Destiny 2 Lore - Why is Rhulk's Pyramid Stuck in Savathun's Throne World? The Failure of the Ahslid!

- Destiny 2's Lore and Story from the Vow of the Disciple Raid armour tells us about why the Disciple of the Witness, Rhulk has a pyramid stranded in Savathun's throne world. The answer might lie with an ancient civilisation that he failed to bring into the Witness' fold. The Ahslid. This is their story.

Facts
You are not wrong
You took the words right out of my mouth
Funny how Rhulk is partially responsible for the Hive. He taught Savathun and helped her become the Witch Queen. He was even, seemingly envious of her. But one could argue, that Rhulk wasn’t cunning enough for Savathun. As she trapped him in his Pyramid. That would be eventually become his grave. Savathun may have known that if we were strong enough to outwit her, than we’d be strong enough to kill Rhulk. In a way, Savathun got the last laugh on the Disciple.
She trapped him for us because she knew what was coming for him
It was a win win scenario, in case of her defeat, a pretty genius move in its simplicity. If she was defeated by us, either we would defeat the disciple and she gets victory over him after death, or we fall too him, and her death is avenged. Either way, she wins, in a funny way.
I can't help but feel like Rhulk might be falling into hubris in thinking he was punished by the witness. I feel the witness simply put Rhulk where Rhulk was needed, then cast him aside, like a screwdriver for which one no longer has any screws.
It is possible. I dont think The Witness sees it as punishment. Rhulk failed and therefore was sent somewhere else because his purpose in a certain area ran out. I don’t think The Witness itself values personal loyalty but knows how to keep its disciples loyal.
That also leave Savathun bc her body was collected by the Hidden, whilst her ghost escaped and was continuing plans (the message board quests) so rhulk could be another pawn too. Savy was, then we showed her the truth. What if rhulk and savy are just to buy the Witness time? What if we are just playing further into a grand scheme we've barely unveiled?
@@BuglordSupreme I wonder about that too, I wonder if the Witness continued to see Rhulk as a valuable disciple, Rhulk preaches loyalty to him constantly, his last words were asking the Witness for forgiveness, and I wonder if the Witness cared at all
Rhulk’s lore is a work of art. A genuine masterpiece.
I mean the entire inside of the Pyramid is like an art museum. So it would fit.
The lore this year is the pinnacle of destiny. Rhulk is such a cool character
How so?
@@Dlo2018 please tell me how this raid lore isn't some of the most genius shit Bungie has pulled in a long while.
(Keep in mind this is from the perspective of contest mode being off)
We go to raid this Pyramid with absolutely no information about it or what could possibly be in it, we just know that it's there and it's a potential threat that must be explored and handled.
Rhulk *immediately* cuts Mara off from giving us more intel about him and the Pyramid, and continues to entertain us as if we're guests. It becomes clear that he doesn't quite see us as a threat, based on his dialog- which, by the way, Rhulk has more dialog than any other raid boss in the game's history.
The final boss encounter is almost slightly uncomfortable with how relatively easy it was to kill someone as imposing as Rhulk, it's not like his boss fight is mechanically difficult or anything, and it leaves us with more questions than answers.
THEN, you start going back and doing the Preservation mission and reading through the lore books, and you learn about who Rhulk was and just how wildly powerful The Guardian is for slaying someone such as him- and how this one singular entity changes the entire scope and perspective of the power structures at play within the universe we play in.
And we just... killed him.
The lore in this expansion is absolutely some of the best they've released. Don't even get me started on Season of the Risen
@@VIISkies the fight against him being easy doesn't mean he's less strong, it's just the mechanics that are simple, but from the lore perspective, it was a hard fight, comparable to oryx
@@VIISkies they literally have 100 open ended stories and made a character up out of thin air for you to defeat before you even learn the story. It’s half ass, wing and a prayer story telling. You’re just so starved for a new story (because we’ve been waiting for and working against savathun for like 5 fucking years) that this is incredible to you. It’s just objectIvey not.
I find it strange that you attribute killing rhulk before learning about rhulks existence (in terms of race, origin or even the idea of a disciples begin with) as some kind of boon. It’s bad storytelling. It isn’t some radical idea for storytelling. What it means is bungies overlooked the future narrative at every turn and the only way to keep going is to start introducing out of the blue characters.
“Next we’ll fight spideris. The half machine half arachnid disciple of the witness. Spideris has been instrumental in the witness’ campaigns, and has been pulling the strings from the background for a decade and you just didn’t know cause spiders is sneaky”
Straight up WACK
@@MrReadySetDance Damn bro, who hurt you lol.
