Hi Captain Joe, Your fiberglass, gelcoat, epoxy, build and repair technique and DIY videos are absolutely the best on the internet! I greatly appreciate all of the time and effort and knowledge that you put into these! I have put a link to your channel in my sailing club's newsletter (~130 people) and I have told many boaters at my marina to check out your channel. Thanks again and all the best from California! 🧡
I used all the additives you mentioned and my boat came out great, the only thing different was I purchased a 2.5mm air gun from Amazon. Thanks for all the diy focused work you do for us.
My favorite channel now days. Such a great job verbalizing details, I could see listening to the sound track as a book on tape for review of details being there is so much great information packed in.
Hi captain Joe, love the information and knowledge share. So here is some for you. I am a 38 years framer. If the water goes on your structure of wood you should seal them with diesel and engine old oil. This will avoid mushrooms and decay of the structure
From my experiences spraying with the HVLP guns I was screaming get it out of the gun between the 3rd and 4th coat. It would have been plugged up solid for me. You make it seem too easy !
I think it's a great that you're taking the time to make videos demonstrating a lot of the basic skills like this before starting the series on the project boat. Those videos will make a lot more sense to us and be much easier to follow since you will have already educated on on these processes and will be able to focus on the restoration. Well you have answered one of my questions over the years about hvlp spray gun for gel coats. I will try my very very inexpensive harbor freight spray gun in the near future. Sure do enjoy this channel! Thank you.
Glad to help! Just remember the smaller 1.5 mm tips are best used on small jobs, as they will not deliver near as much gelcoat as a 2.5. It is also important to thin the gelcoat with styrene, and the clear additive makes a big difference. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for all your videos! I did my first gelcoat spray today and it went very well. On a recommendation from someone else, I actually used a $15 spray gun from Harbor Freight and I drilled the nozzle out to about 2mm and it worked really well.
Here in Thailand, we don't have fancy formulas, we have to make our own lol. I warm food-grade paraffin wax on the stove, add mono styrene, mix it well, and it stabilizes with a long shelf life. Then I add it to the gel coat as a surfacing wax. I have a 2.5-nozzle spray gun, I noticed you didn't want to scare everyone with the pot system gun's price...Yes, acetone is a solvent, not a good thinner, it weakens any product. Mono Styrene is compatible.

