Great videos. I appreciate when you do cover the tips that would be otherwise obvious to an experienced person, because skipping over the obvious is often the issue that makes a simple project more difficult. The way you are constantly teaching as you go about the project is very helpful. Keep up the great work!
6:37 definitely. Looking at investing in a 1980s trawler "handyman special" and all of the fiberglass, jell coat and repair videos are very useful and informative.
I have always thought it would be great to own a trawler! Glad you are enjoying the the videos, and hope they are helpful with whatever you end up working on!
Love learning from someone who enjoys what they do . Your years of experience show in your ability to do the work rapidly without waste of effort and all the while telling us everything we need to know . All we have to do is listen. Thanks for giving back what you have learned.
Good call on the mask. In future videos you might consider mentioning organic vapor cartridges for the paint and acetone. Many folks would not realize that there are mask cartridges specific to the airborne hazard; particulate cartridge for dusty work, organic vapor for paints and chemicals, etc. I'm planning to gel coat my canoe so I'm paying close attention. Thank you.
Hello, You asked for comments on content, so I love what you are doing and I am subscribed of course. There is almost nothing out there on chopper gun use. I purchased a small chopper only gun and am building it out to spray resin an catalyst separately. that is 3 streams. I build 1932 and 1934 Ford hot rods. They are small cars, but big enough that I am tired of hand layup. The small chopper system seems like the ticket. I am guessing that a lot of other people would be interested too. Sometimes you don't know that you need something until you see it in action. The first time I saw a CNC milling milling machine running, All I could say for 3 days was WOW !! Now I have 8 CNC machines. Great channel !!
I now have some silicone cups and stirring sticks. I also bought a silicone mat. It means once I've used a cup and a stick, I put them to one side and once the resin has cured it simply peels right off. Also for using putty and small amounts of resin for touching up, the mat has the same ease of cleaning. I don't have to buy and store numerous cups and sticks etc, there's very little waste, and tbh it means my workspace is neater and easier to manage.

Another benefit of switching to a pan is that it thins the pot depth and will slow down the kick. Old boat builder I know used to pour his epoxy and poly into a cookie sheet to thin the depth out.
Man I appreciate this. You’ve actually been on my channel a couple of times before and I didn’t even know then who you were. Lol I’m attempting a Gelcoat install to the inside of my CapeHorn 31T. Will see how it turns out
Hey Big Dan, glad you are enjoying the channel! I had one of my viewers tell me they saw me in our 29 at the icw on your channel, so I checked it out. Very cool! I have always liked the Cape Horn 31s and they are on my list of boats that I would like to own. Maybe you can reach out to me on the phone, and I will be able to help answer questions, if needed. I really get a kick out of your channel, by the way! Good stuff Man!
First time visitor here who is considering fixing up a cheap used boat where I live in Florida. I definitely like that color since I'm retired from the Navy! I forgot about those brush hairs; we clamped the metal bristle band with pliers before using them but there's probably a better hack by now. I think the coatings have come a long way since I painted the Boston Whaler I had 30 years ago.
Video suggestion… a video on how you seal and glass your PVC rigging tubes into your bulkheads and stringers. I noticed you have a unique way of doing it.
i refit my 40 footer (an Oyster SJ41 for those 80's boat enjoyer like me) with all the tips i learnt here, because i love the capacity of Gel coat. So useful to have the process, the tools, the conponents, an understandable english (i am not an English native) and the tricks in a same place. As in one of your video, you said we could bring our 2 cents : the best tools i discover to clean the gel coat excess (when filling my stress crack) is the Bahco Scraper (maybe there is other scraper, but this 650 mm Scraper worked perfectly for me), very smoothly used, it is just marvelous : i smoothly scrapped all the gel coat excess on my hull in one afternoon), thanks for the trick with the blue tape to mark all the tiny spot to be treated.
