Marillion are loved world wide, I believe they invented crowd funding. They once back in the 90’s announced a new album tour and the USA was not part of the itinerary due to the expense. The American Marillion fan base (without band provocation) raised enough money for them to get to the USA and the rest is music history.

I think composition-wise Ocean Cloud suffers a bit from the same problem as the New Kings does in places, in that some of the transititions to new sections are less than subtle... it's almost like a straight cut or a hard switch here and there (this always has been a bit of a problem with many of their long-tracks)... in my honest opinion they have more deserving songs (Neverland indeed, yes - but also Quartz, Power, the Great Escape, Berlin, Happiness is the Road, White Paper. this is the 21st Century (*pointless end-noodling aside hehe), Montreal, yadda yadda - not to mention some of the great Fish-era stuff like Fugazi, Incubus and White Russian - all these are pure class from start to finish*

The first four albums are with the charismatic Scottish singer Fish and then he left and Steve Hogarth took over taking them in a different direction but both eras have lots to offer. I would recommend a further reaction to Marillion on Seasons End, Splintering Heart, The Space live at The Albert Hall and with Fish on Hotel Hobbies/Warm Wet Circles/That time of The Night Trilogy. That engine noise in the final section is a spitfire aka Battle of Britain is referring to the last time the British people joined together to meet a common threat and that we would be unlikely to do that in modern times because the world has changed to everyone for themselves. I think the crash in section 3 is the 2008 financial crash and questions if it was actually a manufactured crisis which allowed some folks to make a lot of money from it. I’m British and I’m seeing this song from a brit band in a very British perspective though. I bought my first Marillion album in spring 83 just before joining the army and it helped a lot to get through this. Saw them a lot of times here in France and in Switzerland and they are always more than brilliants. I love both Fish & H eras. Their discography is pretty huge with few downs and a lot of highs. And even, less good albums reveal their moments of grace anyway. This particular tune show that we're not alone in France to feel like orphans of our country and of our leaders. Thank you for sharing your feels to the song Keep up the good work Doug ! Really appreciated

    Hi Doug.
Glad you had a chance to experience Marillion at this level.
I've been following them since the mid-80's and they have become one of my, if not my, favorite band[s].
They're leaders in a variety of ancillary fields:
    • They're one of , if not the, first bands to: go online/have a website that they control
    • Crowd-fund both their studio work and their concerts
    • Now crowd-funding their INSURANCE for cancellations due to Covid/illnesses/unforeseen catastrophic events [with a refund policy to boot]
    • Hold fan-specific events - Marillion Weekend - across the globe, etc.
    • They also took complete control of their work by ending their contracts with the music industry and taking everything in-house
Additionally, they have nearly ALL of the concerts they've performed over the past two+ decades available for download via their website. Yes, you have to pay for them but they're worth it. You get to hear and experience a band night after night playing to audiences across the world, hear the band's interactions and uncompromising musicality and abilities, the mistakes, the goofiness and, frankly, the love they share with and for their audiences.
Paul Burton: I agree with your comment on Rothery. Spot-on.
Ditto to Lou D: I'm fairly certain you're correct: they invented crowd-funding
ChrisEchoes: Absolutely see them LIVE! Even if it's just one of their DVDs. They're fantastic. Some of the most emotional work you will witness.
Cheers for your wonderful and expert review of Marillion.
As Nathan wrote below: All the best freaks are here [look that up...]

Not sure if you read any of our comments Doug, but I will let you into a secret about Marillion. Unlike most bands, Marillion never sit down and actually write a 'song'. They jam, and Mike Hunter the band's producer, takes all of the hours and hours of material away and selects the 'best bits' for the band to craft into a cohesive piece of music. As a fan of 38 years standing, much of the Steve Hogarth era can take a while to get used to because of this recording method. Once I get my brain around the abrupt changes of tempo, the songs will make sense, but it can take a while and multiple plays until it gels. Still, apart from Nightwish, they have been my favourite band since 1983, and I have funded three of their albums before a note was written! Thanks for taking the time to listen to their work, I would recommend listening to 'This Strange Engine' or 'The Invisible Man' for future analysis. Cheers from Blighty!

Marillion, the soundtrack of my years. An interesting first choice of song, and probably not one the fans of either era of the band would have been clamouring for, but it does represent very well where the band is at now. Like Rush in the 1980's Marillion is a band that became much better at writing and arranging as they became less overtly complex and showy. I would add my voice to those suggesting Ocean Cloud and This Strange Engine for further exploration. The Brave album is a masterpiece but probably not instantly digestible. From the Fish era of the band, the Hotel Hobbies, Warm Wet Circles, That Time of the Night trilogy is easily the most cohesive and expressive writing the band produced during that period.
