The Muhle R89 has to be one of the finest DE razors made. Of the six razors I own, it and a Feather AS D2 are my favorites. Thanks, Geo, for helping men around the world to return such a pleasing and rewarding ritual that was almost forgotten. Shaving before with plastic, throw-away multi-blade razors was a chore but now, shaving is something more like meditation. Very calming and soothing.
The Mühle R89 was my first "nice" DE razor after starting out with the Wilkinson Classic plastic razor. It is very mild but after revisiting it after neglecting it for some time I just fell in love with it again.
I don’t have Merkur or Edwin. I had one Muhle and I shaved day per day in a ship which smells gas( bad atmosphere). I have very sensitive skin. Muhle never ever make me any irritation in my skin..I lost the base cup. I will buy a new one. In my opinion one of the best safety razors for daily shave. Geo you are legend, you saved my face😂❤. Greetings from Greece 🇬🇷
Went to a local store in Ludwigshafen, Germany yesterday with the determination to buy a Merkur 34c. I asked if I could have a look at the Merkur. After looking at the 34c, I asked for the Mühle R89, which would have been my second choice. What can I say, I went for the Mühle after all. It just felt better in my hands. Shaves really good!!
i shave my head and face every single day. i've been using cartridge razors for little over a decade now and i cant tell you how expensive and tedious it is.... just bought the merkur 34c, box of 100 personna de razors, praraso cream, lather bowl, badger brush, and some towels. CANNOT WAIT to begin this journey!
Is it too aggressive? I need something on the milder side. Also you can fly with these? I was told you couldn’t. Also what blades do you suggest? Sorry for all the questions I’m new to wet shaving and I want to start but I have no ideas which one to get.
I've used quite a few different razors over the past few years but I always go back to my 34C as my daily driver. All three of these are fantastic razors for people looking to get into wet shaving.
Also the *PARKER 87R* is an *exceptional* razor for beginners, it's super mild if you have sensitive skin and the butterfly doors make loading the blades a doddle, it's heavy and has great knurling on the handle, coupled with SHARK blades it really is a "gem" of a razor, and for what it costs it's definitely one to have in your collection.
R89 Grande was my first razor and my eternal love lol. It’s just awesome. I put it aside while I went thru and experimented with other new razors and when I came back to it, I realize just how amazing it is. I absolutely love it. Works perfectly with many types of blades and will last 5 lifetimes.
Geofatboy: A huge huge thank you. Thank you for putting this video out to give us some simple information on what razors you'd recommend to start out with Wet Shaving. The video took some stress out on what razor I'm going to get in the near future. Made my choice easier. I'd like to suggest that a complete update video be made on what products are available to use on wet shaving: what are beginner razor blades to start with, what are mild and aggressive razor blades, plus an idea of what costs are associated with blades. Shaving brushes, what is boar, badger and even synthetic brushes, differences and prices. And finally soaps, pucks, or sticks of shaving creams available plus what you'd recommend and their prices. There's so much (an overload of) information and products its very confusing to know what's what and its price association. For Someone like me, a video like this will help tremendously and eliminate confusion, stress when figuring out what to get when starting wet shaving. It may be a long video, but it would help out more than you know to myself and others.. The simpler the info and explanation of it would be of great great use. I hope this video can be done and hopefully it would bring some business to ShaveNation.Com! Thank You!👍👍😎😎
@@EasyTarget82 I think the DE89 will last a lifetime. But to be honest my first DE was going to be the HD 34C until I Geo's vid on the DE89. He said "wow" like 10 times something he never did prior to that. That was all it took!
After a few years experimenting with adjustables and then a couple years of a long-hair/stubble phase, I decided to get a haircut and become clean-shaven again. I went back to my beginner DE: the Oldcastle Butterfly Open. Flawless results.
Yeah, I can only find a couple pics of it on Google Images, and can't even find a website for Oldcastle Shaving Products. Anyway, yeah I used a Parker variant for a while, and it actually fell apart on me after a while. I then used a Viking Chieftain for a couple years, and it can also be buggy. My Oldcastle is just as reliable as ever, however.
My first razor was the DE89L. Owned for 6 years and finally dropped it and broke the threads on the head. Loved shaving with it. Already ordered the Merkur 34HD as a replacement. Looking forward to trying it out. Great video BTW. Thanks.