Uncle Joe, great video. This is what I needed to know to regelcoat my Blazer Bay. I loved their part where you said every man needs three boats. Amanda said we can’t hangs out now because of that!😂
Great video! I'm trying to figure out whether I should use gel coat or paint on an old box trailer that I inherited. It has the paint chipping off the entire surface. I just realized today, that it is fiberglass underneath which is showing through all over the place. Can I sand on that fiberglass? I'm just one woman on a mission to honor my Dad's trailer. Any tips that anyone has, I would much appreciate!
It's hard to say what is the best option for your trailer. There could be pros and cons to either material. Generally, I don't recommend trying to gelcoat over old paint as there could be compatability problems between the two materials. That would mean every bit of the old paint would have to be removed before attempting to gelcoat it. That would be quite a bit of work! I lean towards repainting vs. gelcoat just based on that alone. An option you might consider is a 2 part epoxy based paint, something that is much tougher than a one part paint, but easier than gelcoat on the prep and application side of things. I believe that Interlux or Petit paints make some marine grade paints that could work for you. I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best with your trailer project!
Greetings from Canada. Wanted to tell you how helpful this video was. I restore racing dinghies as a (serious) hobby but have never done a major gelcoat job before a current project which required the cockpit floor to be redone. Lots of experience with epoxy and with paint but other than the simple gelcoat repairs, this was a first. Just finished the floor and results were terrific (not to brag). In large measure due to your video showing me not so much what to do but rather what to expect. Thanks!
Wow, this is great. I previously re-gelcoated a 19 ft skiff. Your view on the final end goal and tips along the way were spot on. Keep this up! Very realistic and to the point, love it!
Thanks for the video. I have 0 knowledge about freshening up boats. I have a tiny 2 seater speed boat my late uncle gave me when I was a kid. It's called the rescue ranger because at 7 I would go out and toe broke down boats and jetskis with it. I'm going to dig in and get it back in the water this year or next. Thanks for explaining everything instead of just a time laps.
Thank you so much for these videos. I have a 1986 larson senza cuddy I am rebuilding the stringers/floor in. Also redoing the entire outside of the hull. These videos are worth thousands of dollars!!
I'm getting ready to change my 30 ft boat frome single inboard to twin outboard. I have to build up transom ,close up holes from prop shaft and rudder. Then install gas tank and redo deck. Thanks for all the information in your videos.
Very informative videos on your channel. As a Brit, I find it funny that you measure your resin/gel coat in imperial units and your catalyst in metric cc’s! 🤣
Glad you are enjoying the videos! I know it seems odd to the rest of the world. It's just how we do it over here. Kinda like us understanding beans on toast! 😄
Im fixing a mini dutch spitfire with a 5hp 2stroke motor for my son for this summer and your video's are going to help me allot. thankyou for your simpel straight forward no nonsens explaining of the work i need to put in and some of the costs it will be to fix it the right way. 👌👌👍👍🤙🤙
Capt Joe in my last comment was hoping to see videos working with expanding close cell foam and really love to see some fiberglassing CSM over fir plywood you know old school glassing Thank y'all so much for your sharing family legacy God bless moving forward!
I would love to see a segment on stringer repair and laminating procedure and process with both poly and epoxy. Details on how many layers of material and best way to overlap material
Thi is so helpful for a beginner diy small boat owner. I will probably do this to my newly bought boat. And i searched to intenet for esey and helpful explanation on how to. This clip does make sense and explains it in a nice way too a beginner like me.
Just subscribed, I am learning to repair small areas on my boat. Holes, chips and cracks in gelcoat. You are doing a great job with being very informative and explaining the work so it's not too intimidating . Keep up the great job. Scott (Skeeter)
Came across this just today. I have been wanting to get into glassing and gel coating and you make this look so easy. you are very easy to listen to and you explain this in terms that us padawans can understand. Thank you for this video and looking forward to more content. I did Sub to the site and did like the video.
Fish bump family Awesome video and this is a absolute YES indeed more videos are so helpful tips and experience into the fiberglass/gelcoat application Thanks for your time!
I just found the channel and subscribed. I have done work with fiberglass and different fillers in the past. I did not know however that you could repair/regelcoat fiberglass. I have just painted over my repairs or the whole vehicle/boat. I have learned a lot from the videos that I’ve watched already.
