You fucking nailed it. From what I've read, the whole song is representative of a drug trip. The beautiful part that slowly leads to the building represents the initial injection of the drug of choice. You get the euphoria for just a little bit. Then, the cravings start (the buildup). That explosion is the manic part of the trip, where the drug has worn off and chaos comes back. It's a cry for help where the puppet sees no escape and is questioning the lies it was told. This is so fun to sing at karaoke. It's just awkward standing on stage while the instrumentals play out.

I absolutely love how James pays tribute to Cliff in this version. They were asked in an interview when this album came out, what James said after the bridge? Cliff responded with a straight face "Pancakes! He says pancakes."

This is from there live performance movie “Thru the Never” its really good. Yes this song is about a specific addiction hence the line “chop your breakfast on a mirror” also i loved how the album cover for master of puppets came to life during the guitar solo!!!!
The 'addiction' can also be to mental addiction to something like a cult, deserving of abuse but hating it, etc. I might not remember correct, but in the past I think I remember why the song has 'phases': the first is because the addict 'needs more', the 2nd is the addict getting the 'fix', then the 3rd realization the 'why do I do this! i know this is bad' followed by 4) the closing act. Another Mighty Met feel free to correct me. Thanks and blessings to all those facing addictions of all kinds.
Great reaction, beautiful and extremely competent therapist... I would like to see you analyze the lyrics of another exceptional song that is also on the masterpiece "Master of Puppets" (Metallica's 1986 album): the epic song is "The Thing That Should Not Be"...
Exactly what this song is about. Anyone can hear that listen to the song. But I also thought anyone over 20 had heard of,or know this song. How could you not?????
@@skarlottt..... i'm afraid not... James Hetfield, of Metallica, explained in a 1988 interview with Thrasher magazine that “Master of Puppets” “deals pretty much with drugs. the song The God That Failed is the one you are probably thinking of.
The arrangement of the song can be attributed to the phases 9f drug addiction. The first part is heavy and driving representing the want/need/search for the drug. The second part that is clean and beautiful is the taking of the drug. It's peacful and serene. Then the third part is the out of control crash and frantic, anxiety of search for more. At least that's how I see it.

Master of Puppets is about.Control and Manipulation: The title itself suggests that someone or something is pulling the strings, controlling the protagonist. In this case, it’s drugs. The “Master of Puppets” represents addiction, which manipulates and controls the user’s life. Addiction’s Grip: Lines like “Taste me, you will see, more is all you need, dedicated to, how I’m killing you” emphasize the allure of drugs and how they consume the user’s existence. The craving for more becomes insatiable. Physical and Mental Decay: “Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams” highlights the mental and emotional toll of addiction. Dreams are shattered, and the mind is distorted. Inevitable Demise: The chorus warns, “Master! Master! Where’s the dreams that I’ve been after? Master! Master! You promised only lies.” The promises of escape and euphoria from drugs turn out to be lies, leading to a tragic end. Fatal Consequences: The final lines, “Just call my name, 'cause I’ll hear you scream, Master! Master!” evoke a sense of doom. The protagonist is trapped, and the master (addiction) ultimately leads to their demise.James Hetfield, the frontman of Metallica, explained in a 1988 interview with Thrasher magazine that “Master of Puppets” “deals pretty much with drugs. How things get switched around, instead of you controlling what you’re taking and doing it’s drugs controlling you.
The song is a perfect portrayal of Narcissistic Abuse involving emotional manipulation. It evokes the confusion and helplessness one feels when in an emotionally abusive relationship. Music is the secret power, a gift you can draw resilience and courage from to get out of the madness of emotional abuse.
It would be really cool for you, to go and just watch the live performance of this song in 2024 in Munich Germany. It is posted on the official metallica UA-cam channel, this song is performed in the pouring rain. There is standing water on the floor all over them on the instruments and they still executed to perfection. I really wish that you could react to that on this channel, it would be great to see your take on how epic this band is.
Please listen to Fade to Black! Especially their live performance at Lollapalooza, Chicago 7/28/22. James has a great message in the middle of the song, as a lifelong Metallica fan it brought tears to my eyes.
The verses are the drug and the user speaking separately. The musical traditions are the mental transformations. The first and third verses are the drug and the middle is the user. So he’s “surrounded”. The first bridge is soft and the second is hard because it gets worse. The big thing to remember is this was written in ‘86. They made some of their best stuff when they were very young.
