I'm glad you were able to make it out to Brooklyn and Queens. If you're Irish and want to be around proper Irish pubs and generational New Yorkers, you can't beat Sunnyside/Woodside in Queens where the pubs get down to county specific decorations and patrons. If you want to be around a lot of transplants and hipsters with solid bars/clubs and a few decent Irish pubs, then any of the gentrified parts of Brooklyn would be the spot, although you'll be spending just as much on a hotel in BK as you would be in Manhattan.
it is a NYC law. that glasses are not only cleaned but also sanitized. a germ doesn't have a chance! I got pint glasses in Dublin that still had women's lipstick on them.
Welcome to Brooklyn Guru! I grew up in Bensonhurst, south Brooklyn. Love your videos and will check out all of the best pints in Ireland my next trip there!
Is the 'twang' taste in USA maybe because of different glass cleaning methods compared to Ireland/UK? I always imagine everything American = more chemicals when compared to Europe! Maybe try: cleaned (US method) used glass vs new(/used (washed with Irish method)) glass to see if it tastes different!
Interested in checking out Hartley's for sure. A couple Brooklyn spots I like for guinness - The Wicked Monk in Bay Ridge (also good food), Brooklyn Public House, & another spot I came across recently was Smith's Tavern
There is an ideal temperature for guiness it's like 57degrees which is like irelands annual temperature But Americans like their beers colder . And to slide with the daily temp.
I'm often wrong, but I thought that the guinness in the USA was brewed in and exported from Ireland, whereas in all/most other countries it is brewed domestically and a "Guiness flavour extract", produced at St James Gate, is added. Maybe they brew a different formulation for export to USA (with the twang).... Here in New Zealand the Guinness in pubs from the keg is brewed domestically and doesn't seem to have the twang, while the widget cans which are imported from Ireland do have the twang.
@@SilverSamurai12 As a Canadian I can't sleight either place... but there is no comparing the Irish bar scene in Toronto to that of Vancouver. Funny you went to Iona. I think the day I saw and commented on part 1 (Saturday the 19th?) I mentioned hoping that you'd come to Brooklyn. That night I went to the theater down the street and was going to stop into Iona to kill a half hour. It was 6:30pm and the place was too packed to enjoy myself, so I went straight to the cinema. That night we went to a bar called The West, then left and stumbled across an Irish bar, The Clonard, just a few doors down from the place we were planning to go. Wound up crashing what appeared to be an Irish wedding, but I think was just some girl's birthday. Lots of dresses and bowties. They were going to the bathroom in pairs and threes apparently doing lots of cocaine. For awhile I think we were the only Americans in the place.

Interesting that you say it’s too cold. I’ve never experienced a beer in my life that was “too cold”. Except when I accidentally froze a beer and it turned into a slushy.
I’ve enjoyed yr whirlwind tour of NY n prices are mental for a sesh. Anyway, not sure why Iona are serving the black stuff n a Belhaven glass but they are yr Celtic cousins..👍

the twang could be from Guinness being brewed in America and possibly different laws and regulations do impact even slight variations in ingredients or temps

Belhaven?Scottish brewery.Strange seeing that on the side of a pint of Guinness.

Now that you've ticked LA & NYC off the list the next 5 North American trips for a pint should be Toronto, Chicago, Boston, Montreal & Newfoundland.
While not east coast, Vancouver and Victoria also serve good pints.

I think the M means 2000 like millennium. Isn't M the Roman numeral for 2000? I'm probably way off but that's the first thought that comes to mind
One thousand
Hartley's reminds me of a bar in Liverpool called Hobo Kiosk
I've been to NY two years ago and like you have food out the pint is quite regularly and good in irish pubs . I was surprised 👍👍

Wonder why they had a belhaven glass (Scottish brewery) for their Guinness ahaha
With prices like that, do u have to tip?
Yes, tipping in the United States is expected in bars and restaurants.
Iona is one o f the best!
Interesting that you say it’s too cold. I’ve never experienced a beer in my life that was “too cold”. Except when I accidentally froze a beer and it turned into a slushy.
In England they usually pour from an "extra cold" tap which isn't a thing in Ireland. Might be the same in America.
Guinness I'd supposed to be served at 42.8° f, unlike every other beer
Also,she's Irish 😊
A pity you weren't able to say Hartleys was the best pint you had on your trip (which it seemed to be) because of the guy you were with.
He said literally that
Hope you called into McDowell's for a burger

Maybe the twang is the fda glass cleaning chemical they make them use in the US 🤔