Hey fish bump! Love your work and it has really helped me getting through my first boat renovation, im in the stage of doing some gelcoat and and was wondering if it is possible to gelcoat over the old polyester hull? I have mailing some companies here in finland where i am at and theyre saying that putting polyester gelcoat over the old hull is a bad idea and that i should use a primer, what are your suggestions?
Thanks ! Glad you are enjoying the videos all the way from Finland! Yes, you can gelcoat over a polyester hull< it is just a lot of work if you want the gelcoat to be glossy. It would have to be applied to the hull, then wet sanded and polished to make it shine. Some might say that painting with a marine paint system would be easier. Thanks again for watching!
Hey Captain Joe, I just bought an '85 Bluewater Coastal Cruiser, she is beautiful! however her name was changed a couple years ago and on the stern and you can clearly see where the old name was removed from in the gelcoat. You can actually feel where the letters were. I would like to see a video of an efficient way to restore the stern so you can't see the previous lettering. My guess is wet sanding? You are doing a great job with your channel. I finally actually want to do fiberglass repair. I hope for you and your family that this Channel is working for you and your company. Great job! Tony
Congrats on your purchase! Yes, wet sanding with a rigid block and 600 grit, then 800 and 1200 to finish. Then compound and polish, followed by wax should do the trick. Best of luck!
Great vid. Ive got an old 26ft GRP sail boat. The topside is in bad shape which I have been sanding and filling. I'm struggling to decide whether to Gelcoat or just paint, the main recommendation has been to paint. From what I can ascertain gelcoat is more of a mould product, i.e. the surface comes out nice and shiny. Whereas if you roll it on, as you did it ends up with orange peel and needs much sanding and polishing. So painting seems the easy option, do you have a recommended approach? i.e. doing gelcoat adds a bit of strength and is likely to last for many years.....Thanks
It is a toss up between gelcoat and paint for a application like yours. They both have pros and cons. Sounds like you have already done some research on the subject. I will try to do a video on this topic soon for you all. Thanks for watching!
Love your channel super helpful about to start doing my own fiberglass and get coat attempts on my boat for the first time and definitely ending up on your channel more than anyone elses. going to start with spider cracks and work my way up to making a new bulkhead.
I'll be doing the same. I'm that guy that has to repair a fairly deep crack that I think is a impact crack. It's under the boat so I'll be doing a lot of over head work. I plan on using a dremel to grind the crack out to widen it and grind until I hit fiber glass or the crack is gone. I'm hoping the glass is okay so I can just use a polyester filler and gelcoat paste to repair. I was hoping to use gelcoat paste to refill the crack if I don't have to do any glass work. I just don't know if that's okay? It seems like it would be. All I'd be doing is using the same material gelcoat that I removed.
Just one suggestion, could you put up metric measurements and temps in the post edit. Most of the world tends to measure in units of 100 and not in hands and feet, horse shoes, acorns. 😂. I'm learning so much so thank you from Australia 🦘🦘🦘
great vid .. thanks .. once i open a can of pt. i like to punch a few holes in the valley-of-the-rim .. so that when putting the lid back on .. any pt. left in the rim will be forced back into the bucket .. and not squish/squirt out and away of the bucket ...
Great video on rolling gel coat!! When mixing silica with gel coat to repair dings, how deep can you use it? I have a few layup voids that are 1/8” to 1/4” deep I need to fill. Thank you for your videos, they are helping a lot with my refit!
Thanks! A 1/4 of an inch is probably as deep as I would typically go. Any deeper and some fiberglass or filler is probably a good idea. Hope this helps!