We should ABSOLUTELY make her watch the entire movie! I love her surprised face, her stank face, and all of the other reactions - especially the commentary! 🤘🏼😆
the soft guitar part is the high you feel when you take the drugs, slowly fading and you fall back into needing more. thats why the music starts to get more and more aggressive, the lyrics after that are kinda desperation and disappointment. edit the master is the drugs and the puppets are the ppl using it btw for ppl that dont understand :)
LOVE your channel. The entire album was about various masters to puppets. This song served 2 purposes since it is also the name of the album. Yes, this is about drugs and the "pretty portion" of the song is about taking the drugs and enjoying the trip. But all the other songs are masters too: military sending you to die, religion, mental health system, irrational fear.... All the other songs are masters too if you listen to them in the main theme of the album. So is the album cover art.

When I finally kicked my opioid habit that I developed in college (haven't used opioid in 15 years now) and after a few years of adapting/recovering into an addiction free healthier lifestyle... I still occasionally missed aspects of that lifestyle in some kind of perverse way that I didn't understand at first (I was never an IV user which I think was a factor). Eventually I realized that a big part of it was just missing the constant action especially since I had to temporarily/permanently cut about a quarter of my social circle out of my life at the time and it took me awhile to find hobbies/activities that piqued my interest enough to replace all the time I had spent "partying". I also didn't realize how much I relied on drugs and alcohol allowed me to comfortably socialize in larger groups especially with people I didn't know. There's a reason why people call alcohol a social lubricant, but there's a difference between 1-2 drinks on social occasions every few weeks and getting drunk every time you go out. In smaller group settings or when I knew most of the people around me I was perfectly comfortable and even thrived socially without any need for drugs/alcohol, but it took me awhile to learn how to be that comfortable and occasionally uninhibited enough to have a little fun acting/looking "foolish" (like dancing and singing all of the words to the songs at a concert by myself) without drugs/alcohol to help silence my overthinking and overly pessimistic inner critic. The ritual is one of the reasons addictions can be so difficult to quit. Like I said I would have perverse almost nostalgic moments about chopping up lines of oxycontin and for years almost every time I opened my wallet the smell of dollar bills ignited sensory memory (that still occasionally happens 15 years later). After years of therapy, finally getting an ADHD diagnosis and proper treatment (I had a 4.0 GPA from primary school through my Masters Degree in Teacher Leadership/Development Psychology and apparently kids with ADHD who do well academically are commonly under diagnosed even if they display the vast majority of the potential behavioral issues associated with the disorder)... I finally started to understand some of the why behind these behaviors I found so confusing. Delving into Jungian psychology in the same year I started practicing secular meditation allowed me to gain so much insight into the parts of the human experience and human behavior that I found so puzzling. I also did psychedelic assisted therapy around that time which I'm sure played a part because it provided perspective in addition to neuroplasticity... I feel like it's important to mention that as someone who is a "recovering addict", however this was strictly medicinal even though I was excited about having the experience. Apologies for all of the elliptical asides although I am now properly treated for my ADHD it really helps, but doesn't eliminate feeling like I need to over explain which I just realized is what I'm doing right now so I'll end on that note. If you got this far I hope you found something about my comment interesting or meaningful or relatable...
It’s hard for me to watch Metallica reactions because of personal experience with seeing them live but I love what you do Taylor so I’m at least here to give some support as best I can. If I could recommend a couple of songs that I think would be worthwhile for everybody including yourself, Fade To Black off of the Ride the Lightning album and For Whom the Bell Tolls (same album) 🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻💯
Master of puppets was the first heavy metal song i ever heard. The second was king diamond, but thays a different story. Ibe never done drugs because of metallica
I'll look to see if you have analyzed their song sanitarium yet. This is a great analysis! I used to go to sleep to their master of puppets album when I was in high school!
@heartsupport Taylor the entire mast of puppets album was about James’s mother believing that the church of Scientology would save her, she gave so much and in the end lost her son. This was jame’s outlet for his father walking out and the way the church treated his mother and how the church told him and her what they could and couldn’t do.
Dirty Window is a great song where James mocks himself for writing a song condemning drug addicts while he was the leader of a band that was frequently referred to as Alcoholica. Only problem is that the song is on St. Anger which is rendered almost unlistenable by the production and tin can drum sound.
For this song, it's better to watch a regular live concert video instead of this one from the movie, Through the Never. That way you don't get distracted by the sensory overload from the violent content.