Just reading through a sample of the top comments here and it's so cool to see how many disparate theories there are about this. Everyone has a different interpretation of the event and it's really awesome to see the ideas getting fleshed out!
I have a theory about rhulk o lore daddy mine
I think Rhulk is the symbol of peak male performance now now hear me out let’s look at the examples first off he can drive a pyramid, he has a father figure, he has abs, hes DRIPPED, the way he talks to people is decided of how much worth they are to him for example “I am rhulk”, he’s a bachelor, even tho he’s a bachelor he has a ring on his finger so that means he’s married to the grindset, he has a big black glaive, he taunts his killers, and in his millions or billons of years he’s lived he’s only failed a goal twice. in my estimation it is clear that Rhulk obtains pure chad energy.
@@imrunningoutofnames2413 jesus loves you
@@choppyhaze2 you sure?
A raid lore playlist would be good, especially when trying to find them at a later time.
I think that the Ahslid may have been not a planned part of the Witness' goals, but merely a test to see how Rhulk would behave when given the choice between making an army or honing a disciple.
@@xvx_k1r1t0_xvxkillme7 . . . Dang. Especially when considering how they were once a noble and proud people and the scorn are twisted versions of the fallen that analogy lines up with Tolkiens interpretation of orcs being former elves.
I feel Rhulk, like Calus, is purposefully blinded to the whole plan by the witness, so as to never ruin it, or give Rhulk enough power or knowledge to defect.
Wise enough to see and act, yet blind enough to reach out for guidance and direction.
Knowledge is power, so I can see that being the case.
I think the Witness also expects that of our Guardian.
@@rithvikmuthyalapati9754 and we have done so so far.
check out the entry "the cave" on the RoN lore book. you hit the nail right on the head
Between Rhulk being the last of the Lubraeans, and Riven (presumably) being the last of the Ahamkara, it just hit me that the Guardians have basically rendered 2 species extinct.
To be fair, we only killed the one so it’s like opening a jar after it was already loosened
@@mrmr3657 in fairness riven is trapped in a death loop though
@@HollywoodExile shes not. canonically the last wish raid only happens one time. remember, the curse cycle didnt exist until redeem had beaten the raid. rivens death WAS the last wish, as she cursed the dreaming city to be stuck in a loop
Mara has an ahamkara egg in the room she was in during her season.
They were already notionally extinct anyway
I love how they intertwined Rhulk and the Witness' doings all the way to essentially 20,000 years before D1 took place. Best Destiny lore so far.
The real big question that shouldn’t be overlooked here is, how the fuck does rhulk know what a frog is?
There are frogs on Nessus so there must be frogs in other places.
I had the same questions when Savathûn said she wouldn't play second fiddle to Oryx. Do the Hive have fiddles?!
plot holes?
@@BuglordSupreme That doesn't explain the fact that he's using Earth's name for them, at this point in time Earth doesn't even exist.
@@AlexEatsCats At this point, why not ask why he is addressing us in and writing records in human languages? It's a silly, but understandable thing to nitpick.
Honestly WQ lore is amazing - the raid in particular has opened the universe back up and blown everything open. I'd love a playlist for raid lore please.
Byf, the more important question is why the Skrank Gang is still a threat, and only you can answer this burning question.
Yes I’d very much like a playlist of raid lore videos. Usually, I’m favorable to a collection of videos about the same subject becoming a playlist even if it’s not that big
Rhulk was basically the Grand Admiral Thrawn of the Destiny universe and that connection just broke my brain
I don’t think it carries much weight in the lore at all, but in the ghost shell from earned from collecting pages of the raid lore book, Imperious sun shell, it documents an interaction between rhulk, a ghost, and I believe the traveller speaking through that ghost. Kind of cool but again, not exactly a fundamental piece of story, just thought someone might want to read it
yeah it’s a weird piece of lore but i loved it tbh
Sure sounds significant. Time to read!
Thanks for the comment. One of my favorite lore interactions after I read it.
I’ve been loving hearing the lore of Rhulk and the Witness.
Did Rhulk oversee all of the osmium siblings or just Savathun? I wonder if Oryx and Xivu had an overseer like Rhulk.
A lore playlist would be a great thing to have cause sometimes I wanna go back and re listen to some videos but I wanna do it in order so I feel like the whole of the story is placed out in front of me
Love ya Byf, Been listening to your videos at work a lot lately, they’ve been getting me through the day easier
>Barges into a planetary system
>Slowly manipulates a species into adopting violent, paranoid tendencies until they wipe themselves out
>"I am Rhulk"
>Refuses to elaborate further
>leaves
Rhulk is on the Sigma Male grindset
Nothing I read seemed to imply Uun was removed at any point. Would be interesting if we found him at some point or if he was trapped in the pyramid.