Wow. The amount of knowledge you crammed into that video is crazy! I got a 13' wagner powerskiff for free a few months ago (first boat). The 40hp engine was shot. I got a good deal on a 23' yamaha f50b scratch n dent. Now I've re-done lights, wiring, trailer as well re-done. Then I started replacing screws and circle hatch o-rings. Now I'm thinking the rail around the perimeter (rubber) needs replacing, and I have some cracks at the rail area. So here I am🤣 first video on paint. Great one! Looking forward to the ones I'm about to watch. Also, inside the circle hatch at the bow storage/anchor area, inside the hull, below deck, I looked in with a light and it looks like the fiberglass on the inside angle of the keel? Line? Front vertical center is peeling/delaminating. Is this worrisome? Boat is 2000 wagner powerboat. Which is a hobie powerskiff clone. Thanks for the wisdom 💪🙏
Sounds like a great project boat! I don't really like to see any fiberglass peeling or delaminating, but it usually isn't that big of a deal. I would use a grinder to remove the damaged or delaminated glass, then rebuild it with fresh fiberglass and resin. I have been really impressed with the vinyl Ester resin that I have been getting from fiberglass warehouse. They also have a discount code for fish bump tv viewers that should save you some money. I hope this helps and best wishes with your boat project!
Thanks for making the Video. You give very good information. Many tip and tricks to do a professional job. Your videos show you are a very experienced and professional person Thanks
How do you get the shiny look after you gel coat? Is there a clear coat gel coat that applies the same way? Thanks love the channel. I’m a new subscriber. I have a camper with gel coat that is dull and oxidized,. Not sure I can save the black color. Gonna try wet sanding and rubbing it out first.
To get gelcoat to shine, it either has to come out of a mold, or it has to be wet sanded and polished. It is a pretty labor intensive process. I would definitely try restoring your gelcoat first. We have a video detailing the gelcoat restoration process here on the channel. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
Just ran across your channel. You've got some good content for sure. Alot of people enjoy the learning aspect of it vs just lets say spray with chop and roll it out. Also some people are scared to do the fiberglass/gel coat just for the fact of not knowing. Its fairly simple just knowing the basics as your teaching. Keep on making the videos like this, there very informative.
Just subscribed. Picked up a 15ft hightide this week. Needs a good bit of love and care but I'd really like to restore her. Definitely digging the content. Happy I can roll on my gelcoat. Gonna do a full strip and restore on the gelcoat this winter. Has a '98 70hp yamaha 2 stroke. Gonna get it running this weekend. Keep the content rolling. I need all the guidance I can get. This is uncharted waters for me.
I've been watching your channel and I've learned so much. A few years ago I started on my own boat project and I think it came out fairly well for a newbie. Many older boats have a gelcoat webbing. There are not too many videos on how someone can do webbing on a boat. I think this would be a great little boat to do webbing on. Is there a chance you can make a video on webbing.
Thanks so much for watching! That's a great suggestion, but the owner wanted to go back with a solid Grey. We have done splatter finish many times before, I will video that next time we do one.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! The skiff is a Avalon 15 or 16 foot. They call it a tri hull or a cathedral hull. They were built around Pensacola Fla. I don't think they are still in business, but they built quite a few of them. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching and commenting!
New viewer here, looking for tips on how to do a small metal flake repair on my old ranger. Lots of good advice here, thanks for putting the video together
Really enjoying your videos! Lot of useful tips. I too would be really interested in seeing some more heigh end stuff. Sort of close to gel coat out of a mold finish. Keep up the good work!
Capt Joe Thanks for your reply! Would really like to see how glassing a wood transom properly sealing plywood as well as glassing techniques to get the best possible bond to the sides and bottom of the hull tabing in y'all know old school glassing techniques hopefully y'all have enough time for something like this appreciate y'all sharing family legacy!
Still watching your channel, I’m doing a total restoration on a 1979 / 21’ center console with a 20” transom. Planning on purchasing a used engine but having an issue finding good used engines with a 20” shaft. My question is what are your thoughts on raising the transom to accept a 25” shaft engine. Thank you God Bless and continue on with your journey it’s all good
Yes, a transom can be raised to accept a longer shaft motor, but it has to be done right! Obviously a lot of load is on the transom, and if the job is done incorrectly, bad things could happen! If it is a small boat, and small motor it would not be as critical. I approach that job with some caution. Hope this helps, thanks for Watching!
