Hi, I have a 1980 Grady that has moderate oxidation I would like to get rid of. Before I dive in and spend hundreds on a 7424xp,pads,polish etc, I went ahead and wet sand a spot with 1000 grit by hand. I have not compounded the spot. Of course it is not shining;and while it is better than it was, I still see oxidation. Should I try 800 by hand, or would the DA machine make a more noticeable result?
Michael A I wouldn't stop at #1000 grit. That's too low of a grit to try to remove. I finish out using #2000, #3000, #4000 or #5000. You also need to make sure you're working on gel-coat and not a specialty marine paint like Awlgrip.
Michael A That doesn't sound right unless the oxidation is SUPER DEEP. Seems like #600 grit would remove enough gel-coat to get you to virgin gel-coat that you ca polish. Have you tried re-sanding using higher grits of paper and then compounding to restore gloss? -Mike Phillips
Michael A How has the gel-coat been taken care of since 1980? I restored the gel-coat on a 1967 Starline DeVille to the point it looked brand new. But if I didn't polish this old gel-coat often it would quickly oxidize to white again. (it's an orange boat).
This is not realistic usage for the normal DIY person. The cost for all the products and tools is outrageous. I am going back to old school and will hand sand, buff/polish. I also came here to see how a gel coat was properly finished and not interested in your advertising other products.
While most of this video isn't bad advice. The 1000, 3000, 5000 grit progression is not going to workout very well... 1000, 1500, 2000 at least .. 1000 to 3000 is too big of a jump in grit size
very nice video on gel coat work!!!
Great video, I use the same process for Boats.
This is not a video for amateurs, more for experience body shops and detailing.
Thanks, good info - now I add soap to my spray bottle:)

My point is I have gone down, to a 600 and still see oxidation when it dries. Is that normal until I go back UP through the grits?

All of that prep work why would you not ceramic coat it instead of wax?
only 360p :-/
So you have to have all those different brands and models of polishers? Yeah, ok.
That still has a lot of orange peel.
