This song is a direct line back to Buddy Holly through the Beatles and a forward link to power pop bands of the 90's like Material Issue. This is a masterpiece of power pop.

it's that twangy backbeat - sometimes in the middle of the day, something will twang like a string or cord, automatically those 1st 5 opening guitar plucks will pop in my head, & I'll have to play the .mp3. It's musical poetry.

Yeah, I totally agree. Marshall Crenshaw really channeled Buddy Holly's spirit on a lot of his songs, and this is a fine example. Buddy Holly was the first superstar I connected with as a kid. I'm a child of two hippies from the '60's, so I was raised on The Beatles, CCR, Bod Dylan, and so forth. However, Buddy Holly was blasting out of the radio on one glorious 4th of July day and I've been hooked ever since. :-) Happy listening everyone.

I'm old enough to have been aware of him in 1982, but am only vaguely aware of this song until recently. As to Crenshaw, one could say with certainty that life isn't fair. He wrote (apparently - based on comments herein, I'm not musical) sophisticated music and wrote good lyrics (that one can sing along to), sang same well, played an instrument at least competently while singing live, had good stage presence and demeanor, and was handsome. Yeah, he got a raw deal. Love the song.

@@curly_wynto be fair, 70s power pop had definitely gotten pretty lame by the late 70s, which is exactly why you had that brief moment where Marshal and The Stray Cats and the Romantics and Dave Edmunds had their hits. Very retro, very energetic, very clean sound, and just goddamn endless fun, but retro trends never last very long. They usually just fill up the space between one major trend crapping out and another one starting.

Bought this guy's album when it came t after seeing a review for it in Rolling Stone. They review was good and when I bought it and listened to it I loved it. I also can't understand why Marshall didn't take off to great heights. His songs especially on that first album are killer. A friend of mine met him when he came to Australia years ago and said he was one of the nicest people you could meet. He should have been huge.

One thing I miss about Letterman; they always booked the up and coming musicians. I think Paul Schaefer had a hand in that. Great song, great singer, what a cutie. ❤