Started with a DE89 with the black rubber handle as I thought it would have more grip and the long handle would be easier to transition from a Mach 3 as opposed to the shorter 34C. Works great, love it. I did get the 34C recently and really like it as well. I may like the head even more. In any case, Astra Greens and these razors are amazing. The Gillette Heritage has the 89 head and it is a nice mix of both - shorter handle but DE89 head.
Note that the Merkur 34 also come as a 34G version, where G stands for Gold. Bling bling! Very nice. (I have both the 34C and 34G, awesome razors.) The Mühle and the Ed Jagger have very similar shave heads, right? And that shave head is also very similar to the Gillette Heritage razor as I understand.
I bought a Muhle R41as my first razor... It was such a bad decision (the most aggresive one on the planet). But my wife bought me today a R89, it was such a nice gift 😁 Thank you very much for this video, so other guys will start with a mild to medium razor.
I mean, they are the recommended beginner razors but ai believe that if you are careful you can do it with any. I started with a muhle r41 and absolutely love it. No regrets.
It would seem suggesting an adjustable razor (like the Rockwell 6C, Parker Variant or Merkur Progress) might be a better long-term option, since they'll better adapt to one's skill, skin sensitivity and beard growth.
Rockwell razors are overrated and unnecessarily expensive. The 6S isn't aggressive at all. I really don't get why everyone keeps making a fuss about it. I have the type of beard where I MUST use a brand new razor blade every time, and found the level 6 head to be really decent, but not enough to sway me to keep it at $100

Or you could get a Merkur Futur and 'jailbreak' it to shave at '12'. Or look into an **adjustable** Single Edge razor, which use thicker Feather Artist Club (or Kai or Schick) single edge blades that last longer. One of these SE razors is a favorite, given the overall efficiency and smoothness, but in some areas it can't quite match the somewhat harsh iKon Tech. If none of those do the trick, one of the most aggressive options would be one of the Feather DX style razors (folding or kamisori) using a Feather Professional Super blade (which has extra depth), which promises facial damage in untrained hands. One day I might start out with the safer Feather SS kamisori razor (which has 'training wheels' near the blade edge).
@@borbetomagus Hi! I see you recommend a razor head from Yaqi too. I was wondering if you have tried their Double open comb razor head. What are your thoughts?
@@shayanali8771 I assume you're referring to the Yaqi 'Mellon' head (SRH011), which was probably inspired by the 'Grand Shave King Self Lubricating Razor' invented by Joseph M Mellon around 1945, that later inspired the Phoenix Accoutrements 'DOC' (Double Open Comb) razor. I have the 'DOC' and it is a mild razor, but (from what I remember) was not as efficient as I like. Given the price of Yaqi razor heads, you could try numerous options. I'm pretty certain their 'Beast' head uses their 'Mellon' top cap along with their DE89-like base plate (SRH012?) that (ironically, given both mild razors) produces quite an aggressive razor head.
When I saw searching for a safety razor Edwin Jagger rang a bell and I couldn't figure out why. A few days later realised; I park outside the factory every Sunday before I walk up the hill to worship.
Thank you Geo for getting me into DE shaving! You have opened my eyes and I'll never go back to "the other way". I'm still training my ninja moves on the 34C as per your recommendation and strive to become a DE samurai like yourself in time.
The 34c always causes me irritation on my neck. So did the Parker Variant even on setting 1. Only the r89 does not cause me any irritation. Yes it is the mildest razor I’ve used, but that might be a good thing for some. It’s perfect for everyday or every other day shaving. For more than a few days growth, I like to do the first pass with a more aggressive razor then switch to the r89.
I’m a true beginner, who has never shaven myself in 47 years. I’ve always went to barbershop for a haircut and shave. With this pandemic I had to learn. I chose the Rockwell 6C because I also had to shave my head bald. It took me weeks of UA-cam videos to decide on a safety razor over cartridge razors . But glad I went with a safety razor.
What are your thoughts now, after a year? I'm considering shaving my own head for the first time. Why did you choose that razor, and would you do anything differently?
@@_Hound_ this still the only razor that I have used to shave with. I choose this razor because it offers you different height adjustments based on your length of hair you are shaving. Which allows me to go longer shaving and not rinsing out razor. I’ve only used the Rockwell razors that came with razor it self so have no others to compare it to. But get a very very close shave
Great video, really informative, I really appreciate that you spoke about the durability of the different razors. My old butterfly razor lost it's screw when I dropped it, and I've been looking for a replacement that's more durable.