Awesome video. Your channel is great because it targets DIYs trying to do things in a professional way. I sprayed my boat hull with a cheap HVLP gun as you described in this video and for the most part it came out great. All gelcoat I sprayed was mixed 50:50 with 904-001 Duratec Clear Hi-Gloss Additive and 1.5% MEKP. The temp was between 75 and 65f during the entire process. Foundation color coat, metal flake coat, and then 3 clear coats. That was yesterday and I ran out of time (and daylight) at the end. Now I'd like to add another 1 or 2 clear coats. Question: Can I wet-sand the (mostly) cured gelcoat with, say 400 and then add another coat or 2 of clear? Same mix, might catalyze to 1.75% this time though. Thoughts? Thanks much!
Awesome, it sounds like you're doing a great job! In my experience, gelcoat likes and can take a little more aggressive sandpaper grit in its prep compared to automotive style paints. Not necessarily more than 220 for your application, but you might want to test and see what looks good to you. Just be careful not to sand through your base. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
@@FishBumpTV Thanks much for the reply!! I ended up machine (DA) sanding it thoroughly with wet 400 and then carefully hand sanded it with wet 240. I feel confident that I got enough "tooth" on the first day's sub-straight to hold the 4 additional coats of clear gel I added. Looks AWESOME with the exception of a little orange peal which was too much to sand out without having to worry about breaking through. You would see it but I bet 90% of people wouldn't. Thanks again for your great content. PS - man I wish I could go fishing with you.... Some of my best life experiences were Florida fishing - both inshore and offshore.
I used a dump gun but just recently bought the GX4 from The Gelcoater. It comes with a 4.8mm nozzle and sprays gelcoat straight with no dilution. The dump gun is definitely faster but no where near the control over the spray. The gun cost $110 so in the same ballpark.
Hi Joe. Absolutely love the content. One suggestion I would have that is even a step below this style gun… would love to see a tutorial on using those disposable Preval sprayers you can get at Home Depot and Lowe’s. Would be a good option for those of us that don’t have an air source. I know my own marina uses them for small and even medium gelcoat repairs. They seem to get great results so would love some tips and tricks on using them
@@FishBumpTV read my mind! I know you can get good results with them but I was never sure how much to thin down the gelcoat. I know they get cold as you use them also
Good evening.. love the videos excellent work love the explanation on your videos i have a question i have a relatively brand new boat have some nicks on the inside floor which i have filled up really small. On top of that i see that the white color on my non skid has some spots where the paint looks like it’s fading do yo recommend using a paint roller or spray on the floor? would you notice the difference from the floor to the side walls ? Or would you just recommend to paint the whole interior also what do i use white gelcoat or marine paint ?
Hey Joe. Thank you for the excellent gelcoat video! How thick would you estimate that gelcoat to be? I have had problems of sanding through the gelcoat when doing the final polishing steps. If that happens I seem to be back at step one. Sand, reapply gelcoat, polish, etc. Thanks for all your wonderful content, and thanks for sharing it with us.
I usually recommend 5 or 6 coats of gelcoat total if you are going to be wetsanding out to a full shine. The total thickness is probably around a 1/16 of an inch or so. That's pretty thick compared to automotive style paints. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching!
Thanks for the great video. I've dabbled in gel coat application on my boat, from small nicks with spreaders up to rolling it on when I redid the transom last year. There is a ton of info about HVLP guns on the internet, but most of it seems to be pretty short on technical details. With regard to orifice size, is the biggest difference that you can get heavier coverage/faster deposition rates with a larger orifice (i.e. 2.5mm vs. 1.5mm), or is it that you can get away with thinning it less with the larger orifice? In other words, would 'any' size orifice work if you are patient enough, or is there a minimum size needed before you just can't get it to spray no matter how much you thin it?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! It's kind of both as regards your question. A 2.5 to 3.5 tip is really the standard for larger gelcoat application jobs. The 1.5 like we used in the video will do fine with small jobs if the gelcoat has been thinned properly, but I would go any smaller or you just won't get any material flow. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching!
Hey Cpt Joe, Do you have any experience with adding glitter to a gelcoat? If so would it still be possible to use a sprayer to apply or would you have to roll it on?
Sorry, not much experience with adding glitter or metal flake to gelcoat. Maybe I can do something on that subject for you all in the near future. Thanks for watching
About to dive into another CC conversion. Taking a 38 Scarab to a CC, making a lot of running surface changes, down to the hull skin rebuild. My last one had good gel coat on the bottom and we used awl craft 2000 on sides and interior. I think I want to do gelcoat chine down. Whats a good DIY rig for that volume of gelcoat to apply? TIA
