This is an old Patreon video that has been in the 'vault' for a while because of the audio issue guys fyi. We apologize for the inconvenience.
No worries. That’s one of their better compositions. Nice intro and groove, as always.🤘😎
I like being able to hear your asides and commentary during the song, so it's not much of an issue.
this is the top five greatest metal songs ever don't apologize it's here thanks
It's all good. I wish I could go back and experience these songs with fresh ears such as you guys. I miss that. So I enjoy these vicariously thru the two of you. Thanks again guys
Hi Ryan and George, review suggestion: Robert Palmer, the song trilogy of Sailin' Shoes, Hey Hey Julia, and Sneaking Sally. Palmer on vocals with The Meters, Alan Toussaint and Lowell George (Little Feat).
If you guys listened to the first song on this album, Knocking At Your Back Door, you'd hear plenty of guitar "flair" and probably get a big kick out of the lyrics. I'm more surprised that you didn't comment on the lethal organ sound in the intro. There's no one before or since that does what Jon Lord did. RIP.
I wanna like This comment more than once!
yes there is. ken hensley in uriah heep kills the hammond organ
Deep Purple - Pictures of home, thats is my fav :)
You guys should check out 'Mouthful Of Cavities' by Blind Melon. That dual vocal is the best!
Lol. You all talking Child In Time; 1970. As others have told you between then and Perfect Strangers album, they had done other things (White Snake, Rainbow, to name two) and came back. So, yeah. They would do something without frills, in your eyes, to get the feeling back again. This was an EXCELLENT album at the time; Ian had done Born Again with Black Sabbath, which was a weird album at the time for Sabbath.
ALSO, people not around then forgets that this came out during the "New Wave" time. Alot of 70's bands were changing their style a bit (Like some did in the late 70's competing with disco), but Deep Purple stayed their ground.
You should review Burn by Deep Purple.
Greatest comeback album of all time
Next do Knocking At Your Backdoor.
Sometimes less is more... and 'Perfect strangers' at Deep Purple concerts just makes perfect sense. Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) already did his virtuoso playing in the 70's... so this was more him getting his groove on w/ (the late) keyboardist Jon Lord. A classic 🤘🤘🔥🔥
Exactly. This song is not at all about virtuoso playing; rather, it is all about the long, slow groove and the spaces in-between the notes.
The sound of the song was definitely unique in 1984.
Maybe unique for 1984 But So much Like Zeppelin's KASHMIR of 1975!!
@@michaeldrennan9932 And how many songs reminded you of Kashmir in 1984? How many do, even today?
But yes, the resonances with Kashmir were one of the reasons I liked this song so much, and still do.
Yeah it wasnt pop.
@@michaeldrennan9932 to you... U should know that it is "so much Like" cause it is just psicodelic style. And nothing more common. Moreover, DP are the artists in music and great musicians
It's a great riff and groove. No need to make it more busy imo.
One of the things I appreciate in Blackmore is that he understood when to keep it simple and when to fully rock out. A lot of great guitarists just play too much.
I agree... Also, we need to take into account the time when this came out... It was very fresh, but since then hundreds of bands copied this and no wonder it may seem too used up nowadays.
Agreed! Blackmore does what the song needs. I mean, I truly always wanted a guitar solo in this song. Maybe in a semi-oriental style that he is so good at? So I miss that in the song but in the song with the riff and the groove, busying it up would ruin the song. When Steve Morse plays this song he often overused the harmonics to the point where you just wanna skip the song. Blackmore is more tasteful in that way.
I thought this had a middle eastern sound to it, and it doesn’t always have to be busier, they had enough songs that were like that
@@hectorchavez3405
Yeah, kind if like a Deep Purple take on Kashmir.
Jon Lord's organ at the beginning of this track is everything. The rest of the song could be rubbish but that part makes it for me. And yes, Dream Theater's version of this track is absolutely banging.
A simple rhythm like this puts you in a trance!
This was Deep Purple's reunion comeback album. The lyrics are from what I understand are about their estrangement from one another. Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple and formed Rainbow. Bassist Roger Glover joined Rainbow a little later. Drummer Ian Paice and keyboardist Jon Lord played in Whitesnake and singer Ian Gillan joined Black Sabbath. Then they reunited and recorded this album.