The only 3 i own, are a Gilette King C, a Bluebeard Cutlass and now an R41. All 3 have their own benefits imho, although i think the Cutlass has now been made redundant by the R41. Also the King C is good for me for a quick whip round with only a day's growth
I still love my starter razor the Rockwell R-1. With the TTO barn doors they couldn’t havevidiot proofed it any more than they did (Something I desperately needed)
I have never used a safety razor, but after watching your videos will buy one. My question is why not start with an advance/professional razor, is it that difficult to use? (I don't want to keep buying different ones, the main point is to safe money)
I started with an Edwin Jagger DE89 because I heard “ it’s a great beginner razor”. But it was far too mild for me. I saved some coin and bought an Edwin Jagger 3ONE6. It’s not even an “aggressive” razor but it’s far more EFFICIENT. I also like my RazoRock Mamba 70 for times when I shave more often or want a close AND mild shave.
Everyone will ask himself "If a company just sells a razor and it last for a lifetime, how do they make profit by selling items of 30-40$ per customer". It is addictive, no one buys just one razor. Keep going Geo!
Very nice choices there, Geo. My first safety razor was the EJ DE89. My razor collection addiction was started there. ;) So many great razors, so little time! Thanks for sharing the video.
I just want to thank you buddy. I bought the "Parker 22R" a couple of weeks ago (on the 2nd of April) and received it yesterday. EDIT: I gotta say; it was also very quick to arrive, considering there's the pandemic and I live abroad. I shaved my first time with the safety razor today and MY GOD what a difference. It just felt really natural... I didn't need to fight with the razor and yank it back and forth just for a single hair that wouldn't come out. Just a couple of strokes and GONE! I did cut my chin a little bit, but I had a pimple growing, so bear with me :P Oh and if you're like me and you have VERY sensitive skin, I can say I wasn't red at all after shaving. I'd usually be all red after shaving... Again.... thanks a LOT! PS - Anyone who's thinking of getting one of these bad boys... I got the "365 Day Kit: Parker 22R Safety Razor Set". I highly recommend it!
Kinda surprised that Rockwell 6c didn't make the top 3 since it's adjustable and thus likely to suit ya. My first was a King C Gillette razor but the Rockwell are like on a whole new level in my opinion
I have the futur and it's a regretful buy. It won't let you get close under the nose as it's just too big. Price wise, the 3 he recommended are more than enough
1. What is the difference with the merker, feather and mule razors blades that are shipped with the products? 2. What do you mean by "mild to medium" shaving? 3. How often on an average should the blades be replaced?
Greetings from Greece, nice videos 👏. I am a beginner in classic saving. I just ordered the Rockwell 2c instead of the qshave. Is that a good choice-razor? It seems from videos very solid and nice build.
I think the rockwell 6c is better. It costs $ 1 more than Merkur. But rockwell is more variable in settings. Using Rockwell you get a better chance that the razor will fit your skin.
That's a funny weight spec on the Muhle. I have the R 89 TWIST (2 instead of 3 parts, twisting cap at the botton) and it weighs exactly 89 grams, 50% heavier than your spec here.
Nice video Geo. Nice razors suggestion. I prefer for begginers adjustable razors. What about exprience shavers buddy? You have to make an video for top 5 five razors suggestion for exprienced shavers.
The iKon Tech (Tek) would probably be at the top of the heap, though the Yaqi 'Knight Helmet' (SRH039), 'Beast' (SRH013) and open comb slant razor heads (SRH030) -- which Shave Nation currently doesn't stock -- come close. /watch?v=exXSX_UiZPc
Question. I was going to buy the Merker 34C for my first safety razor, but as I am 6'4" with reasonably large hands, would this Merker 34C be too small? Or does this not matter as I see most men balance the razor without using the last two fingers. Geofatboy said that he wouldn't mind the handle being a little bit longer. Clueless at this moment.
Nice video however in terms of 'Beginners' razor, I am surprised more don't promote the Rockwell 6c or 6s, being adaptable and ridiculously easy to use without incident.
Quick question, the Merkur 34c HD is apparently the same as the 38c but the 38c is longer. Would the 38c also be a recommendation alongside the 34c if the handle is too short for a beginner?
You're basically only showing 2 razors though. Muhle makes the head for the Edwin Jagger so they shave identically. You'd have to switch to an open comb with either company to find something that really shaves differently.
Hi geofatboy, how are u? Hope you ok. Im suffering with psoriasis vulgaris for 21 years. So; i had wet shaving in 2 years. My question is; what is your favorite balm and what do you recommend for me? Hope that u respond it. Hopefully have a great year for all of us ( without corona )
For curiosity, it would be interesting to hear you, Geo, with your experience, expertise and discriminating knowledge, sum up the differences, if any, in shaving experience between these 3 razors. I have 2 of them, but the 34C, really, takes care of all my needs in a standard safety razor. Best wishes, Geo. Thanks.
