What if Kurt Cobain Didn't Die in 1994?

  • This question has been asked many times over the years. What if Kurt Cobain didn't die in 1994? Would Nirvana have continued? Would Kurt have released solo material? We'll never really know. But in this video, I dive into this hypothetic scenario. I lay out an alternate timeline, going into detail of events beginning in April, 1994. Eventually I make my way to the end of the decade. Covering everything from Kurt's marriage with Courtney Love to Foo Fighters.
This is what would’ve happened if April 5th, 1994 was just a regular day. A fun little idea to explore.

Not to mention, memes are very offensive nowadays. They’d go against all of his values.

@@kriglum0760 I'm not assuming anything. If you don't live according to the word of GOD then you don't have any hope at all! There is no "better place" or anything else. John 3:3 "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." If you expect that you're going to a reward or have peace or a peaceful existence when you die you are sadly mistaken! We all sinners and Jesus (being the son of God) is the only one that came to this Earth to die for our sins so that we can be saved.
Romans 10: 6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
So who do you think goes to Heaven and who do you think goes to Hell?! And who is more of an authority of than the one who created everything you know? Who are you to decide?

Kurt Cobain was one of a kind.
And you can quote me on that. He is a very rare type of person indeed. Few people on this planet are like him.
One thing a lot of people don’t realise is that he was very introverted and shy. I’m not sure if it was caused by his childhood traumas or if he’s naturally that way. Either way, you can tell from his body language and facial expressions that he gets less comfortable with more people.
Lots of rockers, especially punk rockers of his generation like Eddie Vedder, Flea and Billie Joe Armstrong etc are all miles more extroverted and fuelled by rampant, chaotic crowds. The same can be said about his professional rival, Axl Rose.
But Kurt, Kurt was a completely different specimen. Yes, his unpredictable stage persona during ‘88-‘91 made him seem like a sociable, confident man, but in all honesty, that was most probably his way of carrying himself and channeling his inner rage through gruelling performances he constantly subjected himself to.
However, come to ‘92-‘94, and somethings…off. He isn’t moving around as much. He isn’t really being enthusiastic. And his facial expression is this…unchanging shape of sorrow.
The man’s been through the universe, pretty much. It’s all too much to explain. But trust me, he is a person you wouldn’t want to live in the shoes of; it’ll break you in a week.
Also, there’s an almost certain chance he was on the spectrum. You don’t have to take my word for it, but if you watch a whole bunch of performances, yes, but ESPECIALLY interviews, the way he interacts with people and talks is so…idiosyncratic. Distinctive. Yes he’s quiet and shy, but also very…not “normal”.
On top of that, his humour is very spontaneous, yes, but also very nonsensical. Like, humour only he can understand or comprehend. Things like “twist of lemon” and “shave your head and wear a dress”, definitely have a message or meaning, but they’re also quite random and just happen on a whim.
Now I don’t really want to get into drugs, because that is a whole other can of worms. But I will say, being a very troubled individual and consuming substances is guaranteed to completely fry your brain and mess you up, until you are nothing but a hollow shell of sadness. And none of this was his fault.
And lastly, socialising can be very hard for some, but imagine the nightmare it must be for Kurt. He was always cast off by others and treated as…pretty much an NPC. Imagine how hard must that be? It’s a good thing he found Krist, an amazing friend. But even he was unable to fill his tortured, lonely soul. Apparently, some other comment describes that during Kurt’s final days, while Krist was trying to bring Kurt to rehab for the greater good of himself, Kurt forcibly exited the car, and ran away from his best buddy, blurting “F*ck you!”. Might just be a rumour, but if true, that’s just heartbreaking.
People just don’t seem to see Kurt for who he really is. He’s just a lost boy who had a dream and wanted to show the world his amazing music. But in the process, he became overwhelmed and fell into a terrible rabithole, ending like this.
    Poor dude.

I think Nirvana would have been done by 1995 at the latest if he had lived. It seems like he was starting to get bored of it, and he appeared to be heading in a more blues/folksy sort of direction based on some comments he made. I imagine he would have gone down a solo path a lot like Mark Lanegan did, which would have been really awesome imo. I do think he would have divorced Courtney as well, things were heading in that direction before he died. Kurt said a few times he thought that Nirvana would become more experimental like Butthole Surfers. Playing off the more textured production of In Utero. That would have played better with some of the electronic elements that became a staple of late 90's music and would continue to grow as an element in all genres of music.