I have a 2005 whitewater boat cc 17ft .. .. it's need some fiberglass work .. and I need to re-gelcoat it .. i don't have a lot of experience with fiberglass .. your videos are great .. I'd like to know when wax gel coat is appropriate and when it isn't. ..
Great video thanks Joe. I didn't see you adding any wax to the undercoate gelcoat, but you were still able to get up in the boat to roll out the second coat. Was the undercoate very tacky whilst youo were moving around on it? Did it mark the undercoat at all?
💡Have you tried parchment paper over the resin? It keeps the air out so you don't need wax and then it peels off giving a smooth transition. Really good for small repairs. I have yet to find anything that sticks to parchment paper.
Great tip! I have mostly used wax paper in the past, but I imagine the results would be the same. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!
I know this has probably been answered but how would I go about regelcoating my boat, I live in magnolia springs Al and would love to get some lessons from you, it’s not a bad boat just minor spider cracks and a few holes I’ve got to touch up, but I’m wanting to change the color and fix everything and I don’t know where to start, (sanding etc)
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, basically the same process. The gelcoat applied with a roller or brush will have to be wet sanded and polished if you want it to be a glossy finish though. I hope to show that process soon in a video for everyone. Thanks for watching!
Hey captain Joe, I love your videos/work hopefully you can keep it up!!!! I haven’t yet started playing with fiberglass/gelcoat, still trying to gather information and watching videos over and over 😉 But I am a little confused about few things, First I have a 21 ft Macgregor, and not really sure what sort of fiberglass resin it is made out of, I am assuming it’s Epoxy? I need to repair a bit of gelcoat on the Hull and the top side (need to watch those videos a few more times and take some notes), and would like to modify the interior a bit with fiberglass and gelcoat. My question for right now is about tooling Polyester used over existing Epoxy? I’ve seen videos where people only use Epoxy? But the way I understand from your videos; is that they are not compatible together, and Epoxy is more for Bonding parts together. Can you put the tooling Polyester over the existing Epoxy finish? If I were to use that tooling poly Ester? Would that be sufficient? Ultimately I probably just need to get some supplies and start trying 😊 Thank you for your time and great videos That’s just the start of my crazy overthinking 😂
Almost all production boats are made out of polyester resin. Typically only high-performance and specialty lightweight boats are made of epoxy. But it is hard to know for sure. Polyester and epoxy can work together. It just needs to be in a certain sequence. It is generally considered OK to put epoxy over polyester, but not polyester over epoxy. Epoxy will bond to epoxy, so if in doubt, you can just use epoxy for your repair if you want. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching
Glad you are enjoying the videos! If you add wax to your gelcoat, and you don't wetsand or polish it you will have a flat finish. You might want to do a test panel to be sure this is what you ate looking for. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I am preparing to restore a 1950's fiberglass car body and find your fiberglass videos some of the best for restoration fiberglass. Although on boats. If you were going to paint over the gel coat would you skip the "wax"? What type of primer would you recommend? I'm thinking an epoxy.
Glad you are finding the videos to be helpful! Even if you want to paint over the gelcoat, we would still add wax to it. If you don't add wax, the surface will remain in a tacky condition. You would just sand the entire surface of the gelcoat very well after it has cured. Then you could do a solvent wipedown. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Last year was my first experience dealing with Fiberglass and gelcoat had to repair some Amateur repairs that were done on top side of my 23 foot Pearson sailboat, with somebody shop experience in my younger days I was pretty successful, fortunate enough to have a building big enough to put the boat in, thiswinter I did the deck repair core replacement in some spots not quite finished with it, but will be by the end of the month. My question is how much has the cost of polyester resin gone up over the last 10 years just curious and by the way, I have enjoyed most of your Fiberglass videos. Thanks.
Polyester resin has about tripled in price over the last decade in our area. Everything that we work with has gone up considerably over the last 3 or 4 years. Thanks for watching!