I am a woman with severe PCOS symptoms, trying to convert from electric to these safety razors for comfort. I found an 8 dollar "Van der Hagen" handle at the grocery store-- and unlike literally every video I have seen about this topic, the blade in that thing pulled and tugged immediately and I couldn't even get past an inch with it. Was it the blade and I just need to try different kinds, a shaving cream that isn't shower gel, or is the cheap handle itself just terrible? I really want this to work.
Hi Geo, I want to convert my girlfriend to the church of the safety razor. I gave here my Mühle R89 but she isn't very happy with it. Can you recommend a DE razor for the girls? Greetings from Germany Heiko
Hi Geofatby! I was wondering if you could also make a video on the best double edge blades ranging from smooth to very sharp. I have sensitive skin and even with these great razors you mentioned, I still get razor burns. My technique is alright and the best blades for me was Gillette 7'O clock Stainless. But I still would like to prefer a smooth blade. What will be your recommendations?
I’d say a Gillette Tech or SuperSpeed “Flare Tip” would both be excellent choices for a Beginner. Also can’t go wrong with a Gillette FatBoy-Slim or a Parker Variant 💈😁👍💈 And of corse the 34C & DE89
Not easy to get gillette vintage razors not an good idea. I think adjustable razors can be better choice like Merkur progress, Parker variant, Futur etc. Begginers need to start from lowest settings.
Paul Schneider Yes, the Gillettes are out of production, but the tech, super speed are very avaiulable on Ebay and in excellent shape for good price. I have the 3 GEO recommends and they are good; but I would rate the Gillettes better; and I use them more. Paid $18 for unused tech and 30 for a mint superspeed and they are great. Also use the Fatboy adjustable and slim adjustable. If i want to shave and not think or for that matter be very careful, i use the tech and a gentle blade like the Astra or the Gillette Wilkinson Sword and I get a great smooth shave, no irritaion and no cuts. there is reason the US gave millions of troops this razor for WWII and why the 1917 open comb (just look at geometry similarity less the comb) was what the WWI troops shaved with. There is replica tech that is made for about 10 bucks that is as good a copy as you can get.
Trust me, look no further than the Parker 87R, it's based on the Gillette Aristocrat 66. If your new to DE shaving give this one a go with Shark super stainless blades, it gives one of the mildest, smoothest shaves ever. You won't regret it.
How about a selection of razors not for beginners, but a definitive lifetime pick for practical users. based on the little experience I have I'd choose the 34c, the DE89BL and the Fatip. I havent tried the R41, but I probably will since I always find myself using the Fatip in the angle where I can feel the bare blade.

Solid choices Geo! Can’t go wrong with any of those razors:)
I use the Merkur 34C and I love it.
Just got the Merker 38C and I love it thanks Geo
Hi Geo- Solid choices, all-around! I started with the 34HD, as well! Take good care and best regards, as always!
Everyone will ask himself "If a company just sells a razor and it last for a lifetime, how do they make profit by selling items of 30-40$ per customer". It is addictive, no one buys just one razor. Keep going Geo!
Thank you for your support!
I love my EJD89
Very nice choices there, Geo.
My first safety razor was the EJ DE89. My razor collection addiction was started there. ;)
So many great razors, so little time! Thanks for sharing the video.
Great video, love your content and your shaving supplies I buy from you all the time
I just want to thank you buddy.
I did cut my chin a little bit, but I had a pimple growing, so bear with me :P
Oh and if you're like me and you have VERY sensitive skin, I can say I wasn't red at all after shaving. I'd usually be all red after shaving...
Again.... thanks a LOT!
PS - Anyone who's thinking of getting one of these bad boys... I got the "365 Day Kit: Parker 22R Safety Razor Set". I highly recommend it!
Eza sarlak Shi ba3den bte3tal ham de8re bta3ref I trust myself I love myself. Compulsions won't change anything
Really hope Merkur will recontinue HD11C razor.
Me too!
Great trio man. I started with Wilkinson sword and it does the job. I think i'll take the Muehle as well.
I started with a Merkur 33 and if I were to choose again I'd get the 34c. The 33's nice but the simpler the better and 2-piece beats 3 in my book.
Kinda surprised that Rockwell 6c didn't make the top 3 since it's adjustable and thus likely to suit ya.