Byf, thanks for all the amazing content man!
More episodes! hell yeah. No a single drop in mind says no towards a nice series with in depth analysis on Rhulk!!!! Can’t wait for next episode!!!
So do we know if the symbols are really prophecizing the future, or are they telling stories of the past. Or . . . Are they scattered about because there are so many possibilities of the stories they may tell?
What if it does predict the future and dictate the past at the same time
Nope. Just a big fat assumption it's a prophecy but isn't that the fun of lore videos?
Nope also could just be a plan as well. Considering “trapped inside savathuns throne world” isn’t on there
I heard people call it the prophecy of doom like those in order in the wishing wall thing buts together something that sounds like what will happen like "the witness will drink from the traveler" you'll have to find a video on it its very cool
I think a playlist is a good idea but maybe for all topics going forward? It would really help to be able to jump to a playlist for any lore stuff one may have missed on the channel, love the work you do byf! Keep it up!
The way you make your playlists now is very clear and easy to follow. But I wouldn't mind a separate playlist that just has the lore surrounding the raid for example.
Playlists would be fantastic they make sharing the videos on a particular topic much easier and keep things in their proper order. Great content as always keep them coming 👍👍
It might be a question asked long ago, but yes, it will be nice having a Playlist with similar topics.
Done great as always, thank you very much for telling me the story of destiny 🙏❤️🍀
I would definitely love a playlist for this raid and maybe past raids if possible
Great video as always. I'd love to have a playlist as it makes it easier to return to down the line.
great video per usual! thank you for creating content :) i always look forward to your videos.
I listen to this as background noise and I looked over at the resonant fury mask. And I just can’t get over how the helmet looks like a crude smiley face.
I'm new to Destiny, everything you do is fascinating to me. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into the videos. Thanks everyone 👍👍💛
Welcome aboard!
I love Byfs videos but is the volume really low for anyone else? I have to turn up my volume way up.
A play list would be amazing! I love listening to these videos in the background while doing other Destiny stuff
Heck yeah. Another Byf video!! Whoot whoot🥳🥳
With no surprise… more outstanding content!
Thanks Byf!!!
Soooo it's all a "Pyramid" scheme?! Nailed it Bungie. How many planets do I need to groom and recruit before I get my own fleet, guys?
Good question though I'd rather give those pyramids a paint job maybe flames or racing stripes idk family would help
Just imagine raiding with byf, that voice in your headset as a fireteam member❤
Maybe the witness at that time really was one person? Calus said the voice in the darkness was thousands of voices, and when we see the witness they have all those faces coming out of their flesh-smoke-head lookin ass. Maybe the true final shape is actually only one person that holds all the souls or spirits or whatever of all life that ever existed. Maybe the mentions of the final shape being a knife
Love it! Keep going with the Rhulk lore!!
First of all, love the Channel and all your amazing work. Your comment on the Witness adressing himself as “I” instead of “We” got me thinking. Lately we have come across some dodgy messages supposedly coming from our Vanguard superiors meant to raise suspicion between them, but upon closer inspection had some strange errors or “typo’s” in them, which ultimately made clear that Savathun was trying to weaken the Vanguard from the inside out. What if the mission Rhulk quotes, believed to be from the Witness, was in fact also from Savathun, thus weakening Rhulks position with the Witness and remove an important commanding officer from the Witness’s ranks?
i look forward to these so much man, thank you
Playlist would be amazing! Such a good story Bungie has created, way different than what we all assumed was happening.
great videos so far. I would love to have a Playlist for the raid videos so I can watch them back to back
Wow, im never this early lol
Hi Never This Early, I’m dad
Same.
The early club
Yes please give us a playlist! I wanna rewatch them all together some day
Definitely would like a playlist for these videos!
It would be awesome if you did a single video with all the lore related to Savathun, Rhulk and the relation between them.
I recommend playlists for all your videos based on topic (Vow, DSC, Books of Sorrow, etc.)
Really like your vids and yes Playlist would be great
A playlist would be great! Amazing content as always My name is Byf
My favorite and Best lore channel so much work the reading is exactly how my nears brain reads stories get into it A+ Channel
what rhulk was doing... reminds me of the back story of omni man, their race gone through this process of mass destruction that actually achieved the perfect society,
which tbf the same hardship and strict society structure can be seen within the cabal empire now... would that be why xivu arath destroy their home at the first place?
Except it wasn’t even by Omni man’s own estimation at one point if I recall correctly but he could never see that while under the dogmatic influence that he was made to believe.
A playlist is probably a good idea. Not really for anyone viewing these now, but months or years down the line if someone wants to look up the lore for the raid or stumbles upon the video through algorithmic means, it will make it easier for them to get a proper story and flow without having to bring up your channel and scroll all the way down to the video they just watched and see what came before and after this video.