Very informative! thanks, how did you get rid of that orange peel finish? I know that boat will be a workboat, but what if we wanted the shiny smooth finish? thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! It would take a LOT of work to make the gelcoat shine on a skiff like that. Lots of boats in our area have rolled on gelcoat, it is a lot like bedliner material in a truck bed verses shiny paint. I will be making a video on this subject very soon for you guys. Thanks for watching

Awesome narrative - show and tell in a real shop environment. Lots of people can relate to your processes which are totally doable as a diy.
Thanks so much! Glad you are enjoying the videos!
You're one of the most informative channels on this by far. Thanks!
Wow! Thank you very much!
The channel is growing fast since it's excellent. Your comment shows great knowledge, and I congratulate your fantastic cameraman. Cheers.
Wow, Thank you so much!!

@@FishBumpTV Thank you.
Can a similar process be followed to fill spider cracking around decking and topside? Or is there a link to another video you can share? Thank you
Another benefit of switching to a pan is that it thins the pot depth and will slow down the kick. Old boat builder I know used to pour his epoxy and poly into a cookie sheet to thin the depth out.

First time sail boat buyer (fixer upper). Thank you for showing the basics and explaining steps to novice boaters.
Welcome to the channel! Glad to help!
Video suggestion… a video on how you seal and glass your PVC rigging tubes into your bulkheads and stringers. I noticed you have a unique way of doing it.
Working on that right now, so stay tuned!
Awesome because I’m right about at that point now in my boat build. I’ve used this channel to to get me this far in my first boat build!

Thanks!
That's fantastic! Glad your gelcoat project was a success. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Love the videos capt. Looking forward to to some higher end re gel coating. Would love to see how Togo from the waxed coat to shine
Thanks so much! I will try to get something along those lines out for you guys!
Very very informative and useful video. Thank you and give your camera man a raise. They’re on point!
Wow, thanks, will do!
Wow, this is great. I previously re-gelcoated a 19 ft skiff. Your view on the final end goal and tips along the way were spot on. Keep this up! Very realistic and to the point, love it!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment!
Perfect timing, just in the middle of re gelcoating my boat.
Awesome! Best of luck with your project!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and taking the time to share and comment! I wish you the best with your 2 seater restoration!
Thank you so much for these videos. I have a 1986 larson senza cuddy I am rebuilding the stringers/floor in. Also redoing the entire outside of the hull. These videos are worth thousands of dollars!!
Glad to help! I appreciate you watching all of the way from the UK 🇬🇧!
I'm getting ready to change my 30 ft boat frome single inboard to twin outboard. I have to build up transom ,close up holes from prop shaft and rudder. Then install gas tank and redo deck. Thanks for all the information in your videos.
You are very welcome! Best of luck with your project!
@@FishBumpTV 😂🤤
Im fixing a mini dutch spitfire with a 5hp 2stroke motor for my son for this summer and your video's are going to help me allot. thankyou for your simpel straight forward no nonsens explaining of the work i need to put in and some of the costs it will be to fix it the right way.
👌👌👍👍🤙🤙
Nice! Sounds like a great project! Thanks for watching and commenting
Great video, thank you. I just pulled a 8x20 skiff out of the woods, been sitting there for 10 years. You'll be hearing from me!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Capt Joe in my last comment was hoping to see videos working with expanding close cell foam and really love to see some fiberglassing CSM over fir plywood you know old school glassing Thank y'all so much for your sharing family legacy God bless moving forward!
Great suggestion! I will try to add that to the mix. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Correction every boater neads a houseboat, ski boat, surf boat and a sail boat with of course a dingy
Haha, I like it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Joe your channel is brilliant, I cant wait to get glassing roll on the spring.
Wow, Thank you so much! Best of luck with your projects!
You are giving great working info, for anybody that is planning to do any fiberglass work.
Keep the content coming brother your the man!
Yes Sir! More vids on the way!
Thank you for all of the tips, will be my first time re-gel coating a boat!
I would love to see a segment on stringer repair and laminating procedure and process with both poly and epoxy. Details on how many layers of material and best way to overlap material
Thanks for the suggestion!
Another video suggestion, what's the best way to repair spider cracks in gelcoat? My boat is full of them!
