- Katanga Slum, Uganda (When you see this . . .)
Today I went to visit, film and document Katanga Slum, a well known slum in Kampala, Uganda. Even before I arrived in Katanga Slum the scenery was amazing as we snaked our way through the crowds of workers, pedestrians vendors and automobiles all fighting for space on the bustling streets of the city.
As soon as I got to Katanga slum a large family wanted to talk to me. This drew a lot of interest from the surrounding people and many more people wanted to be filmed and share their thoughts and feelings with the world. I thought they all had a unique perspective. Katanga Slum is an interesting place which presents an interesting set of challenges for anyone living there.
After chatting with some people some local kids guided us through Katanga slum. It's like walking through a maze if you've never been there before. The narrow pathways were lined with shanties and improvised structures that served as these people's homes. Despite how appalling these living conditions look, the people were very welcoming and kind and were very eager to talk and share their stories on camera. I was really touched by the humbleness and gentle nature of the people of Katanga Slum.

I liked his message to the world saying "work hard so you don't become a thief." because it's true.
it's the poor countries that depend on the rest of the world to work hard so they can survive on the trash.😞
It's usually the Boss who is the Thief

Every person in uk should watch this video. Maybe we're not as bad off as we think.
I could learn a lot also from these beautiful people😊 I'm a Canadian and I'm so grateful.
There are many NGOs and other groups that you can donate to, for example, to help that woman pay her school fees and uniforms for her kids. You can find many on line and then research to make sure they are real and also see how much of the donated money gets to the people vs. management expenses.

And those children that Ryan filmed around that mother that was cooking for the community were so cute and well groomed. They had gleaming faces, and it took the sadness that I initially had watching the video away just a bit.
They are poor but what a difference between them and the the drugged out and drunk on the streets of Pittsburg, or LA

You are very kind and respectful to the local community.

@ Michael. Well said. This video is unsettling. I started to watch, but stopped as I realised that it is exploitative voyeurism. There appears to be no point to this film other than youtube coin. I think this brave white explorer would do better to address his own home neighbourhood and community.
@ Michael. Agreed.
Definitely I love his ways
Kindness is necessary as a human.
I cant believe that ugandas people are fluent in english...such amazing people...as u can see all of them smiling even if theres a lot of struggles and being poorest of the poor
Indeed Uganda is a pearl, such amazing people
i live in the west, after watching this video i realize how lucky i am that i have free education and free health. people are still suffering from depression despite having all this. Wealth is very relative