My first was a King C Gillette razor but the Rockwell are like on a whole new level in my opinion
HD 34C!
I recommend the Merkur Futur adjustable: start out at 1 and work your way up to 3 or even 6. There's no other razor that gives you a closer shave.
2. How harsh the shave is.
My first safety razor was a Park 22R and I still use it once in a while to this day, works awesome another option, I think, for a starting razor :D
I was thinking of getting it as it looks awesome in gunmetal and I want another razor besides my VDH.
Greetz from Poland!
What about king c Gillette? It's pretty cheap and made well, some say that r89 head.
Another great video, thank you for the content. Keep up the good work
Greetings from Greece, nice videos 👏. I am a beginner in classic saving. I just ordered the Rockwell 2c instead of the qshave. Is that a good choice-razor? It seems from videos very solid and nice build.
Greetings! best from the USA. 2C is a good choice!
Great shave Geo!
Great Razors , specially 34C !
Sorry I went with the ol Rockwell 6s I hate butterfly razors
I think the rockwell 6c is better. It costs $ 1 more than Merkur. But rockwell is more variable in settings. Using Rockwell you get a better chance that the razor will fit your skin.
Im diggin the luminox watch geo, cool as all hell.
The 34c HD is not a beginners razor and its not mild either.. its medium and its too short and too heavy when you come straight from carts - IMO
Sure
The Fatip Testina Gentile is also a good option as a starter razor
Id actually like to try a 3ONE6 someday. Nice watch btw. ⌚️👍🏼

Geo. The 38c is the long handle version of the 34c.
I've had psoriasis for 30 years and use Nivea men sensitive post shave balm.I've had no problems with it hope this helps.
My first razor was $3 DE Rapira, I knicked every square cantimeter of my face, then immediately switched to cartridge razors for next 20 years
Time to revisit I guess. That being said-it's not for everybody...
Thanks.
You are a good guy, Geo......I enjoy doing business with you....

Got the 23c, a day later I got the 34c and never looked back....and never will.
Thank you for the reviews!! What about 3 best adjustable razors? Non vitage :-)
Hi Geo,
I want to convert my girlfriend to the church of the safety razor.
I gave here my Mühle R89 but she isn't very happy with it. Can you recommend a DE razor for the girls?
Greetings from Germany
Heiko
Can you please do MAHOGANY WOOD 4 EDGE SAFETY RAZOR vs 98R SAFETY RAZOR?
What's that and where can I see it?
Mühle R89 Twist for me
Hi Geofatby!
Try BIC blades, smooth and sharp blades made in Greece and my personal choice. Astra Platinum are popular blades made in Russia.
I’d say a Gillette Tech or SuperSpeed “Flare Tip” would both be excellent choices for a Beginner. Also can’t go wrong with a Gillette FatBoy-Slim or a Parker Variant
💈😁👍💈
And of corse the 34C & DE89
Not easy to get gillette vintage razors not an good idea. I think adjustable razors can be better choice like Merkur progress, Parker variant, Futur etc. Begginers need to start from lowest settings.
Paul Schneider
Yes, the Gillettes are out of production, but the tech, super speed are very avaiulable on Ebay and in excellent shape for good price.
Nice Luminox man! Check out the Citizen Skyhawk.
king c is cheaper and very good quality, 2 year tested not a single problem with the chrome
Hey Geo.....I'm waiting on my delivery from you, then I will go to the UPS Store and get your Rockwell base mailed off to you, Okey doke ??
Can you also recommend top 3 razor blades too please Geo
How about a selection of razors not for beginners, but a definitive lifetime pick for practical users. based on the little experience I have I'd choose the 34c, the DE89BL and the Fatip. I havent tried the R41, but I probably will since I always find myself using the Fatip in the angle where I can feel the bare blade.
It is not that those razors cannot be used by experienced shavers they just happen to be easy for inexperienced users.
Man I bought a Muller R89 twist last week thought I do my first razor shave ever
I used the proraso cream first then proraso soap cut myself in about five places I have a massive rash around the mouth doing something wrong……
Prep, Sharp Blade, Angle, and it can take a while for your face to become accustomed to any new method of shaving.
@@geofatboy thanks all the best from Melbourne Australia - great videos keep it up mate…!!
@@geofatboy Thanks mate guess what I just had another go but I switched to a Wilkinson sword blade in the R89 twist followed your video perfectly finished off riding the cap
Zero cuts perfect result….!!!!