I will try to do a video on that soon for you guys. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thi is so helpful for a beginner diy small boat owner. I will probably do this to my newly bought boat. And i searched to intenet for esey and helpful explanation on how to. This clip does make sense and explains it in a nice way too a beginner like me.
Glad it was helpful!
Just subscribed, I am learning to repair small areas on my boat. Holes, chips and cracks in gelcoat. You are doing a great job with being very informative and explaining the work so it's not too intimidating . Keep up the great job. Scott (Skeeter)
Awesome, welcome to the channel!
Came across this just today. I have been wanting to get into glassing and gel coating and you make this look so easy. you are very easy to listen to and you explain this in terms that us padawans can understand. Thank you for this video and looking forward to more content. I did Sub to the site and did like the video.
Awesome! Welcome to the channel and thanks for subscribing!
Thanks Captain Joe. Love your teaching.
You are very welcome! I appreciate your comment!
Great video, I like the pace. To the point descriptions and explanations and don't show every detail dragging the video out for hours.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching
Thank you. I’ll be gel coating the under side of my center console in August. It has some scrapes along the V on the underside.
Glad the videos are helpful!
Last time I said I'd heard of gelcoat but didn't know much about it. Thanks to your posting I'm getting a handle on it. Thanks !!
Glad the videos are helping you with a better understanding of gelcoat! Thanks for watching
This channel is awesome .. will recommend it to my friends
Thank you, that is much appreciated!
Fish bump family Awesome video and this is a absolute YES indeed more videos are so helpful tips and experience into the fiberglass/gelcoat application Thanks for your time!
You got it! Thanks so much for watching!
Great stuff. Always follow the three P’s.
Thanks so much!
This is great. Thanks for making understandable videos. This is just what I was looking for.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I just found the channel and subscribed. I have done work with fiberglass and different fillers in the past. I did not know however that you could repair/regelcoat fiberglass. I have just painted over my repairs or the whole vehicle/boat. I have learned a lot from the videos that I’ve watched already.
Welcome to the channel, and thank you for subscribing!
Wow, thanks so much! Best of luck with your project!
We are working on that for you guys! Thanks for watching
Excellent videos capt! keep them coming...Thanks
Much thanks! Will do!
Much thanks! Will do!
great vid .. thanks .. once i open a can of pt. i like to punch a few holes in the valley-of-the-rim .. so that when putting the lid back on .. any pt. left in the rim will be forced back into the bucket .. and not squish/squirt out and away of the bucket ...
Thanks, great tip!
I regret selling this boat everyday! But I’m happy it’s getting the love it needed
It's a great little boat! You could always get another one and fix it up! Thanks for watching
Looks great as always capt.
Thanks Mr Tommy! I appreciate that!
You do a great job on info and videos on this, I will be watching all the videos thanks
Awesome, thank you!
Love to see a video on PROPERLY glossing an older wooden boat. You see plenty of guys doing it, well, not necessarily well.
Great suggestion!
Great video. I'm building knowledge to repair my shower surround. The wax additives was eye opening to me. I had to reasearch its purpose.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Trying to watch a lot on gel coating before I do a boat great video
Thanks, glad to help!
I appreciate that! Glad the videos are helpful!
Thanks, will do! I appreciate your thoughts!
Fantastic, welcome to the channel! I wish you the very best with your hightide project boat!
Excellent video. Awesome work. I will definitely follow your guidelines where I’m ready for this. Subscribed and closely watching.
Welcome aboard, and thanks for watching!
Great channel 💯. Building my knowledge base for the big winter refit
Great to hear! Thanks for the comment!
Thank you for all this information I will be doing my boat gelcoat
Glad to help, and best of luck!
Love it! Keep the how to do videos coming !!
Thank you! Will do!
If you were going to add the splatter after this would you need to remove the wax (sanding aid) first? How would you do that?
Great videos, very helpful, thank you from the west coast of Canada.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching all of the way from the west coast of Canada!
love the insight on gel coat Maintenance!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Love your approach.
