I love that he’s interviewing all generations
That's a strange thing to say! Why wouldn't he interview musicians of all ages. It's not like he has a history of not interviewing them!? He interviews anyone he can get, based on my viewing experience
Very important point! He’s bringing generations.
Showing the old to the new, showing the new to the old. 👌
@@lucpet95 agreed. It would be very odd if he only stuck to certain ages of musicians
💕❤️🎶❣️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
@@lucpet95a lot of old guys (particularly boomers) tend to stick to their own. Most Millenials and Zoomers can’t tolerate them, so they also kinda band together. There’s a huge divide in the music world (really everywhere) between when they made “good music” and whatever is out there now. Rick is doing a great job of bridging the two, both for the sake of the younger generations, the older generations, and just anyone uninformed in or out of the music world.
I love how she references Victor so profusely and with such reverence - she's an absolute delight
Change the world young lady - you're wonderful
Victor has been crazy influential on this generation of virtuosos. I love it!
Hear Hear
Couldn't have said it better !
Victor comes across like he has got to be one of the most self-righteous musicians out there, sometimes disguised as humble. Terrible.

Mohini became huge in the Indian scene when she performed with AR Rehman on Coke Studio India. She was probably 15 and part of an ensemble of some of the best musicians in India. But she played incredibly well and with such confidence that I immediately knew that she's going to become massive!
Keep rocking!
Man, AR Rahman? Serious musicians!
I’m impressed. She’s real !
Absolutely gifted and amazing talent. Heartbroken she's already married (as if I had a shot 😅) but very beautiful, and contagious spirit. Hope she makes her way to southern California, I will be sure to see her perform ❤❤
A beautiful and respectful interview. One of the hallmarks of your interviewing style, Rick, is not overstepping boundaries. You create space that allows people to 'be.'
OMG totally. What a pro he is!!!
Yes truly. But I want to say something that I believe. Her father, that is Mohini's father seems like a very strong headed person.
I think Mohini should actually consider her extended family's intentions to safeguard her from being indoctrinated to play the bass. It seems that they were concerned about her. I think many parents may fall into the trap of trying to live their dreams through the children, almost not leaving any room for the child to grow and have their own dreams.
Maybe she should consider that - it could be a possibility. A child must show interest in something, before we set about exploring how deep their love for it is.
My cousin lives in the same apartment building as her in Mumbai! She is so awesome! What a legend!!!!
woooooooww❤❤
Are the walls still in good shape? 😛
She moved to Nashville
She wont stay there long shes bound to move to the west. More opportunities, better money etc.
@@crystalwaters8852Why? the Indian subcontinent has an incredibly rich musical history. Not only that, but there are some incredible collaborations and new music which comes out of there. Check out Coke Studio (Pakistan, India,
And Bangla). Have you ever heard of Ms Marvel? One of the most famous songs from there comes from Eva B, a musician from Pakistan. One of Asia’s first bands come from West Bengal - Mohiner Ghoraguli in the 70). They were revolutionary at a time when soundtracks from movies ruled the music industry. A progressive rock band, Qayyas, was the first Pakistani rock bands to play at SXSW. Rock On, a movie based on a band, was featured on Rolling Stones. Another Bengali band, Bhoomi, became one of the only Indian bands who had a song for the United Nations. I can go on.
Rick you're going to grow from 4 million subscribers to 40 million if you keep interviewing these young talented musicians. They're going on to do great things and your channel will record the history of their journey!
Specially from India. There are 1.5 billion viewers there
Incredible Story .
Yes, young 'talented' musicians!
Totally agree
Absolutely. She has not only defined her own class of musician, she is adept in business and has a background of humility and devoted family to keep her grounded. Awesome interview!
Such a wise and genuinely natural speaker who is bursting with unique talent. Our world needs more people like her. Pure bass magic.
Plus Risk's such a great interviewer, always let's the guest lead. Rick's the best.

@@noize2sound Soooo, what's your point?