There is a novel by an author named Lewis Shiner called "Glimpses", came out in 93'. It detailed a guy who time travels back to the late 60s and early 70s to "save" a number of rock stars. Morrison, for example, survives Paris and Pam inly to kill a kid while driving drunk. This video reminded me of that novel. Interesting exercise. I wonder if this sort of speculation says more about the dead rock stars or about us fans.
    Anyway great video.

This might sound kinda out of left field but I personally think if Kurt survived weezer and the blue album might not have as big are they are, since Kurt’s death and the dissolution of Nirvana created a little bit of a vacuum in alt-rock which weezer came in at a perfect time to fill, so with Kurt still around and Nirvana still on top while not effecting anything to much I believe the album might have performed a little worse like maybe a spot or two down on the top 100 or something

Interesting post. Id like that add to this, my friend. 👍There were lots of bands that in about '95 were propelled by MTV and record labels as another Nirvana. Everclear, Bush, and lots of others in that vein. The other big bands like Pearl Jam were bowing out of the spotlight, avoiding MTV. Stone Temple Pilots stepped up, and hit the bullseye with the excellent "Purple" album. Soundgarden were a big deal aswell, with a number one album - on the same time Kurt died.
Coming from England, Bush didnt really get as big there at all, because mere months after Kurt passed, Oasis became the biggest thing in the UK, ushering in the Britpop era. Post Nirvana bands like Bush didnt catch on asmuch in the UK then, but in America Bush dived into that vacuum as you correctly described, and became huge. Bush wanted to be famous, pose for magazines, etc. The post Grunge bands had a different attitude, that the US media caught onto , promote further and be more accessible than the more reluctant anti heroics of the Seattle giants.
Id say too, that Green Day and Offspring layed down a post Grunge era of punk revival that swept up the mainstream after Nirvana. By the end of '94, Green Day were the nxt big thing in the US, and Oasis took over the UK. This happened so instantly right after Kurts passing.
I think Weezer, whose debut album I love, would have done just as well if Nirvana had stuck around. They wrote great songs that, people instantly liked. I think those mid 90s bands would have broke out regardless. I do wonder, what Kurt would have thought of the rapidly changing landscape in the mid-late 90s, especially the nu Metal era that carried the 90s out on a totally different wave than what Grunge helped usher in at the decades beginning. Sorry for rambling, but this topic is very interesting to me!👍👍😀😀

@@Bismark1815 Another band that really aimed for the stars after Nirvana was Smashing Pumpkins. 👍 Their debut, "Gish" was released just before Nevermind. That, and its incredible follow up, "Siamese Dream" were lauded and applauded , sending them into the heights that Seattle was shot up to, despite the Pumpkins being in a unique bubble if their own.
In 1996, they released a diverse multi-layered Double Album, which was unheard of in the mid90s rock scene. Yet, it made them one of the biggest things in the world that time. They wanted to play arenas, and acknowledge the past Rock gods that, most of their peers downplayed interest in.
Billy Corgan raved about Rush and Van Halen, he didnt downplay his wantings to be in a deservingly big band. And it was all going very well, till 1998s "Adore" was a departure of sound that, didnt initially fit with the yet again change of time. By then Korn/Nu Metal was rumbling.
I think all the bands that got big leading up to and following Kurts passing would have happened as it did. Scenes change, evolve and can co-exist together. Id love it had Kurt survived, chilled out and lived thru' it all. 👍

I can see Dave Grohl leave Nirvana by 1995 and start his own band. However, I don't know if he'll name it Foo Fighters and I also don't think he'll be writing the same songs we know from Foo Fighters. Some songs of Foo Fighters are inspired by Kurt's death.
I think Krist would stay in Nirvana for longer. I get the feeling he'll leave the band between 1997-2003. I noticed Krist seemed to be someone who likes to be a loyal friend of Kurt for as long as he can.
Regarding Courtney, I don't think he'll divorce her in 1994. I have a feeling they'll be married for at least five years. At most they'll divorce in 2001. Frances might have gotten a younger sibling.
I'm not sure if Kurt wouldn't live past 40. I think he was capable of living longer but it really depends on his life, surroundings, etc. With his drug addictions I do sense that he's prone to die young. I mean, Courtney did save him a few times when he overdosed. He'll need someone to save him when he would get overdosed.

Maybe perfect world he’s done with H and just enjoys time with Frances becomes a full time painter, possibly re marries a woman that was a better influence for him, it’s hard to say what this alternate destiny for Kurt was, unfortunately we’ll never know what it is.