Wow, that sounds like a major project! I have a Binks 2001 gw external mix, with a 5 gallon CATechnology pressure pot for big gelcoat jobs. The Gelcoater is a 1 qt gravity feed spray rig that runs up to a 4.5mm tip specifically made for gelcoat applications. It is very reasonably priced as well. I will be doing a review on this rig soon here on the channel. I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best with your project!
U may have covered this before but can you spray GelCoat directly onto Coosa or should Coosa always have glass with a resin prime prior to gel coating? Great vid.
You should be able to gelcoat bare coosa board, but it is going to be very porous and show lots of pinholes. It will probably require several coats, or prime it with resin before gelcoating. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I'm currently doing a small skif. I have the topside almost finished. I'm gearing up to do the outside of the hull. Do you have a source to buy gellcoat by the five gallon buckets? I've been using Total Boat. Only one gallon at a time. It's crazy expensive...
Yes, gelcoat can get pricey. You might check with fiberglass warehouse. I have been using their gelcoat here on the channel, and I have been very happy with their products. They are offering a discount for fish bump tv viewers that will definitely save you some money. Use the code fish bump tv. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
Thank you for your videos and information sharing. I wanted to get your input for doing a non-skid flooring on my small boat, should I do an Eva foam flooring much like SeaDek or just gel coat with non-skid ? I was wanting to do a foam flooring on the bottom and a non-skid gel on the top deck? What are your feelings about it? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge…!
Hey, Joe! Would it be okay to just spray Gelcoat (with wax and the Orca clear additive) by itself on areas where the original Gelcoat is wearing a little “thin”? Or would I need to go through the whole process of several coats of “pure” Gelcoat and then do subsequent coats with wax added? Thanks buddy!
If you can see through the gelcoat, or actual fiberglass is exposed, then I would use pure gelcoat, or a 25 percent clear, 75 percent gelcoat mix. Otherwise you could use a 50/50 mix of gelcoat and clear, just remember that 50/50 is the max percentage of clear to gelcoat base. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
@ The fiberglass is not exposed, however in some areas there are little tiny black spots…..almost like little “pin-holes” in a group…..anywhere from the size of your thumb to the size of your hand. I’m assuming that’s the Gelcoat wearing thin in those areas, but I’m not 100% positive on that.
so will it always come out textured / orange peeled like that ? Is it always ness, to wetsand/buff . I am used to painting where off my gun its perfect . Let me know buddy thanks
Gelcoat almost always has a texture to it when sprayed. Product like Orca Air dry, and Duratec help it lay down much better than straight gelcoat. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have a binks gun with 5 gal tank the MEKP holder has rotted what have you replaced your with . Are there any videos on how to adjust the binks. Have you ever tried just resin through the binks?
The little plastic canisters for the mekp squeeze bottle that I use are a replacement fit for the ones on the binks. Yes, you can run resin through the binks system if you want to. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Ladies and gentleman, please note the spray gun used in this video will not work upside down, It is not the one to use if you are intending to paint under your boat laying on your back. I tried a few years ago and ot ended in tears. I wish I had this Video as a reference back then. Thank you Fish bump tv.
Do you clean the spray gun between gelcoat coats? That gun spray nozzle seems narrow,I was told at least 2.3-2.5mm?I guess hvlp gravity fed is preferred
Sometimes you do, and sometimes you don't. It depends on the cure rate and how many coats you plan on applying. Yes, 1.5 mm is on the small side for gelcoat, as I mentioned in the video. But can work fine on smaller jobs with gelcoat that has been thinned. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
It could be done either way, but i would lean towards spraying. Just remember that the 1.5 mm tip gun we used in this video is for small areas and touch-ups. You will need a 2.5 mm or larger tip gun for spraying larger areas. I will be testing and new 3m spray gun in the next week or two that should work very well with gelcoat. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
Hi, Joe. I hope you're doing well. I'm really trying to rap my head. Around the wax additive, what does the wax specifically do? Does it make the gel coat glossy? What is the function of the wax
Wax in the gelcoat closes it off from the air so it will fully cure. Its used on exterior coats. You use gelcoat with no wax in a mold since it will be covered by glass and resin that will cure and seal it off from the air.
Wax additive allows the gelcoat to cure hard and tack free. Without wax or a specialized clear additive, the gelcoat will remain tacky. Tacky gelcoat is fine if you plan on adding more coats or plan on fiberglassing over it, as in a mold. But tacky gelcoat is bad if you are going to try and sand it, or use it in any way. I hope this helps clarify. Thanks for watching
For the bargain conscious .... Harbor Freight sells a very reasonably priced HVLP spray rig that honestly can compete pretty nicely with a $1000 graco. It's obviously not going to last but it's under $125 w/ coupon. And to be fair the air sprayers are as good as they get, but I prefer HVLP for extra fine finishes.

