  • Jeff Buckley was one of the most promising musicians of the 1990s. With his incredibly distinctive voice and exceptional guitar skills, the world was truly his oyster. Buckley's debut album Grace (1994), while not as appreciated back then, has since become a classic. The album contains many 90s rock staples including "So Real", "Lover, You Should've Come Over" and the gorgeous yet haunting cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."
Tragically, at the peak of his creative genius, Jeff Buckley would pass away in 1997, leaving behind the incomplete follow-up to Grace. This second album, which was tentatively titled "My Sweetheart the Drunk", was released as a compilation in 1998. The title was changed to "Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk" for obvious reasons. What could have been Buckley's second masterpiece was unfortunately relegated to demos and tracks from the Tom Verlaine sessions that left him unsatisfied.
This is the story of Jeff Buckley. An insanely talented artist that died in the infancy of his career.

      Lilac Wine

I would have said Last Goodbye (that bass intro!) or So Real - that high note is chilling, just thinking about it.
That said, Sketches gave us New Year’s Eve Prayer and Forget Her.
But I think my favorite is Morning Theft.
“what am I still to you
Some thief who stole from you?
Or, some fool drama queen whose chances were few?”

Of course it's Hallelujah. That is one of the most famous recordings in the history of music. It was preserved in the Library of Congress for a reason. Very few performers can ever top that.

God, I am so glad that I grew up in the 90s. There will never be another decade like it.

I live less than 15 minutes from the site of Jeff Buckley's death, and I have actually swam in that area. The currents are crazy in that area, but I swam there as a young child without any issue. I have been trying to wrap my head around his death since it happened, but I just can't make sense of it. I assumed he was under the influence of something, but toxicology said he was sober. I don't understand what happened. He was a uniquely gifted performer that had so much life ahead of him. It was so tragic, but I am glad he left us with what he did. It is something we can all remember him by, and he will never be forgotten.

Thanks for reviewing this - and “getting it.” I’ve heard people try to do this, and, well - a swing and a miss.
Andy Wallace was a great choice for Grace. Even reversing cymbals and adding flange.
Jeff’s guitar playing is underrated. He had style. I saw him live twice (The Green Mill and Metro in Chicago).
Bar none - Jeff at Metro was my favorite show ever.
I think it’s worth noting he was the first to cover Hallelujah with any recognition. I believe he worked with Cohen to choose which verses to use.
Rufus Wainright did it for Shrek because, as he said, “Jeff wasn’t there to do it.” Rufus wrote Memphis Skyline as a tribute Buckley. 💔
That man predicted his own death repeatedly in song. It’s heavy.

I think that Shrek used John Cale's cover.

@@vadanevadas6960 Ah! Good call! They both did it, Cale in the film, Wainright on the soundtrack. Licensing issues.
“Although Rufus Wainwright's version of the song "Hallelujah" appeared in the soundtrack album, it was John Cale's version that appeared in the film. “
I just recalled my old boss asking if I could teach her a guitar version of it, and it was the Rufus version.

I know it’s not super relevant to the video but Chester Bennington did an incredible version of Hallelujah at Chris Cornell’s funeral it’s up on UA-cam

Why can't I minimize the video here like I can on other channels?

I can’t either. It’s iffy sometimes with certain videos, but most channels do it for me except channels with licensed music.