Mohini Dey is no doubt very accomplished and talented, but what I find so striking is the way she talks about her family, especially her Dad and their relationship. I can tell it's been a journey and yet, she seems to have a maturity and clarity about her emotions that I can only wish we all had. This interview was delightful and reminded me of my own father. I wish Mohini more success ahead!
"If you don't know how to improvise, then there is nothing to talk about."
That is such an amazing line, and I wholeheartedly agree. Intentionality and conversationality are essential.
That sounds so pretentious to me, how is Metallica or Nirvana "nothing to talk about", or the hundreds of other famous bands who also don't know the first thing about music theory?
You missed point. Improvising is from the soul. It is nice to have that vocabulary but not important.
@@bradleyphilp4510 I think she's just saying as a musician you need to be able to adapt and play to the moment. All those bands you mentioned are only great because they played great together, and each member wrote their own parts.
Indian classical music is always about improvisation on stage. Conversation she refers to is this improvisation. It is rather usual to see one Musician taking the song in a particular direction and then others just go mad improvising. That is a conversation piece. It is different from playing a set song, there is beauty of familiarity there but musicality is limited to how tight you are as a band, small improvs here and there and how good the composition is. Her concerts do not have much familiarity but for the start
@@bradleyphilp4510if you think you need to know theory to improvise. Then yes we have nothing to talk about.
Fantastic Interview. Mohini Dey is not only a fantastic bass player, she is also a very entertaining storyteller w/ lot of humor and human radiation. A joy to listen to her. Cheers from Bavaria.
Never heard of Mohini, but I just became a fan. Thank you Rick for this interview. Amazing musician and lovely soul!
A Millennium soul ☺️🙏 Mind blown by her soul, depth & application can't help Loving her ❤
Intelligent, articulate, engaging, both speaking and playing. What a fun interview to hear.
Wow,.. What a Force, I couldn't keep up to her at 10y.o.
This is an "instant classic" Beato interview ... Mohini is a delightful virtuoso ... you bring out so many subtle nuances of this multifaceted young lady ... ... BRAVO to Beato and Mohini 👏👏👏
Bravo also to her parents for their success in raising such an exemplary, immensely skilled virtuoso...if they aren't going around beaming with pride, they absolutely should be!!
This interview is like listening to a great philosopher relate her wisdom on music and playing bass. So engaging.
Yes at 27 with 18 years playing professionally already! Pretty impressive 👏
Good lord. She's mesmerizing. She just "blah, blah, blah, whatever"ed some of the most beautiful bass music I've ever heard 48:30. Just messing around. She's like the living embodiment of the bass. It feels like it's part of her body.
I am 64 years old, when I see and hear some of these younger musicians today, I am blown away. Yes they have U-Tube, Vid's and DVD's, & everyone teaching, which we didn't;t have i the 70's. But, the work ethic to get this good is really amazing. The late Al Mouzon used to tell me about musicians in Universities that would leave he would run into & leave his jaw dropping, and I totally agree when I hear someone like Mohini. Mohini is special!
she is unbelievable. am sure her Dad is watching from above and beyond proud.
Not just unbelievable, but also inevitable!!! True and Amazing.
As a Bengali, She is insanely inspirational! Love you Mohini! ❤
I’ll add…as a person…
I think he meant that HE is Bengali. Could be wrong though.
@@briangrant2426 You are not wrong.
But I can't believe a Bengali family was disappointed that they had daughters; also that a Bengali father would lock up his daughter if she wanted a different career
@maurmi it's crazy . Some bengali families are still the same..I'm happy that my family is and always will be supportive.
This lady is absolutely amazing. Her talent, experiences, enthusiasm, knowledge, upbringing, understanding, insight, gratitude … just outstanding. Great interview!
Much respect to Mohinis father. Imagine his pride after decades of hard work teaching his daughter. May he rest in peace. Amazing job.
I can’t believe I wasn’t aware of this amazing musician. Literally blown away. Can’t stop smiling. Thank you, Rick.