Some of my best life experiences were Florida fishing - both inshore and offshore.
thanks for all the tips, peace
Thanks for watching!
I used a dump gun but just recently bought the GX4 from The Gelcoater. It comes with a 4.8mm nozzle and sprays gelcoat straight with no dilution. The dump gun is definitely faster but no where near the control over the spray. The gun cost $110 so in the same ballpark.
Very cool! Thanks for the feedback and for watching!
They seem to get great results so would love some tips and tricks on using them
You got it! I actually just bought one! Thanks for the suggestion
Very well done 👍👍
Many thanks!
Great videos, great work! Thanks!
Glad you like them!
I use harbor freight Siphon gun with 2.5mm tip. I mix my gel coat 50/50 with Duratech High gloss. It flows like paint.
Yep, that's a good combo! Thank for the comment!
Hey Cpt Joe,
Do you have any experience with adding glitter to a gelcoat? If so would it still be possible to use a sprayer to apply or would you have to roll it on?
Sorry, not much experience with adding glitter or metal flake to gelcoat. Maybe I can do something on that subject for you all in the near future. Thanks for watching

Nice. Show us vertical next. Orange peel in gel coat is acceptable. I just want some in there. 😂

@@FishBumpTV Thank you so much... Ill look forward to the review as well.

Hello, I'm from Indonesia
Welcome to the channel, and thanks for watching all of the way from Indonesia!!
What would you do if you are spraying a more vertical surface and get a drip?
so will it always come out textured / orange peeled like that ? Is it always ness, to wetsand/buff . I am used to painting where off my gun its perfect . Let me know buddy thanks
Gelcoat almost always has a texture to it when sprayed. Product like Orca Air dry, and Duratec help it lay down much better than straight gelcoat. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Is the mask rated for VOC's?
G'day what size micron disposal cone filters are used for gelcoat into the cup?

190 micron, thanks for watching!
Thank you
First View 🙌👍👍
Awesome!!👍
Ladies and gentleman, please note the spray gun used in this video will not work upside down, It is not the one to use if you are intending to paint under your boat laying on your back. I tried a few years ago and ot ended in tears. I wish I had this Video as a reference back then. Thank you Fish bump tv.
Very true! This style will not spray upside down. I will be testing one that will very soon though, so stay tuned and thanks for watching!
see you at 100K subs!
Haha, we're getting there!
@@FishBumpTV don't wanna jinx this, but am I seeing 1K increase in subs a week? shows how hard the team is working!
@@FishBumpTV which FL boat shows do you attend?
@@FishBumpTV would love to meet and greet
Do you clean the spray gun between gelcoat coats? That gun spray nozzle seems narrow,I was told at least 2.3-2.5mm?I guess hvlp gravity fed is preferred
Sometimes you do, and sometimes you don't. It depends on the cure rate and how many coats you plan on applying. Yes, 1.5 mm is on the small side for gelcoat, as I mentioned in the video. But can work fine on smaller jobs with gelcoat that has been thinned. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
So you spray it thinner than when you brush it on?
So if you were going to redo a 68 24 1/2 foot sleek craft jet boat would you spray it or roll it?
It could be done either way, but i would lean towards spraying. Just remember that the 1.5 mm tip gun we used in this video is for small areas and touch-ups. You will need a 2.5 mm or larger tip gun for spraying larger areas. I will be testing and new 3m spray gun in the next week or two that should work very well with gelcoat. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
Do you know what micron your strainer was. Mine are much slower so obviously yours are more coarse.
I believe they are 190 microns. Hope this helps and thanks for watching
As with most things, it's easier to apply on flat level surfaces. How about applying on near vertical surfaces?
I am sure I will show that when I start work on our 21 ft project boat. Thanks for watching
Very cool, thanks for the feedback!
metallic and pearls possibly with gelcoat
Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!
Can all Gelcoat/Flowcoat be sprayed?
Most can, but it usually needs some kind of thinning if spraying through a small tip spray rig. Thanks for watching!
How about a project building a dock box?
Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!
1.5% catalysts to gelcoat volume or gelcoat and clear additive combined
Combined volume.
I’ve used barrels of MEK for cleaning. Bad stuff

Hi Captain Joe!
Thanks for all the instructions your channel is my favourite!. What technique/process was used to integrate this ultra thin fiberglass laminated solar cells into the hulls of this boat: (check 2:38) ua-cam.com/video/w__zyNJ9F-s/v-deo.htmlsi=MFuswIUeC-zSjBCt
They seam to be perfectly blended with the body and I would be willlig to make couple of tests with solar cells on my project. Do you think they used clear gel coat on a mold? Any ideas how this can be accomplished?
A gun with a bigger than normal metal flake nozzle works OK...
Thanks for the info!
Love your videos but please don't let any kids in the shop with those Gatorade bottles lieing around. Just had someone die in ER from drinking from one that had a cleaner that was poisonous
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the videos! 100 percent, No children in our shop. The shop is also always under lock and key, and we have family on the property to keep an eye on everything. The bottles are also labeled, and usually difficult to reach when I am not using them. Of course, everyone should take safety measures, and don't do or use anything that you feel like is dangerous or unsafe. I'm sorry to hear about your experience, as I do have children of my own, and my heart goes out to anyone experiencing a loss like that!

Well, I learned NOT to spray PVA on gelcoat WITH wax and clear additive!! 🤣😂
Yeah, the wax and clear additive will act as the air inhibitor for the gelcoat. The pva is typically used to cure non-waxed gelcoat. Don't be discouraged, though. There is a learning curve when it comes to working with these materials. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@ Yeah, I had gotten used to spraying the PVA on UN-waxed gelcoat and got into a habit of it. Sprayed some PVA (without even thinking) on some WAXED gelcoat and watched my pretty, sprayed gelcoat ruin right before my eyes! Not discouraged….happy to learn. I LOVE this stuff thanks to YOU. 👍