Yo, a Through the Never watch-through, but have her in a room with a big screen and a sound system/speakers. Recently, i been thinking of the lyrics from Halo on Fire, they’ve just been hitting me in a “yeah, that’s true” way, and chokes me up for whomever feels that way.
Watching her enjoying this song makes me think she would be an amazing partner to bring to concerts and enjoy with ❤ 🤘🏼 Beautiful analysis of the song. Btw, master of puppets is one of the most important influential songs/album in the metal genre.
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear (Heroin) Twisting your mind & smashing your dreams (LSD) Blinded by me you can't see a thing (Alcohol) Pain monopoly, ritual misery, chop your breakfast on a mirror (Cocaine) Now your life is out of season (Cigarettes, cancer) It's so funny how you can relate this song to ANY drug, but can't relate it to weed XD yet all around the world people still worries more about weed than anything
You really should watch the whole movie. My interpretation is the kid is walking on a thin spot between two worlds, and the course of the movie takes you through both of them.
Acoustic in the middle portrays the 'high' and the moments of euphoria. It begins to fade soon enough and anger ensues. Withdraw pain leads to a chaotic solo........
You should consider "The Poet and The Pendulum" by Nightwish (live in Wembly, 2015 is the best version). The writer fired the band's singer and got a lot of backlash from friends and fans for it. It was so bad that he contemplated suicide (this is the simple version of the story lol). He kills himself in the song to save his life in reality. It's very long (about 13ish minutes) but is very well written and Floor Jansen (the band's third and current singer) is one of the greatest vocalists of all time. It truly is a masterpiece.
Metallica is very special to me. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for there music. They have gotten me through some dark times. The song Fade to Black has gotten me through alot. It's my favorite Metallica song I love them all but that one is my favorite. Your reaction was awesome I didn't know somebody could make so many faces in a song. Lol😂
If you really wanna dive into James' Psyche, I'd suggest having a listen to Dyers Eve. It's about his childhood trauma. No ambiguity. They wont even perform it live. I think they have like once since '87. And While I'm putting my 2 cents in, Great videos! Have you ever heard 10,000 days ( wings Pt1) , Wings for Marie ( Wings part 2) by Tool? HIGHLY recommend you take that dive. A follow up to those two would be Judith by "A perfect Circle", same frontman Maynard James Keenan
Please remember that this was written very early in their career and it was at a time Metallica was known as Alcholica. This song was just about cocaine addiction but over the years it was seen to cover all drug addiction. They weren't in sobriety was this was written. the video she's watching has the new view of the song's meaning. Like Tool Opiate version 2

Even if your not a big an of them their live shows are so good to see.
So glad she waited for musical middle and end of song, I really thought she was going to stop too soon.
Exactly what this song is about. Anyone can hear that listen to the song. But I also thought anyone over 20 had heard of,or know this song. How could you not?????
It's about James parents.
Christian scientists
Maybe not everyone listens to your radio station!
@@skarlottt..... i'm afraid not... James Hetfield, of Metallica, explained in a 1988 interview with Thrasher magazine that “Master of Puppets” “deals pretty much with drugs. the song The God That Failed is the one you are probably thinking of.
@@skarlottt nothing about this song is referring to his parents. I doubt James's parents made him chop his breakfast on a mirror.
@@skarlotttthat’s am I evil. Or the god that failed
Here the issue is substance abuse
The arrangement of the song can be attributed to the phases 9f drug addiction. The first part is heavy and driving representing the want/need/search for the drug. The second part that is clean and beautiful is the taking of the drug. It's peacful and serene. Then the third part is the out of control crash and frantic, anxiety of search for more. At least that's how I see it.
The change in the middle represents the puppet getting there high. Then they fall back down. So much meaning in Metallica music.
See, when you are young and don´t have english as your native language, you just listen... just absorve the sound of Rock... but then you grow, learn english and found a channel with a great work like yours and finaly understand lyrics of that band you like so much... it´s just blow minds and you find yourself more fan of metallica and other bands than ever.
Thanks for your work, you are the best. (sorry for the rusty englush)
I love the dynamics of this live version but I really prefer the sound of the original audio. Fantastic reaction.
S&M may be the greatest hard rock album ever created. And I have it on VHS!!! If you ever get the chance, listen to master of puppets with the entire San Francisco orchestra behind them!
Would love to hear you react to “St. Anger” by them. Wasn’t a huge song, but always loved it.
