    I first do an an acid wash, it removes layers of calcium build up and water spots, saves time on sanding and buffing.

    Hi there. Just curious to know how large this boat was, and how long it took you to complete the entire job from wet sanding to final step. Thanks - Brian

      36-38’ I think it was about 30 hours. Only wet sanded hull and top piece same color. All the tan and white parts only got buffed. We do hundreds of boats every year started in 1992... Every boat is different.

      @@mobiledetail4youwhat's the point up going up in sandpaper if your grit is naturally loosing it's grit and become a higher grit

    I keep a spray bottle of water to clean off my sand paper often to help it to cut better, gel coat can quickly build up on the paper.

    Where is the water ? I spray my customers boats down constantly with my right hand , and spray the boat with a spray bottle with my left hand . I dont see any water applied with your DA Sander .

      It’s wet. I’m using a spray bottle. As you must know if you don’t keep it very wet the paper will clog… But some people do Also dry sand too. I don’t.

    I just wanna use 3000 grit for oxidation on my truck because I already put clearcoat on my truck when painted it weeks ago. Gonna do it with my rotary polisher though.

      How did that work out? 3000 is pretty light, but rotary is pretty aggressive.

      @@mobiledetail4you when did truck old one I should of used a clay bar at first but used a rotary but it still didn't help my truck good enough to get rid of all the oxidation. My new truck I don't need to use a clay bar on. Just my old truck saw more oxidation after I painted it but should of used a heavy duty clay bar on it instead of using this light duty claybar I got. Now I do have a heavy duty clay bar but not the truck nomore gave it to my younger brother. Just gonna use this 3d Cherry wax on my truck next year when it gets warm again.

      When doing cars, I always claybar. Unless I’m using Rotary buffer. Then there’s no point. If using orbital, claybar will always make a huge difference. Even on “ brand new cars”

      Once wet sanding is done properly regular maint waxing should be done. 6-12 months should work. If just polishing were done this boat would need hard core polishing again within months, as opposed to maint waxing which is not hard core polishing... Da waxing vs Rotary polishing...

    • @donpetrey8007
      @donpetrey8007 4 роки тому

    What do you do if you are getting pigtails do you just move up in grit and get it out that way or am I doing something wrong?

    • @Barry11997
      @Barry11997 Рік тому +1

      Buy an interface pad. Use a short throw da. The interface pad is a cousion for the regular da sand paper. Unless you want to spend a lot on Mirka foam sanding pads.

    Get a foam interface pad so you won’t dig into it so hard, less pigtails and sanding marks to worry about.

    I have a 1977 Century with the original Century logo/sticker on each side at the aft part of the boat. I'm worried about wetsanding over this and the license lettering at the bow (although the license stickers are easier to replace). Do you wetsand over these items? I'm concerned about causing damage, particularly to the original Century logo.

    • @mobiledetail4you
      @mobiledetail4you  4 роки тому

      Do not sand any sticker you don’t want to damage. Stickers and vinyl will not make it if you sand them. Maybe tape over them if you need to sand around them, but do so at risk of damaging them...

    • @mobiledetail4you

      Griots garage orbital polisher w hook and loop backing. Standard to this tool. I’m not using an interface (cushion pad) but it is recommended.

    On part of my wet sand the metallic flakes are white . I’ve been wet sanding the snot out of the boat because it’s so bad with oxidation. Did I sand to much ? What do you think ? I feel like I messed up

    • @mobiledetail4you
      @mobiledetail4you  3 роки тому

      Generally boats with metal flake have clearcoat on top of that. Sometimes that turns almost white because it’s so dull. Is that where you’re talking about? It is possible to wet sand to far the only way to know is to stop wet sanding and compound out your sanding marks with Compound and Rotary polisher. See if it goes from Dull to shiny and glossy if it does you’re good.
      If you’ve sanded so far that you’re actually in the flake then you may have gone too far.

    Wet sanding my boat seems a little intimidating for a novice. However, my boat, a 40 footer, is very old (1977) and I can only guess how long it’s been since the boat’s had anything like removing the oxidation done to it. Will it need wet sanding or should I just cut it with a heavy compound and see what that does.

    • @mobiledetail4you
      @mobiledetail4you  4 роки тому

      I like to test buff first always. Also if the thought of buffing that much hull is concerning. Before jumping in and sanding, test a 1x1 sq. With sanding, then compound so you understand how much work will be involved. Some color older sailboats age more gracefully... you may get lucky and only need a good compound then wax. Meguiars heavy oxidation remover for boat and RVs is a good very aggressive way to go... don’t sit on a spot to long after the working use of material is done...

      So everyone knows, I’m a professional detailer in Florida, it’s a proven fact a Wet Sand Job to remove oxidation removes less Gelcoat than Hard Core Sand Based compounds that grind the gel off