Blackmore was the guitarist on this album what are you talking about?
@@89gt5.0
Re-read what I wrote. They broke up and reunited on this album.
I think Ryan wants Blackmore to be someone else LOL. This is his style, long lingering thick chords, heavy repetition in the riffs. It was roots of heavy metal and they’re a band that stayed close to their roots. George was right, it really was about “let it breathe”. It’s a style growing up in the 70s you enjoyed because it slowed things down and took your mind away. I always loved it.
"Knocking at your back door" from this album should be next💯
Yep, that song is even better
Yes prefer that song. Saw them in concert multiple times mid 80’s.
"Perfect Strangers" (the album) is "Machine Head" for a new generation. Any rock fan worth their salt NEEDS this album in their catalog. It's cover to cover brilliance, and tracks like "Under The Gun," "Gypsy's Kiss," and "Knocking At Your Back Door" more than adequately showcases this lineup's strengths together.
"Not responsible" is one of my favourite deep tracks from any artist ever
Ian Paice is the most underrated drummer in rock.
Agreed. He was just as slick as his peers, but also so precise.
Ian Paice is straight up awesome man.
That award goes to Brian Downey all day long.
He is legend!
And the best
Check out the album "Machinehead" guys. The song Highway Star, or Lazy. Nice riffs and solos, every musician in the band is on display. You'll enjoy them, or anything on that album. "Fireball" is another solid album.
Also, the classic "Space Trucking" which closed "Machine Head" and live shows. "Fireball" is excellent; the title track is considered the true precursor of thrash/speed metal.
That is a great Deep Purple song. It's tricky in its simplicity. The fills on guitar Ritchie is playing on purpose low in the mix so you more notice the rhythm guitar track. But if you listen close it's insane. On the surface level it makes the song sound really dense and thick, and once you realize all the guitar and keyboard fills purposely placed low in the mix to not detract from the groove.
Some songs never grow old & this is one of them. Been a personal favorite since it was released. Summer night slow cruise, car windows down and this on. Sometimes less is more.
Hell yes, cruising on summer nights !
Hell yes, cruising on summer nights !
this album came out in 1984 and did amazing I was 13 years old and we listened to it all the time it was like hearing the 70s with an amazing production and it did really well sales wise in a year that the following albums where also released
1984-Van Halen, Ride The Lightning-Metallica, Powerslaves-Iron Maiden, The last In line-Dio, Love At First Sting-Scorpions, Tooth and Nail-Dokken, Out of the Cellar-Ratt also Twisted Sisters-Stay Hunger and many more great albums in that year Queensryche, Anthrax, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Voivod, Slayer, and many many more what a year for metal music and some guys who had been around since the 60s reform and make this amazing album
Great song and great album. You guys should do more deep purple. You guys would enjoy burn by deep purple.
We were fools, we called her a liar...
I love this song, but I think "Knocking at your Backdoor" was the better cut from this album.
You guys should check out Ted the Mechanic - Deep Purple with Ian Gillan but a new guitarist.. Purple in the 90s and such a cool, grooving guitar!
It is a really well done song. The problem with a lot of songs in the 1980s, especially from about 84 on is that they were over produced. This song is a good example of tasteful production.
One of the greatest bands to ever exist.
Perfect Strangers isn't about flair and Blackmore showing off. It's a slow moving train that you cannot stop. It's about the percussion, simple as it is.
As a bass player, it's what we call a pocket song. Loved playing this.
You guys are becoming music masters, less can be more sometimes, surprised to hear this was 80s as well,it sounds more early 70s but it's still very pleasant on the ear🤙
1 vote for the 80´s marathon! Please!
Can’t go wrong with Space Truckin’ or Highway Star.
Wait…how could I forget Burn. That’s the ticket right there!
Hard lovin man, fireball, rat bat blue, flight of the rat, stormbringer…. and that is just to name a few
Cool title for a song. Not just "perfect" in the sense that you've absolutely never met them before, but perfect in the sense that you get along so well that you feel like you've known them forever.
This song is a groove, but as a fan of Blackmore's guitar skills, i understand the frustration of not having more guitar licks or solos
You guys should do Highway Star and Knocking at Your Back Door
One of my favorites from Deep Purple.. That bridge is fantastic..