I remember watching Nirvana Heart Shaped Box and fell in love with the video and became an instant fan of Nirvana…then of course I went down the rabbit hole and bought their past albums…Around that time I met my first bf and he got me into other groups but I was still hooked on Kurt…I bought t-shirts, the white glasses, chucks and would just go to school…got called an Oreo many times but I didn’t care…
When the news hit about Kurt passing…I was so sad and crying…I felt like I just found gold and now it’s gone…I went out bought a guitar and wanted to learn because of him…taking lessons and just want to learn how to play Nirvana songs…but it definitely took me a while after his passing to listen to any Nirvana albums… I was so into Nirvana/Kurt any project I did in school, any reports, any graphic design projects had to do…all was centered around Kurt and Nirvana… That’s how much I truly enjoyed everything they had done…The band and Kurt definitely took a hold on me and years later I still love and appreciate the good memories I have when I found out about them…Of course we would always love more time but Kurt left his mark and he will never be forgotten.

I could see nirvana doing a double album, perhaps an acoustic album. I could see at least one member doing a duet with David Bowie after the unplugged show. I could see them separating or going taking a break and working on solo material before a reunion at some point. I could imagine some or all members getting into producing work in the studio and limiting touring/travelling etc and perhaps release some studio albums (in a similar manner to sgt pepper ie no touring etc or concerts), they could have also done at least one concept album and invited more musicians into the fold (ie piano, organ, twelve string guitar etc). I thought nirvana were overrated but the what ifs etc and what could have been intrigued me, it's a shame we never got more and of course it's a shame a person has passed which affected many people. He might by now have reinvented himself as an Indie visual artist/musician and UA-cam influencer, speaking about spiritual practices and speaking out on geo political issues, in a similar vein to former addict Russell Brand.

The musical landscape changed just so rapidly in the short sharp time following Kurt's passing. By '94's end, Green Day brought a punk fusion laced with a giddy, fun presentation that caught onto people that wanted a more cheered up sound inthe wake of Kurt's loss. With the restof the Seattle scene either bowing slowly outta the limelight like Pearl Jam, or sadly getting caught up in their own drug drama like Alice in Chains, the media and nxt set of rock fans were responding to a more brighter, outlook. In the UK meanwhile, Oasis became an overnight sensation and the scene totally drifted to a homegrown sound and lifestyle that was the opposite of Grunge in every way. I don't know if Kurts passing cast such a dark shadow that, the more uptempo, colorful direction rock took was a reaction to that, but its interesting to think about. But then, along came Nu Metal, and the mass amount of BoyBands, Britney, etc. Everything changed and reacted even differently again.
I always wonder what the Great man himself would have thought of it all, had he lived. Go solo, do some paintings, be a Dad, chill out, hang in there. Come back on his own terms with that acoustic direction he was talking about in '93. Who knows? Id loved to have seen him and Nirvana in the restof the 90s as Oasis, Green Day and bands as diverse as The Prodigy and Korn, Nu Metal took the decade into an entirely new and different tangent on its exit.

Speaking of, when I first got into music, I was heavy into Nirvana and I still quite enjoy their music.
I remember being an absolute Kurt Cobain fan, and I memorized his birth date and death date. I noticed something interesting, though. I remember his death date being May 5 of 1994, and the only reason I know I absolutely know it is because it’s a month after my birthday, and I remember making the connection between May 5 (5th month and 5th day) and the year 1994 because five goes after four, which is obvious but Duh that’s how I used it to remember the date.
I don’t necessarily believe in the Mandela Effect, but I do believe energy is in constant motion, there is no one singular timeline, and things are as they are because that’s how they are, but the universe must contradict itself to exist.

ima guess that nirvana would break up around whatever time they’d release their 4th album (probably 1995, 1996 or 1997) as he wasn’t really satisfied with nirvana despite their commercial success

If he didn't die Nirvana wouldn't be considered an important band. Nevermind wouldn't be the album of the 90s. The Nirvana logo wouldn't be sold on t shirts at Forever 21.

It sounds like you are likely under 45 years old. If you were a teen or in your 20s in the 90s and paid even the slightest amount of attention to English-language rock music, you'd remember just how huge Nirvana was. Instead of Kurt dying, they could've made more music, even really crappy music, and they'd still be important. They already proved themselves with the material they came out with, so it wouldn't matter. Nevermind would still be a huge album of the 90s. It was crazy. I remember moving to Toronto from Vancouver in 1991 and people were telling me they wanted to visit Seattle. It made no sense to me because Vancouver was such a nicer city, yet this whole Nirvana thing was motivating people to travel across the continent to a relatively obscure city. They made catchy tunes that lots of people liked. They were a fresh change to what mainstream rock radio was playing. The Stone Roses are still considered an important band, but they only had 2 albums, then whatever the musicians did after that independent of the band never got the same attention. Anyone who understands 90s alternative rock knows that that band was groundbreaking. And if that's the case, Nirvana all the more. Smells Like Teen Spirit jolted people. Nirvana was selling out concerts all over the place.