A definite "YES" to making her watch the movie! It is quite entertaining, in my opinion. Peace & Love from the great State of Georgia 🙂
What is the name of the movie?
you UNDERSTAND!!!
I kinda love you, you get it... so many of your understanding reactions to KoRn and stuff like this...
*hug*
How things get switched around, instead of you controlling what you’re taking and doing it’s drugs controlling you.
can stand for anything though, authoritarian control mechanisms
I wish that people would have requested she react to the Master Of Puppets from METALLICA S&M album.
The song is a perfect portrayal of Narcissistic Abuse involving emotional manipulation. It evokes the confusion and helplessness one feels when in an emotionally abusive relationship. Music is the secret power, a gift you can draw resilience and courage from to get out of the madness of emotional abuse.
That was written about the addiction to cocaine.
@@MastyrOfPuppets yes I know that, but of course it applies to other issues.
Metallica's album 72 seasons is the most real concept I've ever heard, and I relate to the message of the album
One by Metallica, is a great song it’s about a guy in the army who stepped on a landmine and it’s a really good and deep song I think you’d like it
the soft guitar part is the high you feel when you take the drugs, slowly fading and you fall back into needing more. thats why the music starts to get more and more aggressive, the lyrics after that are kinda desperation and disappointment. edit the master is the drugs and the puppets are the ppl using it btw for ppl that dont understand :)
First Metal band (maybe any type of band) to release albums 50 years apart Rocka Rolla 74' and Invincible Shield 24'.
"I get like addiction vibes" ... I'll say, you nailed it.
Looks like the desk in the back is about to collapse. All warped
😂😂 I see it now
Bleeding Me is an awesome song with an extremely underrated solo!
Best metal song ever written period
This video you saw was just one of a "cinematic live concert", a live concert with a parallel story of a roady, you should see the whole movie
Master of puppets was the first heavy metal song i ever heard. The second was king diamond, but thays a different story. Ibe never done drugs because of metallica
This song we heard as teens / youths was really good. Unfortunately it hits way harder after a couple of decades struggling with the topic..
I love that trashcan drum sound
another song you might like that has this line of meaning is "the tragic truth" by five finger death punch
“Cut your breakfast on a mirror “ says it all!
Interesting that you picked this version. I would suggest a breakdown of everything on “Though the Never”.
Blackend is one of the best heavy songs. And justice for all
I'm a shocked dog I feel I cannot escape from booze but your analogy gives me hope because I need to get out from under this addiction
Vignette by Twenty One Pilots was released last month. It's about addiction. Really good.
I was at 1 of the 2 concerts they filmed for this in Vancouver
A thousand yes, please watch this movie. Metallica - through the never.
Check out James's journey as he has matured and gone through therapy in the Unforgiven 1, 2 and 3
Your reactions are amazing and so on point thank you
My Prof Dr. Mrs. Begley at Alma College authored several papers about learned helplessness that i was able to assist on!!
Watching her enjoying this song makes me think she would be an amazing partner to bring to concerts and enjoy with ❤ 🤘🏼 Beautiful analysis of the song.
Btw, master of puppets is one of the most important influential songs/album in the metal genre.
You should see them do this song in the Live in Seattle video.... wow.
YES, the whole movie reaction would be awesome!
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear (Heroin)
Twisting your mind & smashing your dreams (LSD)
Blinded by me you can't see a thing (Alcohol)
Pain monopoly, ritual misery, chop your breakfast on a mirror (Cocaine)
Now your life is out of season (Cigarettes, cancer)
It's so funny how you can relate this song to ANY drug, but can't relate it to weed XD yet all around the world people still worries more about weed than anything
Definitely needs to see the whole movie! 🤘🏽
You really should watch the whole movie. My interpretation is the kid is walking on a thin spot between two worlds, and the course of the movie takes you through both of them.
Suggestions, Of mice and men - feels like forever. Young guns - bones. Breaking benjamin - so cold
This video is from the movie they made a few years ago.
This song is in the Library of Congress for its expressions into addiction.
One of the most underrated rock songs is Rammstein - Stirb nicht vor mir
Hahahaha of the end... sarcastic "laugh at the master" telling it to fahk da fahhk off"
You seem to Understand PLEASE keep analyzing and help us
Acoustic in the middle portrays the 'high' and the moments of euphoria.
Yes watch the movie, so you can get the context of those scenes, its called "though the never"