Me too, he turned us on to another one! Keep it up, Rick! 😎
Absolutely
I know, I am in India and I am amazed I didn't know her.
She has played with Steve Vai in India and been touring with A R Rahman for years now. Great musician.
I totally get it that a lot of Indian Artists don't get recognized by the World outside. She isn't the only one, there are a lot more incredible musicians in India, who are still not very known. Mohini got the limelight because she's been playing since a very young age and she got the chances to play with international artists.
Pride of India, Freddie Mercury,
Mohini Dey
Add Zakir Hussein, Lt.Ravi Shankar and daughter Anoushka following… maybe not mainstream but they have an international following
@@spinachleach if I mention everyone, it's a big list. As of now.. Freddie is enough, we r talking about western music
Why freddie? Was he not persian?

Rick I have never seen you enjoy an interview like this before !!!! She's got everything.. philosophy direction passion imagination honesty progress articulation and also I think she figured out how to play the bass
This put a smile on my face! She is incredible!
She’s great. Not only a great player but has real charisma about her too. Earned herself a new fan here.
Definitely the greatest interview and most fantastic personality and accomplished bassist I have had the pleasure of "seeing" and hearing in my 62 years of playing music.
Mohini you're a genius! With the heart of a nemesis....you're simply beautiful 🎉
That smile that comes over her face when she's playing - you can see that for Mohini music is joy.
She has a LOT of energy. Certainly a lot more than me at that age. And much more talent too ... and actually much more than me at my present age.
I wish her a great and happy life.
She's from my native state. She inspired thousands of guitar player. As a guitarist I am also big fan of her. Keep going girl and Thank you man for inviting her 🎉❤

Mindblowing. Can't get enough of her. Her spirituality is burning through everything ❤
Thank you Rick for interviewing her! I’m a Bengali from India as well and very proud of her achievements as a terrific bass player!
What an incredibly talented and charming woman she is. Also, her attitude and work ethic are glowing. Great interview.
This woman is a breath of fresh air… she’s just an absolute beautiful person with pure talent. Great video.
okay, her tone is PHENOMENAL, one of the fullest, best bass sounds i've ever heard.. and the playing is obviously incredible, but what impresses me the most is how it's not just easy to her but she's having sooo much FUN!! :D her smile is infectious, what an inspiration!! i'm gonna go practice!!
Her energy is infectious! Somebody gotta get her in for a biopic. Her early life story is ripe for a movie! 😅
And loooove hearing about music from less "conventional" perspectives like the traditional instruments/music from India.
She is not just an incredible player, she is also an incredible teacher. She really makes sense and can explain in a way that everyone (even non-musicians) is capable to understand and be amazed at the same time.
Wow. She's amazing. Her enthusiasm for her instrument and music is so refreshing.
I like how she rates Mark King because I love Level 42.
Me too, huge 42 fan here!
@@fragwagon Me too! Huge Level 42 fan since 1985! Love that she gave props to Mark King.
That was awesome :)
I hadn't listened to Level 42 in so many years and just went back last weekend. Classic stuff.
Mark King is an incredible bassist. Folks like Mark (and Mohini) make playing such a complex bass look like it would be easy. Trust me, it is *NOT AT ALL* easy. : )
I’m so happy that the algorithm sent this my way. I’m no audiophile, but I enjoy music and this woman is a delight. I enjoyed her confidence and joy as well as her talent and musical philosophy.
Rick, this is the happiest I have seen you while interviewing. Mohini just exudes excitement. That is the feeling I got and that is why I noticed you had the same face. Thank you for pinning her down to a seat.
As a Bengali I’m super duper proud of her…she made all of us proud. Love you Mohini, respect you even more. You’re to me the incarnation of Goddess Saraswati…
For someone who claims she doesn't like to talk much she certainly has the gift of the gab. Mohini is such an incredibly gifted and talented musician. I really appreciate that in spite of her incredible facility that what motivates her is melody, soul, feel, and groove.