You guys probably need to hear Highway Star
Many others copied the style and certain parts of this song after the fact, but this was so fresh when first released. The intention of the music was to give the sense of almost hypnotic rhythm and a Kashmir feel of a certain place and time, like driving across an endless desert. While it is repetitive and stays somewhat simple and basic it was intentional to establish and maintain a specific mood. The foundation is basic to allow you to clearly hear and pickup on the more subtle changes over the top with the keys and the vocals. I agree that songs are open to the interpretation of the listener even if the artist had their own inspiration and intent when writing it. Most artists will state the same when asked about the meaning of song lyrics. That is the beauty of artistic expression. All that said, I personally think George nailed the meaning of this one. To add, this was a reunion for the band and there was a strong sense of nostalgia for the guys, as old friends/bandmates getting back together. They knew each other well, but yet felt oddly like strangers in some aspects, perfect strangers.
PLEASE do an 80s marathon
Deep Purple. Perfect Strangers Tour. 1985 Texxas Jam. 82K strong. Still my #1 concert.
It's very "Kashmir"- ish. I don't care, I still love it. I saw them live on this tour when I was 14.
Please do Deep Purple - Highway Star
Maybe it sounds 80s today but it did not when it came out. This is the original line-up of this band and the live show from this record is forever burned in my mind because I've never felt anything like it since. Don't sleep on Deep Purple...this isn't their best but they're right there with the greatest bands in the world.
Not the original line-up. This is the "Mark II" line-up. This is most well known and popular line-up, but not the original.
There's no Madonna or Don Johnson or Simmons drums etc. It really doesn't sound 80's beyond a few production artifacts to me.
If you want more busy stuff, listen to stuff from the Burn album. Especially the title song, Burn. Theres no bad songs on that album but it is a different grouping. Different singer and bass player
Better bass player! Glenn Hughes
its called IMPROVISATION
As you guys noted, Dream Theater covered this song live at least once. What Ryan said he thought was missing in the original version (freestyling, AKA, improvising) is ALL OVER that cover. It can be found on Dream Theater's "A Change of Seasons" EP. I think it's an outstanding cover, YMMV.
Bad Attitude is a really underrated Deep Purple song
Agree. The Unwritten Law, Spanish Archer, and Mitzi Dupree too
Don't sleep on these heavy grooving deep cuts from their 70's catalogue - 'Maybe I'm A Leo', 'Might Just Take Your Life', 'Sail Away', 'Stormbringer' & 'You Can't Do It Right'.
For some more ripping flair, then 'Highway Star' & 'Burn' are the ones you want!
This entire album is a gem!!!
One of the best guitarists on the planet and those amazing keys.
It sounds 80s Ryan because it was 80s 🤣
This was off their reunion album I was a freshman in high school in 1984 when this dropped it was a jaw dropping effort
I too was a freshman in H.S. back then and this album ruled the summer!
I was also a Freshman when this came out and saw them on this tour when they came to Chicago in Feb. ‘85. Awesome show, as I recall
I have an interesting story about this album: It was February 1, 1985, and I was two weeks sixteen when I saw them.
Just a few days prior, I walked into a Liquor Store in Bellflower, California, bought a Coke and Funyuns, walked out of the store, and said, "Oh God, would I LOVE to go to that show!" As I had just heard it announced over the radio the guy had played when I bought my goods.
Two steps later I looked onto the ground and noticed a TicketMaster envelope. So I picked it up and peered inside and, no shit, there were two tickets for that very same Deep Purple concert, at Long Beach Arena. I ain't making this up. That ACTUALLY HAPPENED!
So I went back to where I was staying, at my friend's house, and told him. Then we asked his mom if she would drive us to the arena, as it was a few miles away. She gave us a ride, with the caveat that we "wouldn't get high." We said sure, as we had no money TO "get high."" We only WISHED we could get high by being in the right place at the right time.
Hey, we were teenagers... sue us!
But we also thought, "Hey, maybe the people who lost their tickets came and looked or us!?" Yeah, sure, as kids would think. But that didn't happen.
We got to our seats, just beyond the floor but fifth row on the lodge just left of the stage, and noticed no stoners with weed; as that was first and foremost in our heads, as we had NOTHING TO CONTRIBUTE.
