for him. In fact, not only does it happen after he's already built the suit, but the only thing it actually does establish is that, his dad "might" have been killed, and Obediah Stane has taken over Stark Industries - so now Tony lives with Rhodey and his mom. And the "arc" reactor in his chest, has nothing to do with the Iron Man Suit; it's just a glorified pace-maker.
    The series was still entertaining as it is...particularly when they started introducing cross-over characters, like Dr. Doom, Magneto, and other villains...Was my introduction to Black Panther, and got me excited for the movie...until 2016 happened.

    While it may only be slightly relevant, I do get a small impression that Riri's 1st page is "drawn" as if its basically a storyboard representation of a movie scene - while Spider-Man's 1st page is "drawn" as a...well...comic. Could this have something to do with it? That the modern day Marvel (and partly DC) movie presentation of superhero stories / take on superheroes, have become so ingrained in the minds of not only readers and viewers, but also comic artists - that adaptation from one medium to another have literally turned around? That comics start seeming like comic book adaptations of a movie story...? Because there is a lot of elements that don't transfer well, and can give 9dd, sometimes awful results.

    Liking Super Villains would actually have captured my interest, I love Redemption stories. Especially ones where the character has to struggle and suffer in order to change, but perseveres in the face of adversity if only barely or not even by their own power and fortitude. A character that becomes broken and has to lean upon another to find meaning can have issues, but also could really capture interest in that the social dynamic gives me a reason to care more about the work as a whole because there's one more meaningful character and the relationship itself if dynamic can capture my attention. Love your analysis dude. The name I'll admit I'm adverse to, but I have to admit you do some great and honestly useful work.

      From what I have seen, DC seems to have a different infection, dark and grittiness. From some videos I have watched, the higher ups at DC just want everything to be dark and gritty and psychological, no happiness, no marriage, no children, just cool, edgy darkness. From what I have seen, they even are trying to say Superman is Superman because of some deep seated abandonment issues or some shit, not merely that he is just a good person. Of course, the Wonder Woman writer, who I think made Khamala Khan, wants to bring politics into the story so there is a possibility of it infecting DC as well but so far they just have the "Dark and Edgy" bug.

    suffering is essential to building a heroic character, as we as the audience need to see the character grow into the hero they're destined to be. However, modern comics are just trying to showcase characters that are virtuous and outstanding without any trials that aid their growth, essentially transforming them into a hero inside and out

    Can I just say that it's so poetic that the sign saying "Radioactive activity Demonstration this way" is in the last panel of the page, acting as the "Turn page" box that is in many comics.
    Also, you could probably even just have Riri try and stop the gang bangers from doing the shootout, since she's supposed to be obssessed with Heroes, but Natalie being the level-headed ground wire in their relationship quickly stops her and pays the price for it. This shocks Riri, and her parents tell her to run, and when her step-dad comes over to try and pull Natalie and Riri away, her Step-dad also ends up getting shot due to Riri's recklessness and inability to truly understand the gravity of the situation. Her transformation could then come as a result of the tragedy, where she pulls a Daredevil and starts hunting down the people who killed her Friend and Step-father

    Character growth is something that I fight with on a regular basis when it comes to my own writing. It's a really tough balancing act to shape the world to give the protagonist their struggles, but also to keep enough wiggle room to make it clear that their troubles are cemented by the protagonist's own choices.
    It's bizarre to see these writers profess for Character-Driven plots (plots that I've sunken my whole being into) and then have no actual point driven by the character. It's literally the opposite, their new protagonists are just reacting to the world around them. The "Character" does not "Drive" the plot forward.