People with class, dignity, and willing and able to work that still have goals and dreams. You found the beauty there!
There are two types of class: the system of ordering a society in which people are divided into sets based on perceived social or economic status. (some people in that category are really quite classless)
And there is the class that denotes excellence. These people fit into the latter category .
The thing that holds them up, that gives them beauty, is the love and support system that renews their self -respect and dignity. Take that away from them over and over again in any condition and you will see how quickly they degenerate and lose their sense of self; we should not make their lives romantic novels; their lives are not desirable.
But as humans, their collective sense of dignity is admirable; if you strip them of that by your action, you will see that that lowest common denominator that is present in every human being will reveal itself.
It breaks my heart to see my people living like this. Yet, they are so optimistic god bless them all
Thank you for the respect and consideration that you treated people!👏👏👏👍🏼🙏
That’s why I prefer to stay in my home district and village. Life is easier there with your farmland, but most people go to live in Kampala under such conditions.
Agreed. There is still this lure of the city despite the conditions being so terrible. Surely the village is preferable?
To be successful I life, it requires you to get out of your comfort zone and struggle. They are not in kampala because they don't like their villages, they are there to look for opportunities.
@@IceFloe. well, how they are living certainly doesn’t seem to look better than what they have left behind. That’s when you go to base and restrategise.
Those children were so darned cute! Such bright smiles. My favorite person was the woman who was cooking outside of her small, small hotel. She seemed very friendly. Also, the lady with the radio had a beautiful smile. It’s sucks that they live in such abject poverty.
Unfortunately, that's our true Africa for you.. we are the ones living it in the whole of African countries, no exceptions at all.. Thanx for your love for us... We appreciate
Yeah total shithole
This reminds me of how South Korea looked when I lived there, in the 1960s and 1970s. This was an EXCELLENT, sensitively wrought film.
I just love the people of Uganda. So hardworking, friendly, welcoming, humble and respectful people ❤.
God bless the people of Uganda!!!
Lol... they are not hardworking or respectful. Are you aware of the cultural practices in Uganda? Lol
This is Uganda's version of what could have been homelessness in developed countries, but because there are no laws to impede them, they form a kind of community that protect each other.
Glad u got it figured out
Absolutely!
Notice any drug use? I've never seen homeless children playing together or alone on US street encampments.
Also our way of building poor communities in my country, we build on empty lands to avoid homelessness, then they call us SQUATTERS,/GHETTOS/ but who cares, we are hard working and happy peoples, .FAMILIES STAY IN YOUR COUNTRY AND BUILD YOURSELVES, BECAUSE FOREIGN LIFE IS A DOGS LIFE, NOT PEDIGREES, but mongrels dogs. So be happy with what you have, at least you are amongst families and friends.
Yeah, thats actually true...
Maggie, such a pure soul and personality. You can see it in her eyes that she has a dream. I hope the nothing but the best for her. I want to help support and donate.
The real problem would be getting any donation money anywhere near her. You'd have to go through rather unscrupulous means, and the money could very likely be stolen along the way.
I’m English and have been to a slum in Kampala,it was a eye opener that’s for sure, very kind friendly loving people who live there,I love Uganda 🇺🇬
My favorite person in the video is the young lady that showed her living room and bedroom. Also, the articulate teenage girls towards the end of the video. the living conditions are unbelievable, as this is the 21st century. I have watched this video several times. forever changed. Thank you.
No person deserves to live like these beautiful people. They all want the same as we want in our countries.
Hopefully Ryan took his anti-malaria pills.
Only if you knew
They don't take their trash out very often,so the place is disgusting.
That's why their called 3rd world countries. Be thankful if you don't live in one.
Unlike the US poor these people want to work and learn, much of our poor that live in encampments don't want to be housed, employed, or sober. I mean you can not give it to them, they are finished with this economy. Used to be one week's pay would pay for your rent now it's 20 days pay.
They may be poor but they have love and look out for each other. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Beats people who have money and are miserable
Go to live there, i wont
Ohh PEOPLE have money are all tools1
They have their shit relatively together. They learn resourcefulness and humility. The difference between these areas and some of the shittiest avenues in the US is that these areas never once had a semi-thriving developed town to begin with. They are also not running around like meth heads left and right yelling at invisible people. They calmly address their conversations with focus and respect. Sure, things may not always be like that off camera but many third world areas you go the people are able to afford some sense of mannerism at least when the camera is on. Try filming some rock bottom heads 'in their habitat', it will look like a parody.
@@Magneticitist Also, the more money, the less mannerisms. Privileged people are pretty much always arrogant. They can't bear to deal with the slightest inconvenience. Inconvenience is a way of life for poor people so they handle it well. And one can easily become the other. It's all a matter of perspective.

Thank you so much for this document. Beautiful people living in harsh conditions with dignity.
I've never been to Uganda but I have been to other poor countries around the world. In my experience, poor people are the most hospitable and the most generous. My most dearest most valuable possessions I have are the little gifts people have given me along my journey. Little things like beads, shells or a small coin or carving. I spent a short time with a rickshaw runner, he gave me his bell. I was given a tiny bible written in Tamil. I can't read it but I treasure it just the same. I've given many tiny little things also such as a glass jar a family wanted after I finished the peanut butter. It's been decades ago but these "trinkets" adorn my desk and I always think of them. I'm pretty certain they all think of me the same way. Although we're separated by great distances we'll ALWAYS be connected.

There something so wholesome and sweet about these people.
When American slums look like upper class compared to Uganda. When extreme poverty in Uganda has more character and morals even though they are even more desperate people than in American slums. Don't forget....they get no welfare no food stamps or free medical on top of it all. Bottom line....you either make good honest choices or bad ones......the choice is always in your power no matter if your rich or poor.....live in a high rise or in the slums. You act...what you are. Class act these people.
Well said!
When extreme poverty in Uganda has more character and morals than the entirety of America, rich or poor. Where wealthy, privileged people have the choice to be good people but choose not to. No one can blame a starving person for doing whatever it takes to eat.
The children are SO beautiful bless them.