So the first band played. It was some hair band who sucked. But about halfway through, four Japanese businessmen took the four seats to our right. We had three empty seats to our left at that time.
So the four Japanese businessmen settled in and we thought, "Oh, great, no weed here."
And just as we thought that one of them pulled out a bag with some YELLOW buds, and asked, "You smoke?" I looked at my buddy and he looked back at me then him and said, "Fuck YEAH WE SMOKE!" And that's when they pulled out a HUGE JOINT, SPARKKED IT, INHALED IT, THEN PASSED IT TO US!
We performed this ritual a few times.
By then Deep Purple took stage... but just before they did that, some guy was seizing up on the floor below.... he died.
But we lived... to tell the story.
P.S. Yeah, Deep Purple KICKED ASS!
Steve Morse live versions have the fills between the riffage, so he took advantage of the space. Dream Theater cover followed the Steve Morse live versions. Looks like you guys skipped ahead to the second bridge. And yes, it's kind of like a Myan sacrifice.
You guys want a Deep Purple jam then check out Rat Bat Blue from their 1973 album Who Do We Think We Are. It's a banger.
classic .bro..deep purple is unique as a band, like rush,and other,s keep rockin,👉 🤟
Looking for "freestyle"? That's the way I've felt many times about Ritchie Backmore's riffs. But it is actually happening in this song the way you've described, only on the keyboards. In rock and metal music, we're somehow used to always count entirely on the guitar and even when there are parts played on keyboards we usually overlook them as if what they're playing doesn't count. Many rock/metal bands only occasionally add some keyboards in their studio recordings and don't bother to include them when they play live - mostly because their songs are entirely guitar-led and can do without the keyboards. That's not the case with Deep Purple. The keyboards in Deep Purple's music are a full-time lead instrument, always complementing each other with the guitar.
Do "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" by Deep Purple. You'll be blown away by that song. That's 90s Deep Purple with guitarist Steve Morse, in which period the guitar really takes over as a lead instrument.
Underrated deep purple song you should listen to "king of dreams"
Dig deeper into the lyrics of this track. This was a reunion of the Mk II lineup of the band. Arguably the best lineup of Deep Purple after an 11 year breakup. Very 1984 and very Deep Purple!
Y'all skipped a part of the song though 😐
Hahaha😂. “Give me some free styling”. I think Deep Purple is free styling king. Check out Live in Japan.
Or any of their older discography. This tune is their response to music in the 80s. This particular song has this heavy vibe that free styling would have killed. It is a nice tune with a change on time signature to feed the anticipation of flare. Burn, Highway Star, Stormbringer, Demon’s eye, Fireball, Speed King are representative.
The lyrics are about them returning after a 10 year breakup. They let Jon (keyboards) and both Ians take the forefront on this one, while guitarist Ritchie just laid down the groove.
Should do "Lazy" from Deep Purple, y'all would enjoy!
𝕽𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍𝖎𝖊 𝕭𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖒𝖔𝖗𝖊 & 𝓙𝓸𝓷 𝓛𝓸𝓻𝓭 . . . .
A dueling duo that helped Guitar duo's and Guitar/Keyboard harmonizing to influence Metal & Heavier Prog to come. These guys started it (the heavier version of it anyway, Keith Emerson of *ELP* by himself, was just as heavy, and *Uriah Heep* and Ken Hensley) in 1969, starting a new era of Deep Purple to make history.
Was the only time to see DP, was this Reunion Tour . . . . It was a _Blessing_ to hear and see Blackmore & Lord.
- Rest in Peace Jon 😢
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐DIRTY LOOPS - WORK SHIT OUT⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Uh-oh, here comes Shane Douglas...
Live they did all kinds of "freestyle" with this song, both Blackmore and Lord took a ton of advantage of the space those long sustain created. Mark VII with Steve Morse took it even farther when they played it occasionally over the last few decades
Scorpions - Sails of Charon
On this album, the other big hit is Knocking At Your Back Door, however, my favorite song is actually Wasted Sunsets. I absolutely LOVE the keyboards and the powerful guitar solos in this song. It's sheer emotion for me with this one.
For a long time I only knew this song as Shane Douglas entrance music in ECW. Years later I found out it was Deep Purple
I was looking for a comment like this. When I hear the opening of this song I always hear an announcer saying "THE FRANCHISE, SHANE DOUGLAS!" in my head.
