In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to the new single from Marillion's upcoming new album. The song is Be Hard on Yourself, and the album is called An Hour Before It's Dark. I continue to be impressed with this band's social commentary and expert musicianship. This song is a real masterpiece and a call to arms to address the Climate Crisis. I very much enjoyed this listen. I hope you enjoy as well.

I'm being completely serious now, Doug. Tickets are on sale for the 2022 Marillion Weekend in Montreal, July 1-3, 2022. Great summer, great city, great fans, great music. I'll buy you a drink! You could upload remotely. These guys are well over 60 years old and won't be the same in a few years. In 1989 Marillion recorded a song called Seasons End. which was about how they saw climate change occurring and their fears for the future. It's available on UA-cam as a live track with Their Friends from the Orchestra and is probably the best version of the song they have done. Having seen your reaction to Estonia, I suspect you'd love it.

Huge Marillion fan here. And it was a while to wait for the album An Hour Before It's Dark. But it was worth waiting for!
I found the song Sierra Leone to be the best song on this album. Maybe not based on the lyrics, but the composition and the quality of the musicians probably sums up Marillions best moment with Hogarth.

Doug...Already a prog-head and huge Genesis fan, getting into Marillion's first album, Script For A Jester's Tear" (1982), could not have happened more naturally and, as Steve Hogarth told you in your excellent interview with him...Marillion has been pointed and political since the beginning. Look up "Forgotten Sons" and you'll see.

Thanks for this. I really appreciate your help in finding even more nuances and subtleties in Marillion! They are indeed a great band, and I am sorry I missed out on so much of their work after the Fish era.

Thanks Doug - nice analysis of the song and thanks for sharing your emotions about this song. In general it is not too late to stop forgiving yourself, but to start to put the foot down and really do something about our negativ impact on our planet - if we want to last a bit longer as humans. Everyone can make an impact, we do not need to wait for the so called leaders. And it is Marillion that gives us a powerful piece of music and lyrics, more than a nudge. They get the message and music right (occasionally;) as the probably would say). That is the beauty of this band's craftsmanship - they share their souls with you and that is what connects you to the band.

Marillion are from Wiltshire, a county in the UK, there were many bands from there that formed in the late 1970's

I joined your channel quite a time ago because I like listening to music professionals analyzing the structure of music but it's been a long while that I don't know if I enjoy more your analysis of music or lyrics. You would stand your ground as a literature teacher, captain, my captain.

When I meet God. Not one is put out there often but worth a listen. Sorry I am gushing..... first time I have seen your channel, and I love the breakdown of the music as well although I cannot read music notes due to my type of dyslexia. Thankyou.

Amazing track. Hogarth's vocals have always been amazing, very emotional, but with age I think he acquired a bit of grit that just made his voice even better for Marillion, giving it this quality you mentioned of being both powerful and vulnerable at the same time.

You given me an insight into a track I struggled with at first. Steve Hogarth feels it is the weakest track on the album. It's going to be great. The new song murder machines along with the video is a short rock song but powerful in its sentiment.

If you liked this, you'll love the next new song, "Murder Machines", that they just released on a video for on UA-cam. For this video, Steve H *really* gets in our faces with his anger and vulnerability. Maybe you can do that one next month when the album is released.