I already knew she was an amazing world-class bassist. But I'm so pleased to see how classy, smart, well-spoken and impressive she is as a person.
I wanted to take a nap just from hearing her describe all the different ventures she's involved in.
What a story!
Love Mohini and her sister Esani.
Finally you are in the US!
All the best!
She s soooo cool as a person, not only an incredible player
wow!!!.....I mean; how does one comment after that? it was so voluminous, I'm still aghast at her gift, her talent, her genius. Thank you, excellent interview, and you were not interruptible at all.....great job.
What an awesome interview Rick. What a phenomenal young talent in Mohini. Where have I been? She is unbelievably talented and wise beyond her years. I am 69 years old and grew up in the beginning stages of fusion. I hear a few artists in this young lady’s playing. She would fit in any genre that she found herself in. WOW 🔥🔥🔥. God bless her father for guiding her and instilling all the necessary values for her to be successful. Also, her mother for holding down the house. Having amazing and loving parents are such a blessing to have in your life. May God bless her in all of her business endeavors. Rick, again, you killed this interview. God bless you as well
What an astonishing talent. Fantastic interview Rick.
Okk...this young women is brilliant
She is unlimited - beautiful energy, vast knowledge and amazing command of the instrument. Thank you Rick for such a good interview.
An amazing woman, and musician, too. Love the way she slaps those bass strings. Phenomenal! Thank you Rick and Mohini for this interview.
Omg. Thank you for this. Never heard of this amazing young lady. Wow wow wow wow.
This girl has a great attitude and a great sound!!! Love her!!! Keep on rocking!!!!
beautiful person and radiates brains and talent
watching this again and the part where she is walking us through her pedal board. The range of grooves and genres she plays in that short period just showcases what a genius she is!!
This is one of the most beautiful and exciting interviews made with a musician !
My respect for Mohini and Rick
What a powerhouse! I love to hear about all the other (non-music and music-adjacent) things she does in addition to shredding on the bass. Yay!
Unfreakin believable Rick. What an AWESOME interview and what an AWESOME person & player she is. This was a real treat to watch! This is the first i've heard of her, but i'm a fan now! Thx Rick!
What a talented yet humble young lady, amazing talent. I enjoyed every minute of her interview, I know Barbados would love her to visit, hopefully one of these days.
Such a wonderful interview! I´m so glad you took the time to let her talk at lenght.
What a lovely soul! Great interview, thanx Rick!
I can't remember enjoying such a long interview so much, I was captivated. What a wonderful woman, smart, funny, intelligent, erudite, generous with her praise, and multi-talented; and Rick, what a great interviewer.
it seems to me that the host is unusually impressed with the guest's incredible skills.
Love that she opens by talking about the Bengali love of arts. It’s in our blood. So happy to see her enjoying global success, long may it continue. My boys are both learning instruments and it’s great showing them someone cool (and young, unlike their boring old dad) to look up to who effortlessly blends cultures.
A wholesome interview! Proud of you, Mohini, as an Indian. ❤
This woman is so ALIVE it's infectious. Love her honesty and intelligence: inspiring and uplifting. Wonderful content Rick - emphatically subscribed! 😄
Mohini is amazing! And she is humorous too talking about the 'both sides' 😂Thank you for sharing this.👌 From Nigeria 🇳🇬
Absolutely admire the clarity and precision of her thoughts and her playing! Also love the way she translates Indian polyrhythms on to the bass for the western listener (these rhythms are commonplace in Indian music). There are in fact are beat cycles like Sare-panch (five and a half beats) or Sare-Na (nine and a half beats). Indian percussion go to such incredible complexity and depth, very glad that a virtuoso like Dey is embracing and incorporating these into a western instrument for a wider audience.
She's stupendous in her craft & she's also intelligent to boot!!😊👍🙏👏👏
I love everything about this, but what I love most of all is the smile that completely takes over her face as soon as she starts playing.
I'd like to hear her live, she is amazing. Fantastic interview.
That was great - I’ve been wanting to know more about Mohini for years! Mohini - you are pure joy. What an amazing story!