Great video!
I still feel like there's something we're all missing. A secret we haven't uncovered yet. I hope to find it soon
It’s the traveller, we don’t know anything about it at all.
We know more about the darkness and the witness then we know about the light and the traveller.
I fully believe we are on the precipice of learning exactly what’s going on between the light and dark in a big way.
Xivu Arath
Thanks for the amazing lore videos and yes I'd love a playlist for the raid lore videos
I'm with him, who else!!??!!
Thanks for the work
I definitely need a playlist for these!
I like how the Resonant Fury mask has a little smiley face on it
I am more into this series than anything else because it’s current and new information that we’re all learning together
Yes I would absolutely like a playlist. I recommended that in the first Vow lore video's comments too
Good to get this video back, was so mad it was taken down with all the copyright bullshit
In the wellspring mission or maybe it was the web mission. Ghost mentions this is a stock pile of energy to trap the traveler just as savathun did to the pyramid ship.
Step-Witness didn't help him
This guy really is the vaatividia of Destiny.
The Vow Hunter Chestplate is by far the best one in the Game! Especially on a Huntress. It looks soo damn good and unique.
raid lore playlist? yes please
So many mysteries still being discovered and explained
14:20 we gonna talk about how he ran by like 4 bricks of heavy and an exotic engram
Playlist 🙏 🙏 my son isn getting into destiny with me and I'm trying to navigate the story best I can, these help.
A Playlist would make things organized that way all the videos are in a place making watching easier without having to click around other videos
2:01 small detail, but that sentence was a statement, not a question as how you read it. Doesn’t end in a question mark. Rhulk wasn’t questioning his master, but accepting his place
I like to think the Pyramid just got "yoinked"
Definitely give us a series bro
Lore daddy strikes again!!
What does a penguin say as it slides across the ice?
“Ahslid”
Maybe the de-pluralization of The Witness in Rhulks raid armor lore recants is a subtle nod to Savathuns betrayal by her portraying herself to Rhulk as The Witness? I mean, after knowing Osiris was Savathun and replaying the old DMT mission you can notice subtle differences in dialogue and interactions from “Osiris”.
captions on a byf vid fINALLY
I want Rhulks darkness subclass so that I can socially darwinize in the crucible.
I want rhulk powers to roundhouse the crucible.
@@xzygreen8938 a titan melee would be the roundhouse.
The day that Destiny is over. Where there will be no more DLCs, no more power grinds, no more exotics to go after..will definitely be a sad day..not because I won't have much to do..but because of stories like these..Byf you give scores and scores of color to a few hundred million pixels..Thank you again
Are we not gonna talk about how satisfying that ending was?????
Yes please; to the Playlist of shorter videos. In fact, I personally prefer that over long-format videos...not that I'll easily miss/skip anything the lore daddy releases 👏 👏 👏
A Raid playlist would be nice
Is it just me, or does Rhulk seem absolutely desperate for the Witness's approval? I get a "notice me Senpai" vibe from all of the lore.....like Genos to Saitama in the beginning of One Punch Man
Calus was the same
Because they are fanatics and are chosen due to their absolute loyalty. The Witness will tell you to turn entire civilizations into dust and only someone who is completely loyal to it will not only follow through with it but see it as the way things have to be
Playlist sounds good to me
Just waiting on the Netflix/My Name is Byf contract. Could you imagine the revenue that would generate?
A Playlist would be very helpful :)
Starting to feel like The Witness is Oprah of the future: you get a pyramid, you get a pyramid, everyone gets a pyramid!!
I mean that is part of the plan. Make every being in the universe fight to the death to see what power stands at the end as the ultimate life.
Great video, great lore.
Why the hunter mask have a happy face?
My question is; in the end did Uun become a disciple to Rhulk the same way he became to The Witness? If so might we face it eventually in battle?
I was wondering that too why didn’t they put Uun in the raid that would of been interesting?
in the end, Uun died
@@NobleVI_343 where does it say that
@@applinarcus Rhulk literally kills him
@@NobleVI_343 it never states directly I just looked at the cloak lore he doesn’t clarify killing Uun but this is problematic because I’m the other lore Rhulk is very clear when it comes to killing but in this he’s all over the place and doesn’t get to the point.
BYF. VOLUME. MAKE IT LOUDER PLEASE.
Yes to playlist
Playlist....yesssssss ( Varkis voice off )
lovin this series
Wow, I'm usually here an hour or two after these come out. This is a first.
I wonder if Rhulk and the witnees let Uun live or he was truly the last of his now dead race, maybe he could be a potental raid boss or strike boss in the future.