You guys should do Golden Earring "Twilight Zone". Came out the same year and is a great song
Gotta listen to diary of a madman, this is just nuts, epic proportions , out of this world
Black night.....catchy riff,cool drumming, great keys,great vocals
Jon Lord was criminally UNDERRATED. R.I.P.
If you're looking for 90's Purple you cant go wrong with Purpendicular. Blackmore purists may decry him but Steve Morse helped Purple go places they would have never walked under Richie's reign. You cant go wrong with any track on the album but I'd suggest Ted the Mechanic or The Aviator. For more modern Blackmore era Purple I HIGHLY recommend Mitzi DuPree for both tasty groove and a great song story.
Blackmore praised Steve and admired him, of course Steve the same. I wonder what G&R would think of "Dixie Dregs", but they'd have to hear about 5 - 7 different tracks to get a taste of them.
Middle age guy rock. I’m from the 80s, and love this song. More so now in my 50s
80’s marathon would be sick !!!
Check out "Hard Lovin Man" by Deep Purple.
I want to see your alls reaction to mistreated, more specifcially though the live version. Its one of the most soulful songs they've released.
Would love to hear you react to some Whitesnake. Check out Still of the Night!
They did.....it's pretty funny
@@danielbeotich1664 Ah, I guess that was a patreon exclusive. Funny how? Did they like it at least?
@@BlueDragonBot not really, it just made them laugh alot,I don't like hair metal but I love that song
@@danielbeotich1664 That sucks. Yeah, that one is one of the greats. Maybe they would appreciate their blues era stuff more.
Most successful comeback album and tour.. BIG COMEBACK!, two shows in the D and other cities
Dig the intro guys 🤙🏻
Weird echo after about 1:40 when it ended though. Too much like I’m in the room but I’m not an audio guy.
'Burn' would be a great Deep Purple listen
It’s funny to me that Ryan thinks this is such an 80s song. This song felt misplaced in the 80s. It was a bridge back to Mach I.
I looove this song. Everyone did when it came out 😁 banger for your consideration. The Union Underground....Turn me on Mr. Deadman. I believe both of you will like it 😁💙 anyone agree?
Can we please hear NEW ALTER BRIDGE!!! Their new album is just incredible.
You guys gotta check out Fable of the Silent Son!
Siempre me hacen el día con sus videos
hi, im just learning spanish, and Im surprised to see that expression is the same as in English - something 'made my day'?
Do dokken😊
I'd suggest you to react to their songs Knocking on your Back Door, Anya & You Keep on Movin. Amazing songs! I feel like you'll love these two!
Debbie coming thru with the sweets once again! Lol. Cant wait to get that RnB Lounge on Patreon! :P
I highly recommend Jorn's metal cover of this song. Best version of this song ever.
One more time baby I AM THE ECHO OF YOUR PAST!!!!! Yes Ian you are!!!!!!!
I think you guys will totally get off on "Endless Dream " by Yes!!! It's got a grunge funk spiritual message and hard psychedelic sound to it. Check it out!!!
Hey! Brothers what's the echo's...... your vocal sounds bad. Just an FYI
This is a Deep Purple CLASSIC
-if you guys get bored with the 80's rock, revive your spirits with 80's Zeppelin "Fool in the rain" OR branch off into the 1or 2 hit wonders of the 80's rock era; MANY great tunes that strayed from the norm 💯👌
Need to do...Knocking at your back door! Off the same album...even better than...that classic
Dio wasn't in Rainbow when Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow covered Perfect Strangers. That was Doogie White
You guys talk tooooooohhh much before getting to the song.
Your intro to any reaction video needs to be cut in half.
Respect the reaction to the song, but man!!!! Get to the point.
The lyrics are about Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion books.
I Know you're Right!! I've heard this before as well!! Kinda reminds me of Zeppelin's "KASHMIR "!! HMMM Could it be that???
Where's the Shane Douglas comments?! "CUT THE FUCKIN' MUSICCCCCCCC"
Let's face it, everything in music has been done already. We gotta just enjoy it...if you like it. There isn't anything that hasn't been done so everything we have heard before.
Dream Theater also did this with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden on vocals.