Thanks so much!
I love this video. Thank you for this information. By any chance do you know the make and model of this boat you are working on?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! The skiff is a Avalon 15 or 16 foot. They call it a tri hull or a cathedral hull. They were built around Pensacola Fla. I don't think they are still in business, but they built quite a few of them. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching and commenting!
New viewer here, looking for tips on how to do a small metal flake repair on my old ranger. Lots of good advice here, thanks for putting the video together
Welcome to the channel! We don't really do much metal flake work but I will try to do some research on that for you guys. Thanks for watching!
Really enjoying your videos! Lot of useful tips. I too would be really interested in seeing some more heigh end stuff. Sort of close to gel coat out of a mold finish. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I appreciate the suggestion!
Is this essentially the same process you would use to repaint the hull of the skiff?
Thanks for this video. Enjoying watching along. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great suggestion! I will try to work on that for you guys.
Thank you
God Bless and continue on with your journey it’s all good
Yes, a transom can be raised to accept a longer shaft motor, but it has to be done right! Obviously a lot of load is on the transom, and if the job is done incorrectly, bad things could happen! If it is a small boat, and small motor it would not be as critical. I approach that job with some caution. Hope this helps, thanks for Watching!
Thanks from Australia love your show🌏
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching all of the way from Australia 🇦🇺!
I have a 2005 whitewater boat cc 17ft .. .. it's need some fiberglass work .. and I need to re-gelcoat it .. i don't have a lot of experience with fiberglass .. your videos are great .. I'd like to know when wax gel coat is appropriate and when it isn't. ..
Glad you are enjoying the videos! You typically add wax on the last coat of gelcoat, this is what helps it cure tack free. Thanks for watching!
Great video thanks Joe. I didn't see you adding any wax to the undercoate gelcoat, but you were still able to get up in the boat to roll out the second coat. Was the undercoate very tacky whilst youo were moving around on it? Did it mark the undercoat at all?
No wax in the first coat, a little tacky, but you can walk on it. With a roller finish it works out fine. Thanks for watching!
As always great job and great information
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
This was great! Do you follow the same process if you were painting the exterior of the hull?
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, basically the same process. The gelcoat applied with a roller or brush will have to be wet sanded and polished if you want it to be a glossy finish though. I hope to show that process soon in a video for everyone. Thanks for watching!
Hey captain Joe, I love your videos/work hopefully you can keep it up!!!!
I haven’t yet started playing with fiberglass/gelcoat, still trying to gather information and watching videos over and over 😉
But I am a little confused about few things,
First I have a 21 ft Macgregor, and not really sure what sort of fiberglass resin it is made out of, I am assuming it’s Epoxy?
I need to repair a bit of gelcoat on the Hull and the top side (need to watch those videos a few more times and take some notes), and would like to modify the interior a bit with fiberglass and gelcoat.
My question for right now is about tooling Polyester used over existing Epoxy?
I’ve seen videos where people only use Epoxy? But the way I understand from your videos; is that they are not compatible together, and Epoxy is more for Bonding parts together. Can you put the tooling Polyester over the existing Epoxy finish?
If I were to use that tooling poly Ester? Would that be sufficient?
Ultimately I probably just need to get some supplies and start trying 😊
Thank you for your time and great videos
That’s just the start of my crazy overthinking 😂
Almost all production boats are made out of polyester resin. Typically only high-performance and specialty lightweight boats are made of epoxy. But it is hard to know for sure. Polyester and epoxy can work together. It just needs to be in a certain sequence. It is generally considered OK to put epoxy over polyester, but not polyester over epoxy. Epoxy will bond to epoxy, so if in doubt, you can just use epoxy for your repair if you want. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching
Love all your videos. I have learned a lot. Question: How can I get a no shine finish with gel coat . I will like a flat black color. Thanks.
Great instructional video Joe!
Glad you liked it! I sure do appreciate the comment!
Great video man, trying to learn this stuff for my Parker 1801 very thorough and helps a bunch!
Thanks! I have always liked Parker boats. Best of luck with your project!