Ricky, Ricky, Ricky..you keep bringing on these fantastic musicians to interview, but what is the most compelling is how interesting the stories they have to tell and how you artfully coax these stories out of them..
She was clearly born with musical inclination, that along with her thousands of hours of practice and intelligence, made her a music machine!
Most interesting interview I've seen in a long time. Mohini is just so far ahead of everybody else. She is talented, intelligent, and humorous beyond measure!!!
Amazing interview Rick and an equally amazing Woman. Mohini has shown a mature and ego-less human nature which is refreshing.
"I don't like to talk". talks non stop for 1 hour :D
Great interview!
Rick Beato is just hitting out of the park left and right. This is legit one of the best music-related channels in YT.
Young, vibrant, creative, dedicated very talented musician of this century a Bass guitarist that’s Lady is Mohini of India whose bass playing sounds like she has brought a great fusion of eastern and western music that sounds really exciting and good to hear for ears always rejoiced her playing and admired her actually she deserves an international recognition in this instrument playing ! What a beautiful interview she did. Being legend she is so simple and humble. She is inspiration. Great respect 👏
What a fantastic talent and amazing musician.
I love it when Rick interviews musicians and draws out all of the interesting questions and answers but this one hit the spot. Mohin is a great talent and I wish her all the best!
Been following her playing for years. One of the most innovative bass players in a long time.
Another unstoppable interview. Her energy is something else!
First time I saw her play I was blown away. Now, listening to her musical depth and skill, words fail me. So skilled too, the triplet quintuplet stuff, wild.....
What a force this young woman is!
Contrary to common belief, India has a long tradition of fantastic female sitar players and musicians.
She is an amazing player... Thank, Rick, for this interview...
This is exactly what Prince was all about..young people becoming real musicians..I believe if he had been around he would have had her touring with him..She reminds me of his bassist, Rhonda. Keep up the good work.
prince would have loved her for sure
She's a ROLE MODEL... Fought with her Dad, Moved out at 17, Independent, Business Woman, Married, Musician, Fashion Designer, Artist...and She came back...and asked her Dad...? Did i make you proud? He said...Yes! My little Baby...! And he was the Happiest Man Alive...and Left Happily inside...as you can see He raised a strong Woman... \m/
“Both sides”, hahaha. Great interview. Rick, you get nothing but admiration from me, no matter what you do. Mohini was so brilliant and expressive as an artist and in her openness and cogent delivery. So funny she says ”I don’t like to talk”, because she did that a lot but in an informative and wonderful way. You were great to not only understand what she was saying, ask the great questions, and then get out of the way for the answers. I will be following her. You, I have nothing but respect and admiration for.
She has a smile that would light up not just a room but an auditorium.😁 She makes me happy just watching and listenting to her. If smiling was a talent she would win all the awards.
Amazing to see Mohini get more and more recognition and footage. Totally deserved. Thank you Rick!
From 48:38 ...when she plays this amazing riff... and then says, Bla Bla Bla! Sort of like Albert Einstein coming up with and telling somebody about a formula like E equals MC squared... And then saying "Bla Bla Bla, whatever...!" (to GENIUS!)
Mohini is amazing, awesome stuff Rick. \m/
Pure intelligence, soul and expression. Thank u Rick for such a lovely engagement.
This young lady is the complete package. I love ❤️ her so much. Thank you for introducing me to her work.
Wow, from what I know of the bass players back in the 1980s and 90s to what has progressed now is incredible. I started working for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1988. Flea blew me away and everyone else from that era. I seen him perform live from the lens of my video camera from 88' until 1991 when their BSSM album broke into the mainstream. Then Les Claypool arrived with Primus. The joke became that Les gave Flea bass lessons, or was it that Flea gave Les bass lessons? I'm not a fan of a bass with more than four strings. As Flea would always say; 'Any old four string will do'. The fact that Mohini can rip this five string like this is totally bad ass. Two thumbs up. 🎸🎶🎼