@@alukuhito Well, I'm NOT under thirty and Turdvana came out after I was an adult. Nothing that they did was groundbreaking or musically inspiring. They were the most hyped up band at that time because they made shitty music and were new faces on the block. If they dressed like everyone else at that time and sounded like them they wouldn't have been so hyped up in the mainstream media. I don't see the appeal. I didn't then and I don't know. I always made fun of them and when I heard them on the radio I turned them off. I still turn them off today. Don't fool yourself - all you're saying is celebrity worship and public adulation. In the next twenty years no one will be talking about them and someone from this modern generation will be the subject of controversy.

@@solarismoon3046 LOL. Maybe YOU weren't inspired by Nirvana, but obviously many people were. Did they need to be "groundbreaking"? Who said so? They weren't hyped up. Their music spoke for itself. Pearl Jam and some other Seattle bands were hyped up. Record companies wanted more Nirvanas, so they did their best to promote the Seattle scene / grunge. In 20 years, if the planet still exists, people will still be listening to Nirvana. They've obviously passed the test of time. They were a short-lived band that ended in the mid-90s, 30 years ago, yet people are for some reason still listening to them. You have your personal taste, but that doesn't mean you need to avoid the reality. I don't like Taylor Swift, but I don't pretend that she's not loved by millions of people. You can blab your opinions all you want, but they're just opinions. Just look up Smells like Teen Spirit on UA-cam, right here. 1.8 billion views. This is for one song from a band that came out before UA-cam was even a thing, let alone the internet as we know it. That's not hype. That's WAY after the fact. That's just people wanting to listen to a song and watch the video.

He was manically depressive, I've met people like that, everything may be fine, but she falls into mental self-flagellation, the famous depression of today, however addictive, comes from diabolical origins.
If it was just pain, it doesn't explain having an appetite for difficult or "heavy" music from a young age, including those with raw or violent lyrics. There are people who defy the natural order of things by polluting the air or things like that, others pollute the music. "Leadbelly" had a life of playing in troubled areas, fights and ended up becoming a murderer, he could only sing like that to try to forget the shitty life he owes to leaving school early and going to sing in the zones. Kurt, upon learning about his life, discovered something to make money and appear to be a victim with something to say. In Dallas Treee he was beaten by a security guard, he should have beaten him a lot more, this rebel without a cause, not that he hates him, he has very good songs but because he is a WEAK, maybe that's what his mother and father didn't do to life had done, maybe he wouldn't kill himself like an idiot, maybe he would get better, when you look for hell you also find it. When you look for shit you get shit! God our Lord rest assured!

Worth bearing in mind, of course, all evidence suggests Kurt was murdered, eg:
    - the alleged suicide note makes no reference to suicide, except the last few sentences, which appears in larger writing in seemingly different handwriting
    - the private detective, Tom Grant, whom Courtney Love hired to 'search' for Kurt, was provided curious items Courtney's lawyer found in Courtney's handbag which was left at the lawyer's house:
    - a handwriting practice pad, and
    - a note in Courtney notebook with the reminder to "get arrested"; coincidentally, in what would seem a perfect alibi, on the evening of Kurt's death, Courtney was arrested in Los Angeles
    - the amount of heroin found in Kurt's body was ~5 times the fatal limit:
    - as Grant said, he's not aware of any overdose in history in which an individual with such a high level of heroin didn't die instantly; let alone, as reported, have enough time to apparently, neatly pack away the associated heroin kit (for some reason), cock the shotgun and shoot
    - Kurt's credit card was used after the alleged suicide
    - Kurt and Courtney's lawyer told Grant Kurt had claimed he was divorcing Courtney and Kurt had planned to change the will
    - the same lawyer also claims Courtney asked her to find the "meanest and nastiest divorce attorney in town"
    - when Kurt was reported missing, Courtney asked Kurt's friend to visit the house to look for him; not finding Kurt in the main house and reporting to Courtney, Courtney soon after called a security company to install cameras in the exterior non-attached dwelling as "a matter of priority"; it was that installer who found Kurt's body in that location
    - for these and other reasons, Grant has maintained since 1993 that "Kurt was murdered with one hundred per cent certainty"

What a shame it was. I always wonder what his life would have been like if he had gotten away from Courtney in time, or never met that trainwreck
